As soon as Zhang Yang got home, he received a call from Shen Zhiyu. "There's a car coming to pick you up at 9 AM. Pack your things quickly; you need to attend training for two months, which coincides with the start of your school," Shen Zhiyu said over the phone.
"What the hell? Training is tomorrow—no, it's past midnight now, so I should say today—and you're telling me this now?" Zhang Yang replied.
"I was planning to let the person picking you up inform you when they arrived downstairs. Stop complaining; many people are eager to attend this training but can't get in. I'm hanging up now," Shen Zhiyu said before ending the call.
After hanging up, Zhang Yang saw a text message from Ding Weiwei. With no other option, he texted her about attending the training. It was frustrating that they had just started to enjoy their time together and were already going to be separated, but Zhang Yang was also curious about what kind of training the Heavenly Mechanism Group had arranged.
"Get some rest; school is starting soon. I can come to the capital to visit you on the weekend," they chatted on the phone for a while longer before finally hanging up.
The next morning at 9 AM, Zhang Yang went downstairs on time and saw an SUV parked at the unit door with its windows down. It looked like a Toyota Land Cruiser but had no logo, and its black body seemed modified. The most interesting part was the license plate, which had a blue background with four white characters: Temporary License Plate.
"What the hell, this license plate is ridiculous," Zhang Yang remarked after inspecting both front and back plates and then speaking towards the driver's window. Temporary plates are usually made of paper and placed on the windshield, while the front and back license plate holders are typically empty. This car bizarrely displayed such a homemade license plate and was still on the road—quite impressive.
"Are you Zhang Yang?" There was only one person in the driver's seat, a large man wearing a white T-shirt with a face that looked chiseled. His hair was cut very short on the sides and back, while the top was slightly longer and awkwardly styled into a three-seven parting with gel.
"That's me. Who are you?" Zhang Yang asked as he opened the car door and sat down in the passenger seat.
"I'm Liu Gang, the driver for Heavenly Mechanism Group. I'm here to take you to Shanhai Military Region Airport," Liu Gang started the car, still expressionless.
"A driver? With that attitude, I thought you were a manager," Zhang Yang said as he pulled out a cigarette and offered one to Liu Gang.
"There are plenty of managers; there's only one driver," Liu Gang replied without getting angry as he took the cigarette and lit it. "If I hadn't happened to be in Haizhou on business and then returned to Shanzhou to pick you up, you wouldn't have this opportunity."
"Only one?" Zhang Yang was indeed surprised. "What about when leaders need a car?"
"What do you mean? There are many drivers," Liu Gang exhaled smoke dismissively.
"But didn't you just say there's only one driver?" Zhang Yang asked.
"There's only one driver; there are many who drive. Those who drive can't be called drivers. 'Driver' means someone who controls; 'mechanism' refers to machines including cars, planes, yachts, etc. You ask a lot of questions; you're quite the inquisitive one," Liu Gang explained.
"Heh." After hearing Liu Gang's explanation, Zhang Yang chuckled and decided not to ask more questions, closing his eyes to rest in the car.
Driving on the highway from Haizhou to Shanzhou takes at most four hours if you don't speed. As they approached Shanzhou, Liu Gang stopped the car and had lunch at a nearby service area.
During the meal, Zhang Yang asked where the training was taking place, to which Liu Gang replied, "Blade Training Camp."
Zhang Yang initially wanted to ask for more details, but before he could, Liu Gang continued, "I only know that this training session lasts for two months. Don't ask me anything else." His facial expression remained as stiff as a wooden board, showing no change.
"I say, can't you smile?" Zhang Yang ignored Liu Gang's introduction and asked with a grin.
To his surprise, Liu Gang managed to squeeze out a smile that lasted only a second before his expression quickly returned to normal. He coldly replied with one word: "I can."
Zhang Yang suppressed his laughter and patted Liu Gang on the shoulder. "Bro, you are truly a rare talent. I admire you."
Liu Gang surprisingly responded, "You're too kind."
This Liu Gang eventually became a life-and-death brother to Zhang Yang. Of course, that's a story for later.
In the afternoon, Liu Gang drove directly to the military airport of the Shanhai Military Region. Before Zhang Yang got out of the car, Liu Gang handed him a form.
At the airport, a passenger plane was already on standby. A Lieutenant Colonel stood behind a table and signaled for Zhang Yang to present the form. Before handing it over, Zhang Yang quickly glanced at it: "Blade Training Camp Short-Term Training Application Form."
It contained his photo and personal information, along with the stamp of the Heavenly Mechanism Group. Before Zhang Yang could finish reading it, the Lieutenant Colonel took the form and pointed to the bottom while handing over a pen and seal. Upon looking closer, Zhang Yang noticed a statement at the bottom:
"I am aware that this special training may result in physical injury or even life-threatening situations, but I still resolutely choose to participate in this training. Blade Training Camp bears no responsibility for any consequences."
"What kind of training is this? Is it life-threatening? And I have to sign a waiver," Zhang Yang cursed inwardly.
"Please make your decision quickly; you can withdraw immediately if you have second thoughts," the Lieutenant Colonel reminded him as he noticed Zhang Yang deep in thought.
Upon hearing this, Zhang Yang thought he had to see what this Blade Training Camp was all about. He picked up the pen and swiftly signed his name and pressed his thumbprint before handing in the form and walking towards the boarding stairs without looking back.
As he entered the cabin, he found that more than ten people were already seated, including two women who appeared to be in their twenties or thirties. It seemed that Zhang Yang was the youngest among them.
"Wow, a clean-cut scholar has arrived." A Buzz-Cut Young Man in an army crew neck shirt, looking to be around twenty-seven or twenty-eight, shouted after Zhang Yang entered the cabin. As Zhang Yang approached, he greeted him again, "Brother, which department are you from?"
"I just graduated from high school, just here to join the fun," Zhang Yang said lightly as he placed his bag down and sat behind the Buzz-Cut Young Man.
Zhang Yang's voice was not loud, but several people still heard him. The cabin erupted into a buzz of surprise and discussion.
"I mean, are you pretending or are you serious?" Buzz-Cut Young Man looked at Zhang Yang and asked.
"I'm just a student; what would I be pretending for? After this special training, I still have to go back to school at Huaxia University of Political Science and Law," Zhang Yang replied calmly.
The noise in the cabin settled down. Some seemed to believe Zhang Yang's words, while others scoffed and chose not to engage further.
"Brother, have you heard of the short-term special training at Blade Training Camp?" Buzz-Cut Young Man continued to ask, his expression growing more astonished.
"Not really," Zhang Yang sensed that Buzz-Cut Young Man was quite enthusiastic. This time he responded with a slight smile, paused briefly, and continued, "But I've already signed up."
"Wow, you've got some guts. Just look at the people in this cabin; aside from the military, there’s the Security Department, and then there’s the guard bureau and special forces..." Buzz-Cut Young Man lowered his voice and whispered in Zhang Yang's ear.
