"I told you, my matters don't require your input! Can't you understand what I'm saying?"
Liu Xuxin's harsh words revealed a hint of ferocity in her eyes, scaring Cui Er into silence. She could only shake her head repeatedly, tears welling up in her eyes, too afraid to let them fall.
Seeing Cui Er's pitiful state, Liu Xuxin showed no sign of pity and sternly asked, "Do you know what you should do next time?"
Cui Er nodded continuously, speaking softly, "I understand, Miss."
"That's good!" Liu Xuxin shot her a fierce glare before turning to leave for her courtyard.
Only then did Cui Er dare to slowly cover her already swollen cheek with her trembling hand. The tears she had held back for so long finally fell, unable to endure any longer.
Watching Liu Xuxin's retreating figure, she silently lowered her head and followed behind, not daring to utter a single word.
While Liu Xuxin was still angry, Night Star went straight to Mo Xier's courtyard as he still had some matters to discuss.
Upon entering the room, he found Mo Xier enjoying her lunch. Just as she was happily eating, she choked when she saw him enter and began coughing uncontrollably.
Desperately pounding her chest with one hand while pointing at him with the other, her eyes were filled with resentment.
Xinrong, standing nearby, was startled and rushed over to pat her back, anxiously asking, "Miss, are you alright? Don't rush while eating; no one is competing with you!" There was a hint of reproach in her tone.
Night Star, just stepping through the door, found the situation quite baffling. Why did the woman react so strongly as soon as he entered?
Finally managing to ease the choking sensation, Mo Xier took a gentle breath and scolded, "Why are you here again? You didn't even knock when you came in! You scared me!"
The man raised an eyebrow slightly, puzzled, "What? Can't I come?"
"Of course you can! Didn't you say last time? This is your courtyard, so you can go wherever you want. How could I, as a guest, stop you?" The woman's tone clearly carried a hint of disdain.
Night Star didn't mind; he was already used to the woman's cold sarcasm. He remained silent, simply watching quietly.
Regardless of the man's current situation, after she coughed, she picked up her chopsticks again. Night Star had just walked in when she had just started.
Continuing her actions, she showed no sign of discomfort from being watched; instead, she became even happier.
Night Star quietly observed her without speaking, but his gaze revealed a hint of tenderness, as if he wanted to deeply imprint the image of this woman in his mind.
Xinrong was very perceptive. As soon as she saw her young master’s expression, she knew she could no longer disturb them inside the room. She immediately said, "Miss, I just remembered there’s still a dish in the kitchen that hasn’t been served. I’ll go check on it."
With that, she slipped away as if her feet were greased.
In an instant, only the two of them remained in the room. Mo Xier understood Xinrong's intentions and didn’t insist; she simply lowered her head to look at her bowl.
Feeling his intense gaze, the woman felt as if she were being scorched by fire, making her uncomfortable all over.
Finally unable to endure it any longer, she raised her eyes directly to meet his deep gaze and asked in a low voice, "You suddenly came here not just to look at me like this, right?"
The man couldn't help but raise an eyebrow, a hint of a smile curling at the corners of his lips. Unlike the smiles he had given others before, this time his smile seemed to penetrate his originally indifferent eyes as he retorted, "Can’t I simply want to come see you?"
Upon hearing this, Mo Xier quickly waved her hand at him with an expression of disbelief as if she were greatly alarmed. "Please don’t say such things to me; it’s disgusting!
Night Star, can we discuss something? Can we be more honest with each other? In my memory, you previously kept me at arm's length; why has your attitude suddenly changed now?"
"People can change, can't I?"
Night Star's voice was calm, and although it was a serious statement, it felt eerily chilling to her, as if a cold breeze had risen behind her.
Staring blankly into his deep eyes for a long time, Mo Xier suddenly burst into laughter, her hands repeatedly slapping the table, and there seemed to be a glimmer of tears in her eyes.
At that moment, she resembled a madwoman, completely devoid of rationality. The man's brows furrowed tightly, looking at her with a strange expression.
"Night Star! Please stop joking with me!" After seemingly laughing enough, she reached up to wipe away the tears at the corners of her eyes, shaking her head as if she strongly disagreed with his words.
The man's brows knitted tighter as he said in a deep voice, "Is what I said funny?"
"Honestly, you wouldn't believe it, but what you just said is the funniest joke I've heard so far!"
As she spoke, she extended her hand to show him the moisture on her fingertips and continued, "See? I laughed so hard that I cried; you should know just how funny that was!"
