While Li Nan was dreaming, he suddenly felt a small hand beside his face, soft and smooth. Just by the touch, he could tell it belonged to a beautiful woman. Li Nan grabbed the small hand and rubbed it against his face, but the owner of the hand smiled and said, "Why did you shut me out last night, only to pull me into your bed this morning? What do you mean by that?"
Hearing the voice, Li Nan realized he wasn't dreaming. He quickly sat up in bed and saw Mo Xiaohui leaning closer.
Li Nan snorted lightly, "How did you get into my room?"
Mo Xiaohui pouted, "Didn't you say we were leaving this morning? Have you even looked at the time?"
Li Nan glanced at his watch; it was already six-thirty. He exclaimed in surprise, "There's just enough time! We can pack up and head out!"
Mo Xiaohui watched Li Nan get dressed and silently murmured, "Goodbye, my big house! Goodbye, my warm home!"
Li Nan smiled, "We can find something better! Trust me!"
Mo Xiaohui nodded and then brought out some food from the kitchen for their breakfast.
After packing everything up, Li Nan slung on his backpack, put on a waterproof raincoat, wore waterproof boots scavenged from nearby, held a bright red fire axe in one hand, and had a screwdriver tucked into his waistband. He was ready to go.
Mo Xiaohui also wore a raincoat and carried a small luggage bag wrapped in plastic with one hand while holding a birdcage containing a parrot named Hui Xiaomo with the other. A climbing pick hung from her waist for self-defense.
They packed everything they could carry; Li Nan's load was about a hundred pounds while Mo Xiaohui's bag weighed around forty to fifty pounds. There was no choice; it was better to be prepared even if it meant making things difficult for them temporarily.
Li Nan felt that carrying the parrot would be cumbersome and suggested strongly that Mo Xiaohui leave it behind.
Mo Xiaohui shook her head. "No way! It saved our lives; we can't abandon it!"
Li Nan also shook his head. "When a woman gets stubborn, not even nine oxen can pull her back! Fine! But you'll have to carry this parrot yourself!"
So, Mo Xiaohui followed behind Li Nan with her luggage bag and birdcage as they slowly made their way downstairs.
The heavy rain had lessened but showed no signs of stopping. The entire outside world seemed to be submerged in water.
In the span of three or four days, Mo Xiaohui finally walked down the stairs for the first time. Immediately, she felt the cold, drenching rain hitting her body, sending chills through her.
Li Nan was in front, raising his Fire Axe and directly knocking down several Zombies that had gathered below. Black blood and flesh splattered into the puddles, while Li Nan turned back to ask Mo Xiaohui, "Are you okay?"
Mo Xiaohui nodded. Looking at the three Zombies that had just rushed over, she recalled the group from last night that had gathered downstairs to loot corpses. It seemed they were the same ones!
Mo Xiaohui hesitated and said, "There were clearly more than three Zombies downstairs last night, but now there are only three. Where did the other two go?"
Li Nan shrugged it off. "They probably wandered off. Zombies primarily feed on living humans, so their movement is quite high. It's the same for them! But this doesn't concern us; just stay close behind me and don't get lost!"
Mo Xiaohui scoffed, "Do you think I'm still that scared little girl from Jiangbei Hospital? I've changed!"
Li Nan grunted softly, "You better have!"
After dealing with the three attacking Zombies downstairs, Li Nan and the others exited through the community's main gate. Although the rain limited their speed, they managed to leave the area within five minutes.
Once outside the community, Li Nan checked his bearings and said to Mo Xiaohui, "As we discussed this morning, we should head south towards the Old Town District. After it was demolished, there have been fewer residents there, making it relatively safer!"
Mo Xiaohui nodded. "Since we've made a decision, why aren't we moving?"
Li Nan shook his head. "There's one issue we didn't consider: to get to Old Town District, we have to pass through Jiangbei Hospital. You know what that's like; there are thousands of Zombies there. We can't get through!"
At this moment, Mo Xiaohui also recalled their frantic escape earlier and immediately suggested, "Then let's take a detour; it doesn't matter if it's a bit longer!"
Li Nan's expression turned sour. "If we take a detour, we'll have to go around through the city center. We can't go there! There are likely plenty of Zombies as well!"
Despite all their calculations, they had ultimately overlooked one crucial detail that could cost both Li Nan and Mo Xiaohui their lives.
