At the entrance of the hotel in Guokan, Xin Yi unexpectedly spotted Lijie, who had disappeared months ago without a word. He hurriedly rode the motorcycle from the hotel Outpost to chase after her, but the damn motorcycle suddenly ran out of fuel, throwing him off. After stopping, Lijie didn't give him a pleasant look; after confirming that Xin Yi was fine, she turned and walked towards her car without looking back.
Xin Yi was indeed fine; it was true that the motorcycle had run out of fuel, but the inertia wasn't enough to make him uncontrollable. He knew that once the motorcycle lost power, he might never catch up with Lijie again. So he staged this little act of self-sacrifice. He understood very well why Lijie had left in the first place—not because she didn't care about him, but because she cared too much and couldn't handle his affections. He believed that upon seeing him fall, Lijie would surely stop (she seemed like quite a cunning person), and reality did not disappoint him; Lijie indeed still cared about him. Otherwise, how could she shed tears of sorrow when she saw him lying there motionless? Now that Lijie was about to leave, Xin Yi quickly scrambled to his feet without saying a word and stealthily hopped into the passenger seat of her car.
When Lijie opened the car door, she found Xin Yi sitting inside with a half-smile on his face, saying, "Wife, let's go home."
Lijie was both amused and exasperated by Xin Yi's expression and words. She snapped back angrily, "Get out! Who told you to get into my car? And who do you think you are calling your wife?! If I were your wife, then what is Shen Shanshan to you?! And what about the woman who's been sticking to you all day?! Don't tell me you're going to say they're your second and third wives?!"
"Hehehe..." Xin Yi chuckled awkwardly, thinking that this woman was really possessive; she was still angry after all this time. Originally it was just Shen Shanshan, but now there was also Roxy—things were getting more complicated. However, Lijie's suggestion about second and third wives was quite good; why hadn't he thought of that before? Hmm, this topic deserved some research later. But he wouldn't dare say that out loud; he just smiled and said, "Look where your thoughts are going! Of course, there's only you as my wife!" He certainly didn't say anything insincere; after all, there could only be one wife. But regarding what she just mentioned about second and third wives... well, he'd see how things went—there was also Shu Rui to consider.
"Stop with your slick talk! Get out of the car now! Otherwise, I'll call the police and report you for harassment!" Lijie was not buying his act at all and frowned as she shouted.
"Oh come on, wife! You're such a jinx! Speak of the devil and he shall appear!" Xin Yi pointed at a police officer walking towards them and said, "Look! The police are really coming! Let's run! Your husband is a black market citizen!"
As a killer, he instinctively felt apprehensive around police officers—not out of fear but from a dislike of getting involved with them. Lijie felt the same way; although her current identity didn't require her to fear such minor traffic officers (even the highest-ranking official in Guokan's police department couldn't do anything to her), her long-standing habits made her quickly jump into the car and start it up. The officer didn't stop her; he simply walked straight towards the motorcycle in the middle of the road.
It wasn't until they had driven for a while that Lijie suddenly realized what had happened and cursed angrily, "I fell for your trick again! Why should I care if you're a black market citizen? It would be better if you got caught by the police so you wouldn't keep bothering me!"
"Haha! Isn't it because you can't bear to see me get caught?" Xin Yi shamelessly laughed.
"I..." Lijie was so furious that she slammed on the brakes and abruptly stopped the car by the roadside. Coldly, she said, "Get out! I'm going home!"
"Home? Okay, let's go home! By the way, where is our home?" Xin Yi pretended not to understand as he chimed in.
Lijie pretended to be oblivious and pushed the car door open, getting out to circle around to Xin Yi's side, preparing to pull him out. When Xin Yi saw Lijie approaching, he quickly got out of the car, circled around, and climbed back into the driver's seat, saying, "Oh no, I don't know the way! You need to tell me early when there are forks in the road." As he spoke, he fastened his seatbelt and got ready to drive.
