"You are very special." Zhang Yang did not answer Slender Eyes' question and exhaled a puff of smoke.
"I'm not special; my name is Ordinary," Slender Eyes replied. "Stop pretending; you are definitely not a suspect."
"Captain Ordinary of the Shanzhou Public Security Detachment, responsible for illegal firearms and flammable explosives, actually caused an explosion," Zhang Yang extinguished his cigarette. "It took the police six months to solve the case, and during this time, you did nothing."
"I never thought they would actually solve it," Ordinary shook his head.
"A public security captain actually killed a solitary girl," Zhang Yang also shook his head.
"Which department are you from?" Ordinary asked.
"How did you make that box? It exploded as soon as it was opened," Zhang Yang countered.
"If you don't speak, our conversation can end permanently," Ordinary continued to look up at the sky.
"Heavenly Mechanism Group," Zhang Yang said quietly, looking down.
"Heavenly Mechanism Group? Does this matter really need them to investigate?" Ordinary's expression finally changed.
"Someone like you, a pawn, naturally doesn't need it. But behind you, with a deputy provincial-level official involved, it's quite normal for the Heavenly Mechanism Group to assist relevant departments in investigating the periphery," Zhang Yang sighed and walked away with his hands behind his back like an old man.
Ordinary was stunned and muttered, "Could it be that they have already found out?"
Six months ago, in Yishan Community of Shanzhou City, a girl received a gift delivered by a stranger. It was winter at the time; the man wore a hat, mask, and gloves. It was unclear what he said to the girl, but she happily accepted a beautifully wrapped box.
Ten minutes later, just as the man walked out of the community gate, a loud explosion was heard from the girl's room. She was killed instantly, and the room caught fire. Firefighters and police quickly responded and found traces of Black Powder along with remnants of a jewelry box and wrapping paper inside the room. No other clues were found. Reviewing community surveillance footage revealed a mysterious man who used street cameras to track him down but soon entered an unmonitored alley, cutting off any leads.
Screenshots from the surveillance footage circulated widely; this tightly wrapped man became known. It proved useful when a Taxi Driver provided information that a similarly dressed man had taken his taxi and accidentally left behind a small piece of chewing gum. The police collected the gum and found fingerprints on it.
It seemed like a lead, but fingerprint analysis is an enormous task. To make matters worse, this man had just obtained a new identity card, which required fingerprint registration. When the detectives discovered that this fingerprint belonged to an insider, they were shocked; it matched the image from the surveillance footage!
Ordinary was surprised when he was arrested. Despite his quick thinking, he claimed that a college student had given him the box and provided an address for him to deliver it to this girl. This explanation had many holes; why would he agree to a stranger's request out of nowhere? And why did he dress so tightly?
However, Ordinary explained that it was cold at the time, so dressing like that was normal. He happened to run into the male college student who impulsively handed him the box, prompting him to take a taxi to deliver it.
Alright, no matter what, Ordinary has a say in this matter. However, being detained is inevitable, so he was sent to the detention center.
This girl was a dancer from Shanhai Art Academy, slender and beautiful, said to have skin softer than half-cooked egg whites and a waist more flexible than a snake. Unfortunately, she ended up as a charred corpse.
Originally, this case should have ended there, but relevant departments outside the police were not idle; they turned their attention to Ordinary's cousin Ping'an.
Ping'an, the mayor of Shanzhou City, is a mayor of a Sub-provincial City, naturally a deputy provincial-level official. Investigators keenly noticed that Ping'an, Mayor of Ping'an City seemed to have a connection with this girl. Moreover, Yishan Community is an upscale neighborhood; how could an average college student afford such an expensive apartment?
And Ordinary is the cousin of Ping'an, Mayor of Ping'an City; he went and killed this girl...
There was a logical deduction: this girl was possibly supported by Ping'an, Mayor of Ping'an City, and might have known some unspeakable secrets about the mayor, leading to her demise. This is similar to causing a car accident; however, Ordinary was so cautious that he ultimately fell because of a piece of chewing gum, which is indeed unfortunate. But deduction is just deduction; without evidence, it won't hold.
After Ordinary was arrested, he was placed in the Special Management Cell, where the fierce and cunning suspects treated him with great respect.
Ordinary is no fool; under these circumstances, it's nearly impossible to extract anything from him. If the deduction holds true and he has shifted the blame onto someone who cannot be traced, he will certainly be waiting for his cousin the mayor's "rescue."
The first step of Zhang Yang's undercover mission was actually quite simple: inform Ordinary that the Heavenly Mechanism Group had begun investigating this case.
So simple, yet it requires ten days?
It does. Because telling Ordinary is just the first step.
With the deduction in place, relevant departments have naturally started investigating Ping'an, Mayor of Ping'an City, and they are not without gains. Various signs indicate that Ping'an, Mayor of Ping'an City seems to have sensed some unrest; he might be about to "eliminate his kin for righteousness."
Before Ping'an, Mayor of Ping'an City takes action to "eliminate his kin," informing his cousin Ordinary that the Heavenly Mechanism Group has intervened while simultaneously preventing this act could very well win over Ordinary. If they can reach this point, taking down Ping'an and eliminating corruption would be an easy task.
The second step of Zhang Yang's mission is to send in people to eliminate kin while protecting Ordinary.
Perhaps it won't even take ten days. Because on the night that Zhang Yang communicated with Ping'an, two new individuals entered the Special Management Cell.
Both were of medium build with identical bald heads and prominent temples; they were both martial artists. One had a Long Face, and the other had a Square Face. When they entered, their expressions were cold. Since the previous leader Big Brother and three loyal followers had been taken to the hospital, two adjacent lower bunks were empty; Long Face and Square Face directly sat on the beds.
"Boss, more newcomers have arrived." After the guards left, Slim Monkey approached Zhang Yang's bed and said. Ever since Big Brother was taken away, Zhang Yang had seemingly become the leader of the Special Management Cell.
"Go ahead and ask," Zhang Yang said.
"Hey, newcomer, what did you do to end up here?" the Thin Monkey stepped forward and asked.
"Get lost..." Square Face just mouthed the words, but before he could speak, Long Face interrupted, "You're from the streets, right? You used to hang out with Big Brother Jun. Where's Big Brother Jun?"
"Huh?" The Thin Monkey was taken aback, thinking that since Big Brother Jun wasn't around, there was no way to verify it. He turned to look at Zhang Yang, who nodded at the two.
"Since you're with Big Brother Jun, you should rest up," the Thin Monkey said before returning to his bunk.
Ordinary, who was sleeping on the upper bunk, was filled with thoughts but remained calm as still water.
Long Face and Square Face scanned the crowd back and forth, eventually locking their gazes on two individuals. Square Face focused on Ordinary while Long Face fixed his eyes on Zhang Yang. Then, Square Face signaled Long Face with a glance towards Ordinary's direction; Long Face nodded and glanced at Zhang Yang's position.
The two exchanged another look before lying down on their beds.
As night deepened, the cell became cool and quiet.
