Lingfeng was chasing ghosts and accidentally entered the Ghost Gate.
At the same time, the villagers of Qingshui Village were praying for Lingfeng with sorrowful voices, while Lingfeng was rapidly descending into an endless abyss.
Lingfeng followed those ghosts, thinking that entering would allow him to intimidate them and prevent them from causing trouble. However, on the other side of the Ghost Gate, there was indeed an endless abyss.
With one misstep, Lingfeng found himself falling like a stone from the sky, his body unresponsive. The ghosts nearby revealed their true forms, each with green faces and sharp teeth, watching Lingfeng with glee.
Lingfeng smiled at the ghosts and then drew out the Connecting Rod, reciting an Incantation. The Connecting Rod, originally a weapon of the Locust King, had accumulated a lot of Spiritual Energy. As Lingfeng chanted the Incantation, he activated the Spiritual Energy, causing a sudden flash of light that sent shivers through the ghosts.
"Go ahead and laugh!" Lingfeng said to the ghosts with a smile hiding a knife.
The ghosts, unaware of the true purpose of Lingfeng's rod, saw the light flickering above it and changed their expressions from glee to flattering smiles.
Satisfied, Lingfeng snorted and put the Connecting Rod back on his back. He pointed at one ghost with half a head and asked, "Tell me, what is this place? Why do I feel like my soul is detached from my body, floating lightly yet falling so fast?"
The ghost, mistaking Lingfeng for a powerful figure descended from above, respectfully replied, "This is the path to the Underworld, also known as the Underworld Abyss."
"Underworld Abyss?" Lingfeng searched his mind but only knew that there were paths leading to the Underworld, like the Ghost Gate and Yellow Springs Road. He had never heard of anything called the Underworld Abyss, so he asked, "What is this Underworld Abyss? I've never heard of it before."
"The Underworld Abyss didn't exist before, but a year ago, strange phenomena appeared here. Every evening, this entrance to the Underworld would manifest. Although we cannot fly, as long as we stand at this opening, we can ascend freely!" the ghost explained.
Lingfeng nodded thoughtfully and after a moment asked in confusion, "Don't the officials of the Underworld take action? What are Yama and Ox-Head and Horse-Face doing? How can they allow you to act recklessly and disrupt the order of the three realms?"
Thinking he had subdued the ghosts with his words like an imperial decree, he was surprised when his statement drew disdain from a burly ghost.
The ghost, with a scruffy beard and dirt-covered appearance, retorted dismissively, "Right now, those Underworld Officials are struggling to save themselves; how can they manage us? Moreover, this Underworld Abyss is a formation set up by a Demon Cultivator, meant for us to submit to the demon realm."
"Submit to the demon realm?" Hearing this made Lingfeng somewhat furious. He couldn't believe that all the officials of the Underworld were such timid individuals. Angrily, he said, "The Underworld has its own order. Since ancient times, good has triumphed over evil; do you really think you can submit to the demon realm and that they will treat you well?"
"Whether you treat us well or not is not up to you; we have been suffering in the Underworld!" the Fierce Ghost shouted.
Lingfeng covered his ears but still heard its words clearly, so he patiently replied, "The world operates on the principle of cause and effect. You committed evil deeds in your past life, and now you face the consequences. What do you have to complain about?"
"Evil deeds in my past life?" The Fierce Ghost looked at Lingfeng in disbelief, as if Lingfeng had just told a great joke. After a pause, its face turned purple with anger as it complained, "I don't even know what I was like in my past life; how could you possibly know? How can you be so sure that the Three Realms adhere to cause and effect? Isn't it said that the Buddha aims to save all beings? But look around..." The Fierce Ghost pointed at the surrounding souls and shouted unjustly, "Look at them! Some were innocently murdered, some died of illness, and others died trying to save others. Don't they deserve credit? Why don't those so-called Buddhas and gods uphold justice? Why must they send them to hell?"
Lingfeng was rendered speechless by this outburst. However, whether in the mortal realm or the celestial realm, who could guarantee that any person or deity was without flaws?
When the Buddha achieved enlightenment and ascended to the Western Paradise, he established a rule that women could not become Buddhas. Although this rule was later improved to allow women to become monks, it was clear that even during Siddhartha Gautama's time, there were biases between genders.
If even an enlightened Buddha could hold such views, what could be expected from those gods who attained immortality through cultivation?
Yet, Lingfeng did not refute the Fierce Ghost's words; instead, he lowered his head in contemplation.
Upon arriving in the Cultivation Realm, Lingfeng had encountered books like Water Margin. The content described how officials oppressed the people until they had no choice but to rebel. In modern terms, it was akin to celestial beings forcing ghosts to rebel against their fate!
Thinking this way, these souls could not endure the endless suffering of reincarnation or the relentless punishments of hell. Thus, the Demon Realm could exploit this psychological state of the souls and take advantage of their despair. With a few sweet words of temptation, those souls would easily be swayed.
