Chapter 286:
Without a word, in the dim light, Rand waved his hand.
Freya lightly snapped her fingers, and a strand of yellow flame burst forth from between her fingers, floating in the air and illuminating the room.
The room appeared to be a simple study, with two rows of brown bookshelves placed against the walls. In addition to the books on the shelves, there were also some black Raven Sculptures.
In the center of the room was a faded mahogany desk, accompanied by several black High-Back Chairs.
On the desk was a thick stack of papers, and Rand was sitting behind it.
However, when Freya turned her gaze toward him, she was slightly taken aback.
Rand's face, which could not be considered handsome but was humble, had transformed into a strange Black Crow head.
At that moment, the crow head was looking at her with calm eyes.
"What happened to your head?"
"It's just an accident; it will return to normal in a few days," Rand said, touching his head and grinning with his beak.
He seemed reluctant to elaborate on this matter and pointed to a nearby chair, indicating for Freya to sit down.
"I already know the purpose of your visit. I didn't expect you to reach Crystallization Level before me; it truly surprises me. However, I don't have many Crystallization Ritual Materials here. I can only provide you with the most basic ones. You might find the rest in Milly's Toy Room."
With that, he tossed a wooden toy head toward Freya.
"This is proof of the Toy Room; without it, you won't be able to enter."
Taking the fist-sized head, Freya looked at it before putting it back into her waist pouch.
After a pause, she said in a low voice, "I've already learned some things about you from Tali, but I still want to understand more specifically. Are you planning to take revenge for your father?"
Rand had always been one of the few close friends Freya had in this world.
During her apprenticeship, without Rand's help, even if she managed to become an Official Wizard, it would have been much more difficult.
Now Rand was in trouble. Given her personality, she would definitely get involved.
Seeing Freya's serious expression, Rand gently nodded and spoke in an unusually calm tone. "Yes, those people from the Quictor Family must pay the price for what they have done. Even if my family chooses to temporarily retreat to the Underworld, I will cut off their heads one by one as a tribute to my father."
Although he appeared very calm, Freya could sense the deep hatred through Rand's crow-like eyes.
Suddenly, it seemed Rand thought of something and chuckled lightly. "By the way, among those people, there is someone who has some connection to you."
"Someone connected to me?" Freya raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"
"Do you remember James?" Rand said meaningfully.
“James?” Freya fell into deep thought, and after a moment, she raised her head and said, “You are James Quicto?”
“That's right, that guy. His half-brother Light Quicto is also involved,” Rand whispered.
Freya fell silent. She remembered how James had relentlessly pursued her when she left the academy. If it weren't for her skills, she would have likely died in the academy's forest, becoming nothing more than fertilizer.
After she killed James, she had left hastily without much concealment due to time constraints, so it was likely that the academy had put out a bounty on her.
Thinking for a moment, she said directly, “You mean my arrival has been discovered.”
“Not yet, at least not for now,” Rand shook his head and continued, “However, it might be soon. According to my informant within the Quictor Family, they have hired a Great Prophet from outside to eliminate wizards like me who are waiting for revenge. Anyone who has been tainted by Quikto's resentment will be detected. If you go to the Toy Room now to gather resources and leave afterward, you still have time; otherwise, in a few days, you won't be able to leave.”
“Oh?” Freya looked at Rand in front of her and slowly revealed a faint smile.
“Is that so? Anyway, I'm not in a hurry to leave. And it seems like you're not too anxious either; I assume you have some preparations, right?”
Rand was slightly taken aback but then smiled as well.
“You guessed it right. No wonder you're the best among our peers. But are you sure you want to get involved? This is a conflict between my family and Quikto, which doesn't concern you much.”
“As long as it concerns you,” Freya replied casually. “Aren't we friends? Besides, I don't believe that if I help you this time, you won't even show any gratitude.”
Silence followed. Rand's previously relaxed gaze became somewhat serious at this moment.
After a long while, he took a deep breath and spoke in a somewhat somber tone.
"I didn't expect that among so many people, including those in the family who were close to my father, you would be the third one to come directly to help me, aside from those two outside. It seems I didn't misjudge people back then."
"Hehe, let's not talk about that anymore." Freya waved her hand and smiled. "Let's focus on the specifics. Of course, if it gets too troublesome, I might reconsider."
"Alright." Gathering his emotions, Rand pulled out a parchment map from a pile of documents on the desk and spread it out on the table.
Freya's expression also became serious.
...
Five Hours.
The sky was somewhat gloomy, making the already dark forest even dimmer.
Outside the hidden Stone House, more than ten apprentices dressed in Gray Robes stood solemnly in a line. In front of them stood a middle-aged man in a green Robe, earnestly explaining something.
Not far away, Freya and the later arrivals, Lani and Rand, stood on an open space beside the Stone House.
"Freya, the one you need to deal with is not James' brother but another member of the Quictor Family named Willy. He is a wizard specializing in Plant Energy. He reached the peak of Vaporization last year and is now almost at Liquefaction Level. Here are his specific details; take a quick look."
Rand, still with his crow-like appearance, pulled out a transparent crystal ball from behind him and tossed it into her hands.
Connecting her mental energy to the crystal ball, she soon severed the link. She casually crushed the crystal ball in her hand.
"If the information above is true, you will see his head in less than ten minutes," Freya said quietly.
Hearing Freya's confident words, Rand smiled and didn't mind.
"Oh? Is that so? Then I will wait for your good news. And here, if anything happens, just drink this. As long as it's not too troublesome, it can be resolved."
With that, he handed over a test tube filled with pink liquid.
A faint odor of decay wafted from the test tube. Freya frowned and suddenly thought of something, her eyes lighting up.
