Dark Moonlit Night, murder and arson.
For some unknown reason, the moon tonight is particularly dim, and the entire sky is shrouded in dark clouds. In the silent night, streetlights quietly extinguish, leaving only the faint moonlight illuminating the ground. Occasionally, a distant meow breaks the stillness of the night, adding an eerie touch.
“Midnight, child, turn off the lights. Wandering Soul, there are ghosts knocking at the door.”
This is not a call meant for ordinary people; it is a ghostly cry meant for wandering spirits and children who roam at night.
Children can see spirits because they have just transitioned from Underworld Reincarnation to the human realm, allowing them to perceive things that adults cannot. However, as children grow older, this ability to see spirits gradually fades away.
Moreover, if someone knocks on the door at night, you must ask who it is because not everyone who comes is human.
Never wander outside at Midnight, for that is the hour of wandering spirits.
As night falls, Insect Chirping and Bird Singing echo in the night sky, and a Daoist figure approaches from afar. It sways as if it has no bones, as if someone is controlling it from behind.
The figure wobbles to the edge of a River and jumps down without hesitation.
“Thud.” With a splash, the once mirror-like calmness of the River Surface is shattered, creating ripples that soon fade back into tranquility.
The moon remains dim, and Insect Chirping and Bird Singing continue their calls.
A life quietly passes away.
The sun shines brightly overhead as I walk out of the cinema with Red Boy.
On this rare day off, Lin Miaomiao suggested we go watch a movie together.
It has been a long time since I left the Taoist temple, and a lot has passed since Yama King assigned me a ghost-catching mission. Everything has been quite peaceful, and I haven't encountered any abnormalities. I have finally experienced a somewhat normal college life.
Every morning at six o'clock, I go out to the park for morning exercises with Red Boy and Lin Miaomiao, and we have added two new members to our group.
One is Wang Ni, and the other is Zhang Lei.
Oh, right, the nickname I gave Zhang Lei didn't receive everyone's approval, but his chatter earned him protests from all. In the end, it was Lin Miaomiao who came up with a more fitting nickname—Zhang Fan!
This nickname suits Weirdo Brother perfectly; he has the last name Zhang and is quite annoying! It quickly gained unanimous agreement.
Of course, I won't admit that this is revenge for him hitting me with that sword.
After learning the cultivation methods I taught, Wang Ni also started joining us for morning exercises and discussed many cultivation-related topics with Red Boy, which has helped us all improve together.
Now, both Red Boy and I solve our lunch and dinner problems at ‘Red Bean Noodle Shop’, and occasionally Lin Miaomiao joins us. As we went there more often, Lin Miaomiao and Landlady became familiar with each other. Their biggest pastime now is sitting together to chat and gossip.
Of course, they never discuss fashion issues. One reason is that there is still a generation gap (one is a girl, and the other is an ancient fox; you can imagine how deep that gap is), and the other reason is that Lin Miaomiao's taste and economic situation differ greatly from that of Landlady.
This week marks the first week after school started, and it's rare to have a break.
Since Red Boy arrived, I haven't taken him out to have fun. At first, it was due to lack of money, and later it was because of time constraints.
However, Lin Miaomiao suggested a good idea for us—let's go watch a movie!
Watching a movie doesn't cost much; it's within my budget, and it's also a great way for Red Boy to understand modern society!
However, there are no cinemas near JZ Normal University, so we planned to head into the city early in the morning for some fun.
Not only did I invite Red Boy, but I also called Lin Miaomiao and Wang Ni, along with Qu Huan and the Landlady from Red Bean Affection. I actually invited that cashier girl from Red Bean Affection too, but unfortunately, she didn't give me a chance. I specifically didn't invite Zhang Fan because he is too annoying.
Relying on parents when at home and on friends when outside. After being out for so long, these people are my good buddies, and they have helped me a lot. So, since it was a rare opportunity, I decided to treat everyone generously.
However, with such a large group, not a single person had a driver's license.
After asking around, it turned out that Zhang Fan was the only one with a driver's license. There was no choice but to call him along.
I didn't invite Black and White Impermanence or Night and Day Wanderer; they might not go to the movies if I asked them, but if I invited them for a meal, Black Wuchang and Sun God would definitely come running.
We rented a car and happily set off.
The movie tickets were bought online in a row of seats together, and I specifically arranged for Red Boy and Qu to sit together.
However, I overlooked something very important—I forgot to buy popcorn while bringing along a group of girls.
So, I only brought Red Boy with me. The main reason for bringing him was that I couldn't carry so much by myself. Let's count the heads: Lin Miaomiao, Landlady, Qu Huan, Wang Ni—that's five people. We won't count Zhang Fan; Red Boy should at least get a taste of it too. That makes six of us. With just two hands, how could I carry that much?
Carrying the popcorn with Red Boy again as we entered the cinema, we almost got mistaken for popcorn sellers.
Each person got a bucket of popcorn, munching away as the movie started.
