The winter vacation quietly passed by.
The surge of energy rising within Zhang Yang prompted him to study with all his might. However, after evening study sessions, he had an additional activity: he would first take Ding Weiwei home. Sometimes they would ride side by side on their bikes, sometimes Zhang Yang would give Ding Weiwei a ride, or they would walk hand in hand along quiet paths. During this time, they often discussed academic issues, balancing their studies and budding romance.
In just a month, Zhang Yang's grades had surged into the top ten of his regular class, which put him in a great mood. That evening, after dropping Ding Weiwei off at her home, Zhang Yang walked back towards his own house.
As he approached Fire Dragon Danfeng Street near his home, he saw a tall woman approaching him under the flickering pink lights.
"Hey handsome, want to have some fun?" The woman flashed a bright smile, revealing her white teeth.
"I’m broke, just a poor guy," Zhang Yang waved his hand dismissively. This excuse seemed to work well in fending off persistent women; he had used it many times before.
"You’re so handsome; how could you be broke?" The woman grabbed Zhang Yang's hand and leaned closer. Just as he was about to shake her off, another woman approached them: "Furong, we have a customer; stop lingering on the street." This woman was slightly older and quickly walked over to them. Furong? Why not call her Chrysanthemum? Zhang Yang cursed inwardly.
However, he felt somewhat relieved that he wouldn’t have to deal with Furong anymore. Just as he was about to leave, a sudden jolt of electricity surged through his waist. Zhang Yang turned his head sharply and locked eyes with the older woman, who looked startled and dropped the stun gun she was holding with a clatter. The two women quickly grabbed each other's hands and ran away.
Zhang Yang felt dizzy and weak, on the verge of collapsing when suddenly an unlicensed van sped towards him. He barely had time to react and could only twist his body slightly to face the vehicle with his back. With a loud crash, he was knocked onto the ground.
Zhang Yang let out a grunt and shook his head to clear his mind. Just as he was trying to get up, three men jumped out of the van.
One of them, wearing an ear-flap hat, swung a baseball bat at Zhang Yang's head. Blood gushed out as Zhang Yang lost consciousness.
"Get him in the van!" Hat Man picked up the stun gun from the ground and hurried back to the vehicle to drive. The other two men, dressed in red and black jackets respectively, lifted Zhang Yang and tossed him into the back row of the van. The vehicle roared to life and quickly disappeared around the corner.
"Boss, it's done. We're taking him to the seaside now; don’t worry. We’ll make sure it’s clean," Hat Man said as he picked up his phone, spoke briefly, and then hung up.
"Brother Mu, isn't it simple for that second generation to take care of things? Why do they need us?" Black Padded Jacket asked while handing a cigarette to the Hat Man driving.
"This is about playing for keeps, of course they need us. Who's more professional than us? The boss of South District was taken out at home on New Year's Eve; the territory is in disarray. Now our boss has connected with that second generation, and he said he wants to hand over the South District territory to us so we can make big money in the future. The boss instructed that this matter must be handled well," said the Hat Man, known as Brother Mu, exhaling a puff of smoke.
The van drove onto the road leading out of the city.
"I heard this kid is quite skilled! Yet we just took care of him like that," Red Down Jacket remarked.
"If he wasn't skilled, would we need to set a trap? We could have just gone straight in," Hat Man chuckled.
"I say, Brother Mu, your method is too damn sneaky. Those two girls acted pretty well," Black Padded Jacket commented.
"Stop talking nonsense. What girls? These are crowd actors I hired. Damn it, I spent over half an hour teaching that woman how to use the stun gun, and had to show her how to activate it suddenly," Hat Guy suddenly leered, "But that young long-legged girl was good; I even volunteered myself once to teach her how to seduce men."
"Damn, Brother Mu, you're only telling us now. You could have let me have a go yesterday too; if not, that older one would have been fine as well. That's not fair..." Black Padded Jacket complained.
"Enough, we've all been paid. If you want something, go find it yourself after we finish this job," Red Down Jacket said impatiently.
"You get it. Anyway, how do we deal with this kid?" Black Padded Jacket shifted the topic.
"I've prepared a spot on a deserted beach. Once we get there, we'll first cut his Achilles tendons, then splash water on him to wake him up and tell him who sent him on his way. Just finish him off with a baseball bat," Hat Man said coldly.
"That second generation is really ruthless," Black Padded Jacket clicked his tongue.
"Mainly, I've heard this kid is too tough. If we don't deal with his tendons first, I'm afraid the three of us won't be able to handle him," Hat Man said. "After we're done, I've prepared cement and a big wooden box over there. We'll throw him in the box and seal it with cement. There's an abandoned small dock by the sea; we can just toss the cement box into the water."
The van drove toward a desolate beach, where there were no more paved roads. The bumpy dirt road and the sandy beach caused the already poor-condition van to jolt violently.
"I said, drive slower; we're going to get tossed around," Red Down Jacket and Black Padded Jacket complained almost in unison to the driver, Hat Man.
"Damn it, it's freezing cold; let's just get this done quickly," Hat Man replied, but his speed noticeably slowed down, clearly affected by the rough ride as well.
Amidst the bumps, Zhang Yang's body was thrown around. Since they had knocked Zhang Yang out with a blow, they hadn't tied him up. With a thud, Zhang Yang's body fell from the back seat to the floor in front of him due to the violent jolting. Red Down Jacket and Black Padded Jacket turned back to look at him simultaneously. "This kid isn't dead already, is he?" Red Down Jacket asked.
"Am I that unprofessional? He needs to know who did this to him. Don't worry; once we get there, a little water will wake him up!" Hat Man said. "It's such a hassle; killing someone requires so much fuss."
The van had already crossed a stretch of beach and drove onto an abandoned dock's long platform that extended into the sea, with the road surface already worn and broken.
Inside the van, the layout was as follows: Zhang Yang lay sideways at the bottom of the last row of seats, while Red Down Jacket and Black Padded Jacket sat in the row in front. Hat Man was driving.
The van was cluttered with old newspapers, cigarette butts, and miscellaneous items. Near Zhang Yang's head was a Skewered Lamb Stick, which was actually a sharpened bicycle spoke with remnants of meat on it—likely left behind by someone who had eaten lamb skewers in the van before.