"Oh? You actually brought this out. It seems you are well prepared."
"Of course, this time I am determined to succeed. After we succeed, we will follow in the footsteps of our family and infiltrate the Underworld. It is estimated that we won't be developing on the surface for a long time," Rand said solemnly.
"Heh, anyway, your Evil Crow Clan is itself a Bloodline of underground creatures. There's nothing wrong with going back there," Freya understood.
"That's true," Rand paused. "Alright, I've covered everything that needs to be explained. In a moment, I will leave with Lani first. I've already set up bait at specific locations for their pursuit route; we just need to wait there."
"No problem."
Freya nodded lightly, glancing at Lani, who was standing behind Rand and seemed a bit evasive.
Compared to her previous impression, she had changed a lot.
Moreover, she seemed to have just recently advanced to a wizard; her mental state was still unstable, and it appeared she was affected by her father's death, causing her personality to become gloomy. She only exchanged a few words with Rand while ignoring everyone else.
"Mm."
After finishing with Freya, Rand took Lani's hand and walked over to the group of apprentices, exchanging a few words with the man in the green robe.
Soon after, the green-haired man pulled out a pouch from somewhere and began distributing red fruits to the apprentices.
Watching them eat, both of them displayed satisfied expressions.
Standing not far away, Freya suddenly felt that the few people who had originally exuded an apprentice's aura had transformed, almost resembling Official Wizards.
"Is it a temporary boost to their mental strength? It seems these individuals are now Undead Warriors of the Benifin Family," Freya thought calmly.
Suddenly, with a 'thud', Silver-Haired Tali in a Gray Robe jumped down from a tree and exchanged a few words with Rand.
Then, the more than ten temporarily empowered apprentices quickly dispersed, heading deeper into the forest.
At that moment, Rand turned around and waved at Freya before turning back with the others to leave.
Before long, only Freya remained beside the Stone House.
She glanced at the gradually dispersing Stone House and let out a light sigh.
"I should leave as well. I didn't expect to encounter such a situation right after arriving here," she lightly complained as she drew her Cross Sword from her waist and walked toward her designated position.
Three hours later.
By a stream in the dark forest.
Several individuals dressed in black robes hurried past, their leather boots making a sharp sound as they stepped on the water.
They wore maple leaf-shaped badges on their chests, which were the special insignia of Elgreen Academy.
Leading them was a tall, thin young man with a gloomy expression, holding a red wooden plaque that emitted a faint glow.
After walking for another ten minutes, he looked up at the distant forest, suddenly stopping and raising his hand.
"According to the predictions of the Great Prophet, ahead is the gathering place of the Benifen traitors. Everyone stay alert; you have already seen how difficult those guys can be."
A woman with fiery red hair standing behind him smirked dismissively.
"Don't worry. I've had contact with that Rand before; he's just an average wizard skilled in Summoning. As long as we keep close to him, he won't be able to do anything. We just need to watch out for Loras; he's the one who kills without blinking. The others are just ordinary ants."
Hearing her words, the leading Black-Robed Wizard frowned and turned to look directly at her.
"Roger, I hope you keep such thoughts to yourself. You don't really understand Rand at all. Moreover, as far as I know, you were involved when Rand's father was killed. He might drag you down with him if he dies. The Evil Crow Clan's Secret Art is not as simple as you think."
The woman felt uneasy under his intense gaze and instinctively took half a step back. She wanted to argue but ultimately only let out a cold snort and fell silent.
Satisfied with her reaction, he then scanned the other wizards behind him and said in a deep voice.
"Alright, everyone stay focused and try not to hide your trump cards. After this, the Benifin Family will completely disappear from the Dis Mountain Range, and there will be no more Evil Crow Clan!"
No one spoke; they merely nodded indifferently.
He didn't care about the situation. After glancing at the wooden plaque in his hand, he turned and continued forward.
Half an hour later.
A few people hurriedly emerged from the forest, looking somewhat disheveled, in front of the now ruined Stone House.
The leader glanced at the Stone House, which was slowly disintegrating on the ground, his expression darkening.
Looking at the wooden plaque that had already come to a standstill, he gripped it tightly. With a crack, the plaque shattered.
"They must have discovered something to split up like this. However, their presence is still here; they shouldn't be far."
After a moment's thought, he pulled out a handful of black powder from behind him and waved it in the air in a strange manner while murmuring an incantation.
The powder quickly dissipated into the air, faintly forming a black ribbon that split into several strands extending deep into the forest.
These ribbons varied in color and kept twisting.
Fixing his gaze on these ribbons, he headed straight for the darkest one, which belonged to Rand and Lani.
"Everyone split up and kill them!"
Upon receiving the command, the remaining few quickly dispersed.
Far away from the Stone House, on a large tree, Freya was pulling out several Black Daggers from behind her and forcefully plunging them into the Trunk.
At this moment, the trunk was already covered with numerous daggers, scattered haphazardly without any pattern.
After inserting the last dagger on top, she jumped down from the tree.
Satisfied with her masterpiece, she reached out and gently touched the large tree.
A wave of green light flashed from her palm, and the previously still tree began to slowly writhe, gradually pulling the many daggers into its heart.
Before long, the entire tree returned to its original state.
Withdrawing her hand, Freya glanced at a female mannequin not far from the tree.
"A substitute puppet that can mimic anyone's aura, including their appearance and condition. Truly impressive for a member of a prominent family; even in decline, they can still produce such fine items."
With a slight sigh in her heart, she prepared some more items and headed toward a patch of grass where she had set up a temporary hidden Rune Array. (To be continued.)
