Studying at school can actually be a very dull experience, but when you have a weirdo around, the boredom disappears, leaving only endless torment.
Weirdo Brother is someone who easily makes friends; no matter whether you know him or not, he will come over and act obnoxiously. Of course, if he didn't use that torturous classical Chinese, I would admit he could be tolerable. However, once his shamelessness is combined with his half-baked way of speaking, it can truly drive a person insane.
After class, Wang Ni called me and Weirdo Brother into the office. I had no idea what it was about.
Wang Ni is our homeroom teacher. Although I know this was arranged by Uncle Xing, I don't understand what qualifications Wang Ni has to be a homeroom teacher for college students. Perhaps I haven't really seen her normal side, because my impression of Wang Ni is that she is an absolute Violent Woman.
However, according to what I've heard, Wang Ni actually has a graduate degree. I seriously doubt whether she knocked out the proctor during her exams and copied from others; given what I know about her, she could definitely pull that off.
Still, I have to show some respect for her; after all, she is our homeroom teacher.
It was rare for Wang Ni to wear a long skirt. If she sat quietly there, she would exude an aura of ethereal grace. But as soon as I thought of the scene where she hit Invaders with an iron pipe, any sense of grace vanished from my mind.
"Let's go," Wang Ni said as she stood up and waved us over. "The one surnamed Xing has something for you."
The one surnamed Xing must refer to Uncle Xing. It’s normal for him to look for me, but why would he be looking for Weirdo Brother?
Arriving at the Sports Office with Wang Ni, it seemed like Uncle Xing had been waiting for a long time. Upon seeing me and Wang Ni, he stood up to greet us.
"I'm looking for you both because there has been an incident at the school recently, so we might be short on manpower. However, there are some urgent tasks that need to be prioritized. Yin Zheng'an, originally you had two months left in your internship period, but due to your outstanding performance during the attack at school, you are now officially transitioned to full-time status. Since you have connections with the Underworld, from now on you will be responsible for tasks assigned by the Underworld." Uncle Xing handed me a piece of paper and continued without giving me a chance to speak; this is typical of him.
"Zhang Lei, you came from Maoshan, right?" Uncle Xing suddenly asked Weirdo Brother.
Wait a minute, are you telling me this weirdo is from Maoshan? How does that even make sense? Aren't people from Maoshan supposed to be very rigid and value rules? This guy doesn’t seem to fit that description at all.
"I am a disciple of Zhang Jiangyu," Zhang Lei said as he bowed to Uncle Xing. Uncle Xing nodded in return.
"Yin Zheng'an, you two should get to know each other. From now on, this will be your partner, his name is Zhang Lei."
Before Uncle Xing could finish the introduction, I waved my hand, "No need, I know him. He was the first student to get infected, and I was the one who dealt with the evil."
Weirdo Brother awkwardly said, "Dao Brother, please don't be so abrupt. I also didn't mean to fall into this trap. Sigh, the past is hard to bear, hard to bear."
"Uncle Xing, if he keeps talking like this, I won't be able to help but send him over to Old Black," I said. With my short temper, if I had to deal with this oddball, I'd definitely go crazy.
"Let me put it this way: I went into the school restroom because there was something unusual going on. But unexpectedly, I was attacked by a mass of black energy. When I woke up again, I was already in the hospital." (It's not that I'm being lazy and not using punctuation; that guy just blurted it all out in one breath. How could I punctuate it? I was almost suffocating myself.)
Wow, he managed to say such a long paragraph in just one second without pausing. Is this guy studying Taoist Arts or performing stand-up comedy?
"Uncle Xing, are you serious?" I pointed at Weirdo Brother. "You really aren't trying to use your power for personal gain and want me to be humanely destroyed, are you?"
"Just bear with it; we have no other choice. If we had a choice, we wouldn't let you rookies take on missions," Uncle Xing raised his teacup and took a nice sip. "Also, Wang Ni is different from you guys; don't think about dragging her down with you."
"You can't possibly want me to take him along, right?" Suddenly realizing something, I hurriedly asked.
"What else can we do? You are now our mainstay here," Uncle Xing patted my shoulder. "I have high hopes for you, buddy!"
Uncle Xing, how can you say that without feeling guilty? Well, it's no longer a matter of guilt because I'll curse you with kidney deficiency for the rest of your life.
"Uncle Xing, whenever I get the chance, I'll definitely sell him out," I said while rubbing my forehead.
"Feel free," Uncle Xing mimicked my gesture of rubbing my forehead. "Anyway, he's all yours now."
Since the attack on JZ Normal University, most of the forces from the Execution Office have been focused on protecting and maintaining the defenses of JZ Normal University. After all, this is the headquarters of the Heavenly Bureau of Human Affairs, and we need to prevent any further possibilities. Therefore, the scattered forces have become insufficient, which is why I and Weirdo Brother, who originally did not belong to the Execution Office, have been deployed.
As for Wang Ni, I understand that the previous attack was likely related to her, so it's better to keep her at JZ Normal University. However, even though Wang Ni can be a bit crazy, I still prefer to go on missions with her. After all, no matter how crazy she is, she is still a beautiful woman and can be considered a scenic view in everyday life, right? You could have just switched my partner, but instead you replaced her with a man. And not just any man, but a weirdo who talks too much.
I can't believe it.
But I really didn't expect Weirdo Brother to be a descendant of Maoshan. Although I don't know anyone named Zhang Jiangyu, given the decline of Mao Shan Arts today, it seems that this lineage is all that remains.
Maoshan is different from Longhu Mountain; although both are dedicated to exorcising evil spirits, Longhu Mountain charges fees while Maoshan does not. Moreover, Longhu Mountain generally limits the number of disciples each successor can take, whereas Maoshan has no such rules. The Patriarch of Longhu Mountain is Zhang Daoling; I wonder if he is the same boy I encountered in Bodhi Patriarch's Three Stars Cave.
The Patriarch of Maoshan has always been a topic of debate. Generally speaking, Northern Maoshan recognizes Ge Hong as its Patriarch, while Southern Maoshan venerates Tao Hongjing as its Patriarch.
Although there are still Taoist temples on both Longhu Mountain and Maoshan where priests reside, their original sects are nearly extinct. Maoshan is slightly better off; it previously accepted many disciples, and some less skilled practitioners still use the Maoshan name to deceive others. People still recognize the name Maoshan to some extent; however, most people today do not know Longhu Mountain unless they study Taoist scriptures.
In the past, Longhu Mountain and Maoshan were considered fairy mountains in the hearts of the people, inhabited by immortals. This is not entirely false; one of the famous Eight Immortals, Zhang Guo Lao, actually practiced on Maoshan. Initially, Mao Shan Arts aimed for practitioners to reach the status of Great Immortal. However, with the gradual depletion of Earth Spirit Energy and a decrease in talent over time, Mao Shan Arts began to decline. Eventually, it could only be used against some evil spirits and monsters on Earth. Today, only a few people still practice some forms of Mao Shan Arts, but they are mostly not used for righteous purposes anymore.
Uncle Xing was introduced by Zhang Lei through Night Wanderer. Night Wanderer was also from Maoshan before; perhaps he couldn't bear to see it decline like this.
"My name is Zhang Lei. Thank you for your help before; I will definitely perform well on this mission," Weirdo Brother started rambling again.
"Shut up!" Uncle Xing and I said in unison.
