Zhang Li and the others jumped down from the ventilation shaft in Area 1. The light was bright, and the refrigeration system in the Morgue had been activated, keeping the temperature at a steady minus ten degrees.
Zhang Li was the first to jump down, holding a Triangular Bayonet, and he checked the surroundings thoroughly. After confirming there were no Zombies, he gestured for the others to jump down as well.
In Area 2, there had been a lingering Zombie, so Zhang Li remained cautious. Fortunately, Area 1 was very safe, and no Zombies were found.
Li Nan was the last to jump down. As soon as he landed, he sneezed loudly. Walking around underground was quite a hardship; transitioning from thirty degrees above to ten degrees below felt like experiencing two extremes. Li Nan was not adapting well and was starting to feel a bit under the weather.
Li Nan had tied his coat around his waist, leaving him with only a thin shirt on top, which clearly could not withstand the cold of minus ten degrees.
As they moved forward, they faced constant dangers, and everyone was exhausted. Once they arrived in Area 1, they immediately sat down on the ground to catch their breath.
Li Nan leaned against a Corpse Storage Cabinet, trying to suppress the growling in his stomach but found it futile. He could only distract himself by thinking about unrelated matters.
Han Guang sat next to Li Nan, resting his hands on his legs. As he looked around, he suddenly caught sight of Li Nan's awkwardness and couldn't help but laugh.
Li Nan disdainfully said, "What are you laughing at? My brain is just working too hard, causing my body's protein energy to break down too quickly, which is why my stomach is making noise!"
Han Guang didn't respond; he simply turned his head away and looked elsewhere, his smile fading instantly.
"What a strange person!" Li Nan muttered quietly. In the ventilation duct, Han Guang had said something odd without context. Based on what he had seen along the way, Li Nan found Han Guang quite peculiar. Although he didn't know what type of firearms Chinese police used, it certainly wasn't an American M1911. Moreover, Han Guang's physical abilities were impressive, seemingly on par with Captain Zhang Li of Wolf Fang. Similarly, while Li Nan didn't know what kind of organization Wolf Fang was, it surely wasn't weak; thus, by extension, Han Guang didn't seem like a typical police officer either.
At this point, Li Nan felt a chill run down his spine—not from the Morgue's minus ten degrees but from a sense of doubt that emerged after seeing some light at the end of the tunnel.
Li Nan adjusted his shirt and deliberately moved closer to Han Guang. "Officer Han," he said, "now that we are about to go out soon and return to the surface, I believe none of us will be free. Even if we speak out clearly about certain matters, the military and government won't easily believe us. At that time, the predicament at Jiangbei Hospital won't be resolved. However, I can say with a clear conscience that at least we've done something truly commendable!"
Han Guang glanced at Li Nan and said, "I don't know about the higher-ups, but are you sure you can get out right now?"
Li Nan asked in confusion, "We've come this far; is there really going to be a problem?"
Han Guang turned his gaze away. "Logically speaking, the news of Captain Zhang leading the Wolf Fang Team down to the Underground Morgue should have been grasped by the higher-ups long ago. If that's the case, why haven't they taken any countermeasures? They should either be trying to rescue us or destroy this underground facility. They should have reacted in some way, but what about now? We're basically left to fend for ourselves!"
Han Guang's words reminded Li Nan that they had been in the Underground Morgue for over three hours. If the higher-ups had anticipated the dangers here, they should have acted decisively to eliminate the Underground Morgue. Could it be that they still held hope for this group of people?
It was clearly impossible. The Zombie that had attacked at Beiyuan Square was now in military hands; they couldn't possibly be unaware of the severity of the situation. When it comes to national security and social stability, no ruling authority would show mercy. Therefore, the only explanation was that perhaps there was also a crisis unfolding on the surface.
As Li Nan pondered this, he felt a sudden chill in his heart, but he was unwilling to accept such a reality. Essentially, aside from the individual taken by the military at Beiyuan Square, all other infected individuals had been sent to Jiangbei Hospital. Logically speaking, there shouldn't be any more Zombies.
Li Nan's mind raced as he tried to deny the possibility of a Zombie outbreak in this apocalyptic scenario, but he found himself feeling increasingly powerless.
Originally, Li Nan had doubts about Han Guang's identity, but now the focus of the issue was clearly not that.
Seeing Li Nan's pale face and purple lips, Han Guang assumed he was frightened by his words. He relaxed his expression and said, "Maybe those in charge are still observing. The situation outside surely can't be worse than what we have here in the Underground Morgue!"
Li Nan's complexion remained poor, and his body trembled uncontrollably. Han Guang noticed something was off and immediately checked Li Nan's temperature. "Not good; you have a bit of a fever!"
