With a loud "bang," The Black Fat Man felt as if his hand hadn't even touched Zhang Yang's neck before he was suddenly thrown out, landing hard on the ground and crying out in pain. Middle Parted Hair clearly saw Zhang Yang reach out and fling The Black Fat Man away.
"You dare to resist law enforcement violently!" Middle Parted Hair pulled out a Rubber Stick from the city management enforcement vehicle.
"The city management is attacking people, take a picture of him!" A shout erupted from the crowd, and several phones pointed at Middle Parted Hair holding the Rubber Stick. Startled, Middle Parted Hair quickly hid the Rubber Stick behind him.
"Poor city management," Zhang Yang shook his head and said to everyone, "It's fine, everyone disperse. I'll go back with them for an investigation."
Just then, a police car screeched to a halt. Two police officers got out of the car.
"Chen, the Director, you're here! Someone is violently resisting law enforcement and inciting the crowd!" The Black Fat Man climbed up from the ground and walked up to a Big-Bellied Policeman.
"Everyone disperse," the Big-Bellied Policeman waved his hand at the onlookers, while another officer moved into the crowd to help clear it. Seeing the police arrive, most people scattered, with only a few stepping aside to watch from a distance.
"Zhu Section Chief, what's going on?" the Big-Bellied Policeman asked The Black Fat Man. The Black Fat Man exaggeratedly recounted the events but conveniently left out the detail of lifting up the little boy.
"You all need to come to the station for an investigation," the Big-Bellied Policeman said to Zhang Yang.
"Sure," Zhang Yang smiled and walked over to the police car, opened the door, and got inside. The Black Fat Man and Middle Parted Hair were taken aback, thinking how arrogant this kid was. Middle Parted Hair slapped his thigh and suddenly whispered to The Black Fat Man, "Zhu Section Chief, we've been tricked! This kid is just passing by; he hasn't done anything illegal. What’s the point of him going to the station?"
"Damn it!" The Black Fat Man exclaimed and then said, "At least he threw me once. Let's go discuss it at the station."
Upon arriving at the police station and inquiring further, it turned out to be a farce. The Big-Bellied Policeman was actually the deputy chief of the station and suggested that both parties mediate on their own. Zhang Yang didn't want The Black Fat Man and Middle Parted Hair to cause more trouble for Boss Lady, so he proactively offered two thousand yuan in compensation. After hesitating for a moment, The Black Fat Man ultimately agreed.
Watching Zhang Yang walk out of the police station, The Black Fat Man stood at the door gritting his teeth and said, "We must deal with this kid!"
"I said, look at that Boss Lady, she's so beautiful, and you just went up to chat, didn't you get into trouble?" Middle Parted Hair said. "But this guy is too nosy, it's time to teach him a lesson!"
"Let's follow him first!" The Black Fat Man said, and together with Middle Parted Hair, they followed at a distance. The two trailed Zhang Yang and saw him hail a taxi, so they quickly called for one as well, eventually following him to the entrance of a Budget Hotel.
In reality, Zhang Yang had long known that The Black Fat Man was following him, so he didn't go home and headed straight to the hotel. After entering the hotel, he indeed booked a room, lay down on the bed, and began to wait.
The Black Fat Man recognized the hotel sign and took out his phone to make a call.
After a while, there was a knock on the door of Zhang Yang's room. Looking through the peephole, he was surprised to see Big Head Yang, and immediately opened the door.
"You..." Big Head Yang brought four people with him. Upon seeing Zhang Yang, he immediately softened, "Oh, what a coincidence, I must have knocked on the wrong door." After saying that, he turned to leave, but his four companions were momentarily stunned; however, since their leader said so, they turned around to follow him out.
"Come back!" Zhang Yang said and walked straight into the room. Hearing this, Big Head Yang didn't dare to leave immediately and followed him inside; his four subordinates had no choice but to enter as well.
"Let them go outside; I have something to ask you," Zhang Yang said as he sat down.
"You guys go out first; this is a friend of mine," Big Head Yang waved his hand and closed the door behind him. He knew that with Zhang Yang's skills, having four more people wouldn't make a difference. Moreover, seeing Zhang Yang's demeanor didn't seem like he was about to fight; it was better to be polite.
"Sit!" Zhang Yang smiled. "Did Zhu Section Chief send you?"
"What did that idiot do to offend you? I'll go find him later!" Big Head Yang quickly reacted; after all, since no one had made a move yet, everything could be discussed. It was best to avoid this troublemaker for now.
"It's fine; no need to find him. I have other matters. Are you still working with Kang Ning?" Zhang Yang tossed a cigarette to Big Head Yang.
"Just trying to make a living," Big Head Yang chuckled as he took the cigarette and lit it.
"I won't hide it from you, Kang Ning is involved with his own company and also has dealings with underground money houses. Did you know about this?" Zhang Yang said.
"Well... I really haven't heard of that," Big Head Yang replied, slightly surprised, then confidently added, "You know, I just follow Kang Ning around dealing with some local thugs. He hasn't mentioned anything about such high-level business to me."
Zhang Yang stared at Big Head Yang for a moment, as if assessing whether he was lying. "The higher-ups are investigating this matter. Don't think that just because it's a Deputy Mayor, even a Vice Governor might not be able to handle it. Just act like nothing has happened. You understand what I mean, right?"
