Entering the Freight Elevator, Han Guang immediately asked, "Does this elevator stop at Underground Level Two?"
Zhang Li replied, "This elevator stops at ground level!"
Han Guang was taken aback, "It seems Liu Heping has already escaped!"
The others, including Li Xiaofan, gritted their teeth and said, "Having caused us so much trouble, we must skin him alive the next time we see him!"
Li Nan, however, did not pay attention to the discussion. He was lost in thought, pondering what had happened in the storage room. What exactly had Liu Heping done to him? If he couldn't capture Liu Heping, it seemed Li Nan would be stuck in chaos for a good part of his life!
With a ding, the Freight Elevator doors closed, and Zhang Li and the others waited in the ascending elevator for the call of the surface world.
To be honest, the journey down to the Underground Morgue had been incredibly perilous, compounded by the loss of seven brothers. As a result, Zhang Li and the others were not particularly excited. Li Nan wore a worried expression; he was no longer concerned about himself. Compared to the cold and dark underground world, he felt anxious about returning to the surface area. He wondered if Liu Heping's words were true. If they were, then there would be little difference between the surface and underground!
Among everyone, only Han Guang appeared relaxed. He stared at the indicator lights in the elevator and smiled, saying, "Underground Level Two, one level below ground; we're finally getting out!"
In contrast to a night filled with danger, the one or two minutes of elevator travel felt too brief for Li Nan to adjust his mindset for facing the world above. Just as he was still processing everything, the elevator rang.
The doors suddenly opened to reveal a burst of light!
At that moment, everyone held their breath, cautious as if facing a great enemy.
Outside the elevator, there was nothing—no humans, no Zombies—only slightly lonely lights and slowly flowing air.
Li Nan stood at the back of the elevator. Although he sensed that the outside world felt somewhat chilly, it might not necessarily be plagued by Zombies. Or perhaps Liu Heping's words were entirely false; how could there possibly be Zombies in Jiangbei Hospital?
Zhang Li and the others became alert and formed a V-shaped formation as they slowly exited the Freight Elevator, with Li Nan and Han Guang nestled at the back.
The entrance of the underground elevator was located behind the lobby on the first floor of Jiangbei Hospital. To avoid patients, this elevator door was set in a relatively secluded spot.
"There’s no danger!" Zhang Li said as he cautiously turned around a corner.
Han Guang looked at his watch and said, "It's currently 5:40 AM. The military outside is definitely still on lockdown. If everything in the hospital is normal, then those trapped here—doctors and patients—should be sound asleep, so it's perfectly normal that there’s no one in the lobby. Moreover, Zhang Li instructed his Deputy Battalion Commander to relocate everyone to the second floor or above, so there shouldn't be any issues!"
After hearing Han Guang's explanation, Li Nan felt somewhat reassured; perhaps what Liu Heping said was indeed a lie!
There were only six Wolf Fang Soldiers left, one of whom was a patient, which meant there were effectively five combatants remaining: Zhang Li and four others.
As for Li Nan and Han Guang, Zhang Li didn't consider them much; fighting against Zombies relied on those who were war machines employed by the state.
Although Han Guang made a valid point, Zhang Li and the others dared not let their guard down. After encountering so much underground, who would still dare to be careless?
As they crept into the first-floor lobby, there was still no one around—not even a single Zombie.
Zhang Li looked around and saw no signs of blood or anything unusual. Finally feeling relieved, he said to everyone, "It's fine. It seems there are no Zombies in Jiangbei Hospital. We can take a break for now!"
Even if there were no Zombies in Jiangbei Hospital, the situation for Zhang Li and the others was still precarious. After all, he had disobeyed military orders and led his troops into the hospital's Morgue. In wartime, such actions could easily lead to execution!
The Tension Plate sat on the ground, waiting for time to pass. It was still before 6 AM, and in northeastern autumn, it was still dark at this hour!
Without daylight, they couldn't observe the situation outside the hospital. Now, as a Company Commander who had defied military orders, Zhang Li dared not make any more reckless moves.
The first-floor lobby of Jiangbei Hospital was designed as a public space; the main entrance was sizable but had been sealed off by the military outside. If they didn't want anyone to leave, then absolutely no one would get out.
Given the current situation, it seemed unlikely that Zhang Li and his group would easily escape. The military's order was to control Jiangbei Hospital, ensuring that no one could leave. Now that they were essentially indistinguishable from the doctors and patients inside, their identities as soldiers paled in comparison to the larger situation.
The military must have already recognized the threat posed by Zombies, so any potential factors that could lead to a Zombie outbreak would not be allowed to remain. The most likely course of action from the military and government would be to destroy Jiangbei Hospital, along with everyone inside!
Regarding high-level decisions, Zhang Li never dared to question them. From the moment he saw a Zombie in the Underground Morgue, he had already put life and death out of his mind.