Han Guang's hands were calloused, especially around his right thumb area, but Li Nan didn't notice these details. He only felt dizzy and cold all over, as if he were in an ice cellar.
The environment of the Underground Morgue wasn't much better than an ice cellar; it was a place for storing food and corpses.
Li Nan leaned against the Corpse Storage Cabinet, hunched over like a small shrimp. Suddenly feeling heavy-headed and light-footed, he collapsed into the Corpse Storage Cabinet.
Li Nan felt as if he had been trapped inside a coffin, surrounded by rigid walls and confined in a small space. In a moment of daze, he seemed to ponder a question: if the corpses that had been devoured by the Zombie were sent to this Morgue, they must have undergone their transformation in the Corpse Storage Cabinet. The Corpse Storage Cabinet was equipped with mechanisms that required force to pull out from the recessed area outside. How did the first Zombie manage to come out without breaking the Corpse Storage Cabinet?
In Area 3, all the Corpse Storage Cabinets were intact, showing no signs of damage. This raised a significant question: could it have been caused by the missing third corpse?
Li Nan felt his body twitch slightly, and as that thought crossed his mind, he silently exclaimed, "There are indeed variables; there might still be hidden Zombies lurking in this basement!"
However, Li Nan could not voice this thought, as he had already slipped into a shallow coma.
Common ailments like colds and fevers may not attract much attention, but sometimes even minor illnesses can be fatal. Li Nan had been exhausted and drained; his frail body could not withstand the temperature fluctuations and succumbed to a fever, leading him to faint.
Seeing the situation was dire, Han Guang quickly pulled Li Nan out of the fallen Corpse Storage Cabinet and shouted to those behind him, "Li Nan's condition is not good; he might not make it!"
Upon hearing Han Guang's call, everyone in Area 1 rushed over. Zhang Li was incredulous, "He was just lively a moment ago; how could he be in such bad shape so quickly?"
Those who saw Li Nan in this state believed he was on the verge of death. Zhang Li made a quick decision and hurriedly turned to leave; perhaps returning to the surface would save him!
Under Zhang Li's direction, Liu Ziming carried Li Nan on his back, and everyone immediately exited through Door 1.
The entire Mortuary One was divided into six areas, with similar layouts throughout. Zhang Li and the others navigated through several rows of Corpse Storage Cabinets with ease and headed straight for Door 1.
Liu Ziming was quite strong; carrying Li Nan, who weighed around 130 pounds, was no trouble for him as he jogged along behind the others.
After exiting Door 1, they rushed toward the Morgue's main entrance, then turned right into the corridor, heading directly towards the Freight Elevator.
The reason Zhang Li and the others were running was primarily due to their concern about wasting time for Li Nan. As military personnel, they had no problem dealing with external injuries or fractures, but they were at a loss when it came to handling someone like Li Nan who had suddenly fainted. Thus, Zhang Li was quite anxious.
Zhang Li walked ahead, quickly reaching the Freight Elevator and pressing the buttons several times, but the elevator showed no response.
Zhang Li was quite surprised and pressed the elevator button again, still receiving no reaction. However, this time Zhang Li noticed something unusual; the Freight Elevator displayed that it was on Negative Two Floor.
"What’s going on? The Freight Elevator shouldn’t be stopped at Negative One Floor? How could it be at Negative Two Floor?" Zhang Li was filled with suspicion, but the elevator indeed wouldn’t budge, no matter whether Zhang Li pressed it with a finger or pounded it with a fist.
At that moment, Han Guang, who was behind Zhang Li, also sensed that something was off and immediately said to Zhang Li, "The elevator is currently stuck at Negative Two Floor and won’t be moving for a while. Why don’t we discuss a strategy first?"
Zhang Li and the Wolf Fang Soldiers were skilled in tactics and strategies for combat, but they found themselves at a loss in this situation. It was then that everyone remembered Li Nan; whenever there was an issue in this underground area, it was always this kid who came up with solutions.
Han Guang had no choice but to ask the only engineer in the team, Li Xiaofan, "Can you check the elevator for faults now?"
Li Xiaofan shook his head. "For something like this, we need to get inside to observe it. And elevators are special machinery; I’m not very familiar with them either!"
Zhang Li clicked his tongue and said, "Since we can’t fix the fault, we’ll just have to forcefully break it open!"
As he spoke, Zhang Li had already drawn out his Triangular Bayonet from behind and inserted it into the gap of the elevator door. Then he positioned himself sideways, forming an inverted triangle with both hands as he exerted force to pry open the outer door of the elevator.
