Su Xiaoyu nervously grasped my hand, feeling that the man before us was extremely dangerous. His words seemed to carry a certain magic, making it hard to resist his demands.
" Lin Hen... let's go..." she whispered, her tone laced with a hint of pleading.
I tightened my grip on Su Xiaoyu's hand, giving her a reassuring look. Then, I took a deep breath and faced Yama King, saying each word clearly: "I refuse."
Yama King narrowed his eyes slightly, seemingly surprised by my response. He remained silent for a moment before slowly speaking, his tone carrying a barely perceptible chill: "Are you sure? You should think carefully; no one in this world has dared to refuse me."
"Oh? Is that so?" I raised an eyebrow provocatively. "Then I suppose I will be the first today." With that, I tightened my grip on Su Xiaoyu's hand and turned to leave.
"Want to leave? It's not that easy!"
A shadow suddenly descended from above, and a powerful pressure rendered both Su Xiaoyu and me immobile. Struggling to lift my head, I saw a figure in a black robe and black hat that had appeared before us without our noticing.
"Yama... King..." Su Xiaoyu exclaimed in terror, her eyes wide as she sensed that this person's strength far exceeded that of the previous black-clad figures and evil spirits.
Yama King ignored Su Xiaoyu; he merely looked at me coldly, his voice filled with disdain and warning: "Young man, do not think that having some strength gives you the right to act recklessly. Your actions today have already violated the authority of Yama Palace. I give you one last chance: submit or die!"
With each word he spoke, the air around us seemed to freeze, the overwhelming pressure bearing down on me like Mount Tai, making it hard for me to breathe.
I gritted my teeth, desperately resisting this immense force as cold sweat dripped down my forehead. I knew very well that with my current strength, I was no match for Yama King.
" Lin Hen, what... what should we do..." Su Xiaoyu's voice trembled as she clutched my hand tightly, her fingertips icy.
I opened my mouth to say something but found myself unable to make a sound. Just then, Yama King suddenly extended his hand, and a beam of black light shot straight toward me.
I instinctively wanted to dodge, but my body felt as if it were frozen in place, unable to move at all. Just at that critical moment, a flash of white light appeared, blocking my path.
"Bang!"
After a loud crash, the white light dissipated, revealing a familiar figure slowly collapsing.
"White Impermanence?!" I exclaimed, rushing forward to support him.
"Cough cough... you... you brat... really are a troublemaker..." White Impermanence's face was pale, a trace of blood trickling from the corner of his mouth, yet he wore a faint smile of relief.
"How could you..." I hadn't finished speaking when I was interrupted by Yama King's cold voice.
"White Impermanence, what do you mean by this?" Yama King asked in a chilling tone, his eyes flashing with dangerous light.
"It means nothing. I just don't want to see you make the same mistake again." White Impermanence struggled to stand up, looking at Yama King with determined eyes. " Lin Hen is my friend, and I won't let you harm him."
"Friend?" Yama King scoffed as if he had heard a joke. "White Impermanence, when did you become so naive? Don't forget your identity and your duty!"
"My identity? My duty?" White Impermanence smiled bitterly. "My identity is the second-in-command of Yama Palace, and my duty is to assist you in managing the Underworld Ghost Domain. But is everything I've done truly right?" He turned to look at me, his eyes filled with complex emotions. " Lin Hen, I'm sorry. I can't tell you too much, but I hope you remember that your father is a hero..."
Before he could finish his sentence, White Impermanence's body suddenly trembled violently. He clutched his chest in pain as black mist continuously poured out from within him.
"What... what have you done?!" I looked at Yama King in terror.
"Hmph, the consequence of betraying Yama Palace is only death!" Yama King said coldly, without a hint of compassion in his eyes.
"White Impermanence!" I was filled with grief and anger but felt powerless.
Yama King ignored White Impermanence any further and turned to me, a glint of coldness flashing in his eyes.
"Now, no one can stop me," he said slowly as he raised his hand. The black mist gathered in his palm, forming a black long sword.
I closed my eyes in despair, waiting for death to arrive. However, the excruciating pain I anticipated did not come; instead, I felt a powerful force enveloping me and swiftly pulling me backward.
"Run!" A weak voice of White Impermanence reached my ears. I opened my eyes and found myself carried away by an invisible force to several dozen meters away.
Su Xiaoyu was running towards me in a panic, her eyes filled with worry and fear. I didn't have time to explain; I grabbed her hand and turned to run.
"Trying to escape? It's not that easy!" Yama King roared, transforming into a shadow that chased after us.
" Lin Hen, quickly use the teleportation talisman!" Su Xiaoyu pulled a yellow talisman from her pocket and shoved it into my hand.
I had no time to think; I bit my finger and let a drop of blood fall onto the talisman. It ignited instantly, enveloping us in a golden light.
After a dizzying spin, we found ourselves on a dark, damp street. The crumbling houses on either side emitted a foul smell of decay that was nauseating.
"Is this... the Underworld Ghost Market?" I looked around at the unfamiliar surroundings, filled with confusion.
"That's right. This is the most chaotic place in the Underworld Ghost Domain, a place beyond the jurisdiction of Yama Palace," Su Xiaoyu explained. "We're safe for now."
I sighed in relief, only then feeling waves of exhaustion wash over me. I leaned against the wall and slowly sat down, replaying the scenes that had just unfolded in my mind.
The words of White Impermanence, the murderous intent of Yama King, and my father... everything felt like a tangled mess that I couldn't sort out.
" Lin Hen, are you okay?" Su Xiaoyu asked with concern as she handed me a bottle of water. "Drink some water."
I took the water and gulped down a few mouthfuls, feeling slightly better.
"Xiao Yu, do you know why White Impermanence wanted to save us?" I asked.
Su Xiaoyu shook her head. "I don't know either, but what he said before he died must be important."
"He said, my father is a hero..." I murmured, confusion filling my eyes.
" Lin Hen, what should we do now?" Su Xiaoyu asked.
I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself. The immediate priority was to uncover the truth behind all of this, find my father's whereabouts, and... avenge White Impermanence!
"We need to leave here and search for the legendary Ancient Artifact." I stood up, determination flashing in my eyes. "Only by finding the artifact can we confront Yama King and unravel all the mysteries!"
Su Xiaoyu nodded and tightly grasped my hand.
"No matter what happens, I will stay by your side."
Looking into her resolute eyes, warmth surged in my heart.
"Let's go."
I took Su Xiaoyu's hand and walked deeper into the Ghost Market of the Underworld.
