Li Nan exclaimed in surprise, "Jiangbei City First Prison!"
Mo Xiaohui nodded, "It must be Jiangbei City First Prison. That prison is located in the city, and because it's in the urban area, its security measures are very good. If there's a place that can survive the tide of Zombie attacks, it has to be Jiangbei City First Prison!"
At that moment, Li Nan's expression suddenly brightened. He jumped out of the car and said to Mo Xiaohui, "Since we know the location of the Safe Zone, what are we waiting for? We need to hurry over there; as long as we can get there, our chances of survival will be much greater!"
However, Mo Xiaohui poured cold water on Li Nan's enthusiasm. "Jiangbei Prison is in the south, while we're currently in the north. If we want to get there, we have to cross Jiangbei City, which is swarming with Zombies. Can we really make it through?"
This made Li Nan fall into deep thought again. Mo Xiaohui's words were completely reasonable. Although they had seen hope now, there were undoubtedly countless obstacles before that hope—obstacles that seemed insurmountable!
Li Nan sat back down on the ground, facing the blazing sun overhead. He sighed and said, "Damn it! Why is it so hard to live safely?"
At that moment, Li Dapeng approached Li Nan and said slowly, "I started wandering when I was very young; life is much harder than we imagine!"
Li Nan looked up at the youthful face of Li Dapeng. The words just spoken came from this young boy's mouth!
"I want to know how you've survived these past few years," Li Nan turned his gaze to Li Dapeng, seemingly regarding this twelve-year-old child as a brother walking ahead of him in life.
Li Dapeng fiddled with a slingshot he had just finished making and casually replied, "I don't really know. It feels like these years of wandering have passed in the blink of an eye—from my parents' death to my grandfather's death, to everyone abandoning me. Now I just feel like time has flown by; I went from eight years old to twelve years old in an instant, and I can't really remember much of what happened in between!"
Li Nan patted Li Dapeng on the shoulder with a hint of a smile and said, "You're right; no matter how great the hardships are, they will eventually fade away. This journey through the apocalypse may not be the end of our lives!"
Li Dapeng didn't quite understand Li Nan's words and simply asked, "So what should we do next?"
Li Nan stood up from the road, brushed off the dust from his pants, and said to Li Dapeng, "We just received a radio transmission saying there's a Safe Zone in Jiangbei City. However, we're quite far from it and need to cross through a sea of Zombies in Jiangbei City. I always thought that was impossible. Until now, our strategy has been to avoid Zombies and seek a paradise. But in this apocalypse, where could such a paradise exist? Now I've realized that some things cannot be avoided; we must confront those Zombies—not just for the sake of finding a so-called Safe Zone! Human cities have been occupied by Zombies; human resources have also been taken over by them. We must reclaim what belongs to us! True warriors dare to face a bleak life and confront bloodshed head-on!"
Li Dapeng was confused by Li Nan's words and could only ask dumbfoundedly, "What does that mean?"
Li Nan smiled and said, "In short, we need to head towards the city!"
At this moment, Li Dapeng also chuckled in disbelief. "If something can be explained in one sentence, why drag it out with so many words and make it all confusing?"
Li Nan scratched his head and said, "I was just inspired earlier and wanted to show off my speaking skills; I didn't expect you all to find it unhelpful!"
Mo Xiaohui had also heard Li Nan's earlier statement and came over with a smile on her face. "You finally figured it out! Otherwise, I would have thought you were losing your mind!"
Li Nan smiled wryly. In essence, he was a carefree optimist, the kind of person who believed that if one person was full, the whole family wouldn’t go hungry. However, ever since he met Mo Xiaohui and Li Dapeng, the burden on his shoulders had grown heavier. He was no longer just one person; he had to consider issues that affected more than himself. Li Nan had clearly become the leader of this trio. Although his role didn’t have much practical use, he had to think about their future safety and food supply. He felt like a weary father striving to provide for his family, wanting to relax but unable to do so because of his responsibilities.
Because of the immense pressure on his shoulders, he couldn’t afford to let anything slip.
Li Nan waved his hand, signaling Mo Xiaohui to stop bringing up the matter. Now, he began to fully acknowledge himself and the small team he was part of.
After coming to terms with everything, the weight in Li Nan's heart suddenly lifted. Although he didn’t know how dire the situation in the city had become or whether the so-called Safe Zone was truly safe, at least their goal was clear: they needed to survive in this apocalypse. They could not avoid Zombies; they had to face them head-on and reclaim food and territory from them.
Unbeknownst to them, the sun hung low in the sky, and the crimson sunlight began to soften.
Li Nan had Mo Xiaohui check their supplies again. A few minutes later, Mo Xiaohui reported back, “We still have three bags of rice, which amounts to six pounds left, a set of utensils, several polyester jackets, a few small tools, and a bag of salt. The backpack is almost full!”
Li Nan nodded. “And we have this large truck, a Diesel Generator, a fifty-pound Oil Drum, and several self-defense tools. I think that should be enough for us for a few days!”
Mo Xiaohui agreed. “Since you’ve made your decision, when are we leaving?”
“Don’t rush!” Li Nan said softly. “Let’s wait a bit longer; without thorough preparations, we shouldn’t take any risks!”
At that moment, Li Dapeng approached with two pine cones in hand and said cheerfully, “Look what I found! We can have an extra meal tonight!”
As night fell, the three gathered around the campfire, skewering two Squirrels over the dancing flames, gradually releasing a delicious aroma!
Li Nan placed a hard stone beside him and watched as Mo Xiaohui and Li Dapeng enjoyed themselves; he couldn’t help but feel happy too.
Mo Xiaohui asked Li Nan, “What are you doing? You’ve been grinding that stone for almost an afternoon!”
Li Nan held a Rebar in both hands and rubbed it against the hard stone beneath him, occasionally sending sparks flying!
Li Dapeng held a Wedge in his hand with a golden-brown Squirrel skewered on it; it looked delicious.
Tentatively, Li Dapeng tore off a piece of meat and tasted it before saying, “It’s cooked; we can eat now!”
Li Nan continued sharpening the Rebar and said, “The city is extremely dangerous. I need to sharpen this Rebar’s tip to make a proper Spear!”
Mo Xiaohui had also roasted the Squirrel in her hand and immediately delivered it to Li Nan's table, saying, "Try it, it tastes good!"
Li Nan waved his hand, "The river delicacies from this morning and the Squirrel from tonight were all prepared by Li Dapeng alone. I feel embarrassed to eat more; you two can have it!"
Mo Xiaohui smiled, "You big man, why are you being shy at this time? You're acting more like a woman than I am!"
Li Nan chuckled, "I'm not a woman; I'm a big man, so you should eat it!"
Seeing Li Nan's stubbornness, Mo Xiaohui became a bit annoyed. After spending some time living together, she understood that Li Nan was a typical Northerner. He was usually fine, but once he got stubborn, not even eight oxen could pull him back!
Holding the hot Wedge carefully, Mo Xiaohui split the Squirrel meat in half and tossed a portion to Li Nan, saying, "Don't say I forgot about you!"
A smile appeared on Li Nan's face, "Alright then!"
After sharing the two Squirrels, Li Dapeng also moved closer to Li Nan to help sharpen the tip of the Rebar.
The night was cool, and the firelight gradually dimmed. However, a few sparks occasionally flew from the grinding stones!
