Li Nan held a Rebar Javelin and walked ahead, while Lei Dafu staggered behind, seemingly struggling greatly.
Li Nan turned back to glance at Lei Dafu and asked, "Are you sure about the location of that shadow on the construction site?"
Lei Dafu replied with certainty, "It's near the shear wall over there; I saw that shadow run in that direction!"
Li Nan slowed his pace, holding the long rebar with both hands and clenching the Wolf Eye Flashlight in his mouth as he cautiously approached. Lei Dafu followed closely behind; although his legs were not very agile, he managed to keep up with Li Nan's thoughts.
As Li Nan focused intently, a sudden heavy sound came from behind him. Turning around, he saw that Lei Dafu had fallen flat on the ground.
Lei Dafu looked embarrassed and quickly said in a low voice, "I tripped and fell; I'm really sorry!"
Li Nan did not pay much attention to Lei Dafu. At this moment, the figure in white had likely already vanished, so he was not concerned about alarming anyone. Li Nan only wanted to find some clues left by that person to indirectly determine what they were up to.
Seeing Li Nan turn back around, Lei Dafu gestured towards the ground and managed to grab a sizable object into his sleeve.
With a grunt, Lei Dafu used his hands for support and barely got back on his feet. Li Nan was not inclined to assist the older man, so he let him be.
Li Nan shone the Wolf Eye Flashlight on the ground and noticed that the debris nearby was quite damp. It seemed that a day's sunlight had not completely evaporated the moisture they had absorbed. The wet building materials could not bear weight well, so stepping on them left noticeable imprints.
However, under Li Nan's observation, there were no footprints to be found in the vicinity.
"What is going on?" Li Nan began to doubt and suddenly turned back to question Lei Dafu. The guy was pressed against a wall, hoarsely shouting, "Help! Help me!"
Li Nan was taken aback; how could something like this happen when he wasn't paying attention? Suddenly, a surge of anger rose within him. "How dare you kill someone right in front of me? That's a bit too arrogant!"
Li Nan swung the long rebar in his hand without thinking much and threw it. It struck the wall beside Lei Dafu's ear, embedding itself more than twenty centimeters deep.
Following closely behind, Li Nan rushed over. Due to the swaying light of the Wolf Eye Flashlight, he could not clearly see what was happening ahead but sensed a figure hiding behind the wall, gripping Lei Dafu's neck.
After the long rebar was thrown, the person across showed no reaction, while Lei Dafu flailed his arms and legs against the wall behind him, his breath growing weaker.
In order to save Lei Dafu, Li Nan threw caution to the wind, disregarding his own defense as he lunged forward, intending to engage in hand-to-hand combat. However, just as he reached Lei Dafu, he sensed something was off; there was nothing on Lei Dafu's neck, not even a fingerprint.
Li Nan was astonished, and due to his momentum, he brushed past Lei Dafu. At that moment, the Wolf Eye Flashlight in his mouth illuminated clearly, revealing that there was nothing behind Lei Dafu except for a wall.
"Not good!" Li Nan thought to himself; this time he had truly stumbled into a trap with no chance of escape.
Just then, a sly smile appeared at the corner of Lei Dafu's mouth. In an instant, a fist-sized stone flew out from his right sleeve, aimed directly at Li Nan's head.
Li Nan had no time to dodge; he felt a thud at his temple and everything in his head turned to mush.
Li Nan fell to the ground with a thud, blood oozing from the corner of his mouth. The area around his left temple had already become a bloody mess, dark red staining half of his head.
Lei Dafu laughed and said, "Damn it, I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time!"
Li Nan lay on the ground, blood covering his eyes so he could see nothing. His brain had suffered severe damage, rendering his limbs completely unresponsive.
"Why? Why do you want to kill me?" Li Nan instinctively blurted out a few words but ultimately could not understand why this seemingly clumsy middle-aged man would resort to such brutality.
Lei Dafu sneered, "Isn't it obvious? If I don't kill you, how can I get that truck? If I don't kill you, how can I take what's on that truck? And that delicate woman—if I don't kill you, how can I possess her?"
Li Nan was filled with rage. "You beast! Don't forget we saved you! Do you treat your previous words as mere nonsense?"
At this point, Lei Dafu's mocking laughter grew louder. "Are you a kindergarten graduate? You take nonsense seriously; it's no wonder you're going to die!"
With a bloody stone in his right hand, Lei Dafu lunged forward. Li Nan calmly replied, "So that means the shadow you saw at night was also fake?"
"Of course, aside from my name being real, the rest of the story is fake. Otherwise, how could I have lured you here at this late hour!"
Li Nan, feeling extremely fatigued, closed his eyes and said, "So that woman on the roof isn't your daughter? No wonder I felt strange; which daughter would dress so provocatively in front of her father?"
