Under the asphalt road, there was a patch of muddy ground, and the soil quality was poor, exhibiting characteristics of sludge. After several days of heavy rain, even yellow sand would turn into liquid mud.
Li Nan noticed a distinct footprint leading towards the abandoned two-story building, indicating a heavy weight. Judging by the spacing of the steps, it seemed that the person had to exert considerable effort.
Li Nan stepped into the muck, finding his foot stuck and unable to pull it out for a long time. His shoes were already filled with muddy water, making it difficult to move.
Ignoring the mud on his soles, Li Nan mimicked the staggering steps and made his way over.
The distance of three to four hundred meters took him a full ten minutes to traverse. As he recalled the footprints he had discovered earlier, a sense of pity suddenly arose in his heart.
Li Nan observed that the footprints were quite small; if the person was not a woman, they must be a child!
Having realized this, Li Nan felt somewhat relieved. If the individual lacked any offensive capability, he could afford to lower his guard a bit.
Upon reaching the building, Li Nan wiped the rainwater off his face and lifted the brim of his hat to broaden his field of vision.
The interior of the building was spacious but cluttered with various construction debris. It seemed that after the main structure was completed, work had halted for some unknown reason, leaving it abandoned.
Holding a fire axe in one hand, Li Nan surveyed the first floor but found nothing of interest. He then decided to head up to the second floor.
The hallway was marked with many water stains. Looking up, Li Nan noticed a hole in the ceiling where rainwater was pouring through. He paid it no mind and continued upstairs.
Above the leaking spot, he found more water marks. These traces were undoubtedly left by the person who stole food last night; due to the humid air, they had not dried yet.
Li Nan had roughly determined the person's location and was now ready to catch the thief in action.
After passing a concrete wall, Li Nan discovered a pile of household garbage, mostly consisting of plastic bags and tissues, while a trail of water extended into a room behind it.
Without much thought, Li Nan crouched down and slipped into the bare room.
Looking around, it was empty, and the rough concrete marks on the walls made him feel quite uncomfortable. Just as Li Nan was filled with suspicion, a sharp object suddenly pressed against his lower back.
At the same time, a voice came from behind him, "Drop the axe, or my knife will definitely stab into your spleen!"
"Trapped!" Li Nan's first reaction was that he had been ambushed, and the wet trail he had seen earlier was clearly left intentionally by the person behind him.
Li Nan let go, and the crimson Fire Axe fell to the ground. The person standing behind him continued, "Kick it away, at least three meters from your body!"
Li Nan complied and then said to the person behind him, "As you said, I've put down my weapon. What do you want to do now?"
The person behind him asked, "Why did you come looking for me? Was it for that bag of food?"
Li Nan shook his head. "Not at all. Our vehicle is stuck here and we can't get out, so we were looking for a place to take shelter. I have no idea what you're talking about regarding a bag of food!"
Li Nan wanted to lean forward to see the person behind him, but suddenly felt pressure at his lower back. "Don't turn around, or I'll kill you!"
Li Nan feigned pain and quickly said, "Please don't! You know what kind of hell the outside world has become. I can't survive alone. If you don't mind, we could team up!"
The person behind him dismissed his suggestion. "Stop talking. Now turn around; I'll send you out. No matter how you manage to leave here, just don't come looking for trouble with me again!" Then he shouted to someone behind him, "Big brother, it's fine now; just an intruder!"
There was no echo in response to the person behind Li Nan, while Li Nan obediently kept his hands and feet still and turned around with that person before slowly heading downstairs.
Li Nan wanted to reconcile, so he said, "I have a large truck full of food. If you are willing, I can share it with you. All I ask is to form an alliance with you. There is strength in numbers, and I believe that together we can survive in this apocalypse."
The person behind him laughed mockingly, "You don't look like someone weak, so why are you so cowardly? Say one more word and I'll kill you on the spot!"
Li Nan pleaded for mercy, "Please spare me, I’m just an ordinary citizen. Even if you give me a gun, I wouldn't dare to do anything bad. I only ask for your forgiveness!"
The person behind him chuckled and then scolded Li Nan as if he were a stray dog, "Get out of here! If I see you come back again, I will personally kill you!"
Li Nan's body trembled weakly as he raised his hands in surrender, saying, "There's no need to say more, I understand now. I will not disturb you again!"
The person behind him fell silent, but the sharp object in his hand occasionally poked through Li Nan's clothing and into his flesh. Although Li Nan wasn't very knowledgeable about knives, he could at least distinguish between a blade and a wedge.
So Li Nan walked ahead, a smile appearing on his face, and his words shifted from pleading to suddenly becoming assertive.
Halfway up the stairs, Li Nan suddenly stopped moving. The person behind him felt something was off and shouted, "Why aren't you moving? Do you want to die?"
Li Nan smiled and murmured, "I have a question I'd like to ask you. Can you tell me the answer?"
The man seemed angry and shouted, "You dare to speak? Aren't you afraid I'll kill you?" He then pressed the sharp object against Li Nan's waist.
At that moment when the man exerted force, Li Nan had already reached back and grabbed the weapon directly. He then grinned and said, "Are there any other people in this building?"
The weapon in the man's hand was restricted; he could no longer exert force. In an instant, he was pushed back and fell onto the stairs.
Li Nan smiled widely. "Let me tell you something: the area around the waist is not just any organ; it's where the twelfth rib is located..."
As he turned around, Li Nan discovered that the one lying on the steps was just a child. He wasn't surprised and simply said, "Actually, I could tell what you looked like without turning around. Don't you know that your shadow is reflected on the ground? I knew from the start that you were just a kid!"
The child who had fallen on the steps gritted his teeth, and the Wedge in his hand fell to the side. "If I had known, I wouldn't have wasted my breath with you; it would have been better to just stab you directly!"
Li Nan's eyes caught sight of the Wedge nearby, which was nothing more than a piece of round wood that had been broken, leaving a sharper end. "This kind of thing can't kill anyone, especially not if you stab them in the lower back. Next time you want to kill someone, remember to aim for their throat; that might actually work!"
As he spoke, Li Nan had already revealed a Screwdriver from his sleeve, and there were traces of reddish-brown blood visible near the flowerbed, suggesting he had killed before!
The child lying on the ground faced Li Nan as he approached but did not plead for mercy; instead, he wore an expression of defiance. "Damn it! I didn't get bitten by a Zombie, but I'm going to be killed by a living person? I refuse to accept this! I refuse!"
Li Nan held the Screwdriver in reverse and asked seriously, "Are you the only one in this building? There's no older brother or anything?"
The child stubbornly lifted his head. "There really is no one else; you can go ahead!"
Li Nan closed his eyes, dropped the Screwdriver, and said, "Your acting is too poor. Although you deliberately lowered your voice, it still sounds like a kid who hasn't hit puberty yet. So whether you tried to attract my attention with water stains or shouted to raise my guard, it's not enough to deal with a normal adult! And you know that the world has changed; a child can't survive alone anymore. So you should be prepared for this: living people are scarier than Zombies. Therefore, I'll give you a quick end!"
The child seemed to be used to such situations and did not resist; he simply closed his eyes and waited for death to come!
