Mo Xiaohui was already fast asleep, and Li Nan held her hand, silently murmuring, "Trust me, I will protect you and the child, and be your guardian spirit!"
The oil lamp beside them flickered, and fearing it might disturb Mo Xiaohui's sleep, Li Nan moved closer to blow it out. Just then, a sudden knock on the door interrupted him.
Seeing that Mo Xiaohui seemed to stir awake, Li Nan quickly said, "It's nothing. I'll go check. You just keep sleeping!"
Li Nan carried the oil lamp and opened the door to find Wen Jing standing there. He asked, "What’s the matter at this late hour?"
Wen Jing was panting with excitement and said, "Yongzi has woken up! He's fine; he hasn't turned into a Zombie!"
Upon hearing this, Li Nan's expression brightened. He immediately told Mo Xiaohui inside the room, "Yongzi has woken up! I'm going to check on him!"
After quietly closing the door, Li Nan went downstairs with Wen Jing.
Yongzi was the person who had been bitten by a Zombie two days ago while they were transporting building materials. At that time, Li Nan decisively amputated his injured leg to prevent the infection from spreading. When they returned to the villa, Yongzi developed a high fever and his body turned a purplish color. Li Nan ordered that Yongzi be chained in his own room and assigned someone to watch over him to prevent any accidents.
Yongzi's high fever lasted for two days and wouldn't subside no matter what medicine was used. The wound on his leg showed signs of infection, and it seemed like he was nearing death.
Li Nan had already lost hope for Yongzi but felt it would be inappropriate to declare him dead immediately due to his family. He could only wait and see. Unexpectedly, Yongzi proved to be quite resilient and managed to pull through!
When Li Nan saw Yongzi, he was already awake. Although his pupils were still somewhat dilated, his vital signs had improved.
Li Nan reached out to feel Yongzi's forehead and found it cool. He then said, "You really have a strong life force. You're the first one to survive after being bitten by a Zombie. Take care of your injuries; we still need people at the villa. You won't have to go on missions anymore; just stay here and help with what you can!"
Yongzi nodded, feeling bitter in his mouth. Seeing that he was still chained up, Li Nan personally unfastened it. "Don't blame me, brother; I was just afraid you would turn into a Zombie."
Yongzi opened his mouth weakly and said, "It's nothing; Brother Nan saved me. I will repay you by working hard in the future!"
Li Nan waved his hand dismissively. "That's too heavy a statement. Life goes on; even though you've lost a leg, it's not the end of the world. Tomorrow I'll have Old Man Qin make you a pair of iron crutches so you can continue being a hero!"
Yongzi choked up for a moment but turned his head away without saying anything more. Seeing this, Li Nan cheerfully said, "I'm glad you're okay. I won't delay your rest any longer; let's go."
Li Nan and Wen Jing stepped back out and returned to their respective rooms to rest.
Being able to escape death is a great thing, and through this experience, Li Nan vaguely understood the mechanism of the Zombie Virus. The virus spreads from wounds and indeed requires some time. This means that after being bitten by a Zombie on the limbs, as long as one amputates in time, they can save their life and prevent the transformation into a Zombie.
Although this discovery may not be of much use, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Li Nan, being a doctor, knows that this Zombie is a disease, and as long as it is a disease, there must be a way to treat it. However, given the current conditions are rudimentary, Li Nan does not have the energy or resources to conduct systematic research. He believes that in the future, as conditions improve, this world will surely change!
Now, the problem for Li Nan and his companions is survival. As long as survival is guaranteed, the next agenda will be to transform this world. If Li Nan can truly lead everyone to that point, humanity might still have a chance to turn things around! But that is already a matter for another time!
The next morning, Li Nan led his brothers out early to search for supplies, while the construction in the villa was progressing in an orderly manner, everything developing in a positive direction!
Jiangbei City has a population of one million, and it would be fortunate if there were even a few hundred Survivors among them. Therefore, Li Nan has reason to believe that the supplies accumulated in Jiangbei City before the apocalypse must be considerable. The few Survivors would not have emptied them all within just a few months; thus, there should still be plenty of supplies left in the city, just waiting to be discovered!
Following this line of thought, Li Nan began to seriously consider the geography of Jiangbei City. The city center is where Zombies are most numerous and rampant, and very few Survivors have the courage or opportunity to raid that area. So Li Nan's idea is that the more dangerous places hold more treasures!
Li Nan reminded his brothers in the vehicle and then instructed them to drive towards the city center.
The Truck traveled along the main road leading to the city center, with Zombies increasingly surrounding them, threatening to overturn the Truck!
Li Nan shouted at the driver: "Don't hold back! Ram through them and crush these bastards!"
With one vehicle and five people, this trip to the city center was quite precarious for Li Nan. However, some things can never be done perfectly; risks must still be taken!
