Although Li Nan did not go out to carry out any search missions that day, it was not an easy day for him.
After a series of troublesome events, Li Nan finally managed to sit on the sofa and find some peace.
While his body was at rest, his mind was still racing. First, there was the early visit from the Rat, bringing up matters related to Jiangbei Hospital. Then Brother Three came by to discuss issues concerning the Granary. Finally, there was the most puzzling incident—the death of Liu Xiaofei. Were these three events connected? What exactly did that cunning Rat intend to do?
Li Nan had already agreed to Brother Three's request, but he had outright rejected the Rat's demand in the morning. Did that mean Liu Xiaofei's death was entirely a result of the Rat's failed scheme?
Li Nan shook his head. He had initially thought the Rat was just a cowardly person, but it turned out that this guy was quite shrewd. More importantly, unlike Liu Long and Gao Hu, he couldn't figure out which faction the Rat belonged to or what his intentions were!
If Li Nan had agreed to the Rat's request in the morning and accompanied him to Jiangbei Hospital, would Liu Xiaofei still be alive?
Li Nan still couldn't find any clues. However, with things having come to this point, he could only take it one step at a time. As for the Rat's schemes, they were certainly elaborate; he wouldn't easily reveal his true intentions until the very end!
Before he knew it, night had fallen, and Mo Xiaohui was busy preparing dinner.
Setting aside his thoughts and watching Mo Xiaohui bustling around in the house, Li Nan smiled broadly. "They say heroes are most fond of gentle homes; with you being so virtuous, I almost want to be that carefree Liu A Dou!"
Mo Xiaohui feigned anger. "You just want to enjoy the fruits of my labor! You’ve been idle all day; why don’t you lend a hand?"
Li Nan didn’t move. "I’m a man; I should enjoy what's ready-made!"
Recently, Mo Xiaohui’s cooking skills had improved tremendously; he didn’t know where she got a cookbook from but seemed to be learning with great enthusiasm!
Since Mo Xiaohui had found a treasure in her cooking skills, Li Nan had been enjoying delicious meals. Moreover, Brother Three had sent over plenty of vegetables and fish for Li Nan, which allowed Mo Xiaohui to showcase her talents.
The level of abundance in their camp actually exceeded Li Nan’s expectations. However, under the leadership of the three older brothers, everyone in the camp continued to live frugally. After all, their food supplies were dwindling more and more. So aside from Li Nan’s family, everyone else was merely getting by.
Li Nan’s mindset differed from others; having endured hard times before and now feeling secure, he naturally wouldn’t skimp on those around him. Therefore, he didn’t care much about food and drink.
During dinner, Mo Xiaohui prepared two vegetable dishes and a fish that was reportedly caught earlier that day from the riverbank. Brother Three hadn’t even kept it for himself but instead sent it over to Li Nan.
At the dining table, Li Nan sat at the head, with Mo Xiaohui beside him, followed by Li Dapeng and Xin Qiqi.
While eating, Li Nan suddenly remembered something. "Wasn't Lingdang'er punished with confinement? What's happening now?"
Mo Xiaohui seemed to just recall Lingdang'er. "If you hadn't mentioned it, I would have forgotten about her. She's still in the attic, right? She won't be dead, will she?"
Li Nan shook his head. "It's only been a day and a night; she won't die from that. Just give her a lesson and let her out!"
Having nearly finished eating, Mo Xiaohui immediately put down his bowl and chopsticks and walked toward the attic where Lingdang'er was confined.
About two minutes later, a disheveled woman emerged from the attic, looking very haggard.
Seeing this, Li Nan called out, "Let her eat!"
A pair of vacant eyes peeked out from beneath her long hair, timidly staring at Li Nan and Mo Xiaohui. However, her knees did not bend despite her hunched posture.
But just a second later, Lingdang'er did bend her knees and mumbled, "I was wrong. Lingdang'er knows her mistake; please spare me, Brother Nan!"
Li Nan gestured for Xin Qiqi to help Lingdang'er to the dining table and asked, "What did you do wrong?"
Lingdang'er’s eyes flickered as she stammered and couldn't articulate clearly.
Although Li Nan had never been to the small attic upstairs, he could imagine it must be cramped and dark. Being confined there for a day and a night would be a mental torment that was truly hard to endure. One could see hints of this from Lingdang'er's complexion!
A full bowl of rice and a pair of chopsticks were already placed in front of Lingdang'er, but without Li Nan's approval, she dared not eat.
Li Nan put down his chopsticks and looked into her flickering eyes, saying, "You are not wrong. If you had absolute power, you would be the one teaching me a lesson now!"
Lingdang'er was filled with fear. "I wouldn't dare! I wouldn't dare!"
