"I only said I would return to Haizhou, not that I would help you," Zhang Yang said to Liu Gang.
"I'll take you back. If you get scared, you'll agree to help me," Liu Gang replied.
The off-road vehicle, resembling a luxury SUV but without a logo, hit the highway and immediately began to speed, overtaking cars as if they were dumplings. In no time, the speed had exceeded two hundred miles per hour. At first, Zhang Yang was praising Liu Gang's driving skills, but as the speed seemed to increase further, Liu Gang appeared somewhat preoccupied, glancing left and right. Zhang Yang started to feel anxious.
"I say, if you're in a hurry to get to Haizhou, don't crash me," Zhang Yang grabbed the handle above the door. "At this speed, even escaping would be difficult if we crash."
"Oh," Liu Gang seemed to snap out of his thoughts. With his skills, driving at such a speed was mostly due to inertia. After hearing Zhang Yang's reminder, he naturally slowed down.
Not long after the speed decreased, a red Aston Martin caught up and matched the pace of the SUV.
The window rolled down, revealing a man with sunglasses and slicked-back hair. "Buddy, nice driving! There were so many cars earlier that I couldn't catch up with you. How about a race?"
Liu Gang rolled down his window, revealing a slightly smug smile on his rugged face. He then turned to Zhang Yang and said, "Hold on tight; I'll shake him off so he stops bothering us." With that, the SUV roared ahead.
"Damn!" shouted the man in sunglasses as he followed suit.
The SUV's speed quickly surged again, pulling away from the Aston Martin until finally, the man could no longer see even a trace of it. After losing sight of the SUV completely, the Aston Martin surprisingly pulled over onto the emergency lane. The man got out, removed his sunglasses, and gasped in disbelief as he muttered to himself, "It has the shell of a luxury SUV but sounds like a Porsche engine; plus it has such a ridiculous temporary license plate. What kind of person is driving that?"
Liu Gang exited the highway and Zhang Yang suddenly asked, "What exactly is your personal business? If it's convenient now, let's get it done."
"Alright, I'll take you to meet someone," Liu Gang nodded.
The car arrived at a courtyard entrance in North District of Haizhou City. Many houses in the area had already been vacated; it turned out this was a residential area awaiting demolition.
"Erhu!" Liu Gang knocked on the door. After a while, eyes flickered through the gap before the door finally opened. A sturdy man stepped out.
"You called me early this morning; what's going on?" Liu Gang walked straight into the courtyard while saying to Erhu, "Buddy, this is Zhang Yang."
"Something happened last night," Erhu followed them into the courtyard and then closed the gate behind them. The courtyard had three rooms in both the main house and side rooms; it was small with a grape trellis in the middle and a square table with small stools underneath. Liu Gang and Zhang Yang sat down while Erhu picked up a teapot and poured tea into two large cups.
"I wasn't home yesterday; my wife was alone. When I returned this morning, she cried upon seeing me and said she had been wrapped up with blankets and thrown into a graveyard on the outskirts last night. Fortunately, there was a fire nearby; when the fire truck passed by and heard her cries for help, they brought her back," Erhu explained.
"Erhu is my brother. This area is going to be demolished, but Erhu disagrees with the conditions given by the developer." Liu Gang introduced Zhang Yang succinctly.
"It must be the developer's doing. This tactic is quite ruthless and has innovated the traditional intimidation methods." Zhang Yang pulled out a cigarette and offered one to Erhu. Erhu hesitated for a moment but accepted it. However, he clearly seemed uncomfortable with Zhang Yang's way of expressing himself, taking the cigarette and lowering his head to smoke quietly.
"I'm Zhang Yang, no need for pleasantries. Who's behind the demolition in North District Ranma Alley?" Zhang Yang had already connected the call to Black Wolf Han Shenghui.
"Ranma Alley? Don't mention it. I originally wanted to acquire this land, but it was taken by Deputy Mayor Wu Zhongxin's brother-in-law. I heard they plan to build a pharmaceutical base after the demolition." Upon hearing it was Zhang Yang, Han Shenghui spoke directly without hesitation.
"What's his brother-in-law's background?"
"Wu Zhongxin's wife is named Kang Min, and his brother-in-law is Kang Ning. He used to be a drug dealer, but now he's quite influential."
"Kang Min? Why doesn't Wu Zhongxin go by Ma Dayuan? Damn it. What kind of people did Kang Ning recruit for the demolition?"
"I heard he brought someone in from the northern suburbs, but there's a leader named Big Head Yang. He's quite shady and has a lot of tricks up his sleeve."
"Just returned to Haizhou. A buddy of mine lives in this area; their offer is low, and they don't want to relocate. Last night, his wife was thrown into a graveyard."
"Wait for me; I'll come find you."
Twenty minutes later, a BMW X6 and an Audi Q7 stopped at the entrance of Erhu Courtyard. Two cars, four people; driving the BMW X6 was Azheng, while getting out of the Audi Q7 were Nickname and Great Victory.
Upon entering, all four said in unison: "Brother Yang."
The Seeking Society is not what it used to be. Although Han Shenghui came with few people, the presence of all four was clearly that of leaders. Seeing this, Erhu trembled slightly, immediately standing up and bringing out four small stools from inside, inviting the brothers to sit.
Liu Gang glanced at Zhang Yang, greeting the four: "Nice to meet you." He thought to himself that this kid is impressive; these guys are clearly prominent figures in Haizhou.
After some brief introductions among everyone, Han Shenghui said: "I've never liked Big Head Yang, but with Kang Ning having support from Wu Zhongxin and Wu Liangdong, we had to hold back for a while since Wu Liangdong kept trying to cause trouble for us at the Seeking Society. By the way, I heard that Wu Liangdong went to the Provincial Department?"
"He's on loan for assistance," replied Zhang Yang. "Erhu, being local, naturally doesn't want any trouble. I'm thinking if we could negotiate; if we reach an agreement, we can take the money and leave cleanly." He then glanced at Erhu.
"Yes, yes." Erhu interjected, "In this area, based on land prices, it should be at least two thousand per square meter. My yard is a total of 280 square meters, so just the land alone is over 500,000; if we count the house at 4,000 per square meter for over 180 square meters, that's more than 700,000. I can't ask for too much; I'm just hoping to get a total of 1.2 million, but they won't agree."
"What are they offering?" Han Shenghui asked.
"They said they could round it up to 770,000. Is there such a thing as rounding up like that?" Erhu's expression turned quite frustrated. "Now they don't dare to forcibly demolish it or openly come to cause trouble. Every time they come to negotiate, it's a large group of people, and just seeing them is intimidating. Plus, they resort to underhanded tactics; no one can stand that."
"If you want 1.5 million for this house, that's not too much. The property prices in this area have skyrocketed, and your house is street-facing," Han Shenghui said.
"Can we talk to someone named Kang Ning?" Liu Gang suddenly suggested.
Just then, there was a loud knocking at the door. "They're here again!" Erhu said as he walked straight to the door. With so many people backing him up, he seemed much more confident.
He opened the door to reveal a short, stout man with a large head and a layer of stubble on his face entering. Behind him followed a dozen burly men all dressed in short-sleeved white shirts and black trousers.
The stout man wore a black and white checkered T-shirt and had a string of Bodhi beads around his neck. A large raw amber pendant hung awkwardly at the back of his neck, and he was fiddling with a large string of sea yellow beads in his hand as he walked forward.
"This person is Big Head Yang," Han Shenghui quietly informed Zhang Yang.
