After he finished speaking, he waved his hand, and two soldiers stepped forward to restrain us, taking us away from the tent without further ado.
I felt anxious along the way, unsure of where Wei Yan was taking us or how he would test us.
We were brought to an open training ground. Dust swirled in the air, and the sounds of clashing weapons echoed around us as a group of soldiers trained vigorously under the scorching sun, their bare upper bodies glistening with sweat.
Wei Yan pointed to a clear area in the center of the training ground and said to us, "Do you see that empty space? There are various traps buried there. If you can make it from here to there without triggering any mechanisms, I will believe you have real skills!"
Shen Yi and I exchanged glances, both seeing the seriousness in each other's eyes.
Wei Yan was clearly trying to make things difficult for us, but since he dared to be so blatant about it, Zhuge Liang must have tacitly approved of his actions.
"Alright, we accept your challenge," Shen Yi nodded in agreement and then turned to me, "Are you ready?"
I took a deep breath and clenched my fists: "I'm ready!"
We stepped into the training ground, each step taken cautiously, fearful of triggering any traps.
The sun blazed overhead, and sweat trickled down my forehead, but I dared not let my guard down for a moment. I focused intently on my surroundings, searching for any signs of danger.
Suddenly, I felt my foot slip away beneath me, and I began to fall downward.
"Watch out!" Shen Yi reacted quickly, grabbing my hand and pulling me back from the edge of a trap.
"Whoa..." I gasped for breath, looking down to see a bottomless pit filled with sharp bamboo stakes that sent chills down my spine.
"Thank you," I said gratefully to Shen Yi.
"Be careful; this is just the beginning," Shen Yi said with a serious expression. He knew that the real test was only just beginning...
I steadied myself and smiled gratefully at Shen Yi: "Thank you; I'll be careful."
Shen Yi nodded slightly without speaking, his gaze continuing to search the ground. He took a pair of sunglasses from his pocket and put them on, then pulled out a palm-sized device from his backpack. The device was connected to a long antenna that swayed slightly as he moved, seemingly receiving some kind of signal.
"What are you doing?" I asked curiously.
Shen Yi did not turn around but calmly explained, "These sunglasses are polarized; they filter out the glare from the ground, making it easier to spot hidden traps. This device is a metal detector that can detect buried metal objects."
I suddenly understood; Shen Yi had clearly come prepared, which explained his calm demeanor.
"I found it!" Shen Yi suddenly stopped and pointed to a patch of ground not far ahead. "There’s a metal response here; this should be where the mechanism is located."
Following Shen Yi's finger, I looked at the ground, which appeared unremarkable and no different from the surrounding area.
"How do you know the mechanism is right here?" I asked in confusion.
Shen Yi pointed to several inconspicuous small stones on the ground and explained, "Look, these stones are arranged in a very regular pattern, forming a triangular shape. This should be a mark left intentionally by Wei Yan to indicate the location of the mechanism."
I then noticed those small stones; indeed, as Shen Yi said, they were arranged very neatly and would have been hard to spot without close inspection.
"Wei Yan is meticulous; we must not let our guard down," Shen Yi said as he took a small multifunctional military knife from his backpack. He crouched down and carefully cleared the dirt around the mechanism.
As the dirt was cleared away, a metal disk about a foot in diameter emerged, intricately carved with patterns that looked very ancient.
"What kind of mechanism is this?" I asked curiously.
Shen Yi examined the metal disk closely, frowning slightly as he pondered, "This should be an ancient pressure mechanism. Stepping on it will trigger the mechanism and activate the trap."
"What should we do?" I asked nervously.
After thinking for a moment, Shen Yi pointed to several stone slabs surrounding the metal disk and said, "Look, these slabs are similar in size and shape. We can replace the metal disk with one of them to pass safely."
I nodded, immediately understanding Shen Yi's plan. Together we lifted one of the stone slabs carefully and moved it over the metal disk before slowly lowering it down to ensure there were no gaps between the slab and the ground.
Shen Yi gently stepped on the stone slab to confirm its stability before saying to me, "Alright, we can go now."
We carefully stepped over the stone slabs and continued forward.
Along the way, we encountered various traps, including bottomless pits, sharp blade arrays, and falling boulders, all of which were skillfully neutralized by Shen Yi.
Wei Yan stood at the edge of the training ground, silently watching us, a hint of admiration flashing in his eyes.
Finally, we reached the other side of the training ground, successfully passing Wei Yan's test.
"You did well," Wei Yan said as he approached us, a look of approval on his face. "I admit that you have some skills, but I must remind you that the battlefield is no child's play; a moment's carelessness can cost you your life."
Shen Yi smiled slightly and replied respectfully, "Thank you for the reminder, General Wei. We will be careful."
I looked around and noticed that some soldiers on the training ground were curiously observing us, their eyes filled with admiration and confusion.
Suddenly, I felt a violent tremor beneath my feet; the ground began to shake violently as if an earthquake had occurred.
"What’s happening?" I exclaimed.
"Oh no, it seems we triggered some mechanism!" Shen Yi's expression changed drastically as he pulled me back.
However, it was too late. The ground in the center of the training area suddenly collapsed, revealing a massive pit. Shen Yi and I were caught off guard and fell into the deep pit...
