As night gradually darkened, the autumn nights fell particularly quickly. After walking for a short while, a layer of darkness enveloped the sky, and as it seemed that the night would soon be complete, the pedestrians couldn't help but quicken their pace.
Finally, when the sky was completely dark, a group of people arrived at a remote little town. According to Jiang Wei, this town was under the jurisdiction of Daughter City, which was adjacent to Boiling City.
It was said that Daughter City revered women. Even though some wealthy men had multiple wives and concubines, they all regarded the first wife as the primary one, and it was unheard of for a concubine to take precedence. If that happened, they would be punished by the Pig Cage.
For them, the Pig Cage was the most severe punishment, so everyone followed the rules.
The speaker was unaware, but the listener felt a chill. Mo Xier had only read about a Daughter Kingdom in Journey to the West in history books; she never expected there would actually be a Daughter City in this fictional country.
However, she couldn't understand why men could still take multiple wives if women were revered. Indeed, traditional conservatism prevailed; even in this city that honored women, having multiple wives was considered normal.
When they arrived at the inn, there were no pedestrians on the street. A man named Afu stepped forward and knocked on the inn's door.
After a while, a sleepy attendant emerged, having been roused from his dreams in the middle of the night. He looked displeased as he regarded the five people outside and coldly asked, "Are you here to stay or just for a meal?"
The elder referred to as Old Madam by Jiang Wei stepped forward and pulled out a gold ingot from his pocket, handing it to the attendant with a smile. "Brother, please prepare five Upper Rooms for us and some food."
The attendant, who had been somewhat annoyed just moments before, instantly changed his demeanor upon seeing the heavy gold ingot gleaming in his hand. "Alright, alright! Please come in; I'll arrange food for you right away."
Mo Xier had initially planned to take out silver from her pocket but suddenly felt embarrassed. Having rushed out from Ice and Snow Kingdom, she had forgotten her silver at the inn.
She glanced awkwardly at Jiang Wei and said apologetically, "I forgot my silver. I'll have Xingchen pay you back when we get to Boiling City."
Jiang Wei looked at Mo Xier with annoyance. "Miss, are you implying that I am being presumptuous?"
Mo Xier shrugged and remained silent.
She didn't like owing favors; it was better to keep things clear.
Moreover, the woman beside her had been exuding an unmistakable hostility towards her all along. If she got any closer to Jiang Wei, would she end up being chopped up for dinner?
The seemingly calm night was filled with a chilling atmosphere. Mo Xier had just closed her eyes when a sudden gust of wind caused the trees outside to rustle.
Her eyes snapped open, shining with a glint in the darkness. She focused her mind and quietly listened to the sounds outside the window.
Suddenly, a faint noise came from outside the tightly shut door. A thick smoke began to seep through the crack beneath the door, and Mo Xier's heart sank as she realized something was wrong.
She slowly channeled her internal energy from her Dantian up to her chest, isolating herself from the poisonous gas that was blowing in. Her sharp eyes stared unblinkingly at the door, fully alert.
Due to the darkness, the intruder did not notice the movements of the person on the bed. With light footsteps and slow movements, they approached the bed and raised a gleaming long sword, a bloodthirsty smile curling at their lips.
The long sword lunged toward the person on the bed, but the anticipated scene did not unfold. The woman on the bed suddenly flipped over and narrowly dodged the approaching sword.
The intruder paused slightly, then raised a finger and snapped it in the stillness of the night. Instantly, over a dozen people dressed like him burst through the window.
Mo Xier coldly regarded these individuals, nearly unable to suppress her curse. What grudge or enmity did she have with them? Was it simply that she was too prominent? But where exactly was she prominent?
Rolling her eyes in frustration, she coldly asked, "Who are you?"
"People here to take your life," replied the man in black, taken aback by her ability to easily evade his sword. His tone turned cold as if he felt insulted.
"Hey..." Mo Xier's unfinished words were abruptly cut off as a long sword pressed against her throat.
In a panic, she dodged and quickly channeled her internal energy into her palm. With a sudden thrust of her hand toward the three people closing in on her, she unleashed a powerful gust that pushed them back. Blood surged in her chest, and she coughed up blood violently.
Before Mo Xier could react further, another glinting sword lunged at her. She bent slightly and gritted her teeth to evade it, then kicked one of the black-clad men away.
Leaping through the broken window, she landed in the open courtyard, breathing heavily. Her eyes glinted like frost and snow as she coldly stared at the dozen or so black-clad figures chasing after her, expressionless.
Without giving her a chance to catch her breath, the man in black charged at her fiercely, several long swords thrusting towards her. She lightly lifted her toes and leaped behind one of the men in black, striking him with a fierce palm.
The man in black couldn't withstand the force and stumbled forward. She seized the sword that was thrusting at her side, yanked it away, and kicked it aside.
Suddenly, four shadows appeared beside her. Before she could react, she heard a familiar yet anxious voice, "What’s going on?"
As he spoke, a long sword approached him. He slowly raised his hand, pressing the sword against the Folding Fan, unable to move. Suddenly, a flash of light appeared at the Folding Fan, and the man in black immediately widened his eyes in anger before collapsing to the ground.
Mo Xier looked at Jiang Wei's Folding Fan in surprise, silently apologizing for looking down on him earlier for using the Folding Fan; it turned out to be a concealed weapon.
Kicking aside the man in black in front of her, Mo Xier took advantage of the opening and said, "Who knows what kind of freaks they are? Running around here at night instead of sleeping—why aren’t they sent to the Pig Cage?"