Lijie truly admired Xin Yi's thick skin; she wondered how she hadn't noticed it before when they were together. After a few months apart, he had transformed from a cold-blooded killer into a shameless rogue. However, to be honest, Lijie found herself liking this new version of Xin Yi even more. If he weren't so thick-skinned, how could she find an excuse to back down? In fact, she regretted leaving Xin Yi after they had been together; she had grown accustomed to treating him as everything in her life. She knew that this feeling would accompany her for a lifetime, and leaving him was merely a reaction to his emotional nature. As for Xin Yi's thick skin, it was entirely a skill he had developed over the past few months with several women, especially during his time with Roxy. Their awkward moments had occurred frequently; if Xin Yi hadn't honed this skill, he probably wouldn't have known how to interact with her at all.
"Fine, since you won't get out of the car, I won't get in either!" Lijie coldly threw out this remark and slammed the car door shut as she walked to the roadside, seemingly preparing to hail a taxi. Seeing this, Xin Yi became anxious and quickly unbuckled his seatbelt to jump out of the car. He walked over to Lijie and said, "Xiao Jie, can't we talk properly? There are many things I think I need to explain to you. Actually, many things might not be as you imagine them. Please listen to me."
"No need," Lijie replied coldly. "There's nothing to explain. Besides, I'm not interested in knowing how things are. Just go away; I'm living my life well now. Please don't disturb me anymore, okay? Xin Yi."
"No, do you think it's unfair not to give me a chance to explain myself? I know you're feeling sad; aren't I too? But..." Xin Yi hurriedly tried to clarify, but before he could finish his sentence, Lijie interrupted him angrily, shouting, "But no matter what, you won't leave her, will you?!"
"This..." Xin Yi was momentarily speechless. Yes, no matter what happened, he wouldn't leave Shen Shanshan or Shu Rui. If he were to leave them because of Lijie, then he wouldn't have hurt Lijie in the first place. But if that were true, then Shen Shanshan and Shu Rui wouldn't have been hurt like Lijie had been either. He didn't know; thus he was at a loss for words.
At that moment, a taxi drove up from behind. Lijie reached out her hand to hail it, but the taxi didn't slow down and sped past them. Just as the car brushed by them, suddenly the rear window rolled down revealing a chubby man sitting in the backseat. The man gave them an eerie smile that only Lijie could see since she was facing the car while Xin Yi stood beside her watching her. That man's smile made Lijie's heart skip a beat; she felt something was off just as she noticed that the man held a dark gun aimed directly at Xin Yi.
With a bang of gunfire, both fell to the ground simultaneously. Xin Yi lay on the ground while Lijie was pressed against him. He heard the gunshot and realized it came from that taxi which had already sped away in a flash. At that moment, Xin Yi didn't have the energy to consider who fired the shot; his priority was ensuring that Lijie was safe and finding a way to comfort her.
He saw Lijie lying on him with wide eyes staring at him intently and smiled: "See? You still pretend not to care about me; you just can't bear for your husband to be in trouble." However, Lijie didn't respond; she continued gazing at him with deep affection in her eyes. Xin Yi felt warmth in his heart and thought that perhaps Lijie had missed him too much during their time apart—now that they were so close together again she was getting emotional? Although being so close felt somewhat inappropriate under broad daylight on hard ground.
But did it matter? Shouldn't he let go of such concerns? Well then! Why not go crazy just this once? How many times can one afford such madness in life? So Xin Yi wrapped his arms around Lijie's slim waist and leaned in towards her fragrant lips for a kiss. They both let out a sound simultaneously; however, it wasn't quite what one would expect from such an intimate moment. The sound from Xin Yi came because his hand brushed against something smooth and warm on Lijie's back—he was surprised by it—while Lijie's sound seemed filled with pain as her body trembled.
Suddenly realizing something was wrong, Xin Yi quickly pulled his hand back and looked at it—oh no! His hand was covered in bright red blood! The warm wetness on Lijie's back turned out to be fresh blood gushing from her wound! Finally understanding why Lijie lay motionless on him—she had been shot! The bullet struck her back where he couldn't see it; he didn't know how serious the injury was. Gently lifting Lijie's body slightly, he trembled as he asked: "Xiao Jie, how are you? Where's your wound?"
"Oh..." At that moment Lijie finally made some noise; she tried to smile but looked even worse than crying. She propped herself up with her hands trying to move away from Xin Yi but lost her balance and fell sideways. Xin Yi quickly reached out to support her falling body and sat up from the ground while holding Lijie close: "Don't move; I'll take you to the hospital right away!"
I'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that.
