Calming his mind, the deep pupils of the Azure Dragon shifted between the two individuals, his gaze lingering. "Why are you together?"
If he remembered correctly, Miss Mo and Jiang Wei had no prior connection and had never even met. Yet, they appeared quite familiar with each other now.
"I ran into Miss Mo by chance. She is heading to Boiling City, so we decided to travel together," Jiang Wei said, his elegant brows slightly arching. His gentle eyes and the smile at the corners of his mouth made his narrow gaze seem even smaller.
His exquisite face bore no flaws, and under the nearly wintry sunlight, his smile felt like a warm spring breeze.
The azure robe draped over his tall figure enhanced his refined demeanor.
The Azure Dragon's expression was cool, and a strange suspicion flickered in his deep eyes. "Are you also going to Boiling City?"
Nodding gently, Jiang Wei replied with a smile, "I have some free time, so I thought I'd accompany Miss Mo and pay a visit to the Night General."
Visiting the general? The Azure Dragon narrowed his eyes, staring intently at Jiang Wei. He regarded him with a meaningful glance before saying, "In that case, let us go together; it will be safer on the road."
Jiang Wei smiled back at him but did not speak. The Azure Dragon was the most loyal Shadow Guard by Night Star's side, having always followed closely behind.
Their journey would take another month, and Chill had already donned a layer of cold attire. The northern weather was inherently frigid, and with Boiling City situated in steep terrain with uneven mountains and forests, several high peaks completely blocked out sunlight.
The harsh terrain and extremely cold weather caused the locals to don winter clothing early. However, since that heavy rain, there had been no wind or snow, making this already chilly place feel even drier.
Mo Xier could withstand the severe cold due to her internal energy protection, while Jiang Wei and his companions were all trained martial artists. As the cold approached, they activated their internal energy, allowing warmth to spread within them.
As for the Azure Dragon, he was accustomed to marching through ice and snow alongside Night Star for many years; this bit of chill felt like nothing more than summer's end to him—no threat at all.
Along the way, Xinrong found it the hardest to endure. She had never traveled far, and her delicate body could not withstand the sudden drop in temperature, falling ill as the weather turned cool.
Due to the need to care for Xinrong, what was originally a ten-day journey took over a month to complete.
After getting lost for four months previously, and now delaying for another month, this long journey of half a year finally came to an end after the first heavy snowfall.
Overnight, a layer of silver white enveloped the world, as large snowflakes fell rapidly from the sky, as if determined to cover everything in white.
As soon as Mo Xier entered Boiling City, she spotted Night Star walking briskly towards her. She didn't care how he happened to know she would arrive today.
What concerned her was why he looked so much thinner. His eyes were misty, and her cold heart melted into a pool of warmth upon seeing him.
With delicate fingers slowly lifting her skirt, she could no longer suppress her longing and dashed towards him. In the blink of an eye, her soft figure leaped into his broad chest.
The warm breath from above fell on her fair face as she spoke with a hint of nostalgia in her voice: "Star..."
Her jade-like hands tightly embraced the man before her, savoring the scent of Mugwort on him. He was not a rough man; even after years on the battlefield, he did not carry an unpleasant odor. Instead, there was a faint fragrance of Mugwort.
The man with a cold expression revealed a doting smile upon seeing the girl rushing towards him. His bright eyes sparkled, and his lips curved into a smile that made his eyes form a straight line.
Before he could react, he felt something soft collide with him. A ripple of emotions surged within him as he reached out to touch her White Hair, which had been blown by the wind due to her swift run. However, his gaze caught sight of several people nearby stifling laughter, causing him to feel embarrassed.
He placed his long fingers near his mouth and pretended to cough lightly. Though helpless, there was still a hint of affection in his tone: "Alright, Mo Xi'er, there are so many people... watching."
She shook her head in dissatisfaction, pouting slightly as she murmured: "No way... If they want to watch, let them watch. I just want to hold you; I've missed you."
Passersby glanced over curiously; some elderly individuals turned away in embarrassment at this shameless display, covering their eyes.
The few people following Night Star, upon witnessing this scene, couldn't help but lower their heads and chuckle softly. At the same time, they let out a deep sigh of relief; it was rare to see a smile on their master's face. They cast admiring glances at the woman nestled in his embrace.
The hand that had been suspended in the air finally descended slowly, gently patting her slender back. Once the woman's thoughts settled, she lifted her longed-for face, her misty eyes blinking at him, looking incredibly adorable.
Her shy demeanor struck a soft spot within him.
His thin lips parted as he affectionately said, "Good girl, let's head back to the residence."
The person buried in Night Star's arms did not speak but nodded lightly, her long hands resting on his waist.
Raising her head, she caught sight of several people behind her and furrowed her brows tightly. With a hint of detachment in her tone, she asked, "Is Jiang Wei here to visit Boiling City?"
His narrow eyes fixed intently on her, as if trying to see through her. He could never believe that they had come for leisure; however, why was he with Mo Xi'er?
