Zhang Li shouted, "There are too many Zombies, we can't fight them all, let's retreat quickly!"
Liu Ziming and the others maintained their fire while Zhang Li led Li Nan and a few others to retreat, intending to rush into the corridor outside Mortuary One. At that moment, Li Nan called out, "Captain Zhang, what are you planning to do?"
If the Zombies behind them caught up, they definitely couldn't run into the corridor, as that would draw the Zombies over. Once in the corridor, those Walking Dead could very likely rush down to the ground floor.
Ignoring Li Nan's question, Zhang Li turned to Liu Ziming and shouted, "How many grenades do you have?"
Before Zhang Li's voice even reached him, Liu Ziming had already pulled out two fist-sized iron lumps from his pocket. After confirming his safe distance, he swung his arm and threw the two iron lumps towards the leading Zombie.
The Zombie moved its hands back, seemingly inspecting the fist-sized lump to see if it was something edible. Just then, with a loud bang, the iron lump in the Zombie's hands exploded. Aside from a foot left on the ground, that Zombie had vanished without a trace.
One explosion was followed by another. Immediately, half of the wall at Gate 6 was knocked down, and many Zombies were either crushed by the falling Concrete Blocks or blown to pieces.
Hearing the two explosions, Zhang Li cursed under his breath, "Save some for later; we can't afford to waste our weapons right now!"
At that moment, Liu Ziming caught up and shouted, "The Zombies have been suppressed; they aren't rushing out for now!"
Upon hearing this, Zhang Li asked, "What are the losses among the Zombies?"
Liu Ziming replied, "About fifty or sixty Zombies were shot in the head. The two grenades I threw earlier were light grenades; their explosive power wasn't great. In a swarm of Zombies, they probably only caused fatal injuries to a few dozen."
Zhang Li looked back and indeed saw no Zombies pursuing them. He then told Li Nan, "You and Han Guang should retreat to the corridor outside Mortuary One; we'll handle things here!"
Li Nan was taken aback. "Captain Zhang, what are you planning to do?"
Zhang Li smiled and said, "We'll hit them with a counterattack!"
Hearing this, Liu Ziming raised his Submachine Gun and said to everyone, "Let's fight back!"
Zhang Li's thoughts were quite wild. Just a moment ago, he was panicking and preparing to retreat, but now he had come back with a counterattack that left Li Nan puzzled. However, Han Guang remarked, "This is the perfect time to eliminate all the Zombies behind Gate 6. The dozens of Zombie corpses have nearly blocked the gate, so as long as two people guard the entrance, we can carry out a decapitation operation!"
Han Guang then shouted, "Use this; it should be more effective than your Triangular Bayonet!"
Liu Ziming chuckled and quickly grabbed the Fire Axe that Han Guang handed over, rushing back to Gate 6.
Although part of the wall at the entrance had collapsed due to an explosion, the fallen concrete and bricks had blocked the opening again. Now, Gate 6 only had a twenty-centimeter square hole left, filled with the bodies of Zombies, all in a state of disarray.
Inside the gate, some Zombies were still peeking out, eager to taste the outside world. However, as soon as one of their heads emerged, it was met with a downward swing of a red Fire Axe, severing it instantly. Following that, several pairs of military boots stomped down, turning the head into a puddle of mush—quite disgusting!
After chopping down seven or eight Zombies, no more heads poked out from behind the door. At this moment, Zhang Li sighed in relief, "Finally got rid of these guys!"
Liu Ziming also dropped the Fire Axe and wiped his forehead with his hand, saying with lingering fear, "These things are just too damn weak; it just took a bit of effort!"
At that moment, Li Nan and Han Guang stood outside Mortuary One under bright lights. Han Guang pulled out a cigarette pack from his pocket, took one out, and offered it to Li Nan. "Want one?"
Li Nan waved his hand and replied, "I don't smoke!"
Han Guang then put the cigarette in his own mouth, lit it up, and exhaled a cloud of smoke. "Is it true that all doctors don’t smoke?"
Li Nan didn’t understand Han Guang's implication and simply responded, "The profession of being a doctor doesn’t seem to have anything to do with smoking! Although most doctors know about the harms of smoking, not everyone can resist it!"
Han Guang laughed and said, "I was just asking casually; you’re too uptight. The group of Zombies has probably been mostly eliminated by now; there shouldn't be any issues for a while!"
Li Nan was speechless. Was he scared? He lowered his head and looked at his legs—they were shaking uncontrollably.
Han Guang took a puff of his cigarette and said, "If you get home and find a gas leak, your first reaction should be to smoke a cigarette to calm yourself down!"
Li Nan chuckled lightly, "This joke isn't funny at all!"
"The joke itself doesn't matter, but there is one thing in it that is true: smoking can indeed help people calm down!"
