Chapter Two Hundred Seventy-Eight:
Freya no longer hesitated and quickly ran back in the direction she came from.
The so-called Dream Eater, that strange Alien Creature, was capable of injuring even Spirits stronger than herself, which meant she would definitely not be a match for it.
Although her stay in this ancient ruin was not very long, the gains were much richer than she had imagined.
Those precious pieces of ancient knowledge, even if they could not provide her with substantial benefits, were invaluable for research or as resources for exchange.
Different Passageways rushed past her at her speed.
As she turned a corner, Freya suddenly stopped.
In a concealed corner at that turn, two Tall Shadows dressed in black Robes were lying on the ground at an angle.
They seemed to be asleep, and Freya could even hear their steady breathing.
Cautiously approaching, she gently waved her hand, and the flames above her head slowly floated toward the two individuals.
The orange-yellow light dispelled the darkness in that corner and illuminated their faces.
However, when Freya saw their faces clearly, her heart sank immediately.
The skin of the two black-robed wizards appeared to have been peeled away, revealing red and white muscle tissue underneath.
The eyes, devoid of eyelids, were wide open, and where the nose should have been were two thin hollows, with the flesh on either side gently quivering from breathing.
Yet even so, neither of them showed any signs of blood flowing out.
In fact, within Freya's perception, both still exhibited active signs of life, as if they were merely asleep.
"Damn it, what did they encounter?" Freya cursed unconsciously.
Any trap in this ancient ruin was exceptionally dangerous, far beyond anything she had encountered in previous secret realms.
Feeling a chill in her heart as she glanced at the terrifying appearance of the two, Freya quickly decided to bypass them and sprint away at full speed.
At this moment, the red mark in her right eye had stopped bleeding, but Freya could distinctly feel that something seemed to have appeared in her right eye.
As her eye moved, a faint stinging sensation arose.
"I need to get out of here as soon as possible!"
Freya made up her mind.
Meanwhile, the strange figure, Spirit, seemed to have truly fallen silent after their conversation; even with Freya's special perception, she could not sense his presence.
It seemed he might have really suffered some serious injury.
Half an hour later.
The scorching dark passageway gradually began to feel a bit chilly.
A bone-chilling cold wind blew in from afar.
"We're here!"
Feeling the temperature drop, Freya squinted her eyes slightly as she ran.
The armor she wore had been completely melted away by the strange gray flames, leaving only a thin white inner garment. While it didn't expose her skin, it certainly offered no warmth.
Looking around, Freya frowned but still reached down to grab the ground.
With a whoosh, the black soil beneath her was controlled and quickly flew up to envelop her, slowly forming into a rough black robe.
She patted the earthen garment she had fashioned and let out a slight sigh.
"It seems I'll have to make do with this for now."
After solving the problem of warmth, Freya quickly arrived at the previous Flesh Wall, where the wall had already refrozen into ice not far away.
As Freya approached, the Flesh Wall automatically parted, returning to a normal passageway.
Freya walked expressionlessly to the frozen wall, extending her hand to lightly touch the icy surface. Then, she suddenly pressed down hard with her palm.
Crack!
A dense network of black cracks rapidly appeared in her palm.
Satisfied with the cracks that had expanded to a certain extent, Freya applied more force.
Crash!
The Ice Wall shattered into a large hole in the shape of a person, and countless white snowflakes rushed in from outside.
Stepping out of the Passageway, the cold air from the mountains instantly jolted Freya's spirit.
Suddenly, as she stepped out of the ruins, a thread of something intangible gradually detached from her consciousness. Freya knew that it was a signal related to the Abyss Contract established with that shadowy Spirit.
Pausing for a moment, she glanced back at the rapidly healing Ice Wall before quickly heading down the mountain.
She remembered well what that shadow had said; the so-called Dream Eater, that strange Alien Creature, had already marked her right eye. Although everything seemed fine now, it was unpredictable when it might suddenly appear beside her.
Before understanding exactly what this thing was, she dared not engage in battle with this strange creature.
