Li Nan observed everything in the culvert, his brow furrowing involuntarily, while behind him, Li Dapeng approached.
Since entering the city and getting entangled with the spiders, too much time had already passed, and in the blink of an eye, the sun was beginning to set.
Li Dapeng entered the culvert to call for Li Nan because it would soon be dark, and their truck had been destroyed. They needed to find a place to stay for the night.
Li Nan understood Li Dapeng's intention and immediately turned to leave the culvert. He picked up a scattered Rebar Javelin and slung it over his shoulder, while Mo Xiaohui and the others had already packed up most of their things.
Everything had been left in the truck, and after it was destroyed, Li Nan and his group were essentially left with nothing but their weapons.
When the Giant Black Hairy Spider knocked over the truck, the parrot in the driver's cabin had already flown out. Faced with such chaos on the ground, it flapped its wings and fled quickly!
After all the spiders were dealt with, that parrot surprisingly flew back and landed on Mo Xiaohui's shoulder.
Mo Xiaohui laughed and said, "Maybe it didn't like that cage, so you won't have to live in that small place anymore!"
In contrast to Mo Xiaohui's lightheartedness, the other two men looked troubled because they hadn't eaten or drunk anything all day. For now, food was a secondary concern; their primary issue was finding a place to stay for the night. If they ended up sleeping on the streets, they would surely be attacked by zombies. When darkness fell, visibility would be poor, and they would be at risk!
Li Nan had also come to realize that this city was not only filled with zombies but also enormous mutated animals! So caution was essential!
Following the road's extension, Li Nan and the other two moved cautiously forward, determined to find a place to sleep before nightfall.
After walking two or three thousand meters, Li Nan noticed a residential building at an angle by the roadside. He had no room for picky choices now; he could only set his sights on that building!
Li Nan led the way and stealthily approached. He discovered several severed limbs at the bottom of the building, with clear bite marks indicating they had been torn apart by some animal's jaws!
Li Nan raised his arm to signal those behind him not to move recklessly. If he guessed correctly, there might be some strange animal nearby this building.
The sky was growing darker, and this building was the closest structure Li Nan could find. He didn't want to give up; he steeled himself and charged upward without caring about any lurking dangers nearby. He had to seize this territory first.
There was a patch of decorative shrubs downstairs, their leaves yellowing but not falling off. As a gentle breeze blew through, there seemed to be some movement among the shrubs!
One small tree was shaking noticeably more than the others, and when Li Nan noticed this, he immediately raised both hands, ready with two Rebar Javelins at the ready!
At that moment, a parrot suddenly swooped down and landed right on the shrubs.
Li Nan was taken aback by this sight. Although parrots are not particularly intelligent animals, they should at least understand basic instincts of seeking benefit and avoiding danger. The fact that the parrot did not react suggested that there was nothing dangerous beneath the shrubs!
Just as Li Nan relaxed his grip, a Grass Snake suddenly darted out from under the bushes!
A green snake sprang out from beneath a pile of yellowing leaves, startling Li Nan. Interestingly, the Grass Snake did not seem to be aiming for Li Nan; it appeared to be fleeing instead!
In an unexpected turn of events, the parrot that had landed on the shrubs suddenly bent down, its feet seeming to lightly tap the ground as it swiftly caught the fleeing Grass Snake beneath its claws!
As the saying goes, strike at the snake's vital spot. The parrot seemed to instinctively know where to strike; its claws grasped precisely at the snake's vital area. With sharp talons digging in, the Grass Snake had no chance to resist and quickly went limp, seemingly lifeless!
Li Nan watched in astonishment while Mo Xiaohui behind him was even more surprised; she never expected her parrot to have such skills!
Realizing that the Grass Snake was dead, the parrot loosened its grip, allowing the snake to fall to the ground.
At this point, Li Nan had noticed intermittent spider silk around the shrubs. It was likely that those attacked zombies were victims of spiders from the culvert. Therefore, there should be no further danger in this building!
