The Pharmacy Department is where Li Nan has recently been interning, making him quite familiar with the place. Besides looking for Liu Ziming's medication, Li Nan has another purpose: to see if Gao Xue is here.
If Gao Xue is still alive, the most likely place for her to hide would be in the Pharmacy Department. For both personal and professional reasons, Li Nan feels compelled to check this area.
The Pharmacy Department is not large, with only four people working there. In addition to Li Nan's supervisor, Team Leader Wang, there is a pharmacist, and the last two remaining are himself and Gao Xue.
Tonight, the people on duty are only Team Leader Wang, Li Nan, and Gao Xue. Li Nan has already faced numerous dangers; he wonders how the others are faring.
As he steps into the Pharmacy Department, Li Nan's heart tightens. Perhaps Gao Xue is hiding inside. Although he feels frightened, it’s not a major issue; the man who loves her most will be right there. If such a surprise occurs, even the biggest misunderstanding could be resolved!
Li Nan's mind is in turmoil. On one hand, he hopes to find Gao Xue; on the other hand, he worries that when he sees her, she might have turned into a Zombie!
After a strong self-hypnosis, Li Nan manages to stop his wild thoughts. The issues he faces are not just about Gao Xue's life or death but also the safety of others. Moreover, he himself is close to becoming a Zombie. Even if he manages to protect Gao Xue, what difference does it make if she has already turned into one? Worrying too much can lead to madness.
Li Nan places Liu Ziming in a spacious area and thoroughly checks the situation outside the door. After confirming that there are no Zombies left on the seventh floor, he feels slightly relieved and turns to Mo Xiaohui, saying, "You have a bag; empty out anything useless inside. We need to take some necessary medications!"
Mo Xiaohui has also been through a lot of danger. Although her shoes have long been lost, she still tightly clutches her bag without knowing what useful items might be hidden inside.
A woman's bag is essentially a portable makeup station. Mo Xiaohui doesn't hesitate; she immediately opens her bag and turns it upside down, causing a pile of items to spill out!
Li Nan watches from the side but can't make sense of it all. Meanwhile, Mo Xiaohui starts listing off items: "Foundation, mascara, eyebrow pencil, lip oil, moisturizer, wallet, and a phone..."
"Wait!" Li Nan interrupts Mo Xiaohui's recitation. "Can we use the phone?"
Mo Xiaohui shakes her head. "I've thought about that already; there's no signal on this thing—it can't make any calls!"
Li Nan reflects absently: "Right, when we went underground, all communication devices were confiscated. This must have been a military decision; since they want to impose martial law at Jiangbei Hospital, they wouldn't allow information from inside the hospital to leak out. So blocking signals makes sense!"
If they could establish contact with the outside world now, that would be ideal. Only by relaying their situation could the military come up with better solutions rather than just sending one or two bombs that would obliterate everything!
"Throw away all those cosmetics, just keep your phone and wallet; they might still be useful!"
In this predicament, Mo Xiaohui did not hesitate to discard these items that could help a woman stay beautiful, tossing them all aside and leaving only her phone and wallet.
Li Nan also stood up and said, "There are some anti-inflammatory medications in the lower left corner; pack as many as you can into your bag!"
The two of them got to work. Mo Xiaohui followed Li Nan's instructions and walked over, but she found that the labels on the medicine boxes were all in scientific terms, such as Mefenamic Acid and Acetaminophen. Feeling dizzy, Mo Xiaohui called out, "Are these all anti-inflammatory medications?"
Li Nan replied, "The bottom layer is all anti-inflammatory drugs; take as many as you can!"
While Mo Xiaohui was busy on one side, Li Nan was not at ease either. He was searching for some medical instruments on the other side because he needed to perform a second surgery on Liu Ziming.
Liu Ziming's first surgery was performed by Liu Heping himself. Although this guy was somewhat reckless, his surgical skills were commendable. However, due to poor testing conditions at the time, some areas were not handled meticulously enough. These overlooked details could potentially cost Liu Ziming his life, especially since he was already showing signs of skin infection that needed immediate attention!
Li Nan found a bottle of medical alcohol, a set of IV tubes, a box of injectable Fentanyl (which has anesthetic properties), and several bottles of Glucose!
"Do you have Mefenamic Acid?" Li Nan asked Mo Xiaohui.
Mo Xiaohui hesitated for a moment before rummaging through her bag and pulling out a few small glass bottles labeled "Mefenamic Acid."
"Is this it?" Mo Xiaohui handed the items to Li Nan, who accepted them without even looking and then said, "After all this running around, drink some of this to replenish your strength!"
Mo Xiaohui took a drip bottle and asked, "Can this be drunk?"
Li Nan smiled and said, "This is Glucose; it's usually for injection, but it works well orally too. You can give it a try!"
