As Zhang Yang entered the village, he saw a man dressed in ethnic minority clothing carrying a large basket coming out of the village.
"Big brother, can you understand what I'm saying?"
"I can. You are an outsider, lost?" The man spoke somewhat stiffly. Although Leopard had just bled after landing, and Zhang Yang was not stained with blood, he looked dusty and disheveled after the battle.
"Yes, I came here to explore on my own but ended up getting lost. Can you tell me where this is?" Zhang Yang said, pulling out a one-hundred-yuan bill from his wallet and offering it.
"What is this? No, no. Come to my house for some water and lunch first. I'll go gather herbs in the afternoon," the man pushed away Zhang Yang's money.
Zhang Yang initially thought the man was speaking as if it were still in recent years, but seeing that he did not recognize the hundred-yuan bill made him feel uneasy.
"Big brother, can you tell me what time it is now?" Zhang Yang asked.
"Now? It's the thirty-seventh year of the Republic Era!" the man replied.
"Damn!" Zhang Yang cursed inwardly. The thirty-seventh year of the Republic Era meant it was 1948. How did it come to this? He couldn't help but ask, "Big brother, what place is this?"
"This is Linan Province; over there is Wuliang Mountain," the man pointed to the distant high mountains.
"Alright." Zhang Yang temporarily accepted this fact. He followed the man to a bamboo house. It turned out that the man's name was Axi Luo, a local who had lived there for generations. This bamboo house was Axi Luo's home, where his elderly mother and wife were present; their two children were at a nearby town attending elementary school and had not yet returned home.
Axi Luo often ventured outside, so he spoke Mandarin best at home. The man from the mountains was very simple and hospitable; he urged his wife to prepare a meal quickly and poured water for Zhang Yang while engaging in conversation.
Zhang Yang showed Axi Luo the Cub while telling him that he had killed a female leopard and rescued this Cub.
Seeing the adorable Cub, Axi Luo was delighted. He held it in his hands and quickly found a small jar of Goat Milk from his home. He poured some Goat Milk into his palm for the Cub to lick. The Cub was clearly starving; it stretched out its pink little tongue and clumsily licked Axi Luo's palm with all its might.
After feeding the Cub until it was full, Axi Luo seemed to just realize something as he looked at the pale-faced young man:
"You? Alone? Without a hunting rifle? Killed an extremely hungry Adult Leopard?"
"Hehe, I was lucky; that leopard was starving and exerted too much force, crashing into a rock," Zhang Yang laughed.
Axi Luo was half-convinced but saw that Zhang Yang did not wish to elaborate further, so he refrained from probing deeper.
While they were chatting, suddenly a tall man in Uniform approached them, followed by a soldier behind him. "Axi Luo, have you seen any suspicious people lately? Linan Province is about to be fully liberated; we need to ensure logistical support in our base."
“Fan Company Commander has arrived? Please sit down, there's nothing suspicious,” Axi Luo said.
“Who is this?” Fan Company Commander glanced at Zhang Yang and asked.
“Hello, Fan Company Commander, my name is Zhang Yang, a student from Shanhai Province. I'm here for a visit and got lost,” Zhang Yang replied directly without waiting for Axi Luo to respond.
“Shanhai Province, you’re from Shanhai Province? So am I!” Fan Company Commander suddenly exclaimed. “I’m a native of Shanzhou, currently the company commander of the People's Liberation Army Border Unit. It seems I’m a few years older than you, little brother.” Fan Company Commander was very friendly and extended his hand.
“Are you Fan Zhen?” Zhang Yang suddenly recalled something and asked.
“Yes, that’s right. Did Axi Luo tell you?” Fan Zhen chuckled heartily.
He is my grandfather? Zhang Yang felt a rush of disbelief; what was happening? He was meeting his grandfather, and it was when his grandfather was young, calling him little brother right off the bat!
Seeing Xuan Zhenzi, he thought he had traveled back to the Tang Dynasty. Coming out of the Isolated Valley, he found himself on the eve of liberation in Linan Province. The Bronze Plate Soul-Settling Talisman, along with that place, was all too strange.
Suddenly, Zhang Yang thought about whether that place, the Isolated Valley, might be at a temporal intersection where time was chaotic and could change at any moment.
“Little brother, are you alright? On your way here, did you see any suspicious people?” Fan Zhen noticed that Zhang Yang seemed lost in thought and asked. In fact, it was quite suspicious for someone like Zhang Yang to suddenly appear in the village, but for some reason, Fan Zhen felt a special trust towards him and had no doubts at all.
“No, I didn’t see anyone,” Zhang Yang came back to his senses and replied softly.
“When do you plan to return to Shanhai Province?” Fan Zhen continued.
“I’m not sure. I’ll see how things go,” Zhang Yang answered vaguely without any clear idea.
“Alright then, you two chat for a bit; I’ll take my leave. Our unit is in another village not far from here; if you need anything, feel free to find me,” Fan Zhen said with a smile before walking away with the soldier.
After they walked away, the soldier suddenly asked, “Commander, do you think this young man is alright?”
“I don’t think so; he doesn’t seem like a spy. Don’t worry. By the way, check around the area again,” Fan Zhen chuckled and continued walking ahead.
“Yes!” The soldier responded and headed in another direction.
Meanwhile, after finishing dinner at Axi Luo's home, Zhang Yang took his leave. Axi Luo was very generous and didn’t ask many questions, even insisting on giving him some rice cakes.
“I can’t; I need to return to the Isolated Valley. I have to see what’s going on!” Zhang Yang hurried back to the banks of the Great River, where he had emerged from the Isolated Valley. Finding the right spot, with a splash, he leaped into the water.
Zhang Yang emerged from the pond and entered the Isolated Valley.
Upon entering the Stone House, Zhang Yang found that the Black Clay Town Box was just as it had been when he left, wide open.
"Kid, you're back!" a commanding voice came from behind.
Turning around, he saw it was Xuan Zhenzi! This time, it was a real living person, not a human form! Previously, he had looked like a man with black beard, black eyebrows, and black hair, but now he had white hair, white eyebrows, and a white beard!
"Is it still during the Tang Dynasty since you left?" Zhang Yang suppressed his heartbeat and quickly asked.
"What's wrong with that?" Xuan Zhenzi said disdainfully. "It's been twenty years; how come you returned? And it seems your appearance hasn't changed at all!"
"Twenty years?" Zhang Yang was taken aback. "Are you saying you left for twenty years before coming back?"
"That's right. I returned to take the Amethyst again. Then I need to deal with a local tyrant named Zhang Xunqiu. This person has killed countless people and committed unspeakable acts. Jian Nan Jiedushi asked me to come here; he must be eliminated!" Xuan Zhenzi said.
"The soul of Zhang Xunqiu has entered the Soul Requiem Blade and has been cultivating for a thousand years; now it has merged with me. How can I go kill Zhang Xunqiu?" Zhang Yang thought to himself and then said, "Senior, may I accompany you?"