Li Nan bent down and picked up the Grass Snake from the ground, thanking the parrot with a simple “Thanks!”
The parrot remained silent but flapped its wings and flew back onto Mo Xiaohui's shoulder.
Li Dapeng also found the parrot intriguing and asked Mo Xiaohui, “What breed is this parrot? It can even catch snakes!”
Mo Xiaohui shook her head, "I don't know either. I found this parrot at someone's house, and it has been following me ever since. I'm not really sure what breed it belongs to!"
Li Nan turned around and smiled, "I really underestimated this little guy before. It seems bringing it along was quite a wise choice!"
As they spoke, Li Nan had already pushed aside the severed hands and arms on the ground and moved forward with the Rebar Javelin in hand.
Inside the hallway, the puddles of water had not yet dissipated, likely due to the heavy rain that had flooded this place earlier. Therefore, Li Nan did not plan to venture into the rooms on the first floor but instead headed straight for the second floor.
The building only had five floors, and the stairs were covered in dust, suggesting that there had been no zombies disturbing this area. If there had been any, they would have likely been eaten by that Giant Black Hairy Spider long ago.
With no lights, the hallway was pitch black. However, Li Nan pulled out the Wolf Eye Flashlight and warned Mo Xiaohui behind him, "Be careful; don't step into empty spaces!"
As he spoke, Li Nan reached a security door. Using his Rebar Javelin, he easily broke it open.
As soon as the door swung open, a wave of putrid odor rushed out from inside, nearly causing Li Nan to stumble!
The room inside was large, and under the light of the Wolf Eye Flashlight, Li Nan quickly turned to Mo Xiaohui and said, "Let's change rooms; we can't stay here!"
Mo Xiaohui looked puzzled and asked, "Why?"
Li Nan replied with a hint of frustration, "There's a dead body inside; I don't know how many days it's been dead, and it's crawling with maggots!"
Along with the smell coming from inside, Mo Xiaohui almost gagged. Li Nan quickly shut the half-broken security door and continued upstairs.
On the third floor, Li Nan found a suitable room. After entering, he first used the Wolf Eye Flashlight to check around and confirmed that there was no one inside and no danger before instructing Mo Xiaohui and the others to come in. At that moment, the outside world had already turned completely dark!
After bringing the other two into the room, Li Nan moved the sofa and coffee table to block the door as a precaution. He ensured that all windows were tightly closed and locked to make sure this room was safe enough for the night.
The family used a gas canister, and after discovering it, Li Nan found a kitchen knife and skinned the Grass Snake, cutting it into several pieces. He then opened the gas canister and used the faint flame to grill the snake meat.
After about five or six minutes, the snake meat in Li Nan's hand began to emit a savory aroma. Li Nan smiled and said, "Thanks to this parrot, we have dinner tonight. Let's give it a piece first!"
Li Nan tossed a piece of snake meat, and the parrot was not polite at all; it opened its mouth and caught it, then pressed it under its feet and began to peck at it continuously!
The remaining snake meat was shared among Li Nan and his companions. After filling their stomachs, they lay down to sleep.
Li Nan took a set of blankets from the family's bedroom and spread them directly on the living room floor. The survival in this apocalyptic world had made them unaccustomed to sleeping in a big bed; instead, sleeping on the floor felt better, at least giving a more genuine sensation.
Li Nan slept on the left, Mo Xiaohui on the right, while Li Dapeng lay horizontally in the middle.
As he lay on the blanket, Li Nan stared wide-eyed at the ceiling. Li Dapeng asked, "If we stay here tonight, what about tomorrow?"
Li Nan smiled, "We'll talk about tomorrow when it comes. Surviving today safely is something worth celebrating!"
Li Dapeng fell silent, his eyes tightly closed as if he had already fallen asleep. Meanwhile, Li Nan thought to himself, "The future is uncertain; every day could be our last."
