After the college entrance examination scores were announced, there were three days to fill out the application forms. Ding Weiwei chose Huaxia National University for her first choice, majoring in Journalism, while Zhang Yang selected Huaxia University of Political Science and Law, focusing on Criminal Law. Both choices were straightforward.
After completing their applications, Zhang Yang received a call from Hou Long. "I have some free time these days; I’ll come to Haizhou to hang out with you guys," Hou Long said.
Zhang Yang thought to himself that Hou Long still wanted to compare skills with him. He shook his head helplessly and called Black Wolf. "He called me too; just compare with him. There’s no first in literature and no second in martial arts; when you encounter a master, it’s natural to feel a bit anxious," Black Wolf said.
The three met up, and after enjoying a meal and resting briefly, they headed to a small grove by the playground in Wuzhong. The school had already closed for vacation, and there were only a few students playing soccer on the field; the grove was completely empty.
"We're all brothers here; let’s keep it light," Black Wolf said with a smile, gesturing with his fingers.
Hou Long and Zhang Yang both cupped their fists in greeting, making it seem quite formal.
The summer breeze was somewhat hot. As Hou Long made his move, he noticed that Zhang Yang's T-shirt did not flutter in the wind, as if his body had an aura that held the fabric in place. Hou Long was taken aback but knew he could not hold back at this point. He focused his energy and launched a steady attack.
Hou Long's initial assault was calm and composed, while Zhang Yang maintained a relaxed demeanor, choosing to evade or block only when Hou Long came close. The two exchanged blows for several minutes, resembling two gentlemen discussing philosophy over tea, with no hint of hostility in their movements.
Zhang Yang thought that this approach wouldn’t work for long. Suddenly, he accelerated his speed, his palms flying as he shifted into an offensive stance. Hou Long was startled; he hadn’t expected Zhang Yang’s movements to become so swift all of a sudden, making it increasingly difficult to dodge or defend.
With a loud "bang," Zhang Yang struck Hou Long's shoulder with one palm. He didn’t channel his full strength into the blow; he merely hoped to knock Hou Long down or at most cause some swelling on his shoulder without causing any hard feelings. However, the force felt as solid as iron, and Hou Long remained unharmed.
"It seems Hou Long is indeed an internal martial arts master," Zhang Yang thought to himself. Becoming the Sanda King of Shanhai Province was no small feat.
After receiving the blow, Hou Long staggered slightly but managed to regain his balance. However, if this continued and he took hits repeatedly, victory would soon be determined. He felt increasingly anxious as he found himself enveloped by Zhang Yang's palm strikes, unable to mount a fierce counterattack.
At that moment, Zhang Yang exposed an opening in his abdomen. Hou Long was delighted; he blocked Zhang Yang's attack with his left hand and swiftly punched towards Zhang Yang's stomach with his right fist. To his surprise, it felt like hitting a pile of cotton—there was no resistance at all. Just as he tried to retract his fist, it felt as though it had been caught.
Seeing Zhang Yang's palms coming at him from both sides again, Hou Long realized he could no longer defend with just one hand. He shouted and exerted all his strength to pull back his right fist. At that moment, the pulling sensation suddenly vanished; the force of his retraction was too strong for him to control, causing him to stumble and fall to the ground.
"I lost!" Hou Long quickly stood up but felt his face flush red.
"Not at all; Brother Hou was worried about hurting me and retracted your punch too quickly—it's purely my honor," Zhang Yang said while cupping his hands in respect.
"Senior Brother, losing to Brother Yang is nothing to be ashamed of. Have you heard of the Winged Fire Serpent?" Black Wolf laughed as he stepped forward and dusted off Hou Long's pants.
"Are you talking about that assassin group?" Hou Long asked.
"Brother Yang took on three opponents at once," Black Wolf replied with a grin. It was clear that Azheng had already informed Black Wolf about this encounter.
Hou Long's embarrassment instantly vanished, replaced by immense shock. The Winged Fire Serpent, as a killer organization, possessed exceptional skills, worked in perfect harmony, and executed their actions cleanly and efficiently. Due to their proficiency in disguise, very few had seen their true faces. The prices set by the Winged Fire Serpent were high, but worth it; it was said they had never missed a target.
Saying one against three was indeed an exaggeration, as Zhang Yang was not facing three opponents at once and had not fallen into their ambush but was instead engaged in a frontal battle. Even so, it was still astonishing.
"Are you serious?" Hou Long asked, turning to look at Zhang Yang.
"Sort of. It was sent by Man Cheng Chuan, the Drug Lord from Tianfu Province. I once disrupted a deal he had in Haizhou," Zhang Yang said after glancing at Black Wolf.
