"Let's follow him tonight. If there are no new leads, we'll hand over the evidence of the dog gambling to the relevant authorities," Zhang Yang said to Liu Gang after thinking for a moment. Liu Gang nodded in agreement.
When they left the dog racing venue, Tang Yi appeared to be in a good mood and casually tossed a bundle of cash to the driver. The Cruze left town and returned to the temporary parking lot. Then, the driver and Tang Yi got out and re-entered the Passat, driving away.
Liu Gang quickly retrieved the seedling listening device from the Cruze and drove the Silver Jetta to catch up with the Passat. "Damn, with your skills at opening car doors, you could steal cars too," Zhang Yang teased.
"As long as it's related to cars, there's nothing I don't excel at," Liu Gang said proudly. "After work, Tang Yi will probably head home. He lives in Meihu Community. We'll follow him to his doorstep, and once he’s home, we can discuss our next steps."
"You've done your homework well," Zhang Yang thought; Liu Gang was indeed a seasoned investigator.
However, to their surprise, when Tang Yi came out of the Land Bureau, he didn't get into a car but walked out the door and hailed a taxi by the roadside.
"What the hell? Why take a taxi when there's a bus?" Liu Gang remarked. "A corrupt official like him wouldn't save money like this; he's probably off doing something more secretive." Liu Gang then drove after the taxi.
Sure enough, the taxi did not go to Meihu Community but instead pulled up in front of a place called Xingju Community. Liu Gang followed the taxi inside.
After getting out of the taxi, Tang Yi walked up to a small high-rise building and rang the intercom. Shortly after, the door opened. Liu Gang quickly followed him in. Coincidentally, just as Tang Yi entered, another resident used a key to open their door, allowing Liu Gang to slip in effortlessly.
Zhang Yang waited outside.
Tang Yi, Liu Gang, and that resident all got into the same elevator. Seeing that Tang Yi pressed for the 25th floor, Liu Gang hurriedly pressed for the 24th floor.
Once they reached the 24th floor, Liu Gang quickly exited the elevator and dashed up the stairs. Just as he reached the stairwell door, he saw Tang Yi exit the elevator and walk up to door 2503. He rang the doorbell, and once it opened, Tang Yi swiftly slipped inside.
Liu Gang approached the door and listened intently for a few minutes before heading back down to call Zhang Yang. When Zhang Yang entered the building, Liu Gang pulled him aside. "He went into 2503. From his demeanor, he seems sneaky; either he's with a mistress or indulging in some vice."
"He’s quite busy; it’s been a whole day of eating, drinking, and having fun," Zhang Yang said. "If he’s not corrupt, I won’t believe it."
"I think we should just go in after a few minutes. I just listened to the conversation on the bug; he talked to the driver about some things. At the very least, it can serve as direct evidence to pin down the gambling issue," Liu Gang said, pulling out two police badges and tossing one to Zhang Yang.
"What the hell, when did you get this for me?" Zhang Yang asked.
"Who said I got it for you? You're an intern; you only have the work ID from Heavenly Mechanism Group. Only full-time employees can apply for various necessary documents based on work needs. Before coming out today, I mentioned it to Manager Shen and borrowed his ID for use," Liu Gang replied.
After a brief discussion, they went upstairs together and rang the doorbell of 2503.
"Who is it?" After a while, a woman's overly sweet voice came through the peephole. Liu Gang held up his police badge in front of the peephole and shouted, "We're checking for transient populations; please open the door and cooperate!"
"Wait a moment, I'm taking a shower," the woman replied, and there was a flurry of sounds from inside, followed by rustling as she got dressed.
About five minutes later, the door opened but was still secured with a chain. A charming young woman's face appeared: "Officer, please show me your ID; I need to verify it first. It's just me at home, safety first."
Liu Gang didn't hesitate and handed over his police badge. After she took it inside, she eventually unlatched the chain.
Once Zhang Yang and Liu Gang entered, they saw Tang Yi sitting neatly on the sofa while the seductive woman was in pajamas, her hair slicked back tightly into a bun, resembling an old-fashioned style.
"This is my cousin; he's just visiting," the seductive woman said, pointing at Tang Yi.
Liu Gang smiled and noticed that Tang Yi was holding the police badge. "Officer Liu, the badge is real, but you're a criminal investigator. Checking transient populations doesn't seem to fall under your jurisdiction," Tang Yi remarked as he placed the badge on the coffee table in front of him.
"Director Tang, the key point is that this lady has had an improper relationship with you as a transient individual, and you are suspected of illegal activities. Don't you think it's appropriate for criminal investigators to be involved?" Liu Gang's expression turned serious.
The mention of "Director Tang" startled both Tang Yi and the seductive woman. "Chen Boss, you..." The woman exclaimed in surprise but quickly covered her mouth upon realizing her slip of tongue.
"Chen Boss? Isn't he your cousin?" Zhang Yang surveyed the room; both bedroom doors were tightly closed, and the living room looked like any ordinary home.
"You've got the wrong person; my last name is Chen, and she is indeed my cousin." Tang Yi's heart raced, but he maintained his composure on the surface.
"Enough, Director Tang. Are you part of the Animal Research Association? We've followed you all the way here, and you're still pretending?" Zhang Yang walked directly to the door of a bedroom, ready to push it open.
"Who are you calling a chicken? What do you want to do?" The Seductive Woman rushed forward to block Zhang Yang as he attempted to enter the bedroom.
"You better not move, or you'll be charged with obstructing official duties. Go back and sit down!" Liu Gang shouted sternly, his face exuding authority. The Seductive Woman hesitated but quietly sat down on the sofa.
"What the hell!" Zhang Yang was stunned when he opened the bedroom door.
The bedroom was enormous; it appeared to be two south-facing rooms combined into one, decorated like a royal palace. On one wall hung a large framed sign that read "Shou Kang Palace." The bed was an intricately carved king-sized bed with golden curtains, and the bedding was embroidered with dragons and phoenixes. A vibrant red carpet covered the floor, and an antique table emitted the fragrance of sandalwood.
Next to the incense burner was a wooden tray containing eight small wooden plaques. When flipped over, they revealed engraved names filled with red paint: Queen, Consort Xi, Cao Guiren, An Da Ying...
"Damn it, this guy is here looking for someone to serve him," Zhang Yang muttered under his breath as he approached a massive wardrobe. He opened it to find numerous ancient garments categorized inside, primarily from the Qing Dynasty. As he rummaged through them, he even discovered a Rainbow Feathered Dress from the Tang Dynasty.
"Director Tang, whose plaque did you flip today?" Zhang Yang stepped out of the room and asked with a grin.