As she moved forward, the surrounding cold climate gradually returned to a normal temperature, and thick volcanic ash filled the air.
Freya continued downward without hesitation, moving even faster than when she ascended.
Three hours later.
The red-black ground finally came into her view. Not far from the foot of the mountain, a silver carriage was quietly parked there, with two tall white steeds leisurely eating the hay on the ground.
Upon seeing the carriage, Freya lightly snapped her fingers, causing the two white horses to stop eating and run towards her direction.
Five minutes later, Freya returned to the carriage, shaking off the dirt from her clothes and changing into a set of red leather armor.
The carriage moved steadily back along the original path.
Inside the carriage, now dressed in normal clothes, Freya let out a sigh of relief.
Glancing out the window at the receding Saruhah Volcano, she then took out a small mirror to check her appearance.
Her face showed no significant changes, but Freya quickly noticed a twisted gray thin line appearing in her right pupil.
That thin line seemed alive; upon realizing it had been discovered, it immediately burrowed forcefully into her pupil.
Suddenly, Freya felt a sharp pain in her right eye and instinctively covered it.
"Ugh."
Red streaks began to flow down through the gaps in her palm.
The pain seemed to originate from her mental energy or soul; even her resilient willpower struggled to withstand it.
However, the pain gradually faded after just a minute.
Even so, Freya felt as if her mental energy had been drained by more than half, and her normally healthy complexion was slowly turning pale.
"The trace of a Dream Eater."
Straightening up slightly, she looked at the blood-red liquid in her palm with a complex expression.
This creature was beyond her current knowledge; it seemed to belong to some kind of curse, yet it was alive. Most importantly, it fed on devouring mental souls.
After a moment of thought, Freya slowly pulled out a black object from her waist pouch that resembled a shriveled tongue.
"If mental energy is its food, then the Scorpion Tail made from similar ingredients might be of some help."
Looking at the black tongue in her hand, a glimmer of determination flashed in Freya's eyes.
She reached out and gently touched the black tongue, a streak of Azure light flashed, and the tip was easily severed.
Immediately, Freya closed her eyes and directly stuffed the tip into her mouth.
After chewing it vigorously, she swallowed.
A faint chill surged from her stomach to the top of her head, and for a moment, Freya felt her previously consumed mental energy becoming hazy.
This made her pale face turn even whiter.
"Although the effect is not as good as when made into a potion, it can still suppress mental energy to some extent."
Just as she was trying to suppress her mental energy with Scorpion Tail's tongue, suddenly, a black rabbit jumped through the carriage window and landed inside.
'Thud!'
The rabbit stood firmly on the table in front of Freya, its pitch-black eyes devoid of any whites, looking at her weakened state with a mocking expression.
"Hehe, theoretically, this method can weaken the traces of Dream Eater, but you can't stay in this state forever, can you?"
It opened its mouth to speak, its voice raspy and carrying an eerie vibe.
"It's you," Freya weakly glanced at the rabbit and said. "Our contract has been fulfilled; why haven't you left yet? And what is wrong with your rabbit body?"
The Black Rabbit is clearly the result of that figure's Spirit possessing it.
It sat cross-legged on the table in a human-like manner, pulling out a carrot from who knows where, nibbling on it while sighing.
"It's not that I don't want to leave; it's just that I was tricked by that Dream Eater while helping you. Although I've already broken free from the ruins' suppression, for now, I can only appear in this possessed form, and my book is still with you, as you Understand."
Upon hearing his words, Freya raised her hand without hesitation and tossed the thick book at her waist onto the table in front of him with a loud thud.
"Hehe, many Thanks."
Looking at the book before him, the possessed Black Rabbit struggled to pick it up and then stuffed it into its mouth.
Its rabbit mouth, which was only the size of a finger, surprisingly expanded to the size of a human head, revealing a maze of Fangs. As it swallowed the book, it made a strange gulping sound.
This made Freya, who was watching nearby, feel somewhat nauseous.