"What?!" Hou Long was shocked again and paused before asking, "So how do you plan to deal with this Man Cheng Chuan?"
"He's already dead... probably at the hands of the Winged Fire Serpent," Zhang Yang said while looking at Hou Long, deciding to share the latter part of his thought.
"What?!" Hou Long could hardly react anymore; his nerves were almost frayed. One surprise after another—what kind of rhythm was this? The assassins couldn't eliminate their target and instead went back to kill the employer!
"Such a person deserves to die. However, whether it was the Winged Fire Serpent who did it is just my guess. Let's not dwell on such depressing topics. Brother Hou, after summer vacation, I will be going to university in Shanzhou; we will have more chances to gather then," Zhang Yang said with a laugh, trying to brush off the matter.
Hou Long's nerves had been repeatedly shocked; his expression was somewhat strange. After a long pause, he finally said, "Alright, I hope Brother Zhang can give me some pointers then."
"We're brothers; there's no need for such formalities. Come on, let's go soak at the Hot Spring Club," Black Wolf said, raising his hand. Originally Wang Donghai's Hot Spring Club had now been smoothly taken over by the Seeking Society.
Hou Long felt somewhat downcast. He had mentally prepared himself for possibly losing when sparring with Zhang Yang, but the gap was far greater than he expected. Moreover, even the legendary assassin group Winged Fire Serpent had once been defeated by Zhang Yang—that was on an entirely different level.
That night, on the high-speed train back to Shanzhou, Hou Long received a call from Boss Xiao Hansheng.
"Arriving at 9? Then just come directly to Great Mountain Water; I have a friend from Haizhou here as well. Let's soak together; I also have something to ask you," Xiao Hansheng said over the phone.
Damn it, another soak? Hou Long felt a stir of annoyance inside. Great Mountain Water is a high-end bathing center in Shanzhou.
When Hou Long arrived at Great Mountain Water, Xiao Hansheng had already finished bathing and entered a quiet tea room within Great Mountain Water. Hou Long quickly rinsed off without soaking and put on a bathrobe before entering the room.
Inside the room, Xiao Hansheng and a young man were enjoying tea. "Hou Long, come sit; there are no outsiders here," Xiao Hansheng smiled and said. "This is Young Master Wu from Haizhou; this is my special assistant Hou Long."
"Nice to meet you, Brother Hou," the young man referred to as Young Master Wu raised his teacup with a smile. He was indeed the son of Wu Liangdong, Deputy Mayor of Haizhou City and Deputy Captain of Public Security at Southern District Police Station.
"The person who sold me Black Orchid is named Zhang Yang, right? Young Master Wu seems to have some connection with him," Xiao Hansheng said with a smile while taking a sip of tea.
"Hmph!" Wu Liangdong slammed down his teacup heavily. "Boss Xiao is flattering me; I can't afford to provoke such a character!"
Hou Long remained silent. Xiao Hansheng's thoughts were always difficult to decipher. The Kangbao Group was large, but aside from legitimate business, Hou Long had never been involved in anything else. He was generally responsible for Xiao Hansheng's safety, and if there were any illicit dealings behind Xiao Hansheng, he wouldn't expose himself. For this reason, Hou Long never asked too many questions; after all, he was just an employee, and as long as he got paid, that was enough.
Now, he couldn't guess what Wu Liangdong was planning. However, Xiao Hansheng had just given Zhang Yang ten million; could it be that he was now going to deal with him? Should he remind Zhang Yang?
"Young Master Wu is angry, ha ha," Xiao Hansheng said to Hou Long. "It's nothing serious; I mainly wanted to ask you how much you know about this young man named Zhang Yang."
Hou Long collected his thoughts and briefly shared what he knew, admitting that he had sparred with Zhang Yang and felt inferior. Of course, Hou Long did not portray Zhang Yang as being as formidable as he actually was.
"The drug dealer Man Cheng Chuan from Tianfu Province has been supplying drugs to Haizhou, and once he fell into this kid's trap. Now I've heard that Man Cheng Chuan is dead; it might be related to this kid," Wu Liangdong sneered.
"Tianfu Province is so far away; it shouldn't have anything to do with him," Hou Long said, his mind in turmoil, but maintaining a calm exterior.
"He's just a high school student; if even you can't match him, that's already abnormal. What else is impossible? I heard he's coming to Shanzhou for university?" Xiao Hansheng still wore a smile.
"Yes, he mentioned it to me," Hou Long replied.
"If I get the chance, I really want to meet him," Xiao Hansheng turned to Wu Liangdong. Wu Liangdong glanced at Hou Long and added, "That's true; there's plenty of time ahead. Come on, let's have some tea."
