"Mm?" Zhang Yang's interest was piqued.
"I suggest we split this book into three parts. You take the section on Heavenly Dry Technique, I'll take the Earthly Branch Techniques, and for the last chapter on the Path of Fusion, let's both memorize it and then burn it. This way, it's safe and saves effort."
Zhang Yang couldn't help but admire Yu Qingwei's idea.
Once they decided to do it, they got right to work. After the Fusion of Extraordinary Souls, Zhang Yang's memory was impressive, and Yu Qingwei was no slouch either. The two took turns reciting until they confirmed everything was correct, then burned the last chapter.
They then parted ways, agreeing to meet again when they had made progress.
"Making progress" was such a vague concept; it could be in three to five days or one to two years, and both needed to have made progress for it to count. They both understood this well and shared a knowing smile.
Before they knew it, the Spring Festival arrived. Zhang Yang sat alone at home, looking at the pile of shattered Black Pottery fragments. What a strange twist of fate it had been; it changed his life and the world connected to him.
A year ago, he had been alone as a Campus Delinquent, bullying others while being bullied himself. A year later, although he had many impressive friends, he still spent the New Year alone. In just one short year, despite being only 19 years old, he had experienced things most people never would in a lifetime.
Sometimes Zhang Yang even wondered what he would be doing now if he hadn't accidentally broken that Black Pottery Idol.
With much to say or nothing at all, the winter break quickly passed. Zhang Yang and Yu Qingwei tacitly avoided contacting each other; clearly, those few thin sheets of paper were not easy to study.
After school resumed, Chu Ruoxi found Zhang Yang right away.
"Why do I feel like you've been through a lot?" Chu Ruoxi said cheerfully, sensing that Zhang Yang seemed quite different.
"I broke up with Ding Weiwei." As they walked by Shanshui Lake, Zhang Yang spoke casually. They had originally planned to go out for a meal but ended up walking by the lake without mentioning food at all.
"Ah?" Chu Ruoxi was surprised but also faintly excited. "Who suggested it?"
"She did," Zhang Yang replied in a low voice.
"What do you think?" Chu Ruoxi asked.
"I have let her down, and I have let you down too," Zhang Yang said, glancing at the cold surface of the lake, speaking softly.
"You haven't let me down. It's all in the past. Moving forward, will you treat me well?" Chu Ruoxi suddenly asked.
This caught Zhang Yang off guard. He didn't expect that Chu Ruoxi would not be affected by this matter. Seeing that Zhang Yang remained silent, Chu Ruoxi smiled and said, "Some things need time to digest. Let's go eat!"
Just then, Zhang Yang's phone suddenly rang. He answered it and saw that it was Hou Long calling.
"Zhang Yang, Xiao Hansheng and an old Taoist went to Yanjing to do something against your girlfriend..." Hou Long's voice was very low.
"What?" Zhang Yang's head buzzed. "I'm going to Yanjing right now!"
"Don't rush. Meet me first, and I'll explain everything before you take action," Hou Long said.
Zhang Yang briefly explained the situation to Chu Ruoxi, who was immediately stunned and quickly expressed her desire to go along. After a moment of hesitation, Zhang Yang advised her not to go; firstly, it was dangerous, and secondly, it wouldn't be appropriate for her to be involved.
Although Chu Ruoxi was inexperienced, she understood after some thought that it wouldn't be suitable for her to go. She didn't want to complicate things for Zhang Yang either. So she advised him to be careful and decided not to go. However, in her heart, she was secretly contemplating whether to seek help from her father, Chu Hongshi.
Zhang Yang and Hou Long quickly met at a tea house.
"Right now, Xiao Hansheng is very uneasy about me; basically, I'm just doing some ordinary security work," Hou Long said. He had heard this news by chance. After all, having been in Kangbao Group for so many years, some people were still not very guarded around him, and many did not know about his relationship with Zhang Yang.
"Xiao Hansheng brought four of his most trusted subordinates. I heard he went with an Old Taoist, meaning they have captured Ding Weiwei to deal with you," Hou Long continued.
Before meeting with Hou Long, Zhang Yang had already called Ding Weiwei, but her phone was off. When he called her dormitory, her roommate said she had gone out for a meal and hadn't returned yet, which made him very anxious.
"If I had known, I would have dealt with that old Taoist back then!" Zhang Yang thought bitterly. After understanding the whole situation from Hou Long, he packed up and headed straight to the airport. Fortunately, there was still a flight to Yanjing at 11 PM that night with available tickets. While waiting at the airport, Zhang Yang called Ding Weiwei's dormitory again, but was told she still hadn't come back.
Then, Zhang Yang called Yu Qingwei, who said he would head to Yanjing immediately. After thinking it over, Zhang Yang agreed.
By the time he arrived in Yanjing, it was already early morning. After getting off the plane, Zhang Yang called Ding Weiwei's dormitory for the third time. This time, the girl who answered sounded sleepy and became impatient upon hearing he was looking for Ding Weiwei. "If you need something, call her cell phone; she hasn't come back!" With that, she hung up. However, Ding Weiwei's phone remained off.
Once in Yanjing, Zhang Yang checked into a hotel near Huaxia National University and then informed Yu Qingwei of the address.
