Mo Xiaohui seemed very interested in Li Nan's situation, so when she caught hold of Li Nan and his older brother, the questions kept coming.
Li Nan chuckled, "He and I are not the same type of person, and there's really nothing to say!"
Mo Xiaohui was not planning to give up. "What is your brother's name? Your name is Li Nan, so I guess he wouldn't be called Li Dong, right?"
Li Nan reluctantly nodded, "You guessed it right, his name is indeed Li Dong!"
At this point, Mo Xiaohui was already laughing uncontrollably. "Your family has quite an interesting naming convention—East, South, West, North. If you had a younger brother, you could name him Li Hongzhong, and then you'd have a complete set of Mahjong tiles!"
Li Nan maintained a serious expression, seemingly unimpressed by Mo Xiaohui's joke.
Mo Xiaohui might have realized that her joke was a bit excessive, so she quickly changed the subject. "Since you don't want to talk about yourself, I can share something about me!"
Li Nan responded with an "Oh," indicating he was listening.
Mo Xiaohui adjusted the parrot on her shoulder and began to speak confidently. "I've been working at the television station for a year now. A month ago, I launched my own tailored TV program and was later hailed as the station's star. Did you think all of this required a lot of hard work?"
Li Nan nodded. "To succeed at anything requires effort, so you're quite lucky!"
Mo Xiaohui replied earnestly, "You're mistaken. The reason I have such great opportunities and luck isn't because of my personal abilities; it's simply because of my dad. He imposed some so-called glory onto me!"
Li Nan was puzzled by this but Mo Xiaohui continued, "If I tell you my dad's name, you'll definitely be shocked!"
Li Nan's mind raced through all the tough names he knew from Jiangbei City, but he couldn't recall anyone with the surname Mo. Could it be that Mo Xiaohui had an impressive background?
Mo Xiaohui's expression darkened considerably. "Forget it; that man left my mom and me when I was very young. Ten years later, he came back successful and famous. But so what? My mom passed away from lung cancer two years ago, so no matter what he does, I will never forgive him!"
As they spoke, Mo Xiaohui's expression grew somewhat agitated, while Li Nan interrupted at an appropriate moment, saying, "Dinner is ready; let's eat first!"
Mo Xiaohui seemed to have tears in her eyes, and the parrot on her shoulder wisely moved to the windowsill.
As Li Nan had mentioned earlier, dinner consisted of vegetable noodles, while the parrot was treated to a more lavish meal: an apple and a kumquat. This was the only fruit Li Nan had scavenged from the eighth floor, meant as a greeting gift for the creature, hoping it would never peck at him again.
Li Nan served a bowl of noodles to Mo Xiaohui and handed it over, saying, "Everyone has their own struggles; it was true before and it is true now. However, when the world is turned upside down, we can temporarily overlook those hardships. Surviving is what matters most!"
Mo Xiaohui's mood shifted rapidly; just moments ago she looked like she might cry, but in an instant, she regained her composure and said nonchalantly, "It's a small matter. My situation was similar to yours back then. But later I met a wealthy father figure. Although I hate him, I won't pass up any benefits! That Lamborghini you saw was a gift from him, but you ended up smashing it!"
Li Nan was taken aback; this woman was indeed a natural actress, able to switch emotions effortlessly without any pressure.
Li Nan said earnestly, "Let's take a good rest for now. Tomorrow we need to go out to find supplies; I believe it will take a lot of physical effort!"
Mo Xiaohui looked surprised and asked, "We have enough food here for a week; why do we need to venture out?"
Li Nan shook his head. "It's better to prepare in advance than to scramble at the last minute. Some things are best done early to avoid being left with nothing later!"
After finishing her noodles, Mo Xiaohui lay back on the bed, seemingly lost in thought. Li Nan paid no mind and gathered all the trash in the room into a bundle before tossing it out of the window.
As Li Nan leaned out of the window, he saw more than ten zombies swirling below. Though their faces were unrecognizable now, their clothing indicated they were neighbors from his building.
Li Nan slammed the window shut and said to Mo Xiaohui, "Get some sleep! It's getting late!"
Mo Xiaohui picked up the alarm clock on her bedside table; it was only seven in the evening. What young person would be sleeping at this hour?
Leaning against the bed, Mo Xiaohui stared blankly for a moment before her gaze fell on the computer desk nearby. She then got up to turn on the computer; for now, there was still water and electricity in this building. She wondered how the internet was holding up!
Mo Xiaohui was greatly disappointed to find that the notebook on the computer desk couldn't connect to the internet at all, and could only serve as a gaming device for offline play.
However, while rummaging through the computer desk, Mo Xiaohui stumbled upon an old Nokia phone. After fiddling with it, she found that it could still power on, but there was no SIM card.