Mo Xiaohui was speechless; she had never seen anyone drink Glucose directly.
Seeing Mo Xiaohui hesitating, Li Nan boldly snatched the Glucose Bottle, flipped the cap, and immediately gulped down a few mouthfuls before handing it to Mo Xiaohui. "It won't kill you! Don't worry!"
At that moment, Mo Xiaohui's stomach growled in protest. "Alright!" Mo Xiaohui said, feeling a bit embarrassed as he took the Glucose Bottle from Li Nan and turned away to take a few sips.
Surprisingly, the Glucose was not sweet at all; it tasted just like plain water!
In fact, as an energy source for the human body, drinking Glucose directly provides little nutrition since it gets broken down into water and monosaccharides by the enzymes in gastric juice. Monosaccharides cannot be absorbed directly by the body, which is why Glucose is usually injected rather than taken orally. However, Li Nan didn't have time to inject it; he simply drank it like water!
Mo Xiaohui took a sip and then boldly downed the rest of the half bottle. Surprisingly, while it didn't fill him up, he felt a noticeable boost in his energy levels!
"Help me out!" Li Nan commanded Mo Xiaohui, much like a lead surgeon instructing a nurse at an operating table.
"Understood!" The now well-fed Mo Xiaohui, or rather well-hydrated Mo Xiaohui, complied eagerly, resembling a little nurse.
Li Nan used a syringe to dissolve the Mefenamic Acid that Mo Xiaohui brought with Saline Solution and then injected it into an IV bag for Liu Ziming, replenishing fluids while administering disinfectant medication.
"Can you see the vein? Give Liu Ziming an injection!" Li Nan stepped aside to prepare the medication while Mo Xiaohui looked confused. "How would I know how to do that?"
Li Nan replied expressionlessly, "Alright, I'll do it. You just watch and learn; medical knowledge will come in handy sooner or later!"
"Pinch Liu Ziming's right wrist tightly and apply some pressure!"
Mo Xiaohui nodded as Li Nan picked up the IV needle and felt around Liu Ziming's right hand. Spotting a prominent vein, he swiftly inserted the needle with precision.
Mo Xiaohui focused intently on Li Nan's technique but couldn't discern any particular skill involved.
Li Nan chuckled, "For those studying medicine, there's really no secret to it. Just be bold and attentive. When inserting the needle, aim carefully at the vein; there's not much technical skill beyond that!"
Mo Xiaohui nodded, seemingly understanding, while Li Nan said no more. He immediately tore open Liu Ziming's shirt, revealing a large area of flesh where the skin had been cut away.
Li Nan assessed Liu Ziming's injuries; the infection was quite severe, and relying solely on oral antibiotics was no longer effective. He needed to supplement with external methods, or else there would be little chance of improvement.
Li Nan opened a bottle of medical alcohol and evenly applied it to his hands. Then he carefully spread it over all of Liu Ziming's wounds. The delicate Zombie instinctively twitched at the stinging alcohol, but fortunately, Li Nan had mixed anesthetic into the IV drip, so Liu Ziming should now be in deep anesthesia and unable to feel pain.
Due to the lack of rubber gloves, Li Nan had to administer treatment with his bare hands. Thankfully, he was using medical alcohol; otherwise, the bacteria on his hands would have been enough to make Liu Ziming very ill.
Li Nan felt a tingling sensation in his hands, but this minor issue did not deter him. He took a surgical knife from Mo Xiaohui, sterilized it with alcohol, and proceeded to perform a secondary surgery on Liu Ziming's lower abdomen.
There had previously been a gunshot wound in Liu Ziming's lower abdomen, which Li Nan discovered during an MRI scan. Most importantly, there was a bullet fragment lodged inside.
During the Radiology examination, Li Nan noticed a dark spot inside Liu Ziming's lower abdomen. That dark spot turned out to be a bullet fragment about the size of a soybean. It was clear that the fragment had become embedded in Liu Ziming's body. If it hadn't been for that high-voltage electric shock incident, the bullet fragment might not have posed much of a problem. However, under high pressure, that soybean-sized bullet fragment exploded within Liu Ziming's body like a small bomb, scattering into different areas. One piece was dangerously close to the Heart!
Thus, everything Li Nan had done so far was merely superficial; the key to treating Liu Ziming's injuries lay in removing that shattered bullet fragment. The difficulty of such a surgery exceeded what Li Nan could handle.
Sweat poured down Li Nan's forehead uncontrollably, and Mo Xiaohui watched nervously from the side, occasionally using her sleeve to wipe his sweat away. She was proving to be quite an adept part-time nurse!
As a doctor, this was Li Nan's first time holding a surgical knife outside of practice and his first time performing a moderately difficult internal surgery as the lead surgeon. This challenge was undoubtedly the most difficult one he had faced since studying medicine!
