When Li Nan looked up, he saw Li Dapeng jumping out of the car and immediately smiled wryly, saying, "I knew the heavens wouldn't abandon me!"
Li Dapeng held a Climbing Pick in his hand. After knocking down two Zombies, he grabbed Li Nan by the shoulder and pulled him along forcefully.
Li Nan winced in pain, "I'm fine; it's not to the point where I can't move my legs!"
Grinning through the discomfort, Li Nan strained to get up from the ground. With Li Dapeng's support, he limped toward the truck.
The front of the truck was stained dark by the Black Blood of Zombies, and beneath the wheels lay severed arms and legs, as if a brutal massacre had just taken place! However, these were not what concerned Li Nan; escaping alive was a stroke of luck!
Behind Li Nan, there were still a few Zombies chasing them. Meanwhile, Li Dapeng raised his other arm and swung the Climbing Pick to fend them off, effectively clearing their way.
After stumbling a few steps, Li Nan and Li Dapeng managed to climb into the driver's cabin of the truck. Upon seeing that Li Nan was safe, Mo Xiaohui sitting in the driver's seat immediately shed tears of relief.
Li Nan chuckled, "I’ve snatched back a life; Li Dapeng was right—my luck is surprisingly good!"
Li Dapeng slammed the door shut and said to Mo Xiaohui, "We can go now!"
Mo Xiaohui pressed the accelerator and turned the steering wheel while Li Nan urged, "We can't let those scoundrels get away. Mo Xiaohui, run them over! Ouch..." Li Nan clutched his back in pain.
Mo Xiaohui was also furious. "We have to run them over! If we don't show any anger at all, there's no point in continuing to escape. We need to give them a taste of their own medicine!"
Driving the large truck felt like controlling a Transformer; Mo Xiaohui charged forward recklessly. Whenever she spotted scattered Zombies outside, she would slam on the gas until they were crushed into meat paste. Li Nan watched with delight from inside the truck; at that moment, he seemed to forget about their earlier argument due to his reckless actions. Little did he know that these two had become eerily similar!
Li Dapeng handed his Climbing Pick to Mo Xiaohui and then asked Li Nan, "What should we do next? Kill all those Zombies? Or should we leave here?"
Li Nan held his back and said slowly, "Let's see how it goes. If the situation here allows, we can stay; if not, we really have to leave!"
Li Dapeng's expression was uncertain, and Li Nan wasn't sure what he was thinking, so he asked, "If the situation doesn't look good, will you come with us?"
Li Dapeng neither denied nor confirmed; he simply gazed outside at the drizzling rain and the frenzied Zombies. His eyes were deep as he said lightly, "It seems I have no choice."
Li Nan smiled wryly. Sometimes in life, there truly are no choices. The road is wide open, yet one can only walk the path they find.
Outside, the entire Small Building was surrounded by Zombies, while those that had fallen downstairs were mostly smashed to pieces by the truck.
Using the headlights for illumination, Mo Xiaohui said to Li Nan, "There are still many Zombies inside the building; they haven't come out. Should we..."
Li Nan shook his head. "No, we shouldn't linger with them any longer. We need to leave quickly. There's no point in holding a grudge against these Zombies; our safety is the most important! We can abandon this Small Building!"
Mo Xiaohui understood and turned on the turn signal, reversing out. Meanwhile, a group of dismembered Zombies continued to crawl slowly after them, seemingly relentless in their pursuit of the truck.
Ignoring those limping Zombies, Mo Xiaohui drove the truck toward the main road, but they couldn't proceed further; floodwaters had submerged the street. If they forced their way through, they would likely drown in the rising water.
Li Nan decisively said, "If we can't go forward, we'll backtrack along the route we came from!"
Mo Xiaohui hesitated slightly. "We just escaped from there two days ago. Are we really going back now?"
Li Nan didn't want to explain too much. "Let's prioritize safety first; we can think about everything else later!"
At this moment, there seemed to be no better option than to turn back the way they came, so they could only follow Li Nan's suggestion and head back to the city.
The heavy rain poured down, and the night was dark. Inside the truck, the scenery on both sides of the road was completely obscured, and in the headlights, there was only a desolate waterlogged road and a cold, silent atmosphere that relentlessly eroded the three living beings inside the vehicle.
Li Dapeng twisted his neck, trying to look back at what was behind them, but he couldn't see anything. He could only click his tongue and say, "Just like that, it's gone! Just like that, it's gone!"
