Morning.
Red Bean Affection.
I was diligently wiping the floor with a mop in the noodle shop, which was completely empty. The front door was tightly locked, and the only reminder that this was a noodle shop was the boiling broth in the kitchen.
Thinking about my morning experience made my head ache. Damn it, isn't this just taking advantage of me, an honest person? I already had a habit of waking up early to exercise, so I decided to visit Landlady right after my morning workout. I originally wanted to discuss how to guide Meng Jiangnu, but I never expected that Landlady and the others would decide to take a day off.
This wouldn't do. If Meng Jiangnu thought I was playing her for a fool, how could we proceed with future work? After all, the Meng Po Soup connection had been suspended for so long that even the prices in Underworld had gone up.
I pleaded with Landlady to continue operating today, and she reluctantly agreed but made one request: I had to help her with some work!
Typically, the morning task distribution at Red Bean Affection went like this: Qu would open the door, Huan would clean, and when Landlady arrived, she would bring the groceries. As for collecting payments, according to Landlady, she could come or not as she pleased.
Luan was also part of the demon clan, but given Landlady's special status, she didn't lack for wages from Landlady, so Landlady let her be.
However, today I was the only one in the noodle shop. Landlady took Qu and Huan shopping, leaving me as the most diligent one behind.
What kind of karma have I created?
But it had been a while since I did chores like these; I suddenly found myself missing the days when I lived with my master.
When I was with my master, I did almost all the work while he occasionally guided my cultivation. My master never showcased his abilities in front of me; he didn't even have the demeanor one would expect from a Master. Once, when I tried to tell fortunes under a bridge like him, I ended up losing money instead. He didn't believe me and excitedly bought a table and then went to the back mountain to chop a slender bamboo pole to make a banner. He sat under that bridge for three days—he returned looking starved and disheveled.
The tasks in the noodle shop weren't too overwhelming either; it didn't take long before everything was neatly arranged. I took a glance at the soup in the kitchen; there was a particular care with Vegetable Soup: you must never let the Vegetable Leaves turn yellow, or it wouldn't taste fresh and would have a grassy flavor.
Everything was ready, and I sat alone on a chair waiting for Landlady and the others to return.
The door of the noodle shop was adorned with a string of bells, which jingled whenever someone pushed the door open, alerting those inside that a customer had arrived.
Hearing the bells ring, I looked up and saw it wasn't the Landlady or Meng Jiangnu, but a stranger, a Sister.
I had seen this Sister before; she was the one who had come here with her boyfriend to eat noodles, and I had cooked them. I heard from the Landlady that she was also a fairy.
"Hey, why is the door open today? Where's the Landlady?" the Sister asked curiously.
"The Landlady went grocery shopping. Do you need her for something?" I replied nonchalantly.
"Not really, I just brought something she asked me to." The Sister took out a beautifully wrapped package. "Here it is."
I reached out to take it, but the Sister pulled it back. "I can't give this to you."
"Oh, how mysterious! What's inside?"
"I'm not telling you!" The Sister tucked the package away and sat down at the table next to me.
"Well, just wait then," I casually remarked. "She should be back soon."
I wasn't familiar with this fairy Sister, and since I knew she had a boyfriend, I couldn't flirt with her.
"Ah!" I stretched lazily and stood up to check on the pot of soup in the kitchen.
"Hey, newcomer, bring me a glass of water," the Sister called out from outside.
I pointed at the Counter and said, "You can pour it yourself. The water dispenser is right next to the Counter, and the cups are there too."
Sister stood up and went to get herself some water. "How do you treat customers, you newcomer? When Sister Wan comes back, I'm definitely going to report you!"
"Go ahead, I'm scared of you," I put down the soup spoon in my hand and shot her a glance. "I actually hope you do!"
"Hey, you little demon, don't you understand the rules?" Sister poured herself a cup of water and leaned against the Service Window, looking at me. "If you offend Sister Wan, do you think you can still get by here?"
"I'm not under her jurisdiction, so what do I care?" I replied confidently.
"Do you really think you can escape Sister Wan's grasp? If you offend her, can you still survive in this city?"
"I'm not a demon," I said with frustration. "If I were to transform into a demon, would I look like this?"
"You're not a demon?" Sister's eyes widened. "Then how could Sister Wan let you work in the noodle shop?"
"I'm just here to help, okay?" I walked out of the kitchen and clapped my hands. "I'm not a new waitress or anything."