Meeting Night Star's probing gaze, Jiang Wei remained unfazed and smiled lightly. "I happened to run into this young lady. She is unfamiliar with the area, and we had nowhere else to go, so we decided to accompany her to visit the general."
With this explanation, Night Star had no reason to say more; after all, guests were guests. He turned to his companions and said in a deep voice, "Zhuque, prepare a vacant room for Jiang Wei and his group so they can stay."
After saying this, he ignored everyone else and wrapped his long fingers around the woman's delicate waist as they left.
The snowstorm was particularly fierce; even though Mo Xi'er had inner strength to protect herself, she could not withstand the cold's invasion.
After just one night, she felt somewhat exhausted. Without having the chance to speak more with Night Star, she was hurriedly attended to by a woman named Zhuque for a wash before falling into a deep sleep.
In the morning, a bright ray of light streamed through the paper window into the cheerful room. The crimson light illuminated the beautiful woman's face on the bed, making her fair complexion appear even paler. Her eyes fluttered slightly as her long eyelashes blinked. She turned over gently but soon furrowed her elegant brows tightly.
Her hands instinctively moved to her back as a wave of pain surged through her heart. Opening her eyes, she rubbed the painful area slightly; it must have been from earlier when she fought and moved too vigorously, straining her nerves.
The deep gaze turned into a soft expression as he saw the man looking at him gently by the edge of the bed. A slight smile appeared at the corner of his mouth as he slowly said, "You’re here?"
As soon as the voice came out, Mo Xier froze in place, her voice hoarse, resembling that of an old person. Her head throbbed painfully, as if it were about to explode. She felt completely drained and had no desire to move.
Sensing the woman's discomfort, he instinctively pulled her into his embrace and softly said, "You've caught a chill. The long journey has worn you out."
Caught a chill? The woman was taken aback. It must have been due to her rushing on the road these past few days, compounded by an unexpected heavy snowfall. She had intended to buy some winter clothes but hurried to see this person she had been longing for.
With her internal energy protecting her, she hadn’t felt the cold and thought she was fine. Little did she know that the headache she experienced a few days ago was just a precursor to catching a chill.
She slowly nestled against the man, her delicate hand wrapping around his waist, feeling the warmth radiating from his body, which made her heart feel sweet: "Xingchen, I miss you."
Endless longing twisted in her throat and finally transformed into these few words. Yet, even just these words were enough to soften the man's cold heart.
Looking at the woman's straightforward words, his eyes glimmered softly as he replied gently, "I miss you too!"
Upon hearing this, the woman raised her head in dissatisfaction, seemingly annoyed. Her big eyes blinked repeatedly as she said fiercely, "Hey, can’t you say a few more words?"
"I’ve been missing you so much that I can’t sleep day or night. And you only give me three words to brush me off! Have you found someone new while I was gone for these six months? How could you forget me like this? I am…"
Heavy breaths sprayed against her cheek as a series of passionate kisses were imprinted upon her.
The familiar breath and heated kisses strangely calmed her racing heart. She lazily called out, "Night Star, I’m still a patient..."
Before she could finish her sentence, the passionate kisses grew more intense as if he wanted to swallow the delicate beauty before him whole. His rough hands roamed over her waist while the kisses became fervent until she could barely breathe before he finally stopped.
His head gently rested on her shoulders: "You are mine."
His voice was hoarse, mixed with a somber tone that seemed to resonate like a haunting melody, reminiscent of the delicate tunes played on an ancient guqin.
She felt his body pressing against her soft form through the thin fabric of her clothing, the heat radiating from him sending shivers down her spine. "Do you know? I almost didn't get to see you."
The warmth he transmitted made her recall that day in the palace when Li Ye had acted towards her. Hatred surged within her, quickly followed by a wave of grievance that she felt compelled to share with Night Star.
Sensing the sudden intensity of her hatred, he lifted his head from her shoulders in surprise, looking at her. "Why is that?"
"Li Ye, I almost..." Tears welled up in her crystal-clear eyes, resembling a stream as they slowly slid down her cheeks. "He almost forced himself on me. If that had really happened, I would have been too ashamed to face you for the rest of my life. I..."
But she could not bring herself to say the rest; all that remained was a deep sense of grievance. She couldn't bear to imagine what the consequences would have been if that incident had truly occurred. Yet she knew that her fate with Night Star might have reached its end.
Her soft form suddenly transformed into a surge of anger, her voice dark and heavy like a pool of stagnant water. "How dare he do such a thing?"
He had known for quite some time that the emperor coveted Mo Xi'er. He was accustomed to seeing the emperor treat Mo Xi'er like prey, relentless until he got what he wanted. When the news arrived from Qinglong, he had wanted to rush to the capital without hesitation.
However, he was stopped by those in black, thinking that no matter how desperately the emperor wanted Mo Xi'er, he would never stoop so low as to insult her honor.
But unexpectedly, knowing full well that Mo Xi'er was already betrothed to him, the emperor still acted recklessly. Did he not regard his younger brother at all?
"He is my brother..." The pain in his voice was evident; this was his blood brother. Why did he disregard his feelings and act in such a way?