Mo Xiaohui drove the truck with a pained expression on her face. They had barely spent a night in their new home; she hadn't even gotten comfortable before having to leave. Most importantly, a whole bunch of food was left behind in the Small Buildings, and now there was nothing left! Mo Xiaohui truly felt a piercing pain in her heart.
Li Nan sat upright in his seat, trying to maintain a forward-leaning posture, but he still felt that something was wrong with him. When he pulled out his hand from behind his back, he was shocked to find a pool of blood!
Li Nan couldn't help but cough lightly a few times, then felt a heaviness in his lungs as if there were signs of internal bleeding.
Noticing something was off with Li Nan, Mo Xiaohui asked him, "Are you okay? Did you get hurt earlier?"
At that moment, the dried blood at the corner of Li Nan's mouth began to seep out dark red strands again.
Mo Xiaohui slammed on the brakes, and due to the sudden inertia, the other two almost hit their foreheads against the windshield.
Li Dapeng snapped back to reality and sensed that Li Nan wasn't doing well. He reached out to pat Li Nan's back but was taken aback when he saw that Li Nan's shirt had already been soaked through with blood!
****************************
The truck stood alone in the middle of the road as large raindrops pounded relentlessly on the roof. The atmosphere inside the vehicle was exceptionally tense.
Mo Xiaohui gently lifted the clothing on Li Nan's back, revealing a deep wound that extended from his left shoulder to his right hip, with flesh torn and blood flowing freely. A section of his spine was even exposed, which was quite horrifying.
Mo Xiaohui asked in confusion, "How did this happen?"
Li Nan forced a smile, saying, "I fell from the second floor and got cut by the rebar inside the floor. It almost split me in half, but luckily I'm tough!"
Mo Xiaohui's face fell in distress. "With such an injury, what are you going to do? You're a doctor; you should know how to handle this. Tell me quickly!"
The car was cramped with three people, making it quite tight. Li Nan awkwardly pulled up his pants and said, "It's not a big deal. Don't you know what my abilities are? In a bit, it'll heal on its own; it's nothing!"
Li Nan frowned. Although he spoke lightly, he wasn't feeling easy himself. After all, enduring such pain from a severe injury isn't something everyone can manage while fully conscious!
"But... but your wound is still bleeding! If we don't treat it soon, even if you don't bleed out, the wound will get infected!"
Listening to their conversation, Li Dapeng seemed to catch a different tone from it, but given the current situation, it wasn't the time for him to delve deeper.
In the back of the car, there was a backpack containing their last supplies and next to it sat a birdcage. Even while fleeing for their lives, Mo Xiaohui hadn't forgotten about the parrot named Hui Xiaomo!
The parrot stared wide-eyed at everything happening in the car but understood the atmosphere well enough to stay silent in the corner of its cage.
Mo Xiaohui rummaged through the backpack and pulled out a small bundle filled with various bottles and jars that had been scavenged from Jiangbei Hospital.
After searching through them, she found several bottles of hemostatic medicine for both internal and external use. She hurriedly applied them to Li Nan's wound and carefully began to bandage it. However, due to the large area of the wound, Mo Xiaohui found it quite challenging to manage.
Li Nan wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth and said softly, "It's already enough. Now I can only pray that my self-healing ability kicks in soon; otherwise, if I have to take out my internal organs again, I might as well be a mummy!"
Mo Xiaohui wiped the sweat from his forehead and pleaded to the sky, "Pray that Li Nan is fine, pray that Li Nan is fine..."
Suddenly, the noisy sound of rain on the car roof gradually stopped, and the dark sky began to brighten. At that moment, Li Dapeng shouted, "It's dawn, and the rain has stopped!"
Li Nan and Mo Xiaohui both leaned out to look outside. Indeed, in the gradually clearer world, they saw a sun slowly rising, lazily emitting a soft yellow light that quietly illuminated the mountains and rivers. At that moment, Li Nan had a fleeting illusion: had the world returned to normal?
Mo Xiaohui looked through the mottled windshield at Jiangbei City. After being soaked by the heavy rain, it seemed to exude a faint tranquility, as if this city she was familiar with had never experienced any strange changes at all!
Li Dapeng stared at the two people in the car who seemed a bit dazed and asked in confusion, "What should we do now? Stay put or continue wandering?"
At this moment, Li Nan lightly coughed and said, "For now, we need to rest. We've been busy all night. Fortunately, the rain has cleared up. You two should take a nap while I keep watch!"
Mo Xiaohui said with concern, "No way! Your back wound hasn't healed; how can you keep watch?"
Li Nan smiled bitterly and replied, "Precisely because my wound isn't healed that I don't need to sleep!" He then pointed to his back and grimaced.
