"Cover your mouth and nose!" Zhang Yang whispered, but he suddenly heard a tearing sound beside him.
Fortunately, Shi Qing's clothes were wet from swimming in the pool earlier, and after putting on Zhang Yang's shirt, she had kept the wet fabric wrapped around her arm. At that moment, it proved useful. With a rip, she tore the wet shirt in half and handed one piece to Zhang Yang. They both covered their faces with the damp cloth, blocking their eyes, mouths, and noses.
The cool, wet fabric over their eyes alleviated some discomfort.
Zhang Yang and Shi Qing minimized their breathing as much as possible, pressing their bodies into the corner at the bottom of the stairs while keeping their ears alert for any incoming attacks. The thick smoke lasted for about fifteen minutes; despite the wet cloth covering them, they still felt discomfort in their lungs.
The smoke dissipated quickly, as if it had been sucked away all at once. They slowly opened their eyes; however, after being exposed to bright light and smoke, their eyes were now red and swollen.
Crouched under the stairs was indeed uncomfortable. They couldn't help but crawl out and take a few steps forward to stretch their bodies.
Suddenly, there was a clattering sound as a dozen armed individuals rushed down the stairs towards them.
Not to mention that their eyes were already irritated; even without that, in the pitch-black hall, they wouldn't be able to see anything clearly. Hearing the noise, Zhang Yang quickly pulled Shi Qing behind him. In that moment of distraction, he felt a sudden impact on his shoulder.
"Rubber Stick?" Zhang Yang was only wearing a tank top; his exposed shoulder felt the contact from the Rubber Stick. "Looks like Black Death doesn't want anyone dead."
Zhang Yang focused his senses, listening intently. When another stick came swinging towards him, he instinctively grabbed it. With a flick of his wrist, he heard a crack followed by a muffled scream; it seemed that the person wielding the stick had injured their wrist. "Buddy, the tighter you grip it, the worse it gets!" Zhang Yang said as he swiftly moved out of the surround.
These dozen individuals were clearly well-trained and coordinated; they never expected someone could snatch away a Rubber Stick in the dark. From the sounds, it was evident that the person who lost their stick was injured. The group seemed somewhat frustrated and quickly surrounded Zhang Yang's position. No one paid attention to Shi Qing anymore.
Hearing the swift approach of those dozen people surrounding him, Zhang Yang realized they must be wearing Night Vision Goggles!
After surrounding Zhang Yang, they wasted no time launching their attack. Their movements remained coordinated and precise.
Facing a crowd, Zhang Yang wielded the Rubber Stick with no hesitation, putting in considerable effort. Listening to the sounds around him, he used the momentum to locate his targets, striking, hitting, whipping, and swinging. The sounds of cracking and groaning echoed as within moments, most of the group had been hit by the stick, with several already lying on the ground.
Based on the groans, Zhang Yang quickly grabbed the collar of a fallen person and leaped backward. As he landed, he delivered a powerful punch to the person's abdomen, causing them to curl up in pain and gag. Seizing the opportunity, Zhang Yang snatched off the person's Night Vision Goggles and put them on himself.
Now he could see clearly; there were a total of twelve individuals, all wearing helmets and Night Vision Goggles. Eight of them held Rubber Sticks while four carried Blast Shields. They were all dressed in special forces training uniforms but were not wearing bulletproof vests.
"Rubber Stick, I like it! Bring it on!" Zhang Yang shouted as he swung the Rubber Stick from above.
"Charge!" With one person injured and having lost their Night Vision Goggles retreating to the side, the other ten immediately sprang into action. Four individuals with Blast Shields positioned themselves on either side of Zhang Yang while six others wielding Rubber Sticks advanced in a coordinated attack.
"The formation is decent!" Zhang Yang let out a long howl and suddenly kicked off one of the Blast Shields. With a series of loud thuds, the four individuals holding Blast Shields were knocked down. The speed was astonishing; they only realized what had happened after they fell.