Lei Dafu smiled, "You guessed wrong there. She is my goddaughter, but it's not for free; I pay for it. However, that little girl on the roof is quite unruly. If I hadn't had some chocolate hidden on me, I wouldn't have been able to last seven days. That little girl usually eats and drinks my stuff, and at times like that, she even tries to snatch my chocolate away. So I just killed her—nice and clean!"
Li Nan, lying on the ground, felt a tightness in his throat and immediately spat out a mouthful of blood. He then coughed and said, "You'd kill someone over a few pieces of chocolate? And it's your own bedfellow too? You're really something! Impressive!"
Lei Dafu was unfazed. "To survive, I wouldn't hesitate to kill even one person—I'd do it for my wife and children too! The world has changed; if people don't change with it, they deserve to die!"
Lei Dafu moved closer to Li Nan, raising a stone in his hand, intending to end Li Nan's life in one blow. But suddenly he realized the stone was a bit small, so he bent down and picked up a large rock weighing around thirty pounds. He then angrily said, "After you become a ghost, remember to come find me for revenge!"
Just as Lei Dafu aimed the stone at the back of Li Nan's head, Li Nan suddenly jerked his head and bumped into Lei Dafu's left leg. With an injury at his knee, Lei Dafu lost his balance and wobbled.
Seeing an opportunity, Li Nan immediately rolled to the side while Lei Dafu's stone fell to the ground with a thud.
In that instant, Li Nan flipped the Wolf Eye Flashlight upside down and used his tongue to press the switch hard; the flashlight instantly lost its light.
After barely maintaining his stance, Lei Dafu suddenly found himself surrounded by darkness and could no longer see Li Nan's shadow.
"Where did that guy go?" Lei Dafu pondered as he could only slowly feel around at his feet but found nothing.
Lei Dafu's movements were quite inconvenient in this environment, putting him at a disadvantage.
While searching for Li Nan, he laughed and said, "Although I'm not a doctor, hitting you on the temple would tell me you're seriously injured. Why don't you just come out? I'll give you a quick end."
Then Lei Dafu continued, "Actually, falling on the road was just my ploy to make sure I stayed behind so I could eliminate you. By the way, let me tell you something else: I'm not just a businessman; before going into business, I was an actor in the provincial drama troupe!"
After a long monologue, Lei Dafu immediately held his breath, trying to discern Li Nan's location through his voice. However, Li Nan seemed indifferent to his words and did not respond at all.
Clearly, Lei Dafu had a better grasp of human nature and emotions. After not hearing any echo from Li Nan, he began to laugh to himself, "Good! You can just stay here like a turtle hiding its head. I'm leaving now; there’s a woman and a child in the camp. I’ll go over and tell them you were attacked and have died. Those two will surely weep bitterly, and then I’ll mimic their cries, and they will die in my hands! Oh no! I need to keep that woman alive. Do you know how I spent the first few days with my goddaughter on the rooftop? I stripped her bare, letting the raindrops hit her breasts and private parts, then I pressed down on her in rhythm with the rain, releasing my pent-up frustration by tormenting her. Even after she turned into a corpse, I continued my madness. Do you want to see your woman lying beneath me like that?"
Still not hearing any response from Li Nan, Lei Dafu cursed under his breath, "What a fucking coward!" He staggered out, just as a flashlight suddenly illuminated the area, shining directly into Lei Dafu's eyes.
Lei Dafu's eyes were suddenly blinded by the light, causing his pupils to constrict and creating a brief blind spot in his vision.
"What’s happening?" Lei Dafu felt panic as he realized he couldn't see anything. Amidst the rolling sounds, Li Nan had already rolled to Lei Dafu's feet and bit down hard, tearing away a mouthful of bloody flesh.
With his vision impaired and pain shooting up from his foot, Lei Dafu panicked and leaned back. His left knee gave way, causing him to fall to the ground. Seeing an opportunity, Li Nan disregarded any muscle or tendon in his ankle and rolled next to Lei Dafu's head, targeting the carotid artery. He bit down hard, instantly spraying blood like a fountain!
With tremendous force, Li Nan collided with Lei Dafu's face. However, Li Nan didn’t waste time talking; he was determined to eliminate the threat. A few bites later, he had already gnawed away at the flesh around Lei Dafu's neck and then spat out what seemed to be a piece of vertebra stuck between his teeth.
Li Nan thought to himself: "All day long with this bullshit! If you're going to kill someone, do it quickly! What a coward! Don’t think you’re an actor; even if Donnie Yen were here, he’d still be taken down!"
Li Nan felt bitterness in his mouth as his head buzzed. He collapsed onto Lei Dafu's already cold corpse and lost consciousness.
