Li Nan felt very surprised because it was only after he shouted for a minute that a voice came from inside, "Could it be that the other party's reflexes are this slow?"
The question in Li Nan's mind was answered by Mo Xiaohui beside him, "Maybe they are hesitating; after all, not everyone who knocks on the door is a good person!"
Li Nan nodded and then shouted again, "I am Li Nan, living in 501 below. I am not a bad person!"
Mo Xiaohui smiled, "Where do you find a bad person who would reveal their identity? But don't you know who lives here?"
Li Nan shook his head. He really didn't know much about the residents of this building. However, he often saw some retired elderly people coming and going during his commute. It seemed that this building was mainly occupied by retirees, but as for who his neighbors were, he truly had no idea.
Just as Li Nan identified himself, another voice came from the room, "Who are you?"
Li Nan repeated, "I am Li Nan from the fifth floor. I have no ill intentions; I just want to see if there are any Survivors left in this hallway."
After a long pause, there was no response from inside. Just when Li Nan was frowning in confusion, the voice asked again, "Who are you?"
Now Mo Xiaohui couldn't help but laugh and cry at the same time, "Could it be that the person inside is a forgetful old man who keeps asking the same question?"
Li Nan felt puzzled about what was going on with the person inside. Did they really intend to tease him? With this thought, Li Nan couldn't help but feel a surge of anger. He had already been at a disadvantage with Mo Xiaohui, and now he was being toyed with by an inconsiderate old person. Life was becoming unbearable!
Filled with anger, Li Nan immediately applied force and used a Screwdriver to poke into the keyhole. Then he twisted his wrist and heard a mechanical sound of something breaking.
Mo Xiaohui looked shocked, "If you have such skills, why didn't you use them earlier?"
Li Nan turned to look at Mo Xiaohui and said, "I am an Intern Doctor, not a thief who breaks into doors!"
Mo Xiaohui stuck out her tongue and chuckled at Li Nan's seemingly unreasonable excuse. "Aren't you just a thief breaking in now? No, you should be called a robber!"
At that moment, Li Nan was indeed filled with rage, which led him to forcefully pry open the outer security door. However, as he stepped inside, his rationality took over. He lowered his voice and called out, "Excuse me, ma'am! We are intruding without an invitation; please don't take offense. We just want to..."
Mo Xiaohui followed Li Nan, sneaking in quietly, and the two of them were clearly like a pair of thieves entering a house.
It was Mo Xiaohui's first time being a thief, and she felt a bit nervous inside. Following behind Li Nan, she asked, "Do you think we will get caught by the police like this?"
Li Nan smiled, "Where are the police now? Didn't you see that the army outside has turned into Zombies? Besides, we haven't done anything wrong."
Seeing Li Nan's innocent expression, Mo Xiaohui couldn't help but chuckle. "Breaking in with the intent to rob and kill isn't a small crime, is it?"
Li Nan shook his head. "Who said I wanted to rob or kill? There are Survivors in this house; I won't just ignore them. I only want to save her!"
Mo Xiaohui fell silent and simply followed behind Li Nan like a little cat as they crept into the living room.
This house was much larger than Li Nan's room downstairs, with at least 120 square meters of space. It had a kitchen, bathroom, storage room, and three bedrooms. It seemed that this family lived quite well and had two children.
In the living room stood a large sofa, and on the left wall was an old Liquid Crystal Television. There were also several small cabinets on either side. Li Nan walked ahead and called out as a gesture, "We mean no harm; we just want to check on your situation!"
Mo Xiaohui elbowed Li Nan from behind. "Don't you think that by barging in like this, even if we have no ill intentions, it still seems malicious? Who would stay calm in this situation? We might end up in conflict!"
Actually, Li Nan also realized his recklessness; it was definitely not wise to barge in like this. But since they had already come in, should they just turn back now? The most important thing was that Li Nan felt something suspicious about the people inside!
When outside the door, Li Nan had heard faint sounds from within but didn't pay much attention. However, hearing the same phrase repeatedly later raised his suspicions. Could there really be someone joking around in this apocalypse?
Suddenly, Li Nan bumped into a vase and nearly fell over. Fortunately, Mo Xiaohui was quick-witted and caught the falling vase firmly in her hands. "If you break their things, even if you have a reason later on, it won't matter anymore!"
At that moment, a voice suddenly came from the living room, "Who are you?"
Li Nan looked around in confusion but saw no one. He could only politely respond, "I've said it many times already; I'm your neighbor from the fifth floor. My name is Li Nan!"
Li Nan's voice echoed as his eyes scanned left and right, hoping to find the source of the voice.
The voice sounded slightly hoarse, suggesting it belonged to an elderly woman, but her combat ability should not be underestimated. Therefore, until the situation became clearer, Li Nan had to remain cautious.