The driver stepped on the gas pedal harder and turned the steering wheel left and right, crushing through and creating a path. Most of those Zombies were sent under the wheels and crushed into pulp!
Driving on the Asphalt Road felt like going uphill due to the sheer number of fallen Zombies. Li Nan and his companions rolled down their windows and pulled out knives and clubs, slaughtering Zombies as if they were chopping vegetables!
Zombies are indeed weak in combat power; however, their large numbers can be quite destructive when gathered together.
Li Nan did not want to linger too long with this group of Zombies and instructed the driver to speed up and shake them off if possible!
The vehicle reached a commercial area surrounded by tall buildings; upscale shops lined both sides. Seizing an opportunity, Li Nan shouted: "There’s a Department Store over there! Drive over and use the vehicle to block its entrance; we’ll jump in through the windows!"
The driver's driving skills were good; he maneuvered the vehicle sideways to block off the approaching Zombies outside. Then Li Nan and his companions jumped into the store from the other side.
Li Nan was the first to rush in and immediately spotted several beds with blankets, calling his brothers to load them onto the vehicle. Winter was approaching, and it was essential to gather some warm clothing!
Li Nan held the Black Gold Blade and, after taking a few steps, noticed that the lighting in the store had dimmed. He waved his hand and shouted to his brothers, "Everyone turn on your flashlights and stay alert!"
In Li Nan's hand was a Wolf Eye Flashlight, while the other brothers held hand-cranked flashlights they had scavenged long ago, which didn't require batteries and were perfect for the apocalypse!
The five flashlight beams converged in front of Li Nan and his group, casting shadows of people standing in rows, each with different postures, resembling terracotta warriors!
At that moment, one brother murmured from behind, "What's going on? Are these just human models?"
The shadows intertwined and remained motionless, and with the flashlight beams scattered, it was hard to discern anything unusual!
Li Nan gestured, "Don't act rashly for now!" As he spoke, Li Nan drew his Mechanical Composite Longbow from behind, nocked an arrow, and shot it straight at one of the figures' heads. The figure fell to the ground with a crisp sound, revealing it to be a Plastic Model!
One brother whispered in surprise, "Wow, so many plastic figures! This shopkeeper is quite twisted!"
Although there was something strange about it all, those figures were undoubtedly plastic models!
Li Nan waved his hand and continued forward. However, just as he approached the group of figures, he suddenly sensed something was off; not all of them could be plastic models!
At that moment, those unmoving figures seemed to catch a whiff of something delicious. They suddenly began to move their limbs as if they hadn't eaten in ages, all opening their mouths wide!
Li Nan shouted, "It's Zombies! Everyone stay alert and don’t fall for it!"
He drew three Feathered Arrows, pulled back his bowstring, and shot them directly into the foreheads of three Zombies, who fell lifelessly to the ground. However, judging by their numbers, there must be at least a hundred Zombies. In this cramped space, Li Nan and his group were at a disadvantage!
Like a fierce tiger, Li Nan retrieved his arrows and charged into the horde of Zombies. The Zombies, having been cooped up in this Department Store without any living humans or food for so long, had become almost dormant like plants. But upon seeing Li Nan and his companions, they sprang back to life.
With his blade swinging fiercely, Li Nan decapitated two or three Zombies with each strike. He fought left and right without regard for the Zombies, while the other brothers also bravely engaged in battle without holding back!
The horde of Zombies was completely defeated by Li Nan and the other four, who swiftly dispatched them in no time.
Behind those Zombies, Li Nan rubbed his eyes, seemingly unable to believe what he was seeing.
It was estimated that these Zombies were the staff and shoppers from the Department Store, and behind them was a sizable Food Supermarket filled with all kinds of items—Noodles, snacks, Puffed Fried goods—everything was dazzling to Li Nan's eyes!
However, many of the Cooked Vegetables and other items had already rotted and become infested with insects. Excluding those spoiled foods, what remained was still quite impressive!
Li Nan exclaimed with joy, "Everyone, load everything onto the truck! If we can't fit it all in one trip, we'll come back tomorrow!"
The five men were overjoyed; if they could take all this food away, it would surely weigh around seventy to eighty tons—an absolute treasure!
It was clear that one truck wouldn't be enough to carry everything. Li Nan instructed his brothers to start loading Noodles and cooking oil onto the truck, leaving the rest for next time.
Looking at the displayed food, Li Nan felt as if he were bursting with happiness. As he continued forward with his Wolf Eye Flashlight, he unexpectedly discovered a Counter filled with Flower and Vegetable Seeds, typically for bored individuals to tinker with in their pots. However, Li Nan recognized their value; these seeds were far more important than the Noodles outside!
He rummaged through the Counter and found a bag of Wheat Seeds and half a bag of Corn Seeds—about ten pounds in total!
Although he didn't understand why a commercial Counter in this city would have wheat and corn seeds, these items were like treasures to Li Nan—absolutely invaluable!
