He Lie had a group of "brothers," some of whom were just like him, aimlessly wandering, while others were students. Among them, the three most willing to be with He Lie were Ali, Changzi, and Monkey. All three were 16 years old; Ali and Changzi had dropped out of school and were unemployed, while Monkey was a high school student.
When they didn't have enough money to spend, what did they do? The group of kids decided to rob someone. They had even prepared steel pipes for this purpose. Late last night, they hailed a taxi and drove around looking for solitary citizens. Fearing that their victims might resist, they planned to beat them up first before robbing them. However, when they encountered someone and were about to strike with the steel pipe, a patrol car suddenly appeared, scaring them away.
They even discussed leaving a message after the robbery: "Think about who you have offended recently?" Their intention was to create confusion and reduce the likelihood of being reported. As luck would have it, during their second attempt, they ran into Zhang Yang.
"Big brother, your skills are amazing! Can I learn martial arts from you?" He Lie extinguished his cigarette and mustered his courage to ask.
Zhang Yang smiled and said, "I can teach you, but you need to go back to school first!"
He Lie scratched his head in distress. "Big brother, please spare me! School feels like prison; it's so uncomfortable. I get dizzy just looking at books."
"You've never been to prison; how do you know it's uncomfortable? If you don't want to go back to school, then let's not talk about it," Zhang Yang replied as he stood up to leave.
"Wait! Big brother, I'll listen to you! Tomorrow I'll talk to my parents about going back to school," He Lie grabbed Zhang Yang's sleeve.
"Alright, you should be in the third year of middle school now. Go back and prepare for high school entrance exams; I'll start teaching you then!" Zhang Yang said with a smile. "Do you have a phone?"
"I do."
"Let's exchange numbers. It's late; hurry back home and don't sleep outside anymore. Stay with your parents," Zhang Yang gently tapped He Lie on the forehead.
Watching He Lie leave, Zhang Yang couldn't help but smile wryly: if it weren't for the strange circumstances surrounding him due to the possession by Strange Soul, would he have ended up like He Lie, becoming a street thug?
Going to school is fundamentally a process of understanding and planning; the more knowledge one has, the clearer their understanding of the world becomes. How many students truly grasp this? Most study merely to get into college or find jobs, acquiring fragmented content and exam techniques rather than genuine systematic knowledge.
Seeing He Lie promise him, Zhang Yang suddenly felt an indescribable sense of relief—this feeling was more satisfying than beating up a bad guy.
That night, Zhang Yang slept soundly.
The next morning, there was a public class, but Zhang Yang decided not to attend and instead visit Xiao Hansheng. This time, Zhang Yang decided to reveal his identity, claiming he had received reports about Xiao Hansheng's Kangbao Group being involved in organized crime and bribery. He wanted to observe Xiao Hansheng's reaction while also sending a warning. Zhang Yang changed into a fitted black suit, paired with a dark striped shirt and polished leather shoes. With this new look, he indeed resembled a workplace elite.
Kangbao Group was located in the Guanghui Building in Shanzhou City's CBD, occupying three floors. The company was most famous for its physical product: mattresses. Kangbao Mattress claimed to incorporate various therapeutic functions, treating high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, insomnia, and menstrual irregularities—essentially a cure-all. Its loyal customers were mostly middle-aged and elderly women. An entry-level mattress sold for around ten thousand yuan, while the highest-end custom mattresses could reach over a hundred thousand yuan and were often out of stock.
Some people believed in it; how could you treat them?
Another major business of Kangbao Group was logistics; they essentially monopolized the transportation lines from Shanzhou to various prefecture-level cities in Shanhai Province. In recent years, Kangbao Group had also ventured into real estate and was thriving.
Zhang Yang arrived at the large glass door of Kangbao Group on the 18th floor of the Guanghui Building. A receptionist in an office lady outfit immediately stood up and politely asked:
"Hello, sir. Who are you looking for? Do you have an appointment?"
"Hello, I don't have an appointment. I'm a friend of Mr. Xiao Hansheng. My name is Zhang Yang. Could you please pass on my message?"
"Please wait a moment." The receptionist skillfully dialed an internal line: "Hello, Mr. Yue, this is Receptionist Wang. There is a Mr. Zhang Yang here who claims to be a friend of Mr. Xiao. Can you report this to Mr. Xiao?"
"Do you have any brains? Would Mr. Xiao's friend come without an appointment? Don't waste time with random people!" The voice on the other end belonged to Board Secretary Yue Ling, known as Mr. Yue within the company. The voice was loud enough for Zhang Yang to hear clearly while standing nearby; Receptionist Wang glanced awkwardly at Zhang Yang.
Zhang Yang smiled slightly and snatched the phone from her hand before she could react. He was already speaking with Yue Ling: "Is this Mr. Yue? Tell Xiao Hansheng that I am Zhang Yang, and I will wait here for five minutes. If I'm not allowed in, the consequences are on you!" With that, he hung up with a decisive click.
Receptionist Wang stuck out her tongue and pointed to the sofa beside the entrance: "Mr. Zhang, please wait here."
"Thank you." Zhang Yang nodded and sat down.
After a while, the phone rang. Xiao Wang answered it and, upon hearing Yue Ling's instructions, immediately handed the phone to Zhang Yang. "Mr. Zhang, I'm sorry, I just checked with Mr. Xiao. He is currently meeting with a very important guest. Would you be able to wait a little longer? Xiao Wang will take you to the lounge; would that be alright?"
"Sure," Zhang Yang replied simply. Then, Xiao Wang led Zhang Yang through the large glass door and into a lounge that contained four sets of sofas and coffee tables. After they sat down, Yue Ling entered with a cup of coffee. Upon seeing Zhang Yang, she paused for a moment and thought to herself, "So young, yet so confident."
Zhang Yang took a moment to observe Yue Ling. She was quite attractive, dressed in a dark professional suit with a light yellow shirt underneath, black stockings, and pointed high heels. She had a slender figure and a flat chest.
"Mr. Zhang, please have some coffee. Mr. Xiao instructed me to bring you to his office as soon as he finishes meeting," Yue Ling said while pointing towards the door across the room, which prominently displayed the nameplate "Chairman's Office."
About fifteen minutes later, the door to the Chairman's Office opened, and Yue Ling immediately rushed out of the lounge without even closing the door behind her.
Through the half-open door, Zhang Yang saw a tall professional woman emerge. She wore a fitted black blazer on top and black trousers below, with a loose gray turtleneck underneath. Her hair was neatly styled in an updo. She wore light makeup that enhanced her delicate features with subtle eyeshadow and soft pink lip gloss. Beside her was a capable-looking female assistant.
Xiao Hansheng smiled as he shook hands in farewell, seemingly losing some of his imposing presence. Then, Yue Ling guided the woman and her assistant toward the exit. The woman exuded an air of elegance and walked lightly.
This cold yet noble demeanor stirred something in Zhang Yang's heart as he thought: "She looks so familiar; it's like I've seen her just recently..."
Could it be her?! Zhang Yang slapped his thigh: "With her glasses off and a different hairstyle, she has changed so much!"