He looked at Mo Xier with an ugly expression, remaining silent, but the atmosphere around him grew heavy and gloomy.
Mo Xier seemed unfazed by this; the smile on her lips remained unchanged as she stood up and patted his shoulder, saying with a grin, "Night Star, you've never changed. From the first time I met you and saw your indifference, I knew what kind of person you were. That indifference is enough to ensure that you will never change in your life."
Slowly walking to face him directly in the eyes, she said, "Even now, I don't feel that you've changed at all. Indifference is indifference; how could someone with a heart as cold as ice possibly change?"
Her words were distant, emanating loneliness from within; even the smile on her lips couldn't hide it.
For a moment, the room fell silent. Night Star didn't want to make eye contact with her; he hated the emptiness in her gaze and the disappointment in her tone. He didn't want to listen or see any more!
Mo Xier's words were not only directed at him but were also meant for herself: not being moved means not feeling pain!
Control your heart, and when the day comes that you truly have to leave, you won't feel reluctant! You won't be thrown off balance by this person in front of you!
But how easy is it to control a heart that has already fallen in love? If it were truly that simple, there wouldn't be so many lovesick men and women in this world.
Clearing his throat, Night Star shifted the topic. "I came today to discuss something with you."
"Oh?" She raised an eyebrow slightly, returning to her seat and casting a scrutinizing gaze over him. "Then I want to hear what you have to say. You’re not thinking of letting me go, are you?"
Hearing her constantly mention leaving, Night Star felt a surge of anger. This woman! How much did she want to escape from him? All day long, she only thought about leaving! Did she have nothing else on her mind?
He grabbed her wrist and spun her around; before Mo Xier could react, she had already fallen into his embrace, her eyes filled with fear as she looked up at him.
She struggled repeatedly. "You said you had something to say; what are you trying to do?"
He firmly held her struggling hand, his grip powerful enough to stop all her movements in an instant. "Don't move anymore; otherwise, I can't guarantee I won't pin you down like last time and talk to you!"
As soon as he finished speaking, Mo Xier stopped struggling, like a frightened rabbit, her beautiful eyes staring blankly at him.
The fear from being trapped on the bed last time still lingered in her heart. Hearing him say this now naturally made her dare not move again.
Feeling the woman in his arms so quiet brought great satisfaction to Night Star. The corners of his mouth involuntarily lifted slightly; he didn't even realize he was smiling!
Only Mo Xier stared blankly at him, feeling even more creeped out by his smile! A smile like that definitely meant trouble!
Night Star reached out to lift her chin, forcing her to meet his gaze. He spoke softly, "If you had been obedient and not talked back earlier, we wouldn't be in this situation." After saying that, his hand slowly moved up to cover her injured area, a hint of pity showing in his eyes.
"You know I rushed into the palace yesterday. The emperor ordered me to go suppress the war at the border; I will be leaving soon."
As soon as the man's words fell, Mo Xier's dual-mode device lit up, eagerly asking, "Does that mean I can accompany you this time? Does it mean I don't have to stay here anymore?"
However, she did not receive the answer she hoped for. The moment Night Star shook his head, she froze completely.
What does Night Star mean by this? Is he going to leave her at the General's residence? Grabbing his collar in a panic, she exclaimed, "Don't tell me you're going to leave me here alone! I'm telling you! I disagree! I disagree!"
Her emotions grew more intense, but Night Star's indifferent expression deeply suppressed her. He firmly held her wrist and said in a deep voice, "It doesn't matter if you disagree; this is the Emperor's decision, something I cannot change. Besides, I'm going to war this time. The battlefield is ruthless; how can I take you with me?"
"I don't care! You have to take me with you! You know what the situation at the General's residence is like now. Are you really going to leave me to face Old Madam alone? Don't you fear that when you return, you'll find nothing but a corpse?"
She continued to chatter on, appearing very stubborn!
"It won't happen," Night Star said firmly, looking at her with deep eyes that contained emotions she couldn't comprehend.
The hand gripping his collar tightened further as Mo Xier's expression filled with anxiety. "How do you know it won't? You've seen my face; can you really bear to leave me at the General's residence like this? Think seriously again! Are you sure?"
Night Star's expression remained calm, showing no signs of change. Her words were like a breeze passing by his ears, entering from one side and exiting from the other, having no effect on him at all.
He held her hands and wrapped his arms around her slender waist, speaking in a low voice: "Don't worry; I won't leave you alone at the General's residence. You know the man in black; I'll ensure he protects you from the shadows. As long as you encounter any danger, he will come out to protect you. Your personal safety should not be a problem."