Li Nan waved his hand, signaling Xin Qiqi to take Li Dapeng back to his room. He didn't want Li Dapeng to witness this scene just yet.
At the dining table, only three people remained: Li Nan in the main seat, Mo Xiaohui at the side, and Lingdang'er sitting opposite Li Nan.
Li Nan calmly said, "You are indeed not wrong. If I hadn't met you under those circumstances that night, I might have been attracted to your appearance. However, being in this camp means you won't get anything good from me!" He then asked, "Were you previously Second Brother's woman?"
Lingdang'er nodded, "Yes, but now I have been given to you, Brother Nan. If you dislike me for not being a virgin, then I can be your maid; I can do anything!"
Li Nan smiled, "With your looks, do you think that just by beckoning with your finger, countless men will fall at your feet?"
Lingdang'er shook her head, "No! I have never thought that way!"
"Let's not talk about that. How did you end up in the camp and become Second Brother's woman?" Li Nan asked.
Lingdang'er hesitated for a moment. "I used to be... a bar hostess. When the Zombie outbreak happened, I was serving drinks to customers. Suddenly, a group of Zombies burst in, and the whole bar turned into a slaughterhouse. It was terrifying. In my panic, I fell under the bar counter and was fortunate enough to be covered by some tables and chairs, which helped me escape. When I came to my senses, the bar was filled with blood and flesh!
At that time, I rushed out of the bar in a panic and found it pouring rain outside. Without thinking, I ran out seeking help and wanting to scream, but it was all in vain. I was a woman who made a living selling my body; my existence was to please male customers so they would spend more money. So aside from drinking and looking good, I knew nothing else. Running into the rain, all I could do was wail, but what good was that? It only attracted a few Zombies!
In the heavy rain, I was chased by two Zombies. Just when I was exhausted and about to be caught, a car's headlights suddenly flashed before me, and the person inside was Second Brother!
At that moment, Second Brother rolled down the window and shot the two Zombies. Then he asked me, 'Do you want to come with me?'
To me at that time, Second Brother was like Zixia Fairy seeing Supreme Treasure, tears filling my eyes. After that, I became Second Brother's woman. I thought he would treat me well; little did I know that to him, women were merely playthings. So that night, I ended up on your bed!
I am a woman who survives by selling my body. In the bar, to survive, I've done many things to please men; it wasn't what I wanted but life forced me into it. In this apocalypse, I had even fewer choices. Wasn't this body born for men? So relying on men is my only way to survive; it has always been this way!"
After saying this, Lingdang'er was already teary-eyed but continued passionately: "Brother Nan looks down on me; I have nothing to say about it. A woman like me has been with thousands of men; naturally, Brother Nan would disdain me. Now I've come to terms with it; there’s really nothing worth clinging to in this apocalypse. Just give me a quick end!"
In this apocalypse, everyone has their story; although each is different, they all share a tragic element. Li Nan had long since developed immunity to such tear-jerking tales.
Li Nan said sternly: "Do you know why I dislike you?"
Lingdang'er shook her head as Li Nan continued: "Your desire to rely on men for survival is fundamentally wrong. You think that by satisfying a man's desires you can control his mind; that's why you wear seduction on your face. You see men as objects, so it's natural for them to view you as one too. Your fate is entirely of your own making!"
Lingdang'er exclaimed, "It's men who are infatuated with my body. I just want to sell myself at a good price; I am not wrong. I have never been wrong!"
At that moment, Lingdang'er seemed disoriented and knocked over the bowls on the dining table.
Li Nan saw the vacant look in Lingdang'er's eyes and immediately slapped her, saying, "You need to wake up. You think your beauty is your asset, but what about five years from now? Ten years from now? When you grow old and lose your looks, everything you relied on will turn into a fleeting dream. What will you do then? Will you just wait for death? Or will you willingly destroy yourself?"
After receiving the slap, Lingdang'er stared blankly for a moment, but soon regained some composure. However, her lips moved, yet she couldn't utter a word!
Li Nan put his arm around Mo Xiaohui's shoulder and said to Lingdang'er, "Some questions you should think about yourself. There are still some dishes on the table; why don't you eat a little?"
As Lingdang'er watched Li Nan go upstairs, tears streamed down her face, and she began to sob uncontrollably.
At that moment, as they walked up the stairs, Mo Xiaohui said to Li Nan, "Did I go too far with that woman? Leaving her alone like this won't cause any problems, right?"
Li Nan shook his head. "What you did was right. This woman won't back down unless her pride is crushed. She's an adult; I won't be as merciful as I am with Xin Qiqi, so you did well!"
Mo Xiaohui still had some doubts in her heart, but since Li Nan had already made his point clear, she didn't feel it was appropriate to interject further.
