In the back of the truck, there was nothing but empty space, and Li Nan and Mo Xiaohui struggled to lift the Diesel Generator they had brought from the construction site, finally able to catch their breath.
In fact, there were plenty of usable items at the construction site, so Li Nan did not intend to stop there.
Li Dapeng had obtained a new weapon and was playing with it in his hands, while Li Nan called out, "Let's go back and get some more stuff!"
Mo Xiaohui wanted to follow them but was stopped by Li Nan. "Isn't there still some rice left in your Backpack? You can make do for now and cook something." He then pulled out a Climbing Pick from his waist and handed it to her. "If anything happens, shout loudly. Don't try to be brave!"
Mo Xiaohui nodded, and Li Nan ran back to the construction site with Li Dapeng.
The construction site was surrounded by a circle of glued plastic boards to prevent outsiders from entering, but this measure was ineffective. Leading Li Dapeng, Li Nan circled around to the shady side of the site and saw a simple shelter supported by a frame, inside which a considerable amount of Rebar was piled up.
Li Dapeng asked in confusion, "We’re not building a house; what do we need this Rebar for?"
Li Nan smiled, "It will definitely be useful!"
Bending down, Li Nan picked up a five or six-meter-long Rebar and weighed it in his hands, both ends trembling slightly.
"This is HRB500 threaded steel, 6000 millimeters long and 25 millimeters in diameter. It's quite heavy!"
Li Dapeng also tried to lift a piece of Rebar but found it very difficult. Li Nan chuckled, "Right now we don't have any suitable weapons. I'm wondering if this Rebar can be used."
Li Dapeng shook his head. "The thickness is fine, but it's too long; I’m afraid it won’t work!"
Li Nan acknowledged the issue. "Maybe we can bend this thing!"
Li Dapeng exclaimed, "How is that possible? This Rebar is as thick as my thumb!"
Li Nan exerted his arms, aiming at one-third of the Rebar's length. With both thumbs pressing down firmly, the Rebar held for a second before it weakly bowed its head.
Li Dapeng was already astonished to see the muscles bulging on Li Nan's arms, while Li Nan himself seemed unfazed. He continued to bend the rebar at the break point, and after just a few rounds, the rebar snapped with a "crack" and fell to the ground.
"Although this stuff has considerable strength, it doesn't withstand bending!" Li Nan explained to himself. He then applied more force to the piece of rebar that had fallen, and within three minutes, three straight pieces of rebar, each about two meters long, appeared in Li Nan's hands.
Li Nan weighed them in his hands and found them manageable. He then said to Li Dapeng, "Let's keep looking around to see if there are any useful things!"
In one corner of the construction site stood a model 40 excavator, which had a lifting capacity of about four tons. Upon seeing the large machine, Li Nan shook his head. "This thing seems to have no practical use besides its size. Besides, I didn't graduate from Blue Sky Technical School; I probably can't handle this big guy!"
The two approached the excavator directly. Aside from finding a half-full bottle of mineral water in the cabin, they discovered nothing else.
After searching for a while, Li Nan finally located the fuel tank of the excavator and found an oil drum and a soft rubber hose nearby. It took considerable effort for him to siphon out the fuel inside!
Logically speaking, excavators should consume fuel similarly to other small vehicles, so Li Nan hoped this barrel of fuel would help them travel further.
Li Dapeng was also quite interested in the excavator. If possible, he would love to dismantle it entirely; however, that possibility was zero. While Li Nan could siphon fuel, he couldn't take apart vehicles!
The construction site was for a Mechanical Assembly Plant that had already completed its main structure. In the end, Li Nan and Li Dapeng walked into the factory interior and found mostly scattered construction debris with nothing useful!
Finally, they emerged carrying an oil drum and three cut pieces of rebar. As they stepped out, Li Dapeng suddenly felt something hit his head—a stone that had fallen from the roof.
Li Dapeng covered his head and looked up, only to find nothing on the roof. However, at his feet lay a palm-sized concrete block with bloodstains on it.
Feeling pain on his face, Li Dapeng immediately shouted, "Did someone hit me?"
Li Nan picked up the bloodied concrete block and glanced at Li Dapeng's head. It looked like he had been hit hard but should be fine.
After checking him over, Li Nan said, "It's just an accident; stones or concrete blocks falling from roofs are quite common. Besides, there's no one here at all; even the zombies have been wiped out!"
Li Dapeng stubbornly raised his head and said, "I just heard footsteps above. Someone must have done this on purpose!"
Li Nan smiled, "How could that be?"
Li Dapeng circled around and noticed many scaffolds beside the main structure, so he climbed up immediately.
Li Nan weighed the Concrete Block in his hand; the break had fresh marks, indicating it had just fallen. On the side stained with blood, there seemed to be... a faint shoe print!