Just escaping from one danger only to enter another—that was how Li Nan felt at this moment. In military politics, there are always countless sacrifices. However, now Li Nan had come to terms with it; if their deaths could prevent a Zombie outbreak, such sacrifices were acceptable.
Who wants to die? Who would willingly sacrifice themselves? For Li Nan and the others, it was helplessness; they had been thrust into this position where even wanting to be turtles hiding their heads wouldn't work!
The sky had not yet brightened, so Zhang Li was unaware of the situation outside and the attitude of those above. He was waiting, waiting for an acceptable outcome to death.
Li Xiaofan said to Zhang Li, "Boss, following you is not a loss. We’ve fought so many Zombies in the Underground Morgue; it’s been quite an experience!"
Haizi also laughed, "As Wolf Fang Soldiers, we always have our lives hanging by a thread. Life and death are fated; being here quietly is not bad at all!"
Zhang Li sighed, "It’s my fault for involving you all. If the military can confirm that there are no more hidden dangers in the hospital, perhaps we still have a chance to get out. But if they cannot confirm it or if it’s uncertain, then even if we die like cannon fodder, we must have the iron will of a middleman. We are willing to sacrifice!"
Looking at the remaining brothers beside him, Zhang Li felt a pang of guilt. However, what could be done now that things had come to this?
Escaping would also mean death. It would have been better to stay hidden in the Underground Morgue from the beginning, avoiding this mix of hope and despair! Li Nan was also indignant, but in this moment of waiting, he truly lacked patience. If there was indeed nothing wrong in the hospital, then Gao Xue must still be upstairs. Li Nan wanted to find her and at least clarify that misunderstanding.
At this moment, Li Nan was most concerned about two people: Gao Xue and Liu Heping. He had to find these two—one to explain things to and the other to question!
With this thought in mind, Li Nan hurriedly went upstairs. He was very familiar with the layout of the hospital. Although the doctors and patients had been moved up to the second floor and above, there were only three floors—fourth, fifth, and sixth—that actually had beds available for resting. It seemed that there were relatively few patients recently, so there should be enough space to accommodate these hundreds of people.
Li Nan rushed up to the fourth floor and began searching each ward, eager to see Gao Xue as soon as possible.
Upon exiting the stairwell, Li Nan turned into the first ward, room 401. The door was slightly ajar; without hesitation, he pushed it open and found no one inside.
He barged into over ten wards in succession but saw no one at all, which surprised Li Nan somewhat. Logically speaking, the specifications of the hospital wards were quite particular; as one ascended floors, the conditions improved accordingly. Could it be that all those trapped had gone up to the tenth floor's VIP Ward?
That seemed unlikely. Li Nan reasoned that while the conditions on the tenth floor were excellent, there were relatively few rooms available; accommodating more than a dozen people would already be pushing it. They must be on the fifth or sixth floors!
After leaving room 431, he noticed that only room 432 remained in the entire corridor. Without a moment's hesitation, he slipped inside.
Before room 432's door, Li Nan tried turning the doorknob with force but found that it had been locked from within.
"What’s going on? All the other wards' doors weren’t locked; why is this one…?" Li Nan couldn't help but feel suspicious. Peering through the crack in the door, it seemed that room 432 was dark inside.
There were many strange occurrences in this hospital; for example, certain wards often had patients committing suicide or places where people had died frequently experienced bizarre happenings afterward. Typically in such cases, hospitals had to consider public opinion carefully; thus, many areas remained sealed off and unused as a matter of course.
Li Nan's first reaction was that Room 432 must have been abandoned. Although he didn't know the reason, there was no need to dig deeper into it.
Furrowing his brows, Li Nan wanted to climb to the fifth floor, but just as he left the doorway of Room 432, he heard a faint squeaking sound coming from inside.
Shaking his head, Li Nan returned to the door of Room 432 and softly asked, "Is anyone in there?"
When there was no response, Li Nan knocked on the door again and asked, "Is anyone in there?"
Still no one answered, which made Li Nan suspicious. "Could it be that I misheard earlier?"
Just as Li Nan was about to leave, he noticed that the doorknob of Room 432 was clean and showed no signs of abandonment. Moreover, he recalled that there didn't seem to be anything strange about the hospital's patient rooms! This sparked Li Nan's curiosity. "Behind this door could be either a person or a ghost. Someone like me who has seen zombies in this world wouldn't be afraid of either!"
With this thought, Li Nan grew bolder and approached the door of Room 432 again. He raised his foot and kicked it, creating a hole in the wooden door.
Seeing that there was an opening, he kicked it two or three more times until the door was basically falling apart.
Room 432 was pitch black inside, but Li Nan was undeterred. He immediately stepped in and began feeling around for the light switch in the corner.
