In that moment, Mo Xiaohui felt as if her world had turned gray. After experiencing so much at Jiangbei Hospital, she had finally managed to escape, only to run into the barrel of a Zombie's gun. More importantly, the scene where Li Nan had hidden from her had filled Mo Xiaohui with a suffocating sense of despair.
Mo Xiaohui opened her mouth wide, as if not letting out a hoarse scream would not be enough to express her fear and pessimism. At that moment, Li Nan had no time to think and immediately lunged at Mo Xiaohui.
Fortunately, Li Nan was faster than the Zombie. By the time the Zombie's hands swiped through the air, Li Nan had already wrapped his arms around Mo Xiaohui and crashed heavily onto the lawn.
Thank goodness it was the lawn; if it had been a tiled floor, Li Nan would have likely broken a rib from that impact.
Mo Xiaohui landed on top of Li Nan. Considering Li Nan's weight, it was no light burden. Li Nan couldn't fathom how he had managed to jump down from the twelfth floor unscathed, but he dared not hold onto any more luck.
Seeing that Mo Xiaohui was unharmed, Li Nan quickly kicked his legs and stood up. The Zombie ignored the one still lying on the lawn and charged directly at Li Nan.
Li Nan recognized this Zombie clearly; it was the same one he had seen in the parking lot earlier. He hadn't expected it to reappear after disappearing for a while.
At that moment, Li Nan felt a wave of shock. "Could it be that this Zombie was hiding on purpose and only attacked when it noticed Mo Xiaohui was alone? If that's the case, that's truly terrifying! If Zombies have intelligence, then the difference between them and humans becomes negligible, leaving humanity with no advantage at all!"
Li Nan was unarmed and feigned a punch. If the Zombie possessed intelligence, it would surely have the observational skills of sight, hearing, taste, and smell—an instinctive response for all intelligent beings to seek benefits and avoid harm.
The Zombie across from him appeared calm, seemingly oblivious to the punch coming its way. It simply opened its large mouth as if craving some delicious food.
Li Nan's fist wasn't made of iron; he couldn't let the Zombie take advantage of him. In that instant, he transformed his punch into an open palm and knocked away the Zombie's large head!
In an instant, Li Nan found himself covered in slime that he couldn't shake off.
"Disgusting!" Li Nan exclaimed repeatedly. However, he realized that the Zombie wasn't as formidable as he had imagined; at least it was still an unintelligent lower creature. Although its vitality was stronger than that of a cockroach, trash remained trash—becoming a devil wouldn't change these monsters' fundamentally grotesque nature.
It seemed that Li Nan had overthought things earlier. The reason the Zombie had disappeared for a while must have been mere coincidence or perhaps it had been following them all along but went unnoticed due to visibility issues!
Li Nan chuckled to himself, "Consider this your bad luck; let me raise my flag!"
Li Nan clenched his fist, first sweeping his left leg to knock the Zombie to the ground, and then smashing its head with a punch.
In an instant, pieces flew everywhere, like flowers scattered by a celestial maiden. Li Nan was already accustomed to such scenes and felt no fear; he simply extended the hand that had just thrown the punch towards Mo Xiaohui, saying, "Get up!"
Mo Xiaohui's face was smeared with red and white, and she did not bother to wipe it off. Li Nan's palm was covered with everything—bits of Zombie flesh, dark bloodstains, and broken bits of grass.
Mo Xiaohui did not reach for Li Nan's hand but stared blankly at everything around her: the dead Zombie, the dim sky above, and all that surrounded her.
To Mo Xiaohui, the outside world suddenly felt so strange. The unfamiliar environment and atmosphere made her think that escaping Jiangbei Hospital would free her from the nightmare. However, she did not expect that after desperately running out, the outside world was no different from inside; there were still Zombies and the constant danger of death. If everything before her was real, what was the point of escaping?
Seeing Mo Xiaohui in a daze, Li Nan felt a pang of sympathy, thinking that perhaps his earlier avoidance had created a barrier between them.
Li Nan forced a smile. "Get up! I was a bit overreactive earlier; please don't take it to heart!"
Now Li Nan had calmed down. The situation outside was still unclear—whether there were Zombies or if it was the apocalypse—he was just an ordinary person. Two ordinary people together still led an ordinary life; what right did he have to demand anything from Mo Xiaohui?
Lying on the grass, Mo Xiaohui suddenly burst into tears.
At that moment, Li Nan felt somewhat helpless; he dreaded when women cried because once they started, it could take hours for them to stop.
