The village chief of Niujia Village approached slowly, and the words of the know-it-all made Lingfeng hesitate to jump out of the window. Without time to think, Lingfeng quickly crawled under the know-it-all's bed.
Once under the bed, Lingfeng nearly vomited. A terrible stench filled the space, and upon closer inspection, he found a pile of unwashed clothes beneath him, alongside a night pot emitting a foul odor.
"This old guy really doesn't pay attention to hygiene!" Lingfeng silently lamented, instinctively holding his breath.
At that moment, the wooden door creaked open, and Lingfeng saw a pair of feet step inside.
"Old deadpan, why are you here? Haven't seen you for a month!" For some reason, the know-it-all pulled the village chief in and complained discontentedly.
The village chief shook off the know-it-all's hand, warily glanced around, and then focused his attention on what was under the know-it-all's bed.
Following the village chief's gaze, the know-it-all looked under the bed but could see nothing in the darkness except for a filthy night pot reflecting dim light.
"What are you looking at? My night pot is a treasure; I won't give it to you!"
Ignoring the know-it-all, the village chief stepped closer to the wooden bed.
Lingfeng couldn't help but feel anxious; his heart raced.
"Hey, if you want to borrow my night pot, just say so! Why act all mysterious?" The know-it-all complained while pulling out the night pot from under the bed. He even winked at Lingfeng before standing by the window with it, causing the unpleasant smell to push the village chief back two steps.
"If you don't mind it being dirty, take it! I use it as a toilet anyway!" said the know-it-all.
The village chief shot him an annoyed glare, waved his hand in front of his nose a couple of times, then gestured for the know-it-all to put down the night pot before finally sitting down on a wooden chair.
Wanshitong put down the chamber pot, looking indifferent, and glanced at the village chief, saying, "You still haven't answered my question!"
"An old man over a hundred years old, acting like a child, is that interesting?" the village chief replied irritably.
"Hey, what do you mean by that?" Wanshitong was unyielding, standing up and saying, "I can act like a child if I want to, it's better than you looking like a beggar's corpse with no smile on your face!"
"You..." The village chief was left speechless, staring in shock before finally getting up and walking toward the door.
Lingfeng had not yet taken a breath and felt a sense of relief when he saw the village chief heading outside. However, he did not expect Wanshitong to suddenly stand up and vanish like a ghost, blocking the wooden door with his hands on his hips, saying, "Do you think this is an inn? You can come and go as you please?"
Lingfeng had to hold back the breath he was about to exhale; it felt quite uncomfortable. But looking at the actions of Wanshitong and the village chief, it seemed these two were indeed old rivals.
The village chief sighed helplessly and said softly, "I just wanted to see if you had any matters to discuss!"
Lingfeng wasn't sure if the village chief was genuinely here to check on Wanshitong, but he knew that the village chief was worried and feared they might be sneaking into Niu Family Village, which was why he came to patrol.
"Four outsiders came here to probe into the Mandala Demon Realm's season. I didn't let them into the village and sent them away. But I know those people are definitely not ordinary, so I felt uneasy and came to check on you!" the village chief added.
Wanshitong snorted dismissively and then said, "So what if there are four outsiders? What can they do? Even if they held a knife to my neck, I wouldn't tell them the current season of the Mandala Demon Realm..." At this point, Wanshitong suddenly froze.
Lingfeng thought to himself that this was bad; it seemed his trap had already been noticed by Wanshitong.
"What’s wrong? You didn’t let out the secret of the Mandala Demon Realm's season, did you?" The village chief asked anxiously when he saw Wanshitong's grim expression.
Although the Know-It-All knew he had made a mistake, he couldn't bring himself to admit it and stubbornly said, "How could that be? I just suddenly remembered that I haven't watered the Mandala Demon Flower yet!" With that, he picked up the watering can to water the flower.
The village chief couldn't help but chuckle a couple of times, snatching the watering can from the Know-It-All and placing it on the ground. "Have you lost your mind? What are you watering Dahei for?"
The actions of the village chief and the Know-It-All reminded Lingfeng, who was hiding under the bed, of Azure Vine and Qing. It felt somewhat like the bond between brothers, yet also had a hint of the intimacy found in an old married couple, evoking both envy and amusement.
"It's so late; I need to sleep now. You should hurry back!" After a moment of silence, the Know-It-All issued an eviction order.
The village chief took a deep breath, casting a complex look at the Know-It-All before turning to leave, disappearing into the night.
Once the village chief had gone, the Know-It-All closed the door and turned around with a flushed face, looking under the bed. Anyone who was perceptive could tell this was a sign of impending anger.
Lingfeng finally let out the breath he had been holding for so long, scrambling out from under the bed without taking a breath and desperately inhaling the "fresh" air.
"You tricked me!" The Know-It-All glared at Lingfeng fiercely.
Lingfeng chuckled awkwardly before responding earnestly, "I didn't! How did I trick you?" He secretly found it amusing, thinking that this old man was too slow to catch on and only just realized it now.
