"Dean Long, I'm only a freshman; isn't it a bit early to talk about this?" Zhang Yang thought for a moment and said with a smile.
"You are at Heavenly Mechanism Group, and you have the opportunity to get involved with cases. You can start preparing now. Do you know what my specialty is?"
"I know, you're one of the founders of Chinese Penal Theory. The previous criminal law mainly focused on criminology, and your doctoral thesis can be considered a milestone in the study of Chinese Penal Theory."
"Nonsense. My specialty is Research on the Psychology of Death Row Inmates, specifically how to prevent crime. Punishment is not the goal; the ultimate aim is to reduce crime."
"Dean Long, your hairstyle makes it easy for you to blend in with criminals."
"I was forced to have a buzz cut for three years. After I got out, I grew my hair long again." As he spoke about this, Long Shaoxing seemed to fall into deep thought, and ash fell from his cigarette without him noticing.
Zhang Yang thought: Buzz cut? Got out? Did Long Shaoxing go to prison? However, he felt hesitant to ask about such matters.
"Stop guessing; let me tell you." Long Shaoxing snapped back to reality and said seriously.
Long Shaoxing skipped grades in elementary and middle school and was admitted to Huaxia University of Political Science and Law at the age of 14. When he entered university, it was during a nationwide crackdown, which sparked his strong interest in criminal law. Later, he continued his studies in criminal law for his master's degree.
At just 21 years old, Long Shaoxing graduated with a master's degree and enrolled at Yanjing University to study for his doctorate under a leading figure in Criminal Law. He graduated with his doctorate at 24, and once his thesis was published, it caused a sensation nationwide. Later, this doctoral thesis was revised and published as the book Dialectical Penology.
At this point, Long Shaoxing's life was quite fulfilling, filled with aspirations of sailing through the seas. When faced with an invitation to stay on as a faculty member, he surprisingly declined. What were his thoughts? At that time, the business world was booming across the country, and Long Shaoxing had the idea of starting the largest chain bookstore specializing in law. Ultimately, without conducting thorough market research, he hastily plunged into business.
Although he had remarkable achievements in academia, the academic world and the business world are naturally different fields. During a police raid, several manuscripts were found in Long Shaoxing's bookstore. As a result, he was taken away on suspicion of illegal publishing. Due to his reputation in the legal field, Long Shaoxing was not directly imprisoned but handled through bail pending trial.
After this incident, Long Shaoxing considered returning to academia again; however, no university was willing to accept someone on bail pending trial. Disheartened, he became a full-time bookseller. Just when things seemed stable, a bookseller who owed Long Shaoxing money used a batch of books as payment; unexpectedly, these books turned out to be pirated copies. Unbeknownst to him, he faced another investigation.
This time, bail pending trial turned into arrest; Long Shaoxing was charged with speculation and profiteering and was sent to detention.
In detention, Long Shaoxing was shaved bald for three years. However, his experiences there greatly facilitated his research into criminal psychology. There were many death row inmates in detention; because he was a doctoral student from Law School, he became quite well-known there. People often came to him for legal advice; rather than suffering too much hardship, he was treated like a revered figure.
After being detained for three years, Long Shaoxing finally faced judgment: guilty of copyright infringement and sentenced to two years in prison. Since his actual detention period had already exceeded his sentence length, he was effectively free at that time. Nevertheless, he still appealed the verdict; this case shook the legal community in Huaxia. Many people from Law School and lawyers rallied for him until ultimately Long Shaoxing was acquitted.
As Long Shaoxing walked out of the detention center, he held a thick stack of handwritten manuscripts, among which was a book titled "Research on the Psychology of Death Row Inmates." He then returned to his alma mater, Huaxia University of Political Science and Law, where he became a teacher and is now a doctoral advisor. Additionally, Long Shaoxing occasionally takes on litigation cases as a lawyer but is very selective about the cases and clients he accepts.
"Wow, Dean Long's legendary experiences could fill a book," Zhang Yang remarked after listening. He took a cigarette from Long Shaoxing's panda-themed cigarette case and lit it.
"It's strange that I can discuss these experiences with someone your age. Once, while I was in the detention center and had a high fever, a death row inmate I had helped was very anxious and called out loudly for the guards. It made me ponder, what is good and what is evil? A murderer on death row is certainly guilty, but at that moment, he showed a side of kindness," Long Shaoxing said solemnly.
At that moment, Zhang Yang immediately thought of Zhang Xunqiu and Xuan Zhenzi—what is right and what is wrong?
"Whether you plan to take the exam or not, you're always welcome to come to me to discuss issues," Long Shaoxing surprisingly extended his hand. Zhang Yang quickly reciprocated, and their hands clasped tightly together.
As Zhang Yang exited Long Shaoxing's office, he noticed Chen Xiangyu waiting not far from the office door.
"I said, Mu Rujun has left; why have you been inside for so long?" Chen Xiangyu asked. "What did you two talk about?"
Zhang Yang recounted Long Shaoxing's experiences. "His legendary experiences have been talked about for a long time, but not as intricately as you described," Chen Xiangyu said. "It's good that everything is fine. Ruo Xi heard about your situation and was quite anxious; she felt embarrassed to come with me, so I came to check on you."
"Ah?" Zhang Yang felt a little sweet at the thought of Chu Ruoxi being worried about him, but then he remembered Ding Weiwei and felt somewhat guilty.
"I say, do you like her? I think she has her eyes on you," Chen Xiangyu smirked.
"I don't know." In front of Zhang Yang's eyes, the beautiful image of Chu Ruoxi appeared again, leaving him momentarily speechless.
Just then, Zhang Yang's specific phone rang; it was Shen Zhiyu calling.
Zhang Yang glanced at Chen Xiangyu and made a gesture indicating "Heavenly Mechanism Group," then moved toward a quieter area. Chen Xiangyu nodded in understanding and gestured that he would head back first before leaving.
"I say, with the Mid-Autumn Festival plus the weekend, your school has ten days off; why not send out a mission?" Shen Zhiyu said over the phone.
"How much is the subsidy?" Zhang Yang asked.
"I said, you have so much money, is it interesting to talk about money with me all day?"
"Yes."
"Is it interesting?"
"Yes."
"Is it interesting?"
"Hey, I'm just discussing with you, why take it so seriously?" Zhang Yang laughed, "Talking about money hurts feelings. So, let's get to the point, what task is it, and how much is the subsidy?"
"Here we go again! I'm really impressed by you. Alright, ten days, one hundred a day, including food and accommodation." Shen Zhiyu also laughed.
"A thousand dollars is really not much. But what kind of good job includes food and accommodation?"
"Go to the detention center and go undercover."
