"You are all smart people, I think we should have a good talk," Zhang Yang said slowly after taking a sip of tea.
"What is there to talk about?" Wings replied. Clearly, he was the leader of the Winged Fire Serpent.
Zhang Yang remained silent but glanced at Mars's fingers. At that moment, Mars had three fingers severed by Zhang Yang and was now wearing gloves.
Mars also looked at Zhang Yang. He seemed to harbor little resentment; as an assassin, he had experienced life and death many times. Although the injury caused a slight disability, it was within the range of what he could psychologically bear.
"It's worth discussing," Zhang Yang said, retracting his gaze and looking at Wings.
"The matter with Man Cheng Chuan is already in the past. This time we will let it go and no longer pursue that person named Han. From now on, we won't interfere with each other. Is that what you want to discuss?"
"No, what is there to talk about? If it were just for this, I might as well kill you all," Zhang Yang replied.
This statement sent a chill down the spines of the three of them; they had no doubt that Zhang Yang had that capability.
"Then what do you want to discuss?" Wings asked.
"How much would it cost to kill Xiao Hansheng?" Zhang Yang lit a cigarette. Upon hearing this, Han Shenghui and Azheng were both taken aback.
Wings fell silent for a moment before suddenly saying, "To be honest, whether this is a trap set by Xiao Hansheng is still up for debate. Even if it is, it's not something that can be discussed in terms of money." After hearing this, Zhang Yang remained silent, waiting for more information.
Sure enough, Wings continued, "This person is related to my master. Let me be honest with you; the one who came to kill your friend was also contacted through my master by Xiao Hansheng. Otherwise, I would have completely believed it was his trap."
"Your master wouldn't be Toothless, would he?" Zhang Yang asked bluntly.
"You know?!"
"Brother, can we talk privately?" Zhang Yang took a deep breath. Upon hearing this, Han Shenghui and Azheng understood that the matter was too deep; Zhang Yang's extraordinary skills must have some special origin, and his master's background was likely quite unusual as well. It was naturally better for them to know as little as possible about such matters. They immediately stood up to leave.
Although Mars and Fragrant Serpent partnered with Wings and regarded him as their leader, they knew nothing about his master. Wings had always kept silent about his sect; they only knew that Wings' master lived in seclusion in the Southwest Wuliang Mountain and was an extraordinary person.
Wings pondered for a moment and said, "Since you can recognize Ethereal Iron Feather, it seems you have some connections; I can tell you a bit." As soon as he finished speaking, Mars and Fragrant Serpent started to leave again. "You are all my brothers and sisters who have been through life and death together; let's listen together," Wings waved his hand, and Mars and Fragrant Serpent sat back down.
"Toothless is from Dao Gate; your master must also be from Dao Gate," Zhang Yang said.
"Have you met my master?" Wings asked.
"Not only have I seen him, but we've also crossed paths," Zhang Yang said calmly.
Wings gasped. He was well aware of his master Toothless's skills, and the fact that Zhang Yang managed to escape after confronting him surprised him greatly. In reality, when Toothless took on this job, he hadn't discussed it with Wings in person but had communicated through QQ. Toothless Old Daoist appeared and disappeared without a trace, using a phone that only had an internet card, making QQ his only means of contact.
It turned out that after Zhang Yang broke through the formation and fell off the cliff, Toothless was injured internally due to the formation being destroyed and went to find a place to recuperate. However, since he had accepted Xiao Hansheng's payment, he still explained the situation to Xiao Hansheng, but he told him that Zhang Yang had been knocked off the cliff and his fate was uncertain. Then, Xiao Hansheng asked if it was possible to deal with Han Shenghui as well.
Toothless needed to recover from his injuries, so he declined by saying he had other important matters and passed the job on to his nephew Wings.
"Is your master an old lady from Southwest Wuliang Mountain?" Zhang Yang asked again. He mentioned this because during their time at Blade Training Camp, instructor Kuro Sijin had mentioned an attack on the Red Fox Assault Team in Southwest Wuliang Mountain, describing the assailant as an old lady.
Wings was taken aback repeatedly, unable to close his mouth. Originally, it was already hard to believe that someone as young as Zhang Yang possessed such extraordinary skills; now he even knew about his reclusive master's situation!
"Toothless calls himself Rat, and among the Twelve Earthly Branches, he is the most respected. Your master must be the Rooster from the Twelve Earthly Branches since she uses Ethereal Iron Feather from the Southwest Peacock Clan," Zhang Yang continued without pause. In fact, some of this was just his speculation.
"Since you already know so much, what else is there to ask? My master is indeed the Rooster of Iron Feathers," Wings replied.
"No wonder you are called Wings; it must be a name given to you by your master. Toothless and your master's methods are somewhat sinister; they don't seem like ordinary Dao Gate practitioners. Could they be remnants of the lost teachings of Jie Jiao?" Zhang Yang continued to inquire. He was naturally well-versed in history prior to the Tang Dynasty.
The teachings of Chan Jiao, Daoism, and Jie Jiao all originated from the same source; their leaders were Yuanshi Tianzun, Taishang Laojun, and Tongtian Jiaozhu—figures who appeared in "Investiture of the Gods." Jie Jiao had many sinister practices, but it couldn't be ruled out that there were still scattered hidden lineages after its decline.
"I don't know about that," Wings shook his head.
"I suppose your master along with her disciples totals twelve?" Zhang Yang asked.
"My ancestor was a master from the Qing Dynasty who practiced Heavenly Dry Technique. However, to achieve Reincarnation Through Heaven's effects, one naturally needs Earthly Branch Techniques. Thus, she took in twelve disciples. The disciples were all gathered during the Republic Era, but my ancestor mysteriously disappeared afterward. The remaining twelve disciples scattered into society; today they are all over a hundred years old. My master has no idea how many are still alive. If I didn't often go out and my uncle didn't frequently venture out either—by chance encountering Ethereal Iron Feather—they wouldn't have been able to connect at all," Wings explained.
"But what I see you using is not Daoist techniques but martial arts," Zhang Yang remarked in surprise.
"My master never taught me Daoist techniques; she only passed down martial arts and some breathing techniques—there is some internal power involved," Wings said openly now that he had started talking.
"It seems that disguise techniques are your master's specialty," Zhang Yang added.
"Yes, Mars and Fragrant Serpent's Disguise Technique is something I taught. My master said this skill can be passed on," Wings replied.
As they chatted back and forth, it turned into a casual conversation. Wings usually didn't talk much but seemed to have opened up now. They drank and ate while discussing matters related to the Twelve Earthly Branches and then shifted to topics about Daoism. The Winged Fire Serpent assassination group had quite a reputation, yet several members admired Zhang Yang's abilities. Unable to mention Strange Soul's matters, Zhang Yang could only boast about learning Daoist techniques from a high-level relative.
"Let's forget about this job; give me some face since we’ll be friends from now on." As their conversation became more relaxed, Zhang Yang raised his glass with one hand while holding a cigarette with the other and laughed heartily.
"Alright. Give me face for my master, and I'll refund the money to the one surnamed Xiao. This matter ends here," Wings said.
"Aren't you afraid your master will come looking for you later?" Zhang Yang asked again.
"Business is business; it just didn't work out. There's no need for any later issues," Wings replied with a smile.
"Can I see your true selves?"
"No, find a chance in the future."
"How do we contact each other later?"
"QQ or WeChat works."
"What the hell, you have Wangwang too?"
"Of course, I need it for online shopping."