Two hours later...
"Hey, Ango, is there really armor that can fly with people?" Red Boy said dreamily as we exited the theater.
It's also my fault for bringing him to watch "Captain America: Civil War" and discussing science with Red Boy. Was I just looking for fun?
"This one isn't available yet," I said with frustration. I wanted it too, but it really wasn't available.
"Hey, Little Anzi, let's go eat over there later," Lin Miaomiao said as she walked out of the cinema.
There were a total of eight people in our group, five of whom were beautiful women, each with different styles—some plump, some slim. Lin Miaomiao was lively, Wang Ni was charming, the Landlady was intellectual, and Qingse was cute and playful! But when I turned to look at the remaining three guys, all of whom were underage and rather sleazy (Zhang Fan), only one was decent-looking.
However, those onlookers didn't know my pain; these beauties could eat far more than I could.
I didn't even consider going for steak; that stuff not only doesn't fill you up but is also expensive. Besides, I can't eat meat at all and can only watch. Wasn't I just spending money to feel miserable?
"Let's go for Spicy Hot Pot; it's economical and has both meat and vegetarian options. You can cook whatever you want," Lin Miaomiao suggested.
Among us, Lin Miaomiao was the best at managing expenses. Being a local, she knew all the good food in the city and fully considered our group's unique situation.
"Miao Miao, you lead the way; we're fine with whatever you choose," the Landlady said while holding onto Huan.
It wasn't that the Landlady favored Huan; it was just that Huan was too difficult to manage. In the store, she would lean over to anyone holding something in their hands. Over time, countless otaku ended up waiting in front of Red Bean Affection to feed her like they were at a zoo.
As soon as Huan entered the city, it was as if she had seen a giant cake—looking around everywhere and easily getting lost if not careful. So the Landlady had no choice but to keep holding onto her.
"Alright, there's a nice Spicy Hot Pot place nearby; I'll make a reservation right now."
It's really convenient nowadays; you can buy tickets and make reservations directly on your phone.
Spicy Hot Pot is not far; just a few steps and we arrived. This is my first time eating at a place like this. Unlike typical Spicy Hot Pot restaurants where the Boss prepares the ingredients, here each person has their own pot and can cook whatever they want.
I found a table that could seat eight people and sat down. Surprisingly, it was self-service, which I really like in a restaurant.
I picked out my favorite ingredients, and Red Boy, Landlady, and I, along with another friend, were all vegetarian, sitting on one side. The other four, especially Lin Miaomiao, were meat lovers, creating a stark contrast:
One side had no meat, while the other side was all about meat.
"Eat more; we need to make back the cost of this meal," I said while cooking a piece of tofu.
"Hey, Huan, you can't eat that raw," Huan was about to put a piece of raw beef into her mouth when I quickly stopped her.
"This one is also not okay." Just as I took the beef from Huan's hand, she grabbed a handful of raw chicken: "Landlady, please stop her."
"It's fine," Landlady casually said while picking up a skewer of Lotus Slices. "Let her eat."
I saw Huan grab a packet of mustard but didn't stop her.
"Wow~" Huan stuck out her tongue, fanning her hands towards her mouth. But to be fair, it was quite an achievement for Landlady to teach her how to use chopsticks.
Zhang Fan sat at one end, quietly eating without saying a word. Since we brought him along to have one less driver, he didn't need to talk. So when we left, Landlady had sealed his mouth shut. Honestly, this trick really works; the atmosphere became much quieter.
"Yin Zheng'an, try this," Lin Miaomiao suddenly handed me a bowl of something I didn't recognize.
"What is this? Is it vegetarian?"
"Absolutely, give it a try." Lin Miaomiao smiled, and I always felt like she had some ulterior motive.
I took the bowl, and wow, I actually recognized what was inside—good stuff!
"Hong, come try this too. Zhang Fan, you should have some as well."
I picked up a piece and swallowed it without even biting down, intending to trick Red Boy and Zhang Fan into trying it.
Zhang Fan looked at me and smiled without saying a word; it seemed he also recognized this thing. Red Boy, however, fell for it completely and stuffed it into his mouth without even looking.
This thing is called Fish Mint; it's an herb but has a strong fishy smell that’s hard to get rid of when raw. It's harmless to people, but those who aren't used to it really can't handle it.
Red Boy chewed a couple of times and suddenly started fanning his mouth with both hands.
"Hahaha!" Zhang Fan sat directly across from Red Boy, making exaggerated gestures with his mouth wide open. Although he was silent due to being gagged, we all knew what he was doing.
Red Boy's face turned red, and suddenly a burst of fire shot out of his mouth. You see, Red Boy has True Fire in his belly.
A ball of fire shot towards Zhang Fan, who dodged just in time. The flames headed straight for the entrance of Spicy Hot Pot, where a waiter was carrying a tray of freshly sliced beef. Without noticing, the flames leaped onto the beef, and in an instant, the meat was cooked.