"Auntie, where are you? We won't harm you!" Li Nan called out, while Mo Xiaohui pointed towards the back of the sofa in the living room, indicating that the voice had come from there!
Li Nan frowned; he had also identified the source of the sound. What puzzled him most was that there was no space behind the sofa at all—there was simply no way for someone to hide there!
Li Nan leaned closer and shouted again, "Auntie, we really aren't bad people; you don't need to be on guard against us!"
At that moment, a voice indeed came from behind the sofa, "Who are you?"
Now Li Nan suspected that there was a tape recorder behind the sofa that had been switched on, repeatedly asking, "Who are you?" He began to wonder who would be so bored as to do something like this in their own home!
Mo Xiaohui shrank behind Li Nan, seemingly finding everything he was contemplating to be bizarre.
She trembled slightly and weakly asked, "Do you think there are ghosts in this world?"
Li Nan hid his left hand behind his back, signaling Mo Xiaohui to remain quiet. He wanted to investigate what exactly was behind the sofa!
Mo Xiaohui held a screwdriver against her chest and leaped over to the back of the sofa. At that moment, a shadow suddenly sprang up, creating a gust of air that hit Li Nan's face.
Li Nan was startled. "What ghosts? They're so fast?"
After missing his target, Li Nan looked around; there was nothing behind the sofa. Meanwhile, Mo Xiaohui shouted, "That thing is on your head!"
"Damn!" Li Nan jolted and immediately waved his hands above his head for a while, but he didn't touch anything. "Could it really be a ghost?"
"Ha ha ha," Mo Xiaohui laughed continuously in front of the sofa, while a series of sounds came from above Li Nan's head, "Who are you? Who are you?..."
This situation had already left Li Nan puzzled, and suddenly looking up, he saw a large bird circling above the chandelier in the living room. To be precise, it was a parrot.
In an instant, Li Nan couldn't help but chuckle; clearly, he had been teased by this parrot all along.
Mo Xiaohui stared at the parrot by the chandelier and exclaimed, "What a big bird! So colorful and beautiful!"
Li Nan sat on the sofa, letting out a long sigh. It seemed he had been overly suspicious, getting flustered over a mere bird.
Now, Li Nan didn't want to bother with the bird anymore. He could basically confirm that there was no one else in the house. After all this commotion, if there were anyone around, they would have shown themselves!
Li Nan got up from the sofa and checked each room to further confirm that there were no survivors in the house. Throughout the entire place, aside from that parrot, there was not a single living creature.
The absence of people was just to Li Nan's liking; as long as there were no owners around, he could feel justified in playing the role of a burglar.
The family seemed to live well and even had a son and a daughter because Li Nan saw a family portrait in the master bedroom. A middle-aged couple stood beside their children in their twenties, looking very happy.
Mo Xiaohui focused on the family portrait on the wall, while Li Nan felt it was rather dull since there was nothing useful in the master bedroom. He lost interest and instead ran to the kitchen to see if there was any food available.
It seemed that the son and daughter did not live at home for long because only two sets of chopsticks were placed on the dining table along with some fried dough sticks that had already gone moldy. Considering that the owners were not home, Li Nan speculated that they must have been attacked by zombies while out for a walk on the morning after the Zombie Virus outbreak, which explained why breakfast remained intact on the table.
Li Nan wasn't interested in the moldy breakfast. After rummaging around, he discovered a fifty-pound bag of rice in the kitchen and found a piece of pork tenderloin along with several vegetables in the refrigerator. Since there had been no power outage, they were still relatively fresh. Altogether, these items weighed about a hundred pounds!
Li Nan hoisted the bag of rice over his shoulder and tucked an already filled box of food under his arm, preparing to leave when Mo Xiaohui lingered in one of the bedrooms.
"That's enough; we've gathered quite a haul. We need to leave!"
Mo Xiaohui slowly walked out from the back, saying, "Almost there, almost there!"
Li Nan thought it was just a woman's trouble, but robbing wasn't like shopping; why linger so much?
Two minutes later, Mo Xiaohui came out carrying a luggage bag, struggling with it in her hands.
Li Nan casually asked, "What did you find?"
Mo Xiaohui smiled and replied, "I found this luggage bag, and inside I found a few pieces of clothing. The owner's children are about our size, so they can be worn!"
Li Nan snorted and hoisted a half bucket of purified water onto his shoulder, filling both shoulders while also squeezing something under his arm, looking quite burdened.
Mo Xiaohui held the luggage bag and watched Li Nan prepare to leave, unwilling to move.
Noticing something unusual about Mo Xiaohui, Li Nan asked, "What do you want now?"
Mo Xiaohui's gaze fell on the chandelier in the living room. Li Nan looked over and couldn't help but exclaim quietly, "No way!"
