Li Dapeng stood up from the bed, feeling a cold sweat on his back. "What has intruded in here?"
Although Li Dapeng was relatively young, his maturity surpassed that of most adults; otherwise, he wouldn't have taken the initiative to set up an alarm system downstairs.
After hurriedly putting on some clothes, Li Dapeng grabbed a wooden stick and darted out of the room, just in time to see Li Nan rushing out in a panic.
The two men exchanged glances, and without saying a word, they hurried down the stairs.
Li Nan led the way, holding a Wolf Eye Flashlight in his left hand and a Fire Axe in his right, while Li Dapeng closely followed behind, wielding a wooden stick as thick as his arm.
"Which direction did the sound come from?" Li Nan asked quietly. Li Dapeng replied, "I didn't hear it clearly before, but it should be coming from the back door of the Small Buildings. I doubt it's a living person!"
Li Dapeng made his judgment, and Li Nan agreed. The two of them held their weapons and rushed downstairs.
In this situation, whether the one who had tinkled the bell was a living person or a Zombie, or even another animal, Li Nan knew they could not let their guard down! In this apocalypse, even a wild dog could take someone's life!
At that moment, Li Nan recalled the group of Zombies that had attacked during the day. "Could it be that they escaped from the warehouse?" He shook his head uncontrollably because he had securely locked the warehouse door; there was no chance for those Zombies to break out!
The bell had only rung once. If it was a Zombie, one single sound didn't seem plausible, so Li Nan felt somewhat relieved. "It must just be some small animal wandering around!"
After reaching the ground floor, Li Nan handed the Wolf Eye Flashlight to Li Dapeng. The two of them then circled around to the back of the building to see what had triggered the bell.
Li Dapeng showed more courage than Li Nan expected; he declined to take the Wolf Eye Flashlight and said, "I know this place better than you do. I could find my way with my eyes closed; there's no need for a flashlight!"
Since Li Dapeng insisted, Li Nan didn't press further and simply carried the flashlight as they walked toward the back of the building.
The rain continued to fall; although it was lighter now, it still carried an icy chill.
Around the small buildings, mugwort grew to half a person's height, but after several days of rain, it lay sprawled on the ground in disarray, seemingly devoid of life.
The mugwort had turned yellow, with some completely submerged in the muddy water, oozing dark yellow sap that resembled golden liquid from a cesspit. A large portion of the mugwort leaned at odd angles, obstructing Li Nan's line of sight.
Li Nan stepped on the obstructing mugwort with his thigh and proceeded along the base of the small buildings, moving cautiously with one foot deep and the other shallow as he made his way toward the back of the building.
Focused solely on the mugwort ahead, Li Nan failed to notice a brick beneath his feet. Suddenly encountering resistance, he leaned forward and nearly collided with the wall.
In an instant, Li Nan thrust the axe in his hand forward, managing to avoid hitting his face against the ground.
He let out a quiet sigh of relief and was about to straighten up when he swept his Wolf Eye Flashlight, revealing a pale face!
Before Li Nan could feel fear, his body reacted instinctively; the Fire Axe swung high as if ready to cleave whatever monster lay before him in half.
"It's me!"
Hearing that voice from the figure illuminated by his flashlight, Li Nan halted and realized that it was Li Dapeng appearing in the beam!
Li Nan chuckled awkwardly, seemingly trying to mask his embarrassment. "I was being overly suspicious; please don't take offense!"
Seeing Li Nan lower his axe, Li Dapeng also relaxed and withdrew the wooden stick he had been holding.
"How did you end up over here? What’s going on over there?" Li Nan asked eagerly. Li Dapeng replied, "There's nothing over there; it seems a rat chewed through the bell's string. I've already reattached it; it was just a false alarm!"
Li Nan wiped the liquid from his forehead, unsure if it was sweat or rain. "That's good! Since everything is fine, let's hurry upstairs!"
Li Dapeng said as he held the Wooden Stick, dragging it through the muddy ground and walking forward.
Li Nan secretly thought it was really embarrassing to have been scared by a twelve-year-old child, and he almost harmed someone; it was truly humiliating.
Li Dapeng maintained a stern expression, showing no emotion as the rain fell on him, not shivering at all.
Li Nan joked ahead, "It seems like there are no Zombies in this area. Did you clear them all out?"
"I just saw a large group of Zombies during the day; how could I not have seen them!"
Li Nan smiled, "That group of Zombies came from the city; I'm talking about the locals!"
Li Dapeng responded with an "oh," then said, "The local population is in that town up ahead, but now the heavy rain has blocked the way, so they can't come over!"
Now Li Nan felt relieved, but suddenly he remembered seeing a place called "Victory Plastic Factory" on the map and asked, "Do you know if there's a plastic factory nearby?"
Li Dapeng nodded, "The plastic factory is in the town ahead, but it has collapsed. A lot of people and Zombies are trapped underneath!"
Li Nan was puzzled, "What do you mean?"
"On the day of the Zombie outbreak, thousands of workers were working in the plastic factory. When a large number of Zombies smelled living humans, they surged in and caused the factory to collapse, burying thousands of bodies underneath!"
Now Li Nan understood why a twelve-year-old like Li Dapeng could survive in a world overrun by Zombies; most of the Zombies in this area were buried under the plastic factory, leaving only a few remaining!
Holding his axe, Li Nan nodded to himself, while Li Dapeng was confused and asked, "Why are you asking about this?"
Li Nan smiled, "I just want to make sure this Small Building is safe enough. If there are no Zombies around, then the safety of this Small Building can be assured!"
Li Dapeng was noncommittal, "Even a mouse can take down an elephant, so I never think this Small Building is safe enough. And even if there are no Zombies, strangers can still break in!"
"Are you talking about me and Mo Xiaohui?" Li Nan pointed at his own nose, smiling lightly, "We mean well; it's just that you refuse to accept it!"
Li Dapeng quickened his pace, suddenly circling in front of Li Nan and leading the way up the stairs.
"I'm not rejecting your goodwill; I don't accept anyone's goodwill. But you're right; it should be quite safe tonight!"
Li Nan shook off the wet clothes on him. Since the incident had happened suddenly, he had just thrown on a random piece of clothing before running out, and it was already soaked.
Li Nan twisted his clothes, which felt like a sponge soaked in water, and muttered, "What was that saying? Only women and children are difficult..." He mocked himself, seemingly indifferent to the unexpected ringing that disturbed his dreams!
Just as Li Dapeng and Li Nan were heading upstairs, the bell rang again downstairs, echoing like waves in the sea, surging forth.
Li Nan sensed something was wrong and quickly stopped Li Dapeng from rushing downstairs. With the Wolf Eye Water Electric Light in hand, he swept it around and discovered that Zombies were gathering from all directions below!