"I'm not looking for trouble. You take it easy; I'm leaving," Big Head Yang said, standing up to head for the door.
Zhang Yang smiled and nodded, letting him go.
After Big Head Yang left, Zhang Yang looked through the peephole to see him enter the elevator, then quickly slipped out of the room.
Once outside the hotel, Big Head Yang dismissed those around him and drove off alone, completely unaware that a taxi had followed him. He drove to a teahouse and then entered a relatively secluded private room on the second floor. Half an hour later, Kang Ning also arrived at the teahouse.
"What? Someone from above is coming to investigate the money laundering?" Upon hearing Big Head Yang's words, Kang Ning immediately became anxious. The last time Zhang Yang and Liu Gang interfered with his demolition project, the losses weren't significant and were within tolerable limits. However, this underground money house issue was serious; if Heavenly Mechanism Group sent someone to investigate, it could lead to dire consequences.
After discussing for a while without coming up with a solution, Kang Ning couldn't help but call Wu Zhongxin.
"What’s going on?" Wu Zhongxin's voice came through the receiver, sounding calm in a quiet environment.
"Heavenly Mechanism Group is here to investigate the underground money house!" Kang Ning said anxiously.
"What?" Wu Zhongxin remained silent for a while, and Kang Ning did not dare to ask further. Finally, Wu Zhongxin asked, "How did you know?"
Kang Ning then recounted Zhang Yang's arrival in Haizhou and what he had said to Big Head Yang.
"I understand now. I need to think this through and stay in touch," Wu Zhongxin said before hanging up the phone.
Kang Ning and Big Head Yang left the teahouse cautiously. Meanwhile, at home, after hanging up, Wu Zhongxin quickly opened the hidden door in his study and accessed the safe. He checked the fake passports, cash, and cards inside, letting out a long sigh of relief.
Kang Ning rushed to a residential area where he had an unused empty apartment. He kept the accounts related to the underground bank hidden in a secret compartment behind the toilet tank in the bathroom. The tiles of the compartment could be moved and were very inconspicuous. Normally, Kang Ning wouldn't check it unless necessary. However, given the sudden events, he felt compelled to take a look for reassurance.
Kang Ning retrieved the intact accounts and, like Wu Zhongxin, sighed in relief.
Just as he exhaled, he heard laughter behind him.
Before Kang Ning could turn around, he felt a sharp pain in his head and collapsed to the ground.
When he regained consciousness, the accounts were gone.
Kang Ning was completely panicked and had no choice but to call Wu Zhongxin again. Wu Zhongxin was taken aback and thought that it couldn't possibly be people from the Heavenly Mechanism Group; it was likely political rivals or those seeking wealth from the underworld. He tried to reassure Kang Ning not to panic too much while also comforting himself.
After this call, both Wu Zhongxin and Kang Ning secretly made a decision: when all else fails, retreat is best. They naturally would not inform each other. The fake passports and money were already prepared; taking their wives and children would attract too much attention, so it was better to leave first. After all, their families had not committed any crimes. As long as they left, they could preserve their lives for future opportunities.
Their thoughts were remarkably aligned as both chose to take a taxi directly to the airport that night.
Wu Zhongxin left in a hurry, instructing his secretary to cancel all activities for tomorrow as he was going to meet an Old Friend. He also did not notice that another taxi was following behind him.
At this moment, Shen Zhiyu's phone rang in Shanzhou. Two minutes later, Shen Zhiyu hung up the phone, thought for a moment, and then dialed a leader from the Disciplinary Committee of Shanhai Province.
Wu Zhongxin and Kang Ning arrived at the airport one after the other. Both had changed into ordinary attire, with their collars turned up, wearing hats and slightly lighter sunglasses. You wouldn't believe it; in this disguise, they probably wouldn't even recognize each other.
While waiting for their flight, they actually sat in front and behind each other but did not recognize one another.
This escape was too rushed; even Wu Zhongxin wondered why he was being so impulsive. However, he quickly found the reason—he had wanted to run away for a long time. He had known it would come to this since Old Qi's escape; he just didn't expect it to happen so soon. The disappearance of the accounts on Kang Ning's side was merely a trigger, much like the assassination incident in Sarajevo.
Kang Ning was even more worried than Wu Zhongxin because the data recorded in the accounts was astonishing, some of which even bore Wu Zhongxin's signature. The reason for signing was unavoidable; after all, the Boss behind the scenes was Wu Zhongxin. How could he not sign off on these transactions? These huge amounts couldn't just be casually recorded without proper documentation.
Sitting behind, Kang Ning inadvertently looked up and saw a group of people in dark suits approaching. The badges on their collars glinted coldly in the airport lounge.
"Alright, Lao Wu, lift your head up. I didn't expect you really wanted to run," said one of them, who was the Secretary of the Disciplinary Committee from Haizhou City. The Provincial Discipline Inspection Commission couldn't arrive this quickly; he was just here to scout ahead.
Seeing that these people were from the Disciplinary Committee, Kang Ning finally realized that the person sitting in front of him was Wu Zhongxin.
