"Although possessing a terrifying assassination ability and corrosive blood, her intelligence has not grown due to excessive physical development, resembling that of an ordinary beast. It remains uncertain whether there is a possibility of further evolution in the future."
Freya gripped the dagger in her hand, her gaze scanning the surroundings. The strong acrid smell forced her to take partial energy breaths to avoid poisoning.
The creature she had just pinned to the ground was still alive, struggling with wide-open eyes, emitting a strange cry reminiscent of a woman's voice. Its antennae twisted incessantly, but the protrusion at the top did not open to reveal the fear-inducing eyes as it had when she entered the room.
"There are still two more..."
Although she could not see them, the information reflected by the force field allowed her to vaguely determine the general locations of these creatures.
With her strength as a Great Knight, even this minimal information was sufficient for her to make many judgments.
Ding.
Freya lightly brushed her Black Dagger, and a ring of red light flashed. A strong burning sensation gradually emanated from between the dagger's blades.
Though she had quickly taken down three of them earlier, she realized that the rapid growth of these creatures had increased their defensive capabilities and the corrosiveness of their blood. Ordinary steel weapons were practically useless against them. She wondered if the Scorching Touch enhanced with Fire Element Energy Particles would be effective.
A slight breeze swirled in the room as Freya remained vigilant and suddenly turned around.
With a swift motion, she slashed backward with her dagger, creating a red line that cut through the air, a fleeting spark igniting momentarily.
Hiss!!!
A dull sensation akin to cutting metal appeared in her hand.
In Freya's line of sight, a creature roughly equal in height to her suddenly appeared, its massive head gaping wide, sharp teeth held firmly against a dagger. The intense heat was slowly scorching its flesh.
"Is this the level of defense we've reached?"
Seeing the damage caused by Scorching Touch, Freya kicked her right leg forward with force.
A slender cone of white airflow gathered at her toes and exploded with a loud bang.
Boom!!!
A large circular crack spread across the scales on the creature's chest, blue blood slowly oozing onto the ground.
The creature was knocked back a few steps by the sudden strike, and Freya seized the opportunity to thrust her dagger forward again.
Sizzle!
A slender red tendril extended from the tip of the dagger, piercing through its lower jaw and throat.
Watching the creature slowly collapse, Freya quickly wiped off a bit of blood that had splattered onto her toes. However, she still felt a slight burning sensation.
Quickly rubbing off the blood on her toes, Freya ran to the left without hesitation.
Just as she left that spot, a massive rumbling sound erupted from behind her.
Boom!
A massive three-clawed footprint was clearly imprinted on the ground where she had just stood, but there was nothing there now.
Freya glanced back at the mark with slight shock. With the intensity of that physical attack, if she hadn't been a speed-type knight, she would have likely been crushed by that blow.
"The growth rate of such creatures... it must have surpassed the Conservation Law of energy."
It is known that every world adheres to this law, which is as true as any principle. But the creatures Freya faced now seemed to exceed her understanding.
From an embryo no larger than a human head to such a colossal being in just over ten minutes—this was not a balloon.
There was no time for further thought. After dodging the strike from the invisible creature, Freya immediately threw her Red Dagger.
The Fire Element Energy Particle that had been attached to it expanded immediately after leaving her hand, transforming into a long crimson tendril that shot toward that spot.
Although the original version of Scorching Touch was not as powerful as the optimized version, it belonged to area attacks.
Hiss...
The shot tendril accurately struck a mass of black shadow in mid-air. The previously empty space suddenly revealed a layer of subtle ripples.
In Freya's sight, a dinosaur-like creature about two meters tall slowly emerged. It squinted its crimson slit pupils, fixating on her.
Under its predatory gaze, Freya noticed that this creature had undergone a stark transformation compared to the previous ones.
Its once tender scales now gleamed with a black metallic luster. The tendrils atop its head seemed to have curled up, and a long slit opened up in the raised middle section, revealing sharp pupils inside that also stared at her motionlessly.
As the pupil at the tip of the tentacle fixed its gaze on her, a profound sense of fear surged within Freya.
However, having experienced this once before, she immediately turned her head away, ignoring the tentacle.
The howling wind roared behind her as Freya leaped into the air, a swirl of Azure Wind mixed with violent white currents enveloping her.
A faint sense of danger compelled her to confront the strange Synthetic Creature.