Li Nan silently cursed, "There really is someone up there!"
Seeing that Li Dapeng had already climbed up the scaffold, Li Nan felt anxious. If there really was someone up there who posed a threat to them, then what Li Dapeng was doing was extremely dangerous.
Li Nan set down the Oil Drum and Rebar in his hands and followed him up.
"Li Dapeng, stop right there!" Li Nan shouted from behind, but Li Dapeng casually replied, "Someone just hit me; there must be someone up there!"
Li Nan inwardly lamented, "This kid is really stubborn!"
Using both hands and feet, Li Dapeng had already climbed five or six meters high. Then he jumped directly onto the main structure.
Since this project was a frame-structured factory and the roof had already been completed, the surface above was quite flat, though exposed Rebar sections occasionally showed through.
As soon as Li Dapeng poked his head out, he sensed that something was off about the atmosphere up there; it seemed... there was a smell of rotting flesh!
A bad premonition arose in Li Dapeng's heart, and he immediately wanted to retract his body. However, Li Nan also climbed up behind him and said, "There might be danger up there; why are you in such a hurry?"
Then Li Nan also sensed that something was wrong above and told Li Dapeng, "Move behind me and make sure nothing goes wrong!"
Following the scent, Li Nan walked ahead and, after circling around a pillar, discovered a fallen corpse among a pile of rebar, oozing black blood. It seemed that the person had long since turned into a zombie.
The entire head of the zombie was pierced by several pieces of rebar, indicating that someone had killed it, which confirmed that there must be someone else on the roof.
Li Dapeng crouched down and noticed that the zombie was wearing an orange worker's uniform, which had been soaked and tattered by the rain.
Li Dapeng caught a whiff of a nauseating smell reminiscent of rotten salted fish and shook his head, saying, "It's not this; that smell isn't coming from the zombie. It should be from a corpse!"
Li Nan cautiously scanned the surroundings. Without a weapon in hand, he didn't dare to rely solely on brute strength. It was now certain that there was at least one living person and one corpse on the roof.
Li Dapeng pulled out two binding hooks from his sleeve and held them horizontally in his palm. Li Nan advised him, "Don't expose yourself; make sure to stay behind me. Although zombies are terrifying, living people are even more dangerous!"
Li Dapeng remained silent but his eyes were alert.
Following the scent's guidance, Li Nan slowly moved forward. Behind another pillar, he spotted a pair of human feet with darkened skin.
As he shifted his gaze, a complete female corpse came into view for both Li Nan and Li Dapeng.
The woman appeared to be quite young; although her skin showed signs of decay, her figure suggested she was an attractive woman. Li Nan began to wonder, "How could there be such a young woman on a construction site?"
Work on construction sites is generally dirty and exhausting, with harsh conditions and significant dangers. Therefore, it is mostly older men who work there; even young men born in the 1990s are rare. How could there be a young woman?
Li Nan approached closer and noticed that the female corpse was covered with a man's suit jacket, concealing her body from the knees up to below her chest.
This scene further puzzled Li Nan, as there were no visible injuries on the woman's body; it was impossible to determine any fatal wounds!
Having studied medicine, Li Nan might not be a forensic expert, but he could tell that this corpse had been dead for at least three days based on the livor mortis visible on her face and neck.
Li Dapeng smelled the stench of decay for the first time, and he felt a wave of nausea wash over him, almost making him vomit. Unfortunately, after not eating for more than ten hours, there was nothing in his stomach, and he could only spit out a pool of bitter bile.
Li Nan signaled Li Dapeng to stay calm. He moved closer and was about to lift the clothing covering the female corpse when suddenly a mournful voice sounded from nearby!
Li Nan was startled and quickly stepped back, not expecting that a living person was slowly crawling out from his blind spot, mumbling, "Please don't hurt my daughter!"
Li Nan turned his gaze and saw a middle-aged man soaked through, half-sitting on the ground with an extremely sorrowful expression. He was wearing a pair of Branded Leather Shoes, which matched the marks left on the Concrete Block earlier.
Li Nan exclaimed in shock, "It's you! Were you observing us just now?"
The man sitting on the ground suddenly pleaded, trembling all over as he said, "I'm a good person. Please let me go. If you give me a chance to live, I will give you one hundred thousand... I will give you all my possessions!"
Behind Li Nan, Li Dapeng brandished two shiny iron hooks, filled with anger. The middle-aged man became even more terrified and said, "Little brother, big brother, oh no! You two gentlemen, I haven't done anything on this rooftop. Please don't kill me!"
Li Nan showed a cold expression. "Why do you think we would kill you?"
The middle-aged man replied pitifully, "No... it's not that. Earlier I saw you kill so many people downstairs; I thought you would..."
Li Nan turned his head away and looked at the Zombie corpse behind him. "You call that thing a human?"
