In the living room of the new house, Li Nan stood alone in front of the window, seemingly lost in thought.
Outside, the autumn rain fell heavily, bringing a chill that seemed to have no effect on Li Nan, who stared blankly with hollow eyes, devoid of any spirit.
As noon approached, the unit door outside on the first floor had been securely locked, and there were no issues with the doors and windows of this house. For the time being, there would be no zombies crashing into the building from outside!
As for the issue of clearing out any threats inside the building, Li Nan was already contemplating it. He needed to eliminate all dangers here before Mo Xiaohui was capable of taking care of both their survival needs.
At that moment, Mo Xiaohui was busy cleaning the room like a diligent housewife. All the supplies they had brought in were hidden away in the kitchen, just in case!
Hearing the sounds behind him, Li Nan smiled and said, "We won't be staying here long; there's really no need to clean so thoroughly!"
Mo Xiaohui dismissed his comment, saying, "A home should look like a home. Even though we don't know how many days we can stay here, we should still put in some effort!"
Li Nan thought about how messy his previous place had been and decided not to bring it up. The differences between men and women were becoming apparent.
Li Nan turned around, intending to return to his room for a rest. Seeing this, Mo Xiaohui hurriedly leaned over to support him and took his arm to lead the way.
Li Nan's left hand held onto Mo Xiaohui's hand while his right hand reached out into the air in front of him as he stumbled along. After about two minutes of navigating through bumps and obstacles, he finally made it from the living room to his room.
The room was arranged by Mo Xiaohui. Since the owner of this house had a son and a daughter, there were two guest rooms. Mo Xiaohui and Li Nan were separated by one room each, with their doors facing each other.
Mo Xiaohui helped Li Nan lie down on the bed and softly said, "You rest for a bit; I'll go prepare lunch right away!"
After making sure Li Nan was comfortable, Mo Xiaohui gently half-closed the door. Hearing her footsteps as she left, Li Nan sat up halfway on the bed.
His vision remained blurry, and the black blood around his eyes had not been completely washed away. The blood vessels covering his eyeballs slowly seeped into his pupils, spreading deep into his visual nerves!
Li Nan pretended to be relaxed in front of Mo Xiaohui because he didn't want to put unnecessary pressure on her; some things needed to be faced alone by a man.
He felt that the sensation in his eyes was no longer just a burning pain but rather a deep ache as if long needles were slowly piercing through flesh. It felt like an invasion of foreign objects into his body; at that moment, his facial muscles were nearly paralyzed, unable to express any pain. He could only feel spasms coursing through him as if thousands of ants were biting at his eyes!
Li Nan instinctively covered his head and buried himself under the blanket, breathing rapidly, his face turning purple, resembling someone on the verge of death.
Li Nan was studying medicine, and he knew what a person looked like when they were about to pass away. Typically, if a person dies naturally, their body would provide some feedback indicating that their time was near. In other words, they would feel that their end was approaching. However, in the case of an unnatural death, the circumstances could be bizarre and varied. Right now, Li Nan felt as if a needle-like object had invaded his body through his eyes, and at that moment, he was truly prepared to bid farewell to this world.
This world was so terrible that there was nothing worth holding onto anymore. As Li Nan lingered on the brink of death, he wondered, "Is this how I die?"
In a hazy state, a ray of light entered the room where Li Nan was, bringing warmth. Half sunlight and half rainwater, Li Nan felt as if his body was drenched in cold rain while that bright ray of light flickered before him and then vanished without a trace.
"Don't go!" Li Nan shouted out loud. He wanted to chase after that thing brighter and warmer than sunlight, but in his pursuit, he realized he was merely treading in place, growing further away from what he longed to reach.
"Why? Why am I all alone here?" Li Nan asked himself but found no answers. Just then, a voice came from behind him, "Who says you're alone? I'm still here!"
Li Nan turned around at the sound but found nothing behind him—just emptiness and desolation.
"Who are you?" Li Nan questioned.
"Don't you recognize me?" The voice echoed again. When it reached Li Nan's ears, he suddenly realized, "Maybe this world isn't as bad as I imagined. I still have responsibilities; there's that woman named Mo Xiaohui who needs my care. I can't stop; I mustn't!"
"You finally remembered my name!"
At that moment, a figure slowly appeared before Li Nan—a woman dressed in light-colored clothing with long hair cascading over her shoulders and eyes filled with tears. Li Nan felt as if he were melting away; a surge of determination erupted from his chest and surged into his mind, instantly bringing clarity.