Calmly drawing another dagger from her side, Freya focused on the creature below that was lifting its head, her gaze sharpening.
A circle of white mixed with red scorching currents rapidly coalesced around the dagger, quickly forming a short sword about fifty centimeters long.
A subtle buzzing sound emanated from above.
“Final Chapter - Blade of Explosion.”
The soft whisper mingled with the roar of the currents suddenly echoed in the air.
‘Pfft.’
The sharp current easily pierced through the black scales atop its head, but just as Freya aimed to drive it through completely, the coiled tentacle shot toward her as if it had a will of its own.
The previously opened Slit Pupils widened again, revealing clusters of fine spikes exposed to the air like a brown-red venomous snake.
A strong sense of crisis suddenly arose. Without time to think further, Freya swiftly drew her dagger and slashed horizontally at the tentacle.
" Ding! "
The short sword, condensed with the sensation of heat and Scorching Touch, seemed to strike against a piece of soft steel. After a crisp sound, Freya suddenly bent down, and the tentacle behind her unexpectedly turned back, launching another attack towards the back of her head.
" Bang! "
In the small room, a figure darted past. Freya slid about one or two meters on the ground before coming to a stop. Opposite her, the creature lay flat on the ground, a burning Red Flame dagger deeply embedded in its eye socket.
Freya leaned against the wall behind her, a trace of blood trickling from the corner of her mouth, while she squinted at the tentacles still writhing above its head.
Although she had dodged the sharp tip of the tentacle at the last moment, she was still knocked aside by its immense force and sustained a minor injury. This was the first time she had been harmed since arriving here; however, it was fortunate that she had managed to eliminate it.
"Two different creatures can actually coexist peacefully and possess distinct consciousnesses. It must be impossible without some special factor!"
Freya coldly watched as the Tentacles gradually ceased their writhing and finally slumped down. She then approached, crouched down, and grasped the dagger embedded in its eye socket.
" Psst! "
As the dagger was pulled out, a stream of Azure liquid followed.
Freya took out a Test Tube from her waist pouch and gently caught it. After collecting some other parts of this creature, she stood up.
Although biological research was not her primary expertise, this peculiar creature, which transcended common logic, held significant research value for her.
Especially its characteristics of mental contamination and rapid growth; once she cracked its secrets, the rewards would undoubtedly be substantial.
After finishing these tasks, she slightly furrowed her brows and scanned the room that had originally felt tidy.
The attack from these creatures had left it in complete disarray, with pockmarked and corroded traces everywhere.
Suddenly, her gaze locked onto the bookshelf at the far end of the room, and her mind went blank.
There, a long blue streak splattered across it, with most of the paper books easily corroded to nothing, leaving only a few spared.
But this was enough to make Freya's heart ache; these were precious pieces of knowledge!
Yet, knowledge that had been passed down for a hundred years was destroyed just like that!
Almost instinctively, she rushed to the bookshelf and carefully searched for any books that had not been tainted by the liquid, but in the end, she only found seven undamaged ones.
Looking at the few books in her hands, Freya's eyes were filled with regret, but ultimately there was nothing more to be done; she let out a heavy sigh.
"Alas..."
Cautiously placing the remaining books close to her body, Freya straightened up. In this laboratory area, aside from the other two passages and three doors, she had already searched everything else. In her view, aside from these experimental creatures, the knowledge on this bookshelf was the most valuable.
Now that most of the books had been damaged, there was no point in lingering over them.
However, even so, this haul was still significant.
As she glanced regretfully at the books marked with corrosion, just when Freya was considering whether to leave now, she noticed an inconspicuous bulge in one of the compartments at the very bottom of the bookshelf.
The protrusion was only the size of a finger, and if one wasn't paying attention, it would be completely unnoticed. Previously, it had even been blocked by a book.
"Is it a hidden compartment?"
Looking at the shape of the protrusion, Freya made a somewhat uncertain guess about its function.
She reached out and gently pressed down on the protrusion.
'Pop.'
With a slight crisp sound, the protrusion retracted, and the original book compartment immediately opened up into a parallel circular ring. At the same time, the entire massive bookshelf began to move slowly.
Freya took a few steps back, frowning slightly as she watched the movement of the bookshelf. Gradually, a dark room appeared behind it, and a strong, foul odor began to waft out from that room. (To be continued)