In his room, Zhang Yang was restless. Around 5 AM, his phone rang again. He initially thought it was Yu Qingwei calling but was surprised to see an unfamiliar number.
"Zhang Yang?"
"This is him."
"Listen carefully; your girlfriend is in our hands. Be honest and follow our instructions; get to Yanjing immediately." After saying that, the caller hung up.
Before long, Zhang Yang received a multimedia message on his phone. Ding Weiwei was tied to a chair, her mouth taped with transparent tape, her eyes wide open and filled with anger.
"Damn it!" Zhang Yang kicked a chair in the room, shattering it.
Less than a minute later, there was a sudden knock on the door. Zhang Yang looked at the broken chair, took out his wallet from his pocket, thinking it must be someone from the hotel checking on the noise. When he opened the door, however, it was Yu Qingwei.
"No more mercy," Yu Qingwei said as she swiftly entered the room and closed the door behind her. "I've arranged for my sister to stay with a distant relative for now."
Zhang Yang felt a bit awkward; if he hadn't let Toothless go, this wouldn't have happened. Clearly, upon hearing about his girlfriend's troubles, Yu Qingwei immediately began to worry about her sister's safety and made proper arrangements.
"I have made some progress with Earthly Branch Techniques. The key to these techniques is to utilize everything around us to set up formations and break them, which can be immensely powerful," Yu Qingwei said, noticing Zhang Yang's discomfort and changing the subject.
Upon hearing this, Zhang Yang suddenly thought of his own research on Heavenly Dry Technique. The essence of it also relied on utilizing everything around him to absorb Spiritual Energy and increase his spiritual power. This was quite similar to the azure level of Strange Soul. After discussing it together, they roughly understood a direction: Jiazi Rainbow Shadow utilized Heavenly Dry Technique to absorb Spiritual Energy while Earthly Branch Techniques leveraged external forces to set up formations, combining heavenly stems and earthly branches to derive endless power.
However, due to Ding Weiwei's capture, after exchanging a few words about their techniques, Zhang Yang raised the question: how should they resolve this situation?
"Don't rush; sharpening the knife doesn't delay cutting wood. The reason I'm discussing heavenly stems and earthly branches with you is precisely to deal with Toothless. What I'm thinking now is whether we can set up a formation that traps both you and Toothless inside while simultaneously nullifying his Magic and boosting your spiritual power," Yu Qingwei explained.
"I understand what you mean..." Zhang Yang was about to argue but suddenly realized that it wasn't wise to be anxious right now. Toothless and Xiao Hansheng were still unaware that he had come to Haizhou; they were targeting him, so Ding Weiwei would not be in immediate danger for now. At this moment, the most important thing was for him not to lose his composure.
"Do you know Ding Weiwei's birth date and time?" Yu Qingwei asked again. Zhang Yang naturally knew and told her. Yu Qingwei then took out a tortoise shell and began drilling holes and burning it as usual.
"She is indeed trapped in the western suburbs of Yanjing. Huh? According to the divination, she has no connection with you; isn't she your girlfriend? Did they perhaps capture the wrong person?" Yu Qingwei suddenly remarked.
Zhang Yang showed the phone picture to Yu Qingwei. While eating at Yu Qingwei's restaurant, Yu Qingwei recognized Ding Weiwei. "It's her, but this divination... Last time I went to Zichen Temple, it indicated a life-and-death situation. I thought something was wrong, and this time it shows she has nothing to do with you..."
"Nothing is wrong. The problem lies with us. After returning from Zichen Temple, we broke up and haven't seen each other all winter break," Zhang Yang said with a bitter smile.
"No wonder. The western suburbs of Yanjing are mountainous; it must be a good place for Toothless to calculate," Yu Qingwei said. "I estimate that Toothless may not even know I exist. I'll go investigate the situation in the western suburbs first. Using Earthly Branch Techniques, I can find places and people faster than you can. You should use your connections in Yanjing to see if there are any clues."
Zhang Yang knew Yu Qingwei's abilities and nodded in agreement. Yu Qingwei left immediately.
After Yu Qingwei left, Zhang Yang suddenly thought of Shen Zhiyu and East Shao, as well as Li Shao. He took out his phone and called Shen Zhiyu. Once the call connected, Zhang Yang skipped the pleasantries and briefly explained the situation.
"There are many villages in the western suburbs of Yanjing; the worst-case scenario is that they hide people in those villages," Shen Zhiyu said while on a business trip. He advised Zhang Yang not to rush and added, "As long as that old Taoist doesn't change his appearance, I can have someone retrieve relevant surveillance footage; we should be able to find some clues."
"Also, since you gave me the phone number you sent the multimedia message from, we should at least be able to trace where that phone was when you sent it," Shen Zhiyu continued. Although he wasn't in Yanjing, contacting the relevant departments for assistance wouldn't be difficult.
"Okay, I'll wait for your news," Zhang Yang said before hanging up. He then realized how parched he felt; after merging with Strange Soul's azure level, he needed to drink a lot of water every day or he would become extremely thirsty.
He opened a bottle of mineral water and gulped it down. Before he could finish drinking, his phone rang again. Looking at the screen, he saw it was a call from Zong Lingxu.