Using the force from his kick, Zhang Yang launched himself into the air. At this moment, the remaining six noticed they had missed their target and quickly adjusted their positions, sweeping their Rubber Sticks towards Zhang Yang's lower legs. Unexpectedly, even in mid-air, Zhang Yang was able to spread his legs wide. The Rubber Sticks missed again. Then came another round of sounds as Zhang Yang's Rubber Stick struck each of their helmets in quick succession.
This time, his strikes were powerful enough that all six were sent crashing to the ground.
Suddenly, the lights in the room brightened, and a voice came over the loudspeaker: "Two trainees, report to the third floor for lunch; the first round of training has concluded. The training team will withdraw for rest while the facility team cleans up and awaits further trainees!"
Only then did Zhang Yang notice the sprawled training team members on the ground. After scanning the area, he cupped his hands towards the injured individual: "Sorry about that, brother!" He then headed upstairs with Shi Qing. Upon reaching the third floor, they found signs directing them to a buffet restaurant. There were staff members guiding them inside. The buffet was spacious with a wide variety of dishes focused mainly on chicken, duck, fish, and meat—perfect for replenishing energy.
"Is it safe here?" Zhang Yang asked Shi Qing with a smile. "Yes, it's safe now. Plus, after eating we can rest for a bit; they're dealing with the remaining people and it will likely take some time," Shi Qing replied while filling her plate with food.
The two sat down to eat and had just taken a few bites when Qi Shen and Liang Ming walked in. It seemed that there was a connecting passage between the two buildings on the third floor because of how close they were to the restaurant.
Neither of them had red or swollen eyes; however, Qi Shen had noticeable bruises on his face while Liang Ming limped in pain, gritting his teeth. "Wow, you two got here first," Liang Ming said as he poured himself a large cup of drink and took a big gulp before grabbing a fried chicken leg to munch on.
After they entered the hall, there were no flashbangs or thick smoke, but rubber balls the size of tennis balls flew out in all directions, hitting the two of them quite hard. Eventually, they managed to find a corner to hide and catch their breath for a moment.
Next, they were served with Rubber Sticks. In the chaos, Qi Shen seized an opportunity to dash up the stairs, but Liang Ming was surrounded and took a beating. Once on the stairs, Qi Shen spotted a chance and leaped down, directly knocking someone over. Taking advantage of the situation, he snatched a pair of Night Vision Goggles and during the fight, also grabbed a Blast Shield. With the Night Vision Goggles on and the shield for protection, Qi Shen fought fiercely, breaking three ribs of one person and shattering another's shinbone.
This was already considered quite serious injuries. At this point, the lights came on, signaling the end of their first round of training.
While the four were having dinner, Kuro Sijin and Jungle continued to stand in front of the monitoring screen. From the maze to the grass to the hall, all areas were equipped with advanced surveillance cameras that could capture relatively clear images even in the dark. They had been watching the performance of the four for some time now, but Kuro Sijin remained silent for a long while.
"The Black Team has never seen such a situation since the training camp opened; someone actually got hurt..." Jungle cautiously spoke up.
"Not four. Only two actually inflicted injuries: Qi Shen and Zhang Yang," Kuro Sijin interjected.
"Qi Shen has quite a background. I initially thought he was just a spoiled rich kid, but I didn't expect him to be so resilient and skilled. However, his strikes were too brutal; we used rubber balls and Rubber Sticks to minimize harm, yet he went all out and targeted unprotected weak spots. But the more ruthless he is, the stronger his combat ability will be on the battlefield," Kuro Sijin continued.
"Zhang Yang showed restraint; he even apologized to the injured team member at the end. But he's quite extraordinary—he jumped over a 5-meter wall effortlessly. During the fight, it was hard to see in the footage; in a blink, ten people were taken down," Jungle remarked.
"At first, Luo Huasheng said that Zhang Yang didn't need physical reaction or combat training, which puzzled me. What kind of person is he? He actually wants to pick and choose at Blade Training Camp," Kuro Sijin said. "After seeing him, he just looked like a handsome young man; I thought I would gradually assess his capabilities later. I didn't expect that after saying just one thing to him, I would fall into his trap..."