The Know-It-All's face turned red with frustration, his wrinkles almost disappearing. After a moment, he shouted as if feeling wronged, "You still won't admit it? You dared to use reverse psychology to get me out of the Mandala Demon Realm!"
Lingfeng shrugged nonchalantly and replied innocently, "I didn't force you; you came out on your own!" Lingfeng was quite skilled at being shameless—not only could he argue cleverly but he also managed to shift all responsibility away from himself.
The Know-It-All was so angry he started stomping his feet but found himself at a loss for words. After a while, he reluctantly sat on the edge of the bed and muttered to himself, "Oh no, I've really gotten myself into big trouble this time!"
"What kind of trouble have you gotten into?" Lingfeng asked, puzzled.
"I..." the All-Knowing paused, gathering his thoughts before slowly saying, "The mention of months in the Cultivation Realm has always been a taboo, much like the Demon Spirit Mountain, which is completely forbidden to be spoken of by Demon Cultivators!"
Throughout the four seasons, it is a common occurrence for a year to be divided into twelve months, a well-known fact. However, in the Cultivation Realm, mentioning the months is strictly prohibited and even evokes fear. Although this ban is imposed by the Demon Cultivators, even cultivators from the other eight states refrain from discussing the current month.
"Why is that?" Lingfeng's expression turned serious. The fact that something could trouble the usually knowledgeable All-Knowing was certainly not trivial.
The All-Knowing's previously comical demeanor vanished, replaced by an unsettling gravity, as if a beautiful rainbow had suddenly turned black, bringing with it an overwhelming sense of dread.
After a moment of silence, the fragrance of the Mandala Demon Flower continued to waft through the air; as they say, people have emotions and grudges, but objects have no thoughts.
"You needn't worry so much; I won't tell anyone about this!" Lingfeng reassured him upon noticing the All-Knowing's unusual demeanor and realizing the seriousness of the situation.
The All-Knowing hesitated for a moment; his once-bright eyes dimmed, and his lips trembled violently as he slowly said, "Since you are so determined to find out about the current month, isn't it because of that matter?"
Lingfeng looked at him in confusion, not understanding what he meant.
"It's not that I don't want to tell you; it's just that this matter is of great importance. Although the prohibition on sharing information about the months in the Cultivation Realm comes from the Demon Cultivators, it is because this issue concerns the peace of the entire Cultivation Realm!"
The more Lingfeng listened, the more confused he became. He merely wanted to determine the location of Stone Mountain within Demon Spirit Mountain through the months to find where Monkey Head was cultivating. This shouldn't lead to such a significant disaster. Moreover, Lingfeng's intention in finding out was also to ensure stability in the Cultivation Realm!
However, since there were hidden circumstances here, Lingfeng naturally wished to know more. He nodded and said, "Yes, I am aware of this matter now, but I don't understand why it has such major implications!"
Wanshitong let out a heavy sigh, lowering his head as he slowly said, "There's no way around it. Since you already know the secret here, for the stability of the Cultivation Realm, you..." Wanshitong suddenly became somewhat ferocious, enunciating each word clearly, "Must—die!"
As soon as Wanshitong finished speaking, a large amount of purple light radiated from his body, and that purple light gradually transformed into the shape of the Mandala Demon Flower.
Lingfeng was startled; he never expected that his joke would lead to a life-threatening situation. He quickly stepped back and thought, "Since I'm in a difficult position now, if I pretend to be joking, he won't believe me anyway. Why not take this opportunity to extract information and then escape underground?" Having devised a plan, Lingfeng feigned despair as if he had no way out and slowly said, "If I have to die, at least let me die understanding!"
Wanshitong paused, gritting his teeth with tears in his eyes as he said, "I don't want to kill you either. Over the years, your personality is the only one similar to mine, and you're the only one I can get along with. However, I still have to ensure the safety of the Cultivation Realm!"
"Alright, alright, I understand your feelings. But can you tell me what exactly will happen?" Lingfeng grew somewhat impatient, and his expression of despair immediately vanished.
Wanshitong took a deep breath and surrounded himself with Mandala Demon Flowers throughout the entire room, effectively trapping Lingfeng within them to prevent his escape. This showed that he truly wanted to protect the safety of the Cultivation Realm and that the hidden secrets were indeed significant.
"If twelve symbolic crystals are collected and all twelve crystals are fused together in June, it will release an ancient beast, Zhu Long!"
Lingfeng was completely stunned; he had not anticipated such a secret hidden within the months of the Cultivation Realm. Upon hearing this news, Lingfeng felt a twinge of regret for his recklessness.
Zhu Long was an ancient beast. This beast had been sealed away by ancient cultivators and Demon Cultivators during ancient times. Once released, it would devour the sun and turn it into a candle in its mouth. Thus, when Zhu Long opened its mouth, the world would be filled with light; when it closed its mouth, darkness would envelop the world, bringing about night.
Furthermore, once Zhu Long was released, it would control the world's day and night. If that were to happen, it was likely that day and night would become indistinguishable.
