Mo Xier quickly withdrew her gaze, lowering her eyes as she struggled to control her heart, refusing to be moved by someone unimportant.
Although she did not respond, Xinrong swiftly turned around and left in a hurry, seemingly pressed for time, running breathlessly with a thin layer of sweat on her forehead.
"Miss, I’m back!" Her voice was filled with excitement, and her eyes sparkled with brightness. "This ointment is really effective; let me apply some for you quickly!"
With gentle fingers, Xinrong touched her cheek, her expression focused as she intently examined the injury, as if it were a precious treasure that deserved her utmost care.
As she applied the ointment again and again, the fiery pain on Mo Xier's face was replaced by a refreshing coolness. After the earlier commotion, it was now deep into the night, and the general's residence seemed to have quieted down.
Inside the room, it was just the two of them; the only sound was their breathing. Staring blankly at Xinrong, Mo Xier found her eyes inexplicably moist.
Noticing the change in her emotions, Xinrong became visibly flustered and somewhat at a loss. She hurriedly comforted her, "Miss, please don’t cry! Don’t worry; there will definitely be no marks left on your face! If you cry now, all the medicine I just applied will be washed away by your tears!"
However, Mo Xier merely shook her head silently, tears continuing to flow without a word.
"Miss, I know it hurts. I've been beaten like that too. But you must understand that this pain is only temporary; it will pass. In this long life, what is there that cannot be overcome?"
Her words were exceptionally reasonable as she gently patted Mo Xier's back to console her.
The woman slightly lowered her gaze but continued to shake her head, saying nothing.
"Miss, at least you have the young master’s affection. Today's events show that he truly cares about you!" Xinrong persisted in comforting her.
When Night Star entered the room, he saw Mo Xier silently shedding tears while the maid desperately tried to console her.
The moment he saw her tears, a sharp pain pierced his heart once more. He didn’t know when it had started, but he could no longer bear to see her cry; just seeing it made his heart ache unbearably. The desire to make the culprit pay dearly grew stronger within him!
Walking up to the woman, Xinrong saw that she was about to greet him, but he stopped her with a gesture, gently stepping back to leave the room for him and Mo Xier.
Mo Xier's cries grew louder, the anger and sadness that had been suppressed for days seemed to burst forth at that moment, her tears flowing like an unstoppable spring.
With a soft sigh, he grasped the woman's chin, looking into her swollen red eyes. The words of reproach were on the tip of his tongue, but he swallowed them back down.
Her pale face was unlike the rosy cheeks of a normal person; it was slightly swollen, and paired with her red-rimmed eyes, her expression was so tragic that it was hard to look at.
"It’s my fault," he said after a long silence, his voice deep. "If you want anything, just tell Xinrong."
"Is that how you dismiss me?" Her tone rose slightly as she continued, "The man in black must have told you my conditions, right? Now that the play is over, are you going to fulfill those conditions I mentioned?"
Seeing him silent, Mo Xier suddenly panicked. It dawned on her that they were in the General's residence. If the man fulfilled his promise, that would be good; but if he didn't, she would have no way out! After all, the initiative was still in his hands!
Before he could speak, she interjected, "Don't think about going back on your word! Do you really think you can just take back what you said?" Her voice rose sharply as she became agitated.
Her red-rimmed eyes widened like those of a cow, and the tears stopped flowing as she fixed her gaze intensely on the man before her.
Night Star's face was filled with astonishment. Seeing such a rich array of emotions on her face made him unable to suppress a thought. He slowly lowered his gaze and softly said, "It wasn't me who promised you back then."
Before he could finish his sentence, the woman suddenly stood up in anger. "So what you're saying is that you're going back on your word? You want to pretend nothing happened just now?"
Night Star looked at her with cold eyes, causing her heart to chill instantly. The feeling of being deceived surged within her, almost erasing all her rationality.
Step after step, she retreated desperately shaking her head, murmuring, "You promised me! How can you go back on your word now?"
Her tone grew increasingly strange. As their wrists touched, a sharp pain shot through her wrist. The loneliness of being trapped still lingered within her; she had thought she could seize this opportunity to escape. Why had things suddenly turned out like this?
Noticing her unusual expression, Night Star instantly abandoned his previous teasing demeanor. He firmly grasped her wrist and spoke seriously, "What I mean is, even though I didn't promise you in words, I am willing to fulfill my promise and will no longer confine you!"
In the next moment, Mo Xier's eyes lit up as if she had suddenly been rescued from drowning. "You... are you really telling the truth?" Her tone was filled with disbelief, clearly doubting his words.
