"What is that!?"
She focused her gaze on the room from which the sound came, her heart racing.
It was known that this area had been abandoned for a hundred years, and theoretically, there should be no living beings here except for Spirits. Yet now, there was a sound emanating from within.
"Could it be due to my condition again?"
Freya frowned slightly. Having encountered Spirits multiple times, she had long suspected that it was related to her own nature. However, aside from some known information, she had no particularly effective methods to deal with these entities.
Now, if that room indeed contained a Spirit, she might have to abandon the knowledge she had gathered. This would undoubtedly be a significant loss.
However, it was too early to draw conclusions. Without understanding the true situation, she could not retreat.
Narrowing her eyes slightly, Freya concealed the White Light Stone in her hand and gently drew out the Cross Sword from her waist. A faint current of energy began to spread around her.
Harnessing this surge of energy, she deftly approached the door of the room.
'Crack...'
The sound came again for the third time. Compared to the previous two instances, Freya could vaguely discern that it sounded like an object striking glass—a crisp sound that eased her tension slightly.
Because she knew that Spirits could not produce such tangible sounds; they existed between reality and illusion. Even if there were sounds, they would originate from reflections in their own minds.
"As long as it's not a Spirit, it will be easier!"
Exhaling lightly, Freya reached out to grip the doorknob, leaning her body against one side of the door as she twisted it firmly.
'Click'
The moment the door opened, a faint sour odor wafted out from inside.
Freya took another White Light Stone from her pouch. Rubbing it in her hands, its previously dim glow suddenly brightened intensely.
She reached out and flicked, and the White Light Stone was immediately bounced into the room.
With the fleeting White Light, Freya was able to see everything in the room, but it also made her previously relaxed mood tense up again.
"What is this!?"
In front of her appeared rows of massive black wooden racks, each topped with glass containers as large as buckets.
As the White Light Stone passed by, Freya suddenly discovered that inside those glass containers were curled-up embryos of unknown creatures.
The faint cracking sound came from one of these items.
"To think that experimental organisms preserved for a hundred years are still alive? This kind of technology would be considered top-notch even today."
Freya slowly walked into the room, feeling a bit shocked as she looked at everything around her.
The things sealed in the glass containers resembled the larvae of crawling animals, except that each had an additional appendage on top of its head that looked like a plant's tentacle, making them appear quite bizarre.
'Crack... Crack...'
The sound reappeared, and it seemed to grow more urgent as Freya approached.
Following the sound cautiously, Freya discovered it was coming from the plant-like appendage on top of one embryo tapping against the glass.
This particular embryo had a much longer appendage compared to the others, and its color was reddish-brown, with a round bulge at the tip.
It was this bulge that produced the tapping sound.
However, just as Freya wanted to get closer to take a better look at it, the bulge seemed to sense something and suddenly shrank back.
"Hmm? It can actually perceive my gaze? This ability..."
Watching the performance of the tentacles, Freya showed a hint of curiosity. Just as she was about to approach again, the protruding center suddenly trembled and almost instantly split open with a narrow slit.
It resembled an opened eyelid. A reversed pupil suddenly fixed its gaze on Freya.
In an instant, a strong sense of fear surged within Freya, as if she had seen something terrifying, causing her mind to race with thoughts of fleeing from this thing.
"Damn it!"
The peak of her fear left her no choice but to charge directly at the pupil instead of running away.
Bang!
The Cross Sword transformed into a long silver streak, slicing through the entire wooden frame before tilting and collapsing.
The numerous glass vessels on the frame did not shatter due to its collapse; instead, they rolled away, producing a clattering sound.
Without the gaze of the Slit Pupils upon her, Freya quickly regained her composure.
She stood there, drenched in cold sweat, staring blankly at the destroyed wooden frame. The fear that had surged from deep within her would have likely terrified an ordinary person to death if it weren't for her exceptionally strong willpower.
"This is... mental contamination..."
After a long while, as she slowly recovered, Freya wiped the cold sweat from her face and murmured.
This kind of direct attack on the mind was utterly unavoidable; there was no chance to react—just one glance could lead to being affected.
"I didn't expect there to be such terrifying things here!"
She stared anxiously at the embryos scattered on the ground and immediately spotted that particular exception from earlier.
To know that her mental power is now infinitely close to the Official Wizard, under normal circumstances, she would not be affected by mental-type Spell attacks. Firstly, although such mental attacks have countless benefits, they consume an extraordinary amount of mental energy. Secondly, if the caster fails, there will be a backlash effect that is half as strong, which poses a deadly danger compared to other Spells.
However, this creature made Freya clearly feel that it had crossed her instinctive mental protection and directly induced her mind, which was the most terrifying aspect.
Calming her emotions, Freya bypassed the scattered wooden frame and approached the embryo.
With a blank expression, she raised the Cross Sword and thrust it down fiercely at the top of the vessel.
The sharp blade easily pierced through the lid and stabbed into the base of the tentacle.
"Ahhhh!!!"
A scream like that of a young girl came from the mouth of the embryo. However, as the Cross Sword went deeper, the sound gradually changed and eventually disappeared.
Watching as streams of blue liquid flowed out from the gaps in the blade, Freya finally withdrew the Cross Sword. Then she gently turned it, and the lid of the vessel was immediately sliced off.
The contaminated Light Blue Liquid slid out along with the embryo's corpse. Freya lightly touched its tentacle on top with the Cross Sword. After confirming there was no reaction, she crouched down and took out a dagger, easily cutting it off. She wrapped it in a piece of white cloth and placed it into her waist pouch.
Although she did not know what kind of creature this was, its abilities were quite terrifying. This made Freya somewhat alarmed about what this former Wizard Organization had been researching. (To be continued)