Lying on the bed, Li Nan suddenly opened his eyes to find everything still shrouded in darkness.
He raised his hand to wipe the sweat from his forehead and then placed it on the bed. His body jolted when he realized the blanket was soaked through—he could practically wring water out of it!
"Knock knock," Mo Xiaohui said from outside the door in a soft voice. "Lunch is ready; do you want to come out and eat something?"
Li Nan cleared his throat, feeling tightness in it, and managed to croak out a response, "Okay!"
Hearing Li Nan's slightly hoarse voice, Mo Xiaohui felt a bit worried and immediately rushed in, pressing against Li Nan and asking with concern, "Are you okay?"
Li Nan nodded, "I'm fine! Completely fine!"
Mo Xiaohui's gaze fell on the bed and noticed that the blanket was completely wet. She thought to herself, "It's only been half an hour, how did you manage to wet the bed!"
Li Nan shook his head, "It's not what you think!"
Mo Xiaohui reached out, folded the blanket, and found it covered in sticky sweat. She then turned to Li Nan in surprise, "Are you really okay? I feel like you're not in great shape!"
Li Nan pointed at his eyes and then self-deprecatingly said, "Is this what you're talking about? I think I'm starting to get used to this state!"
Mo Xiaohui waved her hands in front of Li Nan's face but saw he still had no reaction. She immediately felt disheartened, "No matter what, we need to solve your hunger first. Come on, let's eat!"
Mo Xiaohui rolled up the bedding and went to another master bedroom to fetch a set of clean bedding. Then she helped Li Nan out, preparing to eat.
After a lot of effort, Mo Xiaohui didn't manage to make anything fancy. She originally wanted to make fried rice but found there were no eggs, so she had to give up. Besides boiling instant noodles and making fried rice, she really couldn't cook anything else. In the end, she could only grit her teeth and boil the remaining bags of hanging noodles, which was basically the same process as cooking instant noodles.
At the dining table, Mo Xiaohui served Li Nan a bowl of hanging noodles and placed a bottle of Lao Gan Ma beside him. Then she handed him chopsticks, saying, "You can eat now!"
Li Nan held the bowl of noodles in his left hand and the chopsticks in his right hand, digging into his meal while Mo Xiaohui used her chopsticks to add some Lao Gan Ma for him.
When their chopsticks touched in Li Nan's bowl, Mo Xiaohui suddenly withdrew her hand and softly said, "I can't cook anything else; we can only settle for this simple meal. You don't mind, do you?"
Li Nan quickly ate the noodles, finishing the bowl in half a minute. "This is already great! Compared to wandering around like a Zombie outside, this lunch can be considered a feast!"
Mo Xiaohui laughed and said, "It would be nice to live like this for a few days—comfortable and leisurely!"
Mo Xiaohui served Li Nan another bowl of noodles. After receiving it, Li Nan reached out with his chopsticks to grab some Lao Gan Ma.
The chopsticks were brought down onto the table, and after a crisp sound, Mo Xiaohui could no longer hold back her tears, which fell in two streams.
Mo Xiaohui picked up the Lao Gan Ma that was beside Li Nan and placed it under his chopsticks, saying, "Here, if you want to eat, I can help you!"
Li Nan smiled, "It's nothing; I can handle it myself!"
When Mo Xiaohui escaped from Jiangbei Hospital, she felt incredibly lucky. Even under the ironclad confinement, she managed to break free. This kind of luck was rare. As she and Li Nan faced the outside world together, she still felt fortunate because she had met a man who could protect her. After experiencing so much together, she had come to regard Li Nan as her lucky charm; as long as she was with him, they could turn danger into safety. But what about this time?
Tears streamed down Mo Xiaohui's face for both herself and Li Nan. The outcome was too cruel for a man like him. She would rather be the one hurt than see him suffer.
Li Nan was still eating noodles, and Mo Xiaohui deliberately held back her sobs. However, as she watched him, she noticed something unexpected.
Mo Xiaohui stared at Li Nan and said, "You can open your eyes now; why is the Black Blood inside gone?"
Li Nan didn't know what was happening with his eyes and asked in return, "Are you saying that the Black Blood that was hard to remove from my eyes has disappeared?"
Mo Xiaohui nodded vigorously and replied, "Yes! But it seems like there is a thin film over your pupils; I don't know what it is!"
Li Nan didn't quite understand what Mo Xiaohui meant. He just waved his hand in front of his eyes but still couldn't see anything—not even a shadow!
