The middle-aged man had a bald head, and although he was half-sitting on the ground, he could not hide his large belly. It was clear that someone with such an appearance was either a high-ranking official or a wealthy tycoon.
Li Nan was not interested in the man before him. Although there were many doubts about the scene above the roof, he did not want to dwell on them.
When the middle-aged man saw Li Nan's sharp gaze, he realized he had misspoken and quickly corrected himself, saying, "Those things are definitely not human; they have already turned into monsters! You may not understand why I am on this roof; I am actually very innocent!"
Li Dapeng was also unfriendly towards this man. Given his previous humble status, he certainly harbored no goodwill towards someone so rotund.
"Who cares about your story!" Li Dapeng shot back, seemingly waiting for Li Nan's cue.
Li Nan glanced at the female corpse on the ground and thought it would be better to ask him some questions. "Before you talk about your innocence, is there only you up here on this roof?"
Li Nan did not trust this man and signaled for Li Dapeng to check around in his line of sight.
Li Nan kept one eye on the half-sitting man while watching Li Dapeng's movements.
"There is only me up here; there were originally two others, but now my daughter is dead!" The middle-aged man said with a hint of sorrow.
A minute later, Li Dapeng leaned in and confirmed, "There really is no one else!"
At this point, Li Nan felt somewhat reassured and then asked the middle-aged man, "What is your name? Is this female corpse your daughter? I don't see much resemblance between you two!"
A glimmer of cunning appeared in the middle-aged man's eyes but was quickly concealed. He then spoke tearfully, "That girl is indeed my daughter; her name is Reiko, and I am Lei Dafu, the client of this mechanical assembly factory under construction. Seven Days ago, I came to check on the progress of the project when suddenly chaos erupted at the site, trapping us here. My daughter had a break from university and whimsically wanted to come see the site with me; thus, we both encountered this disaster!"
Li Nan observed Lei Dafu's expression and felt he did not seem to be lying. However, he instinctively distrusted this man, suspecting he was likely a high-ranking official at the mechanical assembly factory. He had seen enough instances of ruthless businessmen to be wary of this fat guy.
"During Seven Days, you and your daughter stayed on this roof. Did you not try to escape? Also, how did your daughter die?" Li Nan continued to question.
Upon hearing this, Lei Dafu broke down in tears. "The workers below all transformed into monsters, looking like they were going to eat us. One of my assistants who was with me was bitten to death by them and turned into one of those things. We were terrified and dared not go down. Fortunately, those things couldn't climb up here, so my daughter and I were temporarily safe. But good times didn't last long; on the third day, a monstrous worker climbed up. My daughter and I fought desperately against him because we didn't want to die. In the end, that worker's head got stuck at the rebar cross-section like a candied hawthorn stick, but my daughter suffered an injury to her abdomen and slowly lost her breath!"
Lei Dafu was filled with grief and anger, seemingly harboring an unending hatred for the approaching Zombie.
Li Nan asked again, "Seven Days, how did you get over to the rooftop? You don't look like you've lost any weight!"
Lei Dafu's expression froze for a moment, then he awkwardly replied, "It's been raining for the past few days, and I've been drinking rainwater. Don't you see I haven't lost weight? I used to weigh over three hundred pounds!"
Li Dapeng laughed, "Fatty is doing well; Seven Days can go without food and still be fine!"
Lei Dafu forced a bitter smile and said, "This young brother is right. As long as you two help me get out of here, I'll give you all my possessions. I'm begging you!"
Li Nan replied calmly, "Do you think those Zombies only appear at your construction site?"
Lei Dafu's expression shifted uncertainly, seemingly not understanding what he meant. Li Dapeng continued, "The world has changed; outside are those things. So your money and property are worth nothing now!"
Lei Dafu's facial muscles twitched at this revelation, a reaction he hadn't shown even when he mentioned his daughter's death.
Li Nan smiled, "It seems that in your heart, your possessions are more important than your daughter!"
After hesitating for half a second, Lei Dafu muttered in a daze, "It's the end of the world; it's the end of the world. What does it matter if I live anymore?"
As he spoke, Lei Dafu seemed to lose his mind and charged toward a nearby Concrete Pillar.
In response to this situation, Li Nan did not intervene but simply closed his eyes, unwilling to witness such a bloody scene. However, Li Dapeng was very emotional and tried to stop Lei Dafu.
Surprisingly, Li Dapeng, a twelve-year-old boy weighing less than seventy pounds, managed to hold back a man who weighed over two hundred pounds.
