“Understand.”
Sparse responses followed.
The figure in the black robe pushed open the laboratory door and walked straight in.
It wasn't long before his voice came from inside the lab.
“The assessment begins now. Who is the first to sign up? Come in.”
“It’s me.”
As soon as he finished speaking, the boy whom Freya had seen in the Hiring Room stepped into the laboratory first.
However, he had barely been inside for less than a minute before he came out, looking somewhat pale. He didn’t say a word and simply walked past everyone, choosing to leave.
It was clear that he had failed the assessment.
Those who had yet to be assessed watched his departing figure with a sense of unease, wondering what kind of assessment could eliminate someone so quickly.
Freya observed the boy's retreating back and keenly noticed that his previously clean hands now faintly emitted a fishy smell and showed signs of having been washed.
Just as she pondered what this detail might signify, the voice of the figure in the black robe echoed again from within the laboratory.
“The second one, come in. Next time, I won’t call out one by one. As soon as someone exits, the next person should come in on their own!”
Naturally, the second to sign up was Freya. She withdrew her gaze, slightly adjusted her somewhat wrinkled Robe, and then pushed open the laboratory door to enter.
Compared to the dim lighting of the corridor outside, the laboratory was much brighter.
A large metal Experiment Table stood in the center, flanked by two rows of metal shelves filled with various potions and experimental tools. Beneath these shelves were cages covered with black cloth, from which Freya could vaguely see some unknown living creatures through the gaps. The strong smell of disinfectant mixed with a fishy odor emanated from these cages.
In the Standard Laboratory, the figure of the Black-Robed Wizard who had previously guided her was nowhere to be seen. Instead, another unfamiliar man dressed in a black robe with a pale complexion stood there.
He was currently looking at a list in his hand.
Upon noticing Freya's entrance, the man lifted his head and glanced at her indifferently, his expression somewhat cold as he spoke.
"I am Necromancy Instructor Leander. Freya Green, the records indicate that you are a Positive Energy System Second-Class Apprentice, correct?"
"Yes," Freya nodded. Her employment records contained her basic profile, which any instructor could access once they chose to.
He seemed to be cross-referencing the Apprentice Information in his hands. After a moment, he put away the document and said flatly, "Then there is no problem. Let's begin the assessment."
He then lightly snapped his fingers.
A chilling, almost tangible black mist suddenly appeared on the Metal Experiment Table, swirling like struggling Wraiths. Even from a distance, Freya could feel the dense Death Qi emanating from it, causing her to shiver involuntarily.
However, the black mist quickly dissipated, revealing a fist-sized, vividly colored spider and a standard set of Dissection Tools on the Experiment Table.
The spider was alive and immediately attempted to jump away upon its appearance. However, it was instantly trapped by an invisible force on the Experiment Table, lying on its back and struggling while emitting a piercing chirping sound.
"I have hired you as an experimental assistant. Although the work is not particularly difficult, it does require corresponding dissection knowledge. Now I want you to dissect it within one minute and extract its Venom Sac completely. Do you understand?"
Freya listened quietly to the content of the assessment and nodded.
Her eyes were fixed on the spider on the Experiment Table.
She had seen this type of creature in All Things Studies; it was an ordinary Venomous Color Spider that lived in humid areas. It was not a Demonized Creature but rather a common arthropod.
Its body structure was not very complex, but for some beginners who had just started dissecting, it could still pose a challenge.
Although Freya is an apprentice of the Positive Energy System, her knowledge in Basic Knowledge is quite extensive, to the point where even some more talented apprentices may not match her in this area. Of course, she also has some understanding of basic anatomy.
The content of this assessment is appropriate compared to the rewards.
Watching Freya walk up to the Experiment Table, Leander took out a transparent hourglass from behind him and flipped it over.
"One minute, starting now."
Freya glanced at the fine sand slowly flowing to the bottom of the hourglass and took a gentle breath.
Then she skillfully found a sharp knife among the instruments and steadily cut into the spider's limbs.
Although it was her first time dissecting a creature, with her strength at Knight's Pinnacle and a general understanding of such creatures, the dissection was not very difficult.
Soon, she neatly placed the limbs on one side, followed by the more complex body.
The spider's outer skin was gently pried open without touching the internal organs.
At this moment, the Color Spider was still alive, its strong vitality causing it to emit piercing cries, but the Spell hands surrounding it held it firmly in place.
Freya frowned slightly, put down her knife, and took a thin needle from the instruments. She directly stabbed it into the spider's head, silencing its cries abruptly.
This action raised an eyebrow from Leander nearby; his ash-gray face shifted slightly but showed no further reaction.
Unaware of Leander's subtle expression, Freya quickly continued to separate the spider's internal organs and exoskeleton in the order she had in mind, arranging them on the metal table.
Finally, she used tweezers to extract two red, round sac-like structures from the spider's head and placed them in a prepared tray.
At this moment, there was still a quarter of sand left in the hourglass.
The dissection was complete.
Freya put down the Dissection Tools and stood to the side, waiting for his evaluation.
Leander glanced at the items on the Experiment Table, revealing a satisfied expression. He looked up at Freya and said, "Very good. It's rare to achieve this level of dissection as an apprentice in the Positive Energy System. You even knew to disable the spider's vocal organs to avoid disturbances during the dissection. Although I don't want the spider to die unexpectedly, this awareness is commendable."
Hearing Leander's evaluation, Freya was taken aback. Her earlier action of stabbing the spider was simply out of a desire to minimize its suffering, but she hadn't realized it could be interpreted differently in Leander's eyes. Nonetheless, it was still a form of praise.
"Alright, you've passed the assessment. Now let's sign the employment Contract," Leander said as he took out a piece of parchment and a Feather Pen, placing them in front of Freya.
Freya looked over the details on the parchment; it was just a standard employment Contract with conditions similar to what she had seen on the Mission Board, so she readily signed her name.
"This is a six-month Contract. During this time, if I need you as an experimental assistant, I will notify you in advance. You must report on time; otherwise, you will have to pay me a penalty for breach of contract. You can leave now and wait for further notice." (To be continued)