"When have I ever lied to anyone?" the man retorted, then added, "But I need you to promise me one thing."
She knew that nothing in this world came easily; one must give something to gain something. Lowering her gaze, she slowly nodded.
"It's simple. As long as Liu Xuxin leaves, you can leave this place just like her." His words were serious. "And I won't come looking for you again. I'll give you some money so you can go wherever you want."
Such an enticing offer made her agree after only a moment of thought. As long as she could leave, what was there that she couldn't try? However, why was there a voice deep inside her urging her to stay?
Night Star raised his eyebrows slightly, a hint of satisfaction appearing on his face. Nodding slightly, he said in a deep voice, "Since you've agreed, then do it well for me. As long as the goal is achieved, you can leave here immediately."
His repeated emphasis seemed to give Mo Xier confidence, assuring her that he would keep his promise.
However, in an instant, her expression cleared up, and with a hint of a confident smile, she softly replied, "I understand what to do. Our relationship is merely a transaction; I get it without needing your special emphasis!"
Gradually sitting down, her mood began to calm. It seemed everything was slowly falling into place, and the previous chaos was beginning to sink beneath the surface.
As she fell silent and lowered her gaze, her eyes were somewhat obscured by the dim candlelight. Night Star sat across from her, silently observing the changes in her expression.
Upon seeing her calm demeanor, his worries finally eased. When he looked at her with his usually indifferent eyes, a different emotion appeared.
Yet the woman with her head down remained oblivious to him and had not noticed the change in his expression at all.
Suddenly sensing something, she abruptly looked up and met the man's gaze. In that moment, she was touched by the emotions reflected in Night Star's eyes.
However, in an instant, he averted his gaze, quickly masking his emotions.
When his eyes met the woman's again, any trace of his previous feelings had vanished, like bubbles disappearing under sunlight, leaving no trace behind.
"You..." She had not forgotten the man's heartfelt confession after the palace banquet that day.
But those confessions had long since dissipated with the events that followed. She thought they were merely lies he told to deceive her, yet upon seeing that look in his eyes, she suddenly began to doubt her earlier assumptions.
Could it be that this man was serious about her? This thought had just begun to surface when she forcibly suppressed it, pretending she knew nothing.
The feelings she held for him were also forcefully buried deep within her heart. Ever since the memories of this body gradually returned, she started to realize that she should not invest more emotions in this man before her.
It was precisely because of this rationality that she worked hard to keep herself distanced from his world, refusing to allow herself to act out of line.
Once again lowering her eyes to avoid his gaze, she spoke coldly, "Since it's all fine now, please Night General leave. It’s late; you don’t need to rest, but I am human and I need rest."
Such indifferent words left him momentarily stunned.
Receiving no response, his tone grew increasingly irritable. "Does Night General wish to stay here today?"
As he spoke, he stood up with a look of disdain and said, "If the general wants to stay here, then I shall go elsewhere today. Stay as long as you wish."
After saying this, he turned to leave. However, just as he stood up, his wrist was suddenly grabbed by someone behind him.
With a pained gasp, he realized that Night Star was gripping the very spot on her wrist that was injured, sending a sharp pain coursing through her.
"You hurt me!" She quickly turned around and struggled to pull her wrist free from his grasp, her face filled with reproach. "Didn’t you want to stay here? The room is yours!" Her escalating accusations left him no time to retort.
"You stay here, I'm leaving," Night Star said in a low voice. "Get some rest early. We'll have breakfast together tomorrow morning."
After saying that, he left without looking back. Watching the man walk away, she slowly sank into the chair and closed her eyes.
As soon as he stepped out, Xinrong came in. Seeing Night Star's troubled expression as he left, she began to worry.
"Miss, what did the young master say to you? I noticed he didn't look well just now. You two didn't have a fight, did you?"
Mo Xier remained silent for a while before slowly replying, "You should get some rest. It's already late, and you've had a tiring day."
Xinrong wanted to ask more but, upon seeing her expression, quickly suppressed her questions and glanced at her a few times before finally leaving.
This night at the General's residence was destined to be anything but ordinary.
The next day, as the sun in the east began to rise and cast a faint light, Mo Xier's courtyard was already stirring with activity.
The clothes that Night Star had brought were delivered early in the morning. Mo Xier had hardly slept all night; the marks on her face were less noticeable now unless one looked closely, though there were still faint red traces.
Xinrong's subordinates were busy helping her gather her long black hair that had been hanging down her back, praising her, "Miss, your hair is truly beautiful! It must look stunning when styled up!"
Such compliments sounded very familiar; someone had said similar words to her not long ago, yet that person had chosen to betray her.