Li Nan said skeptically, "Really?"
Han Guang nodded.
Basically, people studying medicine tend to have decent mental qualities; after all, not everyone can handle dissection or surgery. However, Li Nan, as an Intern Doctor, was still quite inexperienced in front of the police and soldiers. So when he saw the terrifying faces of the Zombies and the countless bodies lying on the ground, his nerves were already tightly wound.
Li Nan took a cigarette from Han Guang's hand and put it in his mouth, while Han Guang pulled out a lighter from his pocket and held it to Li Nan's lips.
With a click, Han Guang ignited the lighter, and a flame shot out, touching the tobacco in Li Nan's mouth. The fine tobacco instantly caught fire.
Li Nan took a deep drag, and his throat tightened. "Cough... cough..."
Han Guang laughed and said, "I don't know if smoking is good for the body, but it's definitely not bad for the spirit!"
Li Nan grinned widely, feeling a sense of relief as he looked at his legs, which seemed to be shaking less.
"It seems I haven't lived enough; such a good thing has been kept away from me for years!" Li Nan felt the smoke swirling in his mouth and chest, a spicy sensation coursing through his body that made him shiver involuntarily.
Han Guang and Li Nan leaned against the wall like old smoking buddies, continuously puffing out clouds of smoke, while Li Nan appeared quite inexperienced!
The smoke from their cigarettes rose up to a spot on the ceiling resembling a Ventilation Duct. Suddenly, water began pouring down from the numerous holes scattered across the ceiling.
That was not a Ventilation Duct at all; it was the outlet of a smoke detector.
"Wow!" Li Nan, drenched by the water, couldn't help but laugh, "I forgot that smoking isn't allowed here; there's a smoke detector!"
As soon as the water fell, the cigarettes in Li Nan and Han Guang's hands were extinguished, and the smoke detector only stopped working thirty seconds later.
Han Guang smiled wryly and said, "The weather isn't cooperating, so you're right; we shouldn't be smoking!"
At that moment, Li Nan looked up at the ceiling, where water droplets occasionally fell.
Above the ceiling, there were rows of smoke detectors, and next to each detector was a ventilation duct the size of a watermelon, covered with tightly woven metal sheeting.
When Li Nan looked at the ceiling, he felt something unusual, as if he were being watched. Could there be eyes hidden in that ventilation duct?
Li Nan was quite familiar with the structure of this underground morgue. He knew that the ventilation ducts above were connected by thick pipes, making it possible to hide a person inside. However, he subjectively thought it was just his imagination because if it were a zombie, it wouldn't be able to get into the ventilation duct at all!
Li Nan didn't continue to ponder this, and Han Guang didn't notice anything unusual either.
Before long, Liu Ziming came out from Door 6 and said to Li Nan and Han Guang, "Everything has been taken care of!"
Seeing the water marks all over the corridor, Liu Ziming didn't ask any questions; clearly, he was no longer concerned about anything other than zombies.
Just as Li Nan turned to head toward Door 6, a drop of black liquid suddenly fell from the ceiling in the area where he had just been standing, seemingly dripping with anticipation.
With a "thud," it landed squarely in the water marks below. Li Nan and the other two didn't pay it any mind and assumed it was just the sound of water.
In front of Door 6, chaos ensued as limbs flailed everywhere. When Zhang Li saw Li Nan, he simply said, "Our mission won't end this easily!"
Li Nan replied calmly, "Doors 3 and 6 have already been explored. Now we still have Doors 1, 2, 5, and 6 left to check one by one."
At this moment, Liu Ziming suddenly seemed to have an epiphany. "Didn't you say that Zombies can sense the presence of living people? Since there are no Zombies coming out from the other four doors, logically, that means there are no Zombies inside, right?"
Li Nan had thought of this question as well, but he had another doubt. Initially, the three corpses were placed behind Door 3. If they turned into Zombies, they should have moved towards Door 4 instead of ending up in Door 6. Even disregarding this, how could those three Zombies not feed on the corpses behind Door 3 and instead wander over to Door 6? Such a roundabout approach was something even the most basic animals wouldn't do!
Based on Li Nan's reasoning, Zhang Li also felt that the situation was concerning. When they checked Door 3 earlier, they only examined cabinets 168, 169, and 170, without considering the others. Now, it was necessary to take another look!
Immediately, Zhang Li and the others returned to Door 3.
As soon as Li Nan entered the Morgue, the temperature of minus ten degrees met his damp clothes, causing him to sneeze uncontrollably!
"Achoo..."
Liu Ziming walked ahead, holding his Submachine Gun, and turned around to look around. He realized it was just a sneeze that sounded alarming but was actually just a sneeze.
Everyone burst into laughter. "Why do you look like a startled bird?"
Only Zhang Li did not laugh; given the current situation, caution and care were absolutely necessary.