Thanks to Li Dapeng's intervention, Lei Dafu's head merely brushed against the Concrete Pillar, resulting in a slight bump without even a drop of blood.
Lei Dafu turned back to look at Li Dapeng with a defeated expression and said, "Little brother, let me die! There's no meaning in living anymore!"
At this moment, Li Dapeng could no longer remember that his head had been smashed by this person. Instead, he advised, "If you want to die, that's your business, but don't die in front of me. Stay away and go die somewhere else!"
This statement left Lei Dafu speechless. After failing to crash into the pillar, he said with a sigh, "Since I can't die, then I won't. Little brother, you saved me from the gates of hell!"
Li Dapeng didn't take it to heart and immediately returned to Li Nan's side, then asked, "Why were you spying on us just now?"
Lei Dafu replied, "I heard some noise downstairs and got up to check. I happened to see you killing those things. I was scared, so I kept quiet and planned to escape after you left. I didn't expect that just as I was about to climb down the scaffolding, you two came back. But now I realize my thoughts were unnecessary; I should have just come down because you are all good people!"
Li Nan was taken aback. "Who said we are good people? We are not good people!"
Lei Dafu laughed and said, "You can't fool me; I can tell what kind of people you are at a glance. You are indeed good people!"
Li Nan didn't want to dwell on this issue any longer and said, "We know about your situation and don't want to get entangled further. After we go down, you can do as you please."
Lei Dafu quickly changed his tune: "Wait! Since you say the outside world is completely filled with those things, look at me—a middle-aged man with a big belly—what chance do I have of surviving? So please take me with you. I saw that there is a woman among you; it seems you have a kind heart. If you can accept a woman, why can't you accept me?"
Li Nan smiled wryly and said, "You're thinking too much. I did intend to kill you before, but then I changed my mind. And now you're saying this—aren't you afraid I'll change my mind again?"
Lei Dafu fell silent. "Forget what I just said. But I've gone seven days without food; can you give me something to eat? I'm really begging you!"
Li Nan had always felt indifferent towards unscrupulous merchants who exploited the common people and manipulated the market. Now that he understood the situation, he no longer wanted to deal with this old man and immediately told Li Dapeng, "Let's go!"
Lei Dafu looked at Li Dapeng with longing eyes filled with despair. The twelve-year-old child tugged at Li Nan's sleeve and said, "Maybe we can give him some food; after all, he looks so pitiful!"
Indeed, children and women are the easiest to move. Since Li Dapeng had already spoken up, he had no reason to dismiss his new companion's request. He could only turn to Lei Dafu and say, "Fine! But don't take advantage of us; after eating, get lost immediately!"
Lei Dafu nodded excitedly, and from his position on the rooftop, he could see Li Nan's large truck.
Just as Lei Dafu was about to climb down with Li Nan and the others, Li Nan shouted, "Aren't you going to deal with your daughter's corpse first? It seems you don't really care much for her!"
Lei Dafu's expression changed, and he sighed, "You have no idea. My heart is heavy. I secretly tested the DNA between my daughter and me, and to my surprise, my wife really did cheat on me. She isn't my daughter at all. Although I have some distance from her, Ke'er has always regarded me as her real father, so I am suffering!"
Upon hearing this, Li Nan burst into laughter, "I didn't expect your life to be so colorful. But congratulations, you finally found out she isn't your biological daughter. Still, a father-daughter bond should end on good terms, right?"
Lei Dafu nodded in agreement and immediately picked up his daughter who was lying on the ground, then took off his suit jacket and put it on himself.
Li Nan turned back and noticed that Lei Dafu's daughter was wearing a very short professional skirt, which could hardly be called anything less than a mini skirt, and there were several bruises on her thighs!
Li Nan shook his head slightly; although he felt something was off, he couldn't pinpoint any obvious issues. He thought to himself, "Maybe I'm overthinking it. Although businessmen aren't exactly the best people, not everyone is like that cannibal in the apartment building!"
Shaking his head, Li Nan climbed down while Lei Dafu, with the help of Li Dapeng, managed to get his daughter down as well.
The construction site was full of pits and holes, and Lei Dafu symbolically chose a depression to place his daughter's body inside, covering it with a few handfuls of dirt to finish the task.
At that moment, Li Nan realized that Lei Dafu's daughter was indeed quite beautiful—long legs and a big chest. Although her face was no longer recognizable, he imagined it wouldn't be too bad.
Li Nan questioned suspiciously, "With such a sexy non-biological daughter, what father could handle it?"