Jiang Wei's forehead slowly drew three dark lines. Even at this moment, she still had the mind to joke; she was truly an oddity.
However… Jiang Wei narrowed his eyes tightly, staring intently at the woman who was fiercely battling against the men in black, a look of astonishment flashing in his eyes.
She possessed such profound martial arts? But why did she have no internal strength when he saved her earlier?
"Hey, do you want to just stand there and watch me get killed by them?" Just as he was lost in thought, a sharp voice filled with dissatisfaction suddenly rang out.
Snapping back to reality, he glanced helplessly at the woman and said in a deep voice to the three people behind him: "Ajin, fall back. Afu, Old Madam, help out."
"Brother, I..." Before she could finish her sentence, Jiang Wei abruptly turned his head and shot her a cold glance with his icy eyes before ignoring her and joining the battle.
Watching the man fight desperately, Ajin stomped his foot in frustration and stood still.
The movements of the three were quick but ruthless; anyone caught by them would either lose an arm or a leg—truly brutal.
And Mo Xier had never experienced such things before. Although she had profound martial arts skills, she couldn't control them freely. In the back-and-forth exchanges, she appeared somewhat strained.
In less than half a stick of incense, the men in black had all fallen to the ground, their bodies sprawled everywhere.
Finally resolving the situation, Mo Xier slowly walked up to Jiang Wei, her expression dark. "Thank you!"
"I saved you, so why do you look so unhappy?" Jiang Wei said, looking at the gloomy figure in confusion.
"Now I owe you another favor. Do you know how hard it is to repay a debt of gratitude?" Mo Xier's expression was pained, as if she were engaged in an internal struggle.
Jiang Wei looked helplessly at the conflicted Mo Xier, her lips twitching. Shouldn't she be worried about who tried to assassinate her? Why was her first thought about repaying a favor?
"Ah!" Mo Xier suddenly exclaimed. Jiang Wei looked at her in puzzlement as she continued, "How could I forget to leave one alive? How will we find out who tried to kill me?"
Jiang Wei couldn't help but facepalm; his handsome features were almost twisted in disbelief. Was this reaction really too slow?
In the early morning, just as dawn broke and sunlight peeked through the clouds without shining brightly, the five of them quietly left the inn.
It would be more accurate to say that they left quietly because it was still dark; Jiang Wei and the others were forcibly awakened by Mo Xier.
In her words, the scene of corpses would surely cause a stir tomorrow, and she didn't want to face any strange looks.
The town was picturesque and the air fresh. Along the way, Mo Xier happily enjoyed the beautiful scenery. Her white hair had long been covered by white sand, transforming her into a stunning beauty that caught the attention of passersby.
What drew even more attention were the two handsome young men following her—one aloof and the other refined and gentle—adding a striking touch to the cityscape.
As the woman leisurely admired the scenery along the road, two familiar figures suddenly appeared in her clear, sparkling eyes.
A man and a woman were walking toward them. The woman had a delicate face with a fair oval complexion and no makeup; her straight brows were tightly arranged above her forehead. Yin Tao had a small mouth and a petite figure.
Dressed in a blue long dress that accentuated her slender form, she swayed gracefully with the breeze as her skirt fluttered in the wind.
The man had dark skin, and his thick eyebrows made his already cold cheeks appear even more frigid. His full lips complemented his tall, sturdy figure, which stood like a cypress tree, becoming even more upright under the sunlight.
The blue robe he wore suited him well, and his sharp eyes were as deep as a muddy pit, unfathomable. As he stared ahead, his gaze suddenly caught sight of the group approaching, and his brows furrowed slightly.
When the two individuals reached him, Mo Xier abruptly lifted her veil, staring in shock at the two people before her. Her gaze shifted to the equally astonished woman beside her. "Xinrong?"
"Miss?" The surprise in the woman's eyes was no less than that of Mo Xier. Soon, her clear pupils glistened with a layer of mist. "Miss, I finally found you! I was so worried about you."
"Miss, Jiang Wei?" The man beside Xinrong looked at Mo Xier with astonishment.
"Qinglong?" Mo Xier regarded him with suspicion before glancing at Xinrong's flushed cheeks. A smile curved at the corners of her mouth. "Xinrong?"
Her gaze was intense as she fixed it on the two before her without speaking. Under her penetrating stare, Xinrong quickly lowered her head, her face turning red as she shyly said, "Miss, why are you looking at us like that?"
A strange smile appeared on Mo Xier's lips as she deeply scrutinized them and slowly spoke, "You two? Why are you together?"
"I... I..." Under Mo Xier's gaze, Xinrong's already rosy face turned even redder, leaving her momentarily speechless.
Qinglong could not bear to watch any longer. His voice was cold and his expression stern. "I learned that the Miss escaped from the palace. Following my master's orders, I came to assist her. My master cannot come due to other matters."
Mo Xier's whereabouts were unpredictable; there had been many times without any clues. It was only when passing through Ice Snow City that he overheard people discussing the White-Haired Enchantress. Thinking it might be her, he initially intended to continue straight but changed his route upon considering she might go to Boiling City to find his master. He never expected to encounter her here.
However, why was she with Jiang Wei? If he remembered correctly, ever since his master secretly investigated Jiang Wei due to the Miss's affairs after their last drinking session, Jiang Wei had been appearing around his master intentionally or unintentionally. Now he was with the Miss again—what could be his intentions?