Now, Li Nan and Mo Xiaohui felt like two castaways on a deserted island, completely cut off from any means of information. Their phones had likely been lost somewhere in the hospital, and after escaping from there, they hadn't encountered any other living souls. This was why Mo Xiaohui was willing to give it a try!
"Do you think we should look for a phone and try to call for help? Maybe we can find a lifeline," she suggested.
Li Nan, already lying on the ground, sighed, "The internet is down, so telecommunications must be too. You're being overly optimistic. I suspect that this city's power and water systems will fail within ten days as well. Relying on others is less effective than relying on ourselves; we need to come up with our own solutions!"
Mo Xiaohui placed her hands on her chest and continued to ask, "What kind of solution?"
Li Nan shook his head. "I don't know either. The food in this building will eventually run out, and our supplies will be depleted. We can't stay here for long; we have to leave sooner or later!"
Mo Xiaohui was taken aback. "So when do we go out?"
"We'll see when the rain stops or when we feel capable enough to venture out."
A parrot landed on the computer desk and became quiet, closing its eyes and entering a state of sleep.
Mo Xiaohui tried to mimic the parrot and slowly closed her eyes, but she couldn't fall asleep. She wondered just how bad things had gotten outside and if there were still one or two survivors left. Would it be extremely dangerous when they finally stepped outside?
All of this was filled with uncertainty, and Mo Xiaohui had little confidence about tomorrow. Perhaps if she fell asleep tonight, she might not see the sun rise again. This way of life felt too raw and crude, as if she had returned to the Neolithic era—humanity reduced to insignificance, and the world turned cruel once more.
Li Nan also closed his eyes. After escaping Jiangbei Hospital, he hadn't encountered any immediate danger, but he had witnessed the desolation and brutality of this apocalyptic world. The burden of survival grew heavier by the day.
Listening to the sound of rain outside, Li Nan felt somewhat relieved. "In this apocalyptic downpour with the Zombie Virus, it all seems like a natural disaster!"
The sound of rain outside grew heavier, and Li Nan's drowsiness deepened. Just as he had completely relaxed, the parrot in the room began to chatter incessantly.
When Li Nan opened his eyes, he saw the parrot flitting around as if startled by something.
Li Nan couldn't understand what had gotten into the parrot, but disturbing his peaceful dreams was absolutely unforgivable, especially coming from a winged creature!
Mo Xiaohui also woke up from her drowsiness and spoke to calm the parrot, "Hui Xiaomo, stop it, be quiet, don't make any more noise!"
Previously, the parrot seemed quite intelligent and understanding, but at this moment, it was as restless as a bull, calling out in a hoarse voice, "Someone, someone..."
Li Nan was completely baffled by what the parrot was trying to convey, and he felt a surge of irritation; this creature was just too damn annoying.
Just as Li Nan pulled out the screwdriver from his pocket, a sudden sound came from the door behind him.
Li Nan was startled. "What’s going on? Who's knocking at this hour?"
Mo Xiaohui also heard the noise outside and immediately stood still, while the parrot continued to flap its wings restlessly, shouting, "Someone, someone..."
The parrot's mimicry sounded urgent, and given the situation, it seemed to be referring to the person behind the door.
Li Nan was filled with suspicion. "Could it be that this parrot has discovered something?"
He shifted his focus away from the parrot and concentrated on the doorknob.
"Knock knock..." A series of knocks echoed, suggesting that there was more than one person outside and they were in a hurry.
Li Nan held up the screwdriver and slowly brought his eye to the peephole. Through the refracted glass, he vaguely saw shadows of people behind the door—about a dozen—and they appeared to be wet, likely having just come in from the rain.
Li Nan focused intently, and suddenly, an eyeball came close, directly blocking his line of sight.
Instinctively, Li Nan took a step back, a cold sweat instantly trickling down his back, for the pupil he saw was truly horrifying.
In a dark gray eye socket, there was a dull, lifeless eyeball, half-rotted and oozing a thick black liquid that bubbled like boiling water.
Li Nan shivered and tightened his grip on the screwdriver in his hand. Behind him, Mo Xiaohui asked urgently, "Who is behind the door?"
Li Nan shook his head. "It doesn't matter who they are; what matters is that you definitely don't want to see them!"
Mo Xiaohui understood Li Nan's words, recalling the events from the eighth floor during the day. However, the scene had changed now, and their roles had reversed; they had become the ones being broken in on!
Li Nan thought of something and shouted to Mo Xiaohui, "Go to the window and look down. Are there any zombies outside?"
Mo Xiaohui hurried to the window, peering down. Due to the dim light, she couldn't make out anything. "I don't know; I can't see anything outside!"
Li Nan braced himself against the door, listening to the increasingly frantic banging, a chill rising in his heart.
