I also admire that Pervert for being able to find a place to rack up debts in such a location. It seems that over the years, he has managed to take advantage of this place.
I left ten thousand from the money in my Pouch and handed the rest to the Landlady, converting the ham into cash for her as well. The remaining amount will have to be paid back later.
Since there is only one bus from here to J University, it looks like we will have to stay here for the night.
Of course, I would sleep in my own room. As for Lin Miaomiao, I had already thought about where she could stay when we arrived.
At night.
Lying on the bed I had slept on for over a decade, I felt a sense of unfamiliarity for the first time.
My master had actually left; I still couldn't quite believe it. I took out the Sword Hilt that my master had left me from the Seed Bag and gently stroked the gem on it.
"Awoo~" A wolf howl echoed from the distant mountains.
Logically, hearing wolves howl in these mountains is expected; over the years, I had seen villagers tracking wolves more than once. However, I felt something was off.
It wasn't a full moon night, so there shouldn't be such sudden wolf howls. Moreover, if you listened closely, you would think this howl sounded more like someone imitating a wolf's call.
There are monsters! That was my first reaction.
Although it was decreed after the founding of the nation that no creatures could become sentient, with such a vast world, can you really stop them? The origins of these monsters are lost to history. However, during the era of the Ancient Court, the ruler was still the Golden Crow—Eastern Emperor Taiyi! That's right; at that time, the court belonged to the monster clan. There was also the famous Demon Master and Kunpeng from the North Sea of Beiming! The monster clan has never been on good terms with humans, but in recent years, their reliance on Earth Spirit Energy has diminished while human cultivation techniques have advanced. Coupled with human destruction of forests, sightings of monsters have become rare.
I never expected that after my master left, monsters would appear here. Since I couldn't sleep anyway, I'll go check it out!
Putting away the Sword Hilt, I got up and headed up the mountain.
No one knows this mountain better than I do; I grew up here. My Wind Walking Technique was even developed on this mountain.
I quickly reached the mountain peak, stepping lightly on the virtual wind.
"Awoo~" Another howl echoed in the night.
"Three Purities Edict, Daoist Law of Correct Origin, Official Blessing, All Restrictions Lifted. Spiritual Sight, activate!"
As I activated Spiritual Sight, the dark night became clear before my eyes.
On the other side of the mountain crouched a creature that resembled a wolf. It was significantly larger than a wolf, with drooping ears, shorter front legs, a shorter snout, and its tail tucked between its hind legs.
It was a jackal! The treacherous jackal!
Daring to howl and make noise on my territory? Are you tired of living? Perfect, I'll catch you and have you as game!
I had brought the Military Dagger that Wang Ni gave me, and holding the dagger tightly, I stealthily approached the jackal from behind.
The jackal was clearly lost in its soulful howling and had no idea of my presence. Before long, I was right behind it.
Just as I was about to stab down with my dagger, the jackal suddenly turned around and snapped its sharp teeth toward my throat.
No wonder jackals are more cunning than foxes; it had set a trap for me.
I played along with its scheme and thrust my dagger toward the creature's teeth.
"Clang!"
The beast actually bit down hard enough to break my dagger.
"Not bad at all," I said with a smile, gathering my energy and swiftly dodging to the back of the creature.
All canine animals share a characteristic—strong heads, tough tails, and flexible waists! So dealing with them is simple as long as you target their weaknesses.
I delivered a side kick to its waist, sending it flying two or three meters away.
The creature lay there for a while before getting back up. It growled at me, making a hissing sound from the corner of its mouth. I knew it was angry.
"Come on, beast!" I taunted, not caring whether it understood me.
The creature leaped towards me with a fierce jump, swinging its tail around. The sound of its tail slicing through the air was alarming; if it hit me, it would leave me battered and bruised.
I activated the Wind Walking Technique, nimbly avoiding the attack. As I landed, I found a Fire Talisman in my hand.
"Go!"
I ignited the Fire Talisman and threw it at the creature.