Gritting his teeth, Li Nan said, "We definitely can't go to Old Town District now. Let's head towards the outskirts instead. The route may be a bit remote, but it should be safer!"
At this moment, Mo Xiaohui was also at a loss and could only follow Li Nan's arrangements. "You are my backbone; whatever you say goes!"
Li Nan felt warmth in his heart. "Don't worry! I will definitely take you to a safe place!"
After several days of heavy rain, the city was already flooded, and in the shallower areas, the water had risen to Li Nan's calves. In some depressions, the water had accumulated to several meters deep, enough to drown someone.
After leaving Happy Community and walking two streets, Li Nan changed their direction to head north. Jiangbei City was a newly developed city that had transitioned from a prefecture-level city to a provincial-level city in its early years. Therefore, there were still many suburban areas on the outskirts, which were less populated than the city center, ensuring safety.
With his mind made up, Li Nan led Mo Xiaohui northward. After about ten minutes, Mo Xiaohui complained, "Why is the water so deep? I feel like we are not in a city but in Venice!"
Li Nan smiled wryly. "With the heavy rain still pouring, we should be grateful that we aren't drowning. Besides, this flooding has its advantages; while it's bad for people, it's even worse for Zombies. Look over there; there are a few bloated corpses floating!"
Mo Xiaohui turned his gaze away from the falling raindrops and saw several corpses floating about twenty meters away. They were so swollen they resembled balloons; if it weren't for their clothes, Mo Xiaohui wouldn't have recognized them as human forms.
Li Nan took out a length of rope from his backpack. "The road ahead may be flat or it might be bumpy. To ensure everything goes smoothly, let's tie this around our waists so we can remind each other in time!"
Mo Xiaohui took the rope from Li Nan and joked, "Have you heard of the red thread of fate that the Matchmaker God uses? I feel like this is somewhat similar!"
Chatty as ever, Mo Xiaohui continued talking while Li Nan didn't want to engage in such unproductive conversation anymore. He straightened his face and continued forward.
Before long, Mo Xiaohui called out from behind, "Those corpses are drifting toward us!"
Li Nan turned around and indeed saw seven or eight corpses floating toward them at a fast speed, already surpassing their pace.
Looking ahead, Li Nan realized something was wrong; he and Mo Xiaohui had walked into a low-lying area where there was a storm drain. It seemed that the drain cover had been crushed under immense water pressure, creating a siphon effect that caused the surrounding water to rush toward that outlet.
Li Nan and Mo Xiaohui were positioned on a main road; however, due to its remote location, vehicles were rare and they hadn't encountered any Zombies—except for those floating bodies. He wondered where they had come from.
The water had reached Li Nan's knees. Initially intending to bypass this section of road, he found that it was shallower here compared to other paths. However, as he moved further in, the water only got deeper. Just as Li Nan realized he wanted to turn back, those seven or eight corpses had already drifted closer!
Li Nan just saw the broken manhole cover in the middle of the road, and as the water rushed down, he couldn't help but curse, "All the money has gone to waste, and they can't even use decent materials for the city's infrastructure. Damn it!"
At that moment, Mo Xiaohui shouted again, "It's not just seven or eight bodies; it's dozens!"
Li Nan looked around and saw that wherever there was water, it was all flowing towards him. The surface was cluttered with pots, socks, dead dogs, dead rats, and among them were countless bodies!
This was truly a case of sheep entering a tiger's den; it was unbearable!
The current situation was that Li Nan and his companion felt like they had fallen into a toilet, and someone had accidentally flushed from above. Although the knee-deep water in a half-meter diameter drain wouldn't create much of a current, Li Nan and Mo Xiaohui could definitely use their strength to swim against it. However, the problem now was that bodies were floating in from all sides, and those bodies surely didn't all die of natural causes or drowning!
"What should we do?" Mo Xiaohui asked Li Nan, who hadn't expected things to escalate to this point. Standing still was definitely not an option; they had to actively find a way out.
Li Nan countered Mo Xiaohui, "Which direction do you think has fewer bodies?"
Mo Xiaohui shook his head, "I have a phobia of crowds; with so many things floating around, I can't distinguish anything anymore!"
Li Nan weighed the Fire Axe in his hand and then shouted to Mo Xiaohui, "Run to the left, stay behind me, and don't fall behind!"
Before Mo Xiaohui could react, Li Nan had already started running with great strides, splashing water everywhere as if he were playing in it!