Me as a waitress? I couldn't afford to raise Pixiu like that.
"What's your name?" Sister drank all the water in her cup and looked at me with great interest.
"Yin Zheng'an."
"You are Yin Zheng'an!" Sister jumped up in surprise and pointed at me. "You're the new one from the Heavenly Bureau of Human Affairs? Can I get some special treatment from you?"
Just met and already thinking about the back door? What kind of people are these?
"Miss, what exactly do you do?" I asked, looking at Sister.
"Me?" Sister suddenly became shy and said, "I'm a matchmaker."
"A matchmaker??" Forgive my lack of intelligence; I couldn't process that right away. Generally, when it comes to fairies, especially female fairies, they tend to become quite beautiful when taking human form. The few fairies I know, whether it's Landlady or Qu Huan, could definitely rank among the beauties in any university! (So in the fairy world, looks aren't usually a big deal since they all look good.) The Sister in front of me was no exception; she just had the aura of a slightly prettier college student. But even so, hearing that such a Sister suddenly claimed to be a matchmaker would leave anyone dumbfounded.
"Oh no!" Sister stomped her foot. "I knew you'd misunderstand!"
"Isn't your fairy matchmaking different from ours?" I really had no understanding of fairy matters.
"Oh no!" Sister stomped her foot again. "I just introduce new fairies to potential partners."
"That's called an agent, Sister! Who taught you language?" I exclaimed in frustration; this was just too much for me to handle.
"Well, that's how it is. But I'm still one of the better ones; at least I don't deceive people." Sister pointed at me. "Want me to introduce you to someone? Our fairy girls are all quite beautiful."
"Is she more beautiful than her?" I pointed at Meng Jiangnu, who was about to enter.
"Dinglingling~" Meng Jiangnu pushed open the door without greeting anyone and directly found a seat.
"Hey, who is that? Is she also a fairy?" Sister quietly asked me.
"You've definitely seen her before, but you probably don't remember," I said mysteriously.
In the realm of Reincarnation, who hasn't encountered Meng Po? However, whether one remembers her is another matter.
"Sister, are you here?" I was the only one to greet Meng Jiangnu.
"Mm." Meng Jiangnu lightly nodded in response. I was not surprised; this was her usual demeanor.
It's no wonder, though. How many years has Meng Jiangnu spent on the Bridge of Helplessness? She has long since become indifferent to life, death, and the complexities of human relationships.
"Such a personality?" Sister stood up straight and walked slowly to Meng Jiangnu's side. "I'm Shaoming. You are so beautiful! What is your name?"
Wow, she's flirting? But dear girl, your approach might work on ordinary women, but with her? Hah, you're wasting your effort!
"Alright, alright." I quickly pulled the Sister named Shaoming away. "This is my client; do you still want to provoke her?"
"Your client? Are you a pimp then?"
"Get lost! I'm bringing people to the Underworld!" I revealed my Judgment Seal. "Do you believe I will report you for obstructing official business?"
"What is that? Why is there so much Yin Qi?" Sister dodged my Judgment Seal.
Well, she doesn't recognize it at all; my efforts were in vain.
"I am in charge of Underworld affairs, so trying to get me to open back doors is pointless," I explained.
"No, it's useful! I can facilitate business between Ghosts and Demons. I've had ideas for a long time, but unfortunately, I've never had the opportunity."
"What kind of monster are you?"
"I come from Tushan, how about you?" Sister threw me a flirtatious glance.
I slapped my forehead; another fox spirit.
"You should go do what you need to do. Don't you have a boyfriend? Go find him," I urged, wanting Sister to leave quickly.
"Let her stay," the Landlady returned at that moment. "You still need to rely on her."
"Sister Wan, you're back?" I hurried over to greet her.
"Yes." Sister Wan looked around with satisfaction and nodded. "It's quite clean."
"Of course, I'm very capable!" I boasted. "What did you mean earlier, Sister Wan?"
"I thought about it carefully. The failure of your Meng Po Soup is likely related to Meng Jiangnu's fading feelings for Fan Xiliang. You might not see it, but I know that Meng Jiangnu has almost lost her longing for Fan Xiliang."
"Is that so?" I didn't expect Sister Wan to have figured out Meng Jiangnu's issue. "What should we do?"
"I have an idea for you. Just take her to Tushan for a visit," Sister Wan suggested.