But was the Demon Realm truly like that? Lingfeng did not know because he had never entered it; he had only seen some Demon Cultivators. However, whether through Demon Cultivation or Immortal Cultivation, the ultimate goal was to enter the celestial realm.
Some Demon Cultivators simply could not withstand the torment of Evil Thoughts and thus truly entered the Demonic Path, leading them into the Demon Realm where they engaged in endless conflict with the celestial realm.
"What's wrong? Why aren't you speaking?" the Fierce Ghost asked coldly.
Lingfeng sighed, his tone softening as he looked at those souls. With a hint of helplessness, he said, "I can understand your feelings, but why don't you consider this: if you truly submit to the Demon Realm, what will happen to the mortals living in this world? The Demon Realm has long sought to dominate the Three Realms for chaos and disorder, plunging innocent mortals into suffering. Don't you think about your descendants? If a war truly breaks out between Celestial and Demonic forces, what will they do?"
Lingfeng's passionate words came from his heart and were deeply moving. However, only a few souls listened; those who had entered the Underworld had long lost faith in life and were filled with anger. All they wanted was to escape reincarnation and avoid hellish torture.
Having said all this, Lingfeng did not wish to say more. Looking at those silent souls, he felt equally helpless.
After a moment of silence, misty clouds suddenly appeared beneath the feet of the ghosts, causing their descent to slow down.
"You are a mortal and should not be here. Moreover, unless you have the ability to ride the clouds, you will surely be smashed to pieces!" Perhaps touched by Lingfeng's words, the Fierce Ghost gently reminded him.
"Ride the clouds?" As the distance to the ground of the Underworld grew shorter, Lingfeng suddenly felt a chill in his heart. He was merely an early-stage Rotation of Light cultivator; how could he possibly ride the clouds?
As he faced the imminent danger of being turned into a meat paste, Lingfeng found himself at a loss.
Looking up at the ghosts again, he noticed that the mist beneath their feet seemed somewhat familiar.
"Control water vapor!" Lingfeng suddenly recalled the scene where Water Peak Master and Water Demon controlled water vapor. Although Water Demon had not cultivated to the level of riding the clouds, he could gather surrounding water vapor together to form cloud shapes, creating an illusion of riding the clouds.
With this thought, Lingfeng felt a surge of excitement as if he saw the dawn breaking.
Although Lingfeng was still unsure if he could gather water vapor together, the only option now was to give it a try.
With that in mind, Lingfeng cast aside his inner fears and released all his Spiritual Energy around him, forming a massive Spirit Energy Circle. He then repeatedly recited the incantation for Water Control Technique, attempting to gather the surrounding water vapor beneath his feet.
However, to Lingfeng's disappointment, his efforts yielded no results.
Seeing nothing but emptiness beneath him, not even a single drop of water, Lingfeng felt utterly disheartened.
Just as despair settled in, a voice from deep within him echoed once more with Evil Thoughts.
"You cannot use the spell to control water vapor because your cultivation is insufficient; your Spiritual Energy is lacking just a bit. If you can consume the remaining Thousand-Year Ginseng, it will fill the gap in your Spiritual Energy!"
Although Lingfeng despised Evil Thoughts and understood that its reminders were meant to prevent his destruction, he was even less willing to die. In his words, he had yet to revive Ling Xueer, had not seen Azure Vine one last time, and had not fulfilled his lifelong promise to Enchanting...
Lingfeng did not dwell too much on this; he did not want to accompany these ghosts with regrets.
Immediately, Lingfeng summoned the Lingfeng Thousand-Year Ginseng Tendril and without a second thought swallowed all of the Ginseng Tendril whole, not even bothering to chew.
Once the Ginseng Tendril was down, Lingfeng suddenly felt an unprecedented sense of satisfaction radiating from his entire body, and the Evil Thoughts vanished in that moment. The whole world seemed to fall silent, leaving only Lingfeng himself.
Lingfeng closed his eyes again and softly recited the Incantation of the Water Control Technique. Soon after, he felt the surrounding moisture gathering beneath his feet, as if it were eager to curry favor with him.
At the same time, Lingfeng noticed that his descent was slowing down, and he could hear the astonished murmurs of the surrounding spirits.
Upon reaching the ground, Lingfeng wiped the sweat from his brow, still shaken by the earlier harrowing scene.
"I really underestimated you!" Fierce Ghost also arrived on the ground, smiling at Lingfeng. "However, what you will face next is even more dangerous, to the point that it may make you wish you were dead!" With that, he transformed into a cloud of black smoke and vanished.
Lingfeng did not understand what Fierce Ghost meant and had no choice but to grab a nearby spirit and ask, "What did he mean just now?"
The spirit sighed and shook its head. "Although you are not an ordinary person, since you have come to the Underworld, you must naturally abide by its rules. Moreover, there are countless ghost kings who devour spirits and man-eating Yasha here. I fear your prospects are grim!"
"Ghost kings, Yasha!" Hearing these two terms made Lingfeng excited. He thought to himself that he had only heard of such figures in legends; it would be even better if he could meet them now.
In his excitement, he asked, "Tell me, is there a way to get to the Underworld?"