The Fire Talisman landed on it, instantly engulfing it in flames. (If I can ignite fire, I can control it; there's no way I'm setting the forest ablaze.)
The creature let out a pitiful scream and jumped around frantically. Even so, it was undeterred and charged at me with the flames still burning on its body, extending its short yet sharp front claws as if trying to make a last-ditch effort. Of course, I wouldn't give it that chance. Just as it was about to grab me, I swiftly kicked out with my left foot, striking its belly and eliciting another mournful cry.
The creature fell to the side, its eyes filled with despair yet determination. Amidst the flames, I saw its fur slowly burn away, revealing blood-red flesh beneath.
Now its teeth were exposed without any fur covering them, looking quite terrifying. The creature let out a low growl challenging me and charged right in front of me at that moment.
With its fur gone, the creature's short front limbs were fully exposed, but its hind legs were still powerful. It suddenly pounced on me, driving its front claws deep into my shoulder.
I endured the excruciating pain and pushed the wolf aside.
“Earthly Profound Sect Myriad Qi Root Cultivating for countless eons, proving my divine power. Within and beyond the three realms, only the Dao is supreme. My body is enveloped in golden light, unseen by the eyes, unheard by the ears. It encompasses the earth, nurturing all beings. Reciting it once brings forth brightness. The guardians of the three realms and the Five Emperors pay homage to all gods, commanding thunder. Ghost Demon trembles in fear, spirits lose their forms. Within me is thunder, the Thunder God hidden in name, wisdom penetrating through. The five energies surge forth, golden light manifests, protecting the true person. Urgently as Jade Emperor descends with commands.”
The protective Golden Light Spell is one of the few spells that can be used in battle, capable of summoning supreme protective golden light.
A faint golden aura surrounded my body; it turned out that the wound inflicted by the wolf was also emanating a dark energy—this beast's claws are poisonous!
"Damn it," I growled softly, grabbing a sturdy branch from the ground and channeling all my golden light into it.
The wolf stood at a distance with its head lowered, its eyes fixed intently on me.
I activated Wind Walk beneath my feet and maximized Spiritual Sight. I lunged forward, bending down to charge at the wolf, swinging the branch wrapped in golden light down upon it with a whoosh.
The wolf seemed to be struck by immense force, rolling on the ground several times before falling silent.
I leaned against a large tree, panting heavily while holding the branch. Only after confirming that the wolf would not move again did I approach it.
“Amitabha,” an Old Monk walked over from the side, his kind face adorned with eyebrows that could almost serve as a beard, leaning on a slender bamboo staff. He wore a black monk robe rarely seen on monks, embodying a state of asceticism.
“On this night journey, I see you casually taking lives; may I ask why?”
Having been saved by Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva last time, I held a favorable impression of monks. I joined my hands together politely and said, “Master, can you not see that this is a wolf?”
“What wrong has it done? After all, becoming a beast was not its original intention,” replied the Old Monk slowly, his voice carrying a sense of sorrow from having witnessed much suffering.
“It harms people!”
"It has already harmed others? If so, please provide evidence."
"Must it harm someone before we can kill it? Why can't we kill it to prevent it from harming others in the future?" I asked, confused.
"In the eyes of Buddha, all Sentient Beings are equal. How can we kill it simply because it has the potential to harm others? Who can guarantee that it will turn back before causing harm?"
"Are you betting a person's life against a beast?" I countered. "That seems very unfair to that person."
"That's reasonable." The Old Monk actually closed his eyes to ponder.
"Master?" I called softly.
The Old Monk opened his eyes and recited a Rebirth chant over the corpse of the wolf. I quietly listened from the side.
"Sigh, fortune or misfortune?" the Old Monk muttered to himself before suddenly picking up the wolf's corpse and turning to leave.
"Master?" I shouted.
"You are too filled with resentment, young man. You should soak in the Three Rivers Water for a while. Take care of yourself."
The Old Monk vanished into the forest in an instant.