"Miss Mo, my dear aunt, please don’t do this!" Li Nan felt like crying without tears himself. He had just fought a Zombie and now had to comfort a woman; it seemed that an ordinary person faced difficulties in any situation!
Mo Xiaohui continued to cry with a mournful expression. When she finally grew tired of crying, she suddenly stood up from the lawn and threw herself back into Li Nan's arms.
This time, Li Nan did not shy away but gently patted Mo Xiaohui's back. "As you can see, the situation outside is not optimistic. However, I promise you that no matter how this world changes, I will do my utmost to protect you until you are capable of protecting yourself!"
Wiping her tears away, Mo Xiaohui hoarsely asked Li Nan, "The Zombie Virus has already spread in Jiangbei City, hasn't it? What about the rest of the country? The whole world? Is it possible that we are the only two left in this world?"
Li Nan smiled wryly and said, "If we are the last Survivors, then it's not just the two of us; there's also Han Guang."
After crying for so long, Mo Xiaohui finally dispelled the fear in her heart. Born into this world without a choice, now that the world has changed, there is no reason for people to maintain their original mindset. So Mo Xiaohui calmed down, thinking, "The apocalypse is the apocalypse! Zombies are just zombies! Life cannot be resisted; one must learn to comply!" Having spent a year gaining experience in the workplace, there was no reason for her not to adapt even a little.
Mo Xiaohui stood tall and said to Li Nan, "I understand why you were avoiding me earlier. It's because I was too timid, afraid even of a bug. In this apocalyptic environment, a weak little woman has little chance of survival, so you are..."
Li Nan cleared his throat and deliberately interrupted, "Let's not talk about that. Our situation isn't great right now; it's getting dark. We need to find a place to hide. Who knows how many Zombies are still around this hospital!"
Mo Xiaohui nodded. "You said your home is nearby, so let's go there!"
Li Nan turned his head to look in the direction of his home and said, "We need to move quickly!"
Since Mo Xiaohui had some trouble with her legs, Li Nan did not hesitate and gentlemanly bent down. "Let me carry you!"
Mo Xiaohui shook her head. "I need to walk this part myself; I want to change!"
Li Nan smiled, but just as he straightened up, a large white bug suddenly jumped out from the grass at his feet, about the size of half a palm, looking like a slimy frog.
Li Nan was startled. "What the heck is that? It's so scary!"
Mo Xiaohui chuckled lightly. "That's the bug that scared me earlier, but I'm not afraid anymore. It's just a bug! Watch me crush it!"
Li Nan stopped Mo Xiaohui. "Maybe we shouldn't! It's just a bug; there's no need to be so cruel to something that's not a Zombie!"
Hearing Li Nan's words, Mo Xiaohui paused and then laughed playfully. "Looks like you have quite a bit of compassion?"
Li Nan's face flushed red as he quickly replied, "Let's hurry up!"
As Li Nan and Mo Xiaohui turned around, their faces suddenly turned as pale as clay.
Behind them, in the parking lot, a dense crowd of Zombies surged forth, all dressed in green camouflage uniforms and wearing dark green helmets, clearly resembling soldiers.
Li Nan was greatly frightened; it turned out that the troops stationed outside Jiangbei Hospital had all been infected by Zombies. Moreover, the most critical issue was that they were all wearing helmets, making it difficult to shoot them in the head!
Mo Xiaohui forced herself to stay calm and turned to ask Li Nan, "What should we do now? Should we fight them head-on?"
Seeing Li Nan's legs trembling like a sieve, she suddenly lost her sense of security and began to tremble herself.
Li Nan grabbed Mo Xiaohui's hand, saying, "What are you thinking? In this situation, fighting is pointless; we need to run!"
Mo Xiaohui exclaimed and was pulled along by Li Nan. "Where should we run to? Ah! Those Zombies are already chasing us!"
Li Nan felt bitter inside. "Do I really need to give myself such a harsh reality check? Just a moment ago, I easily defeated one Zombie, and now I've got an army coming at me. Isn't this just slapping myself in the face?"
Fortunately, Mo Xiaohui did not hear Li Nan's inner thoughts; otherwise, she might start to doubt whether it was too foolish to believe in the promises made by this man before her.
Li Nan did not answer Mo Xiaohui's question. He was more familiar with the area around Jiangbei Hospital than anyone else; he knew where the small paths and shortcuts were. Since they couldn't confront that group of Zombies head-on, they could only avoid them intelligently.