Satisfied, it rubbed its slightly bulging belly and let out a contented burp.
"Don't look at me like that; it's safer here, isn't it?"
"Hmph."
Ignoring his words, Freya took out a mirror and began to gaze into her right eye.
She discovered that after suppressing her mental power, the activity of the gray line had indeed decreased significantly.
After a moment of contemplation, she slowly extended her hand, and a slender strand of Azure energy was gradually condensing at the tip of her index finger, forming the shape of a scalpel.
A faint Azure Wind Flow surrounded the blade's tip, emanating a sharp and intense aura, as if she intended to do something to her right eye.
For a wizard, as long as the injury is not life-threatening, most wounds can be healed.
Even severed arms and legs can be restored through regeneration or by grafting limbs from other beings.
Although important areas like the eyes are somewhat complex, they are not insurmountable challenges.
However, according to Freya's knowledge, regenerated body parts are still inferior to the original ones.
But in this situation, it was not the time to consider such matters.
Just as the energy blade was steadily approaching the pupil of her right eye, Black Rabbit, who was sitting at the table, stood up leisurely and said,
"Don't bother. Even if you gouge out your eye, you won't be able to erase that trace. That trace is embedded in your mental power; the gray line is merely a facade. Moreover, this action will anger the Dream Eater and may accelerate its passage through dimensions to consume your soul."
"Mm?"
The energy blade came to an abrupt halt as Freya raised her head and frowned.
"Do you have any good ideas?"
"Hehe, I know a few things, after all, I was once one of the wizards who encountered such creatures." He walked to the table and picked up a black Feather Pen. "You don't need to be constantly wary of me as a Spirit; our initial meeting was truly just a misunderstanding. Moreover, in a sense, my situation is quite similar to yours now. Let me introduce myself; before I died, my name was Klein."
"I'm not just wary of your form." Freya slowly dissipated the energy blade in her hand, looking at him writing strange characters on the table.
"Oh? What else is there?" Without pausing his writing, Klein moved his ears slightly and then discarded the feather, looking satisfied at the text on the table.
"Forget it, you don't need to tell me; I already know your name, Freya Green."
"Hmm?" Hearing him call her name directly, Freya frowned and said with a hint of hostility, "How do you know that?"
Most wizards' names are known only among friends. This world is not like the Earth of the past; here, a wizard's true name is a mark, a symbol of identity.
If a skilled prophecy wizard obtains another wizard's true name, they can predict their privacy through some special methods.
Even some powerful beings' names hold incredible power.
"I just happened to see the signature on the contract," he waved his hand casually.
However, Freya narrowed her eyes slightly, watching Klein, who appeared harmless like a Black Rabbit, with a wary gaze.
The Abyss Contract she prepared had confidentiality clauses; although both parties signed it, they could not see each other's names. Yet this strange Spirit...
"You can actually look at the Abyss Contract without suffering from soul burning. It seems that what you said about coming from the Black Sea might also be false. Or perhaps this name Klein is also questionable; it means the Abyss Contract cannot bind you at all."
"Oh? Are you really that concerned about this?" Klein looked up in surprise at Freya's serious attitude towards names. "Does it really matter where I come from or what I'm called?"
"This is the foundation of our cooperation!" Freya insisted.
Although the Spirit named Klein was quite peculiar, Freya could vaguely sense that this form also imposed significant constraints on him.
At least, he currently posed no threat to her; if any conflict arose between them, she still had a trump card specifically designed to counter Spirits that she had yet to use.
Moreover, the most important point was that Freya had already noticed he seemed to be affected by the Dream Eater and, for some reason, had to rely on her.
Otherwise, it would have been better for Freya to simply walk away when she threw the thick book.
After a long moment of looking into Freya's determined gaze, Klein seemed to give in. He shrugged his shoulders and said, "Alright, I admit that most of the Abyss Contracts have no binding power over me, but my name is Klein. As for whether I come from the Black Sea, that's a secret I can't share with you. Is that satisfactory?"
